*A lot of speculation about how the internal hierarchy in the Sakuma clan works and what happens to Rei and Ritsu's parents.
I have been digesting the theory in my head for quite a long time that something like a communal system is practiced in the Sakuma clan. I mean, there is a feeling that the children in the clan are brought up by everyone at once and by no one specific at the same time, as if the concept of "parents" in their family is akin to the concept of "clan".
And if you are lucky enough to have a close relative of your age, he will be your "family". And parents for children are all the adults of the clan who are free and who can and want to take part in the upbringing of a child.
I've been thinking about this for a long time, because both Rei and Ritsu, when mentioning a close family, mean only each other, and "parents" are referred to by them as some kind of distant and detached concept, although we know that Rei constantly interacts with clan members and has been dealing with his relatives since childhood. But he never mentioned how close his relatives were.
THEREFORE.
From these preliminary considerations, I have deduced a theory that, in my opinion, has the right to exist. Probably, Rei and Ritsu simply don't have parents. Perhaps they died under some unfortunate circumstances or something similar, given the health problems within the clan, I think that the mortality of some members is quite likely, especially considering how damn much energy a woman takes away from bearing and giving birth to a child (especially two children in such a relatively short period of time).
The thoughts about this came to my mind because Sakuma siblings considered, according to Rei, "the most noble and pureblood members of the clan," and often children receive nobility by birthright. Therefore, their parents probably could well have been noble members of the clan as well. And after Rei and Ritsu's parents died, random relatives took over the upbringing of the children (and as we know, raising two children is difficult, especially if you're not their parents, and especially if you're simply incapacitated most of the day).
Relatives probably tried to give them proper upbringing, but their state of health and complete isolation from the world, coupled with the lack of real "parental" affection for the Sakuma brothers, Rei and Ritsu were forced to be raised themselves on their own, hence also some of their problems with social norms.
I think Rei they're really the only people close to each other, because they don't have anyone else.
Consequently, Rei and Ritsu were the only truly close people to each other, and hence their strong, sometimes painful attachment to each other, which often occurs in children who have lost their parents and remain single.
sigh.
A little messy, as always, but still.
And the more I think about it, the more interesting it becomes.

I got one very intrusive thought that I despise and hope is not true...
but do you think someone might have tried sexually assaulting Rei since you know his beauty is brought up a lot I mean his gorgeous and he was said to be sourounded by adults a lot and you know how creepy that can be with some adults...ugh...
...oh
OOOHHH💀
I had never thought about it before this question. But this assumption is logical (and creepy).
Knowing this whole culture of idols, we know that idols (and beautiful people in general) very often face harassment both in childhood and adulthood. Rei has always been a smart and anxious pretty boy, afraid of the world, so I think he knew the risks of running into bad people and took some precautions. He was definitely aware of his defenseless position, so I think he didn't stay alone with strangers. I think that makes sense?
But the extent to which these fears are justified makes me shudder. ugh.

