Sometimes describing things to my grandparents is like. You ask. Hypothetically. What would happen if you put activated yeast in an airtight container. And my grandmother asks. What recipe is that for? And we’re like no this is a thought experiment. Maybe a real experiment. Perhaps we could seal tight the pressure cooker and just not plug it in to see what would happen. And then my grandfather asks what kind of bread we’re making. And we’re like no we’re thinking through a hypothetical experiment with an unplugged pressure cooker. And then my grandmother asks why you’d make bread in a pressure cooker. And we say no for the millionth time we’re just wondering what happens to yeast if you put it in an airtight container. Do you think they’d just run out of oxygen and die? We could probably look this up somewhere. And then they ask where we found this recipe and why it’s in a pressure cooker and we say no it’s not a recipe in fact what we’re considering could create botulism or something and then they ask what has botulism and we’re like there is no botulism we’re considering the possibility of it if we were to do this hypothetical experiment. And then they ask. What experiment? I thought this was a recipe. And then we say no it’s not a recipe we’re talking about performing bad science in our garage with yeast and a pressure cooker and then they ask why would you put yeast in a pressure cooker

I rly hate the Satanic Panic & the moral panic surrounding violence in video games in the 90s, coz it's now impossible to talk about the social implications of violent video games in a realistic sense.

No, violence in video games does not create serial killers in the way most people imagine it would.

However, it's very important to notice how after 9/11, a lot of violent video games pivoted their content from silly gratuitous cartoon gore to more realistic military shooters set in the Levant from a US American lens. It's also important to notice the connection of these games & their toxic online multi-player voice chats to Gamer Gate in 2014.

It's obviously not as black & white as it was presented in the 80s & 90s, I dont think everyone who played early Call of Duty games is a white supremacist who wants to join the military to kill people in the middle east, but I think it's dangerous to pretend like video games or any media can't have an impact on the way people think about violence.

I think what makes all the difference here is how that violence is portrayed, what the message behind it is, what the motives are behind the people who crafted that message, who the victims of that violence are, how they are portrayed & the greater cultural context that surrounds it.

#yeah prev same. #like honestly i like playing cod games. they have a nice gameplay loop and its funm #*fun #but the politics of them are...... so bad. the US military is always good and terrorists are always madmen or religious zealots #there is Not nuance generally. #and it's used as a recruiting tactic. like. it just is. #it's a nuanced issue. no these games wont make you a serial killer. no they won't inherently make you join the military. #but they do desensitize you to violence and they do glorify the US military. that's just a fact. #a lot of it just has to do with how critical you are of the stuff you play. like. i have a very different feeling about these games now #than i did when i was in high school. #it's a complicated issue for sure. like you're not gonna 100% become a cartoon murderer but it can reinforce previous biases #just like any other media can. #imo Call of Duty and NCIS do the same thing. military good. cops good. bad guys always bad for no reason. #it's not the uniqueness of video games that makes the messaging compelling. its baked into a lot of different media.
