why did the gaang think the ember island katara was accurate. ember island katara preaching about hope and forgiveness bsfr she literally attempted murder last episode and every episode before that. she is literally rage personified the only reason she preaches hope is because she hopes to kill more people in a badass way

The real reason Katara didn't do anything in LoK. She was not taking this disrespect.
She doesn't get a statue? When even the cabbage merchant did? Get out of her house.

I am like, nothing short of absolutely disgusted at Bryke's portrayal of Katara in the comics and TLOK???
And apparently a majority of the audience is okay with this portrayal??
Just a recap:
This is Katara
Tumblr media
A girl with severe abandonment issues because her mom was murdered by a Fire Nation soldier and soon after her dad left to fight in the war, leaving her alone to take care of her brother and the village.
This is Aang
Tumblr media
A boy with chronic running away issues. This fault of his has led to a war extending up to 100 years causing death and destruction all around the world.
Katara does not acknowledge this fault of his because she idolises him as the Avatar but still his actions hurt her. A lot.
Tumblr media
Katara: It's not brave, it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping him and I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?
Logically speaking, a person with abandonment issues should never be with a person who has a tendency to run away from their issues. But Aang and Katara get together anyway.
But then the comics happen.
Literally anyone who cared about Katara as a character of her own (and not just as Aang's love interest) was infuriated at how she was portrayed. She was stripped of all her autonomy and characterization and was made into "The Avatar's Girlfriend". Nothing of her own.
Some people actually call this relationship sweet. Yuck.
But the thing is, it has panels like this:
Tumblr media
Katara, the girl with abandonment issues looks— that's right, abandoned and forgotten.
Even if the "abandonment issues" angle is thrown out of the window, the above panel from Katara's pov is a very unhealthy and shitty experience. (I can vouch with personal experience)
When you clearly don't have anyone else and the one person who you completely dedicate yourself to is completely avoiding you in favour of other people who don't really matter that much just because it makes them feel better/superior, how lonely and abandoned does that make you feel?
Also this sort of behaviour is undeniably selfish and self centred.
This problem of "Aang paying more attention to fangirls" exists in the show as well but atleast Aang corrects his behaviour or accepts that it was incorrect. The comics however:
Tumblr media
Katara, who was abandoned, ignored and lonely in this entire comic is reasonably upset about this. But instead of the comic validating her feelings, it makes her feel guilty???
What the fuck??
If this isn't a fulfilment of the male fetish of gfs/wives putting their own mental issues and feelings on a back bench just for the sake of the man's hApPineSs, then what is this?
Not to mention this fetish is pretty disgusting.
This is what young kids are supposed to learn form the comics?
This is harmful for boys AND girls.
But sure couple goals and soulmates or whatever.
Moving on,
The very existence of LOK!Katara is just—
Like what—?
This definitely isn't the Katara I know and love.
Katara, who was completely devastated by her mother's death but got her shit together immediately and seamlessly slipped into the role of her mother and was so damn good at it that her elder brother could conveniently use his coping mechanism to supress their mother's memories with Katara's instead.
You're telling me this same girl grew up to be a sad old lonely widow who spent her days and nights wallowing in the grief of the death of her husband—
Bullshit.
That's straight up romanticization of "life is nothing without you" trope where the wife just becomes a non-functional person after the death of her husband. That, and Bryke not giving a shit about Katara's character.
There's the evident drama of Aang ignoring his two other kids in favour of the Airbending one; leaving Katara with the other two kids. Just like how she was left alone in charge of things as a child.
And then there's this:
Tumblr media
They actually take the time to show us that Katara is sad and lonely and abandoned??
What family does she have left at the South pole? None.
And yet, people manage to think Katara is perfectly fine and happy.
Katara, a person with severe abandonment issues spends her entire life being abandoned??
What the fuck Bryke?
Like, it's pretty clear that they didn't give two shits about Katara as a character; she was just supposed to be a pretty arm candy for the Hero™ with some handy dandy waterbending abilities.
But if other people have done a spectacular job of turning this cardboard character into a fully fleshed out, multi dimensional character, why would you throw it away??
Like, that's just dumb.
Why would they take an infinite number of steps back to turn Katara back into a cardboard character and fulfil romanticized misogynistic tropes?
Much wow, many thanks.

