not to sound old fashioned or whatever but getting rid of payphones is a mistake, and the only reason we should do it is if we're replacing them with free, public use phones. Having the ability to reach out to others in every place of public congress and transit is an important safety feature and the advent and adoption of smartphones does not negate their utility.
I know i've already lost this battle, so it's somewhat pointless to say, but smartphones die. chargers aren't always there. smartphones break. some people don't have them. Being able to call someone and ask for help, to get in touch with friends and family, without relying on something you yourself own, is a societal good.
Furthermore, expecting everybody to have a single piece of fragile technology on them at all times to the point that critical services are not available without them is truly mind-boggling to me. This goes for things like restaurant menus and transit maps as well. you should be able to navigate the world without a brick made by Apple or Samsung, and if you can't, then something is fundamentally broken. It's one thing for new technology to augment an existing real-world experience, it's another thing to usurp it entirely.

Yeah, I needed a Smiling Friends sideblog. Hi, I'm @anxietycheesecake (both here and on Ao3) and I have a couple of fanfics I intend to continue as soon as I can.
Switching Friends is an established charpim fic where Charlie is having a normal one because he's not ready to admit he's a bottom.
Shipping Friends is a Charpim + Alan fic where Pim is having a normal one because Charlie and Alan have started dating and he doesn't know how to feel about it (the answer is gay and poly).
Since I kind of forgot these fics existed for two years, all ideas on how to continue them are welcome (especially the second one).
Hope you'll follow me :)

The boycotts are working, however don’t rush to get your bigmacs yet. They could be doing this to save face. Keep boycotting. Don’t stop until you hit them where they know it won’t benefit to manipulate.

More profound when you consider that Doctors Without Borders rarely makes political statements.
In #UNSC mtg on Middle East, @MSF SG Christopher Lockyear says: "Israeli forces have attacked our convoys, detained our staff, bulldozed our vehicles, hospitals have been bombed and raided. And now for a second time, one of our staff shelters has been hit. This pattern of attacks is either intentional or indicative of reckless incompetence. Our colleagues in #Gaza are fearful that as I speak to you today, they will be punished tomorrow."
He adds: "The humanitarian response in Gaza today is an illusion. A convenient illusion that perpetuates a narrative that this war is being waged in line with international laws. Calls for humanitarian assistance have echoed across this chamber. Yet in Gaza we have less and less every day, less space, less medicine, less food, less water, less safety."

I wish I knew about men like these growing up, I wish I knew that trans men could be successful after a lifetime of never seeing anyone ‘like me’ excelling in life.