It just occurred to me how much you and I don't realize how damn dreary and lonely Sakuma Rei's childhood was.
I mean, we know that, but just THINK ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND.
You're lonely. You're just damn lonely. You don't go to school because your family doesn't keep in touch with the outside world and can't stand sunlight. And besides, you also can't stay in the sun long enough to make any close acquaintances. You don't have friends your age.
But you are not alone only in a society for which you are too "vampire". You are also lonely in your family, because you are not a "vampire" enough and can feel relatively good during the day. Therefore, during the daytime you are sitting in a house in which there is absolutely no one to talk to, because even your brother, the only person of your age, is now in a semi-conscious state and you are NOT ABLE TO HELP HIM IN ANY WAY. But your family is proud of this feature and it seems to you that you are the only one who cares about it.
However, at night, when your whole family and you are awake, you are still lonely, because you are just a child in a crowd of adults who does not understand the charms of all this "vampire aesthetics" and absolutely does not tolerate the taste of blood that his family drinks on holidays. But apart from your family, you have no one to talk to, because all the other people SLEEP AT NIGHT. Therefore, you are sitting at home again and you feel that your loneliness does not stop for a second.
This all sounds terrible already, but there is something else. YOU ARE SIMPLY AN UNIMAGINABLY COMPREHENSIVELY GIFTED PERSON. You are so smart that even the adults in your family do not treat you as a child or as an equal. For them, you are something like a guiding light. You are afraid of this responsibility because you are a small child in this nightmarishly huge world, so you try to meet the expectations placed on you by working, working and working on yourself, over and over again absorbing a lot of knowledge that scares you more and more and instill in your childish heart anxiety, and it even more instill in you you have faith in your own insignificance and incompetence.
Your life is an anxiety and fear that you are NOT ENOUGH.
And when you finally get out into the real world, you, still a child, are even more convinced of that. Even for other adults, you turn into a god, omniscient and omnipotent, solving all problems. There is a growing feeling in your heart that you are responsible for the happiness of everyone in this world just because you are talented, because you are "special". And the fear of the world, the fear of responsibility, is growing and growing. And you, despite the many people who crowd around you and expect you to be "special," you're still a DAMN LONELY KID who doesn't even have friends.
And you are alone, you have no one to tell about your experiences, because if everyone around you says that you are special and should help everyone around, then that means that it really is. You believe that because you're still just a kid.
And this responsibility for the future of the family, for the well-being of your brother, for the happiness of other people, for your future, for the future of others, for the future of everyone you meet, falls on your shoulders with a heavy, huge burden and you, a scared, anxious child, implicitly carry it on yourself, because EVERYONE IS SURE THAT THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE.
And you don't fit into the society of ordinary or unusual people, because you are "special" to everyone. For some you are a monster, for others you are a deity, for others you are an object for blind imitation and for no one you are not "Sakuma Rei". You're growing up, more and more people are crowding around you, they're from different schools, from different places, from different countries, but you're still lonely.
It's such a disgusting, dreary nightmare, just think about it.

Fanfact: actually, Rei is not so bad with the phone. all his relationships with smartphones are mostly exaggerated by him, although in fact Rei is more distracted than inept. He just prefers live communication more and doesn't really use social networks. Rei doesn't see much point in using the phone, so he often forgets to charge it, for example, or take it with him. but he uses it quite confidently. (this bro is pretending to be an old man again, DON'T BELIEVE HIM).

(this dude got lost in time and space again)
During this time, I have studied the vampires as a cultural phenomenon among various mythologies a little bit, so that I might get to know someone better (guess who it is the first time).
Therefore, here's interesting and intriguing facts about vampires, just for general development (or suddenly you want to write a "real vampire rei sakuma" au).
Well well~
1. Despite the reference of vampiric creatures in ancient civilizations, the folklore of the creature known today as the vampire originates almost exclusively from southeastern Europe of the early 18th century. At the same time, mass persecution of people on charges of vampirism began (this is probably what Rei says in one of the stories of the event when he talks about the persecution of his family. There are more and more hints that the Sakuma clan comes from from Europe).
2. In most cases, vampires (according to the beliefs, obviously) are the ghosts of evil creatures, suicide victims or witches, as well as people who died unnaturally, but they can also be created by an evil spirit inhabiting a corpse, or a vampire bite. In Slavic and Chinese traditions, any corpse that an animal jumped over, especially a dog or cat, could have become one of the undead (not really on the subject, but remember Koga and his dog Leon. it's just fun to think about it).
3. The vampires were lying in a coffin with their left eye open, wrapped in a shroud (Rei: —_O)
4. Judging by many mythologies, vampires suffer from arithmomania, that is, an acute need to count their actions or objects in the environment. For example, Chinese narratives say that if a vampiric creature came across a bag of rice, he would have to count every grain. This weakness was the human way to keep vampires in their coffins until morning.
5. According to folklore beliefs, corpses considered to be vampires usually looked healthier than expected, plump and with virtually no signs of decomposition. This is strikingly different from the pop-cultural image of a vampire depicted as a pale, thin, bony creature.
6. Folklore vampires could make their presence known by engaging in minor poltergeist-style activities such as throwing rocks at roofs or moving household items and pressuring people in their sleep (OMFG SECOND YEAR REI SAKUMA PFFT—)
7. One method of finding a vampire's grave involved leading a virgin boy through a graveyard or church grounds on a virgin stallion. The horse would supposedly balk at the grave in question (in the enstars canon, by the way, drinking the blood of a virgin boy was part of the Easter ritual of the Sakuma clan)
8. The objects that protected against vampires were garlic (which is more typical of European legends), sunlight (not always), wild rose stalk, hawthorn and various sacred things for believers. Some traditions also state that a vampire cannot enter a house without an invitation from the owner; after the first invitation, they can come and go whenever they want. (This, by the way, was repeatedly mentioned by Rei).
9. It is also believed that vampires avoid mirrors, since due to the absence of a soul, vampires don't have a reflection.
10. It is also believed in some cultures that vampires can send nightmares to people.

Accidentally bumped into one of your Rei analysis. Now I'm in love.
Haha, just kidding, I mean, thank for all the good lore and analysis!!! I really want to read and understand Rei too but there too much characters and I can't keep it up.
But gladly, I have you.
Your Rei analysis are yummy, thank for the meal. Also, what your favorite Rei card?
uwah, thank you!! <3
I am very glad that you liked it☆ (motivation UP)
Idk why, but unbloomed "Leader of Demons" holds a special place in my heart. I mean, I just like the way she looks, she's simple and lets us see Rei without his cool vamp image. pretty.
ah, and rei's feature scout 2 also causes a very warm feeling (oh well I just very like Rei in a casual setting heheh)

How would you summarize reis character in one simple paragraph
sorry, I'm a little late with the answer :')
(my verbose cursed brain has literally EXPLODED with this ask right now ohh)
"A man with the stage role of a vampire. Despite the wide list of talents and the mysterious atmosphere around his personality, he is a very kind, sincere and compassionate person, next to whom you will never feel misunderstood".
That's the only thing that came to my mind, actually

TW: suicidal thoughts.
Rei wasn't going to commit suicide in his second year.
Not that I completely deny this possibility, but let me express my thoughts on this matter. This man was tired of living, it seemed to him that somehow accidentally dying would be a glorious way out of problems, but he would never kill himself on his own in his life.
He, a man who feels responsible for almost everything bad that happens around him, would not have become the cause of this "bad" on his own. He has a big, HUGE responsibility on his shoulders, a lot of unfinished business, he has a beloved brother (please do not forget about the existence of Ritsu just because he isn't visible in those stories), he would never condemn his own brother and people dear to him to a feeling of unhappiness with his own hands. I will say more: Rei, in fact, thought less about himself than about others and this was a problem. He wanted to be selfish, but it was not only society that prevented him, but also himself.
He, in fact, didn't want to die, he wanted to live for real, not like this, as he lives now. He had not lost hope, he was just tired and wanted to rest a little. Rei is literally the personification of the phrase "I sleep it off only in a coffin."
Rei didn't want to die. He wanted a different life.
And all his suicidal words, thoughts and actions were just a cry for help, a cry of "look! Here I am, I'm not a monster, I can feel pain too!! I'm tired too!! Please help me, someone, please look at me as a human being! I'm in pain, I'm scared and I'm tired! I want you to notice this, because I can't ask for help in words, because I'm painfully ashamed to complain."
(Just remember how he said that he would also like to get the same concern about his well-being that Eichi gets, for example. Or how he gets touched when the producer or other guys take care of him. this is new to him and he wanted it. he wished someone would take care of him, at least a little).
He felt dead, and risking his own safety, he tried to feel his mortality, in addition to everything.
And then he met people who treated him like a living person and he's felt his own life.
Rei is a man who strives so much for human life. He just couldn't give up on what he had been dreaming about for so long.

Have you ever thought about how hard it is to perceive Rei not as an adult? I mean, ES Rei is only 20 years old, this is the student age, he is not only young, he is literally a child (the average life expectancy of a man in Japan is 81.5 years, Rei has lived a little less than a quarter of his life). And he's only a year or two older than most of the other characters (he's younger than Rinne, okay?).
What my point is.
This man was never perceived by anyone at his age and this was the main reason for all his problems with society. Since childhood, people have forgotten that Sakuma Rei is the same child as all people his age, just because he was calmer and more thoughtful (and more erudite!) than the rest. There were no sharp corners in his personality, typical of young people of his age, there was no maximalism and impetuosity, but this did not stop him from being young. (Emotional burnout is not early aging, my friend, you have not experienced life, you have an overabundance of cortisol, do not confuse it). And even we, with some part of our consciousness, perceived him to be older than the others (as one of the teachers??? that very wise cleaner lol). But these features of his personality did not make him truly mature for a single second of his life. Mentally, he's still the same young man who wants to do something interesting, hang out with someone his own age, have fun and learn and try something new. He just seems older, but is not an adult. And that's why all the weird things he performs seem logical when you remember that this man is only twenty years old.