Katara would’ve been such a good diplomat (it’s canon)
everyone rightfully hates on the ATLA comics because the politics are baffling and the characterization is even more so…but if there’s one thing we can take away from the dumpster fire that is The Promise, it’s that Katara was BORN to be a diplomat and an international force for peace, okay? Especially since her besties, the Avatar and the Fire Lord, aren’t actually very good at this.
If you haven’t read The Promise, the Wikipedia summary is pretty good. The TL;DR is that Zuko and Kuei agree that the Fire Nation colonies need to be returned to the Earth Kingdom. The colony of Yu Dao is not happy about this because the people of the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom have been mixing together (under inequitable conditions) for more than a hundred years and “just kick out the Fire Nation” is not as straightforward as it seems, since there are blended families now. Zuko refuses to kick out the Fire Nation people from Yu Dao, Kuei wants to play hardball, and they almost launch another war. Oh and there’s a weird plot about Aang debating whether to put Zuko down like a rabid dog
For all that the Wiki page does a good job of summarizing the events, it forgets some key facts:
It’s Katara who first starts thinking about new solutions after witnessing the situation on the ground, and then comes up with the idea that Zuko and Kuei should meet and talk about the colonies:
Tumblr media
It’s Katara who tells Kuei that Zuko has legitimate concerns (without saying that Zuko is right), when Aang tries to hedge and sugarcoat the truth:
Tumblr media
And it’s Katara who says to Kuei, wait, what the hell do you mean that you have no idea what your people want, that Yu Dao is just a dot on the map for you? We’re getting you out of this stupid blimp and you’re gonna talk to people before you make a decision that affects their lives, you coward
Tumblr media
To recap, Katara demonstrates some pretty freaking key political skills, like:
finding out what people want before making a decision for them
seeing people as people first and foremost, not as fire nation or earth kingdom
encouraging her loved ones, the Avatar and the Fire Lord, to resolve a conflict by beginning negotiations instead of brawling like a couple of drunks at a bar / kids on the playground (both analogies fit btw, 13-17 is a weird combination of ages)
realistically reporting tricky disagreements without sweeping them under the rug
kidnapping a king to the middle of a battlefield to give him a reality check about listening to the people he’s trying to rule
Anyway, Katara is hyper competent at both war AND peace! We see this in the show, with her compassion for the prisoners of the Earth Kingdom (by inciting a prison riot) and the suffering people of the Fire Nation (by committing ecoterrorism), only now that compassion is backed up not only by her fighting prowess and speeches about hope, but actual ability to manipulate the levers of power.
And have I mentioned that she has the ears of both the Avatar and the Fire Lord and her dad is Chief of the Southern Water Tribe? Even if Katara didn’t get a diplomat position based on her skills, or her status as a war hero, she could nepo baby her way in. The fact that she does not pick up a career in international diplomacy is a crime & a colossal oversight from the creators. At minimum you know Katara would’ve established Healers Without Borders or something. She deserves to be yelling at people at ATLA UN and then drafting world-changing resolutions.
And as a bonus, Katara demonstrates her gift for diplomacy by not smacking Zuko up the head for attempting to legitimize colonization through the argument of economic progress…
Tumblr media
…and by not smacking Aang up the head for seriously considering anti-miscegenation as a viable political solution:
Tumblr media
This patience is a new development because show!Katara did not have this in her, but maybe this is what growing up is all about and not just yet another strike on the “comics are wildly OOC” tally
TL;DR: ATLA boys lost their brain cells post-canon. All hail Katara, Sugar Queen of international diplomacy.

Agreed.
I think Heaven sucks anyway.
I hope the end is Charlie rebranding The Hazbin Hotel into a home for lost souls.
That would be amazing
Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but...i don't really want them to go to heaven. Like they built such a strong bond with eachother, i think they would be better together in hell than separated in heaven

another thing about the crystal catacombs is that it seems clear to me that katara and zuko MUST talk a little more in between what we actually see, because when zuko says, “i’m sorry, that’s something we have in common”, they are both sitting-slash-kneeling, and in the next scene (after a switch to other plotty events) they’re both standing, and katara is apologizing for yelling at him. i don’t think it was a particularly LONG addition to the conversation (i imagine katara asking what he means, zuko wanting to connect but not really knowing how to talk about it further due to The Abuse Trauma, katara apologizing for yelling because she thinks that’s why he’s not opening up, etc.) but what i AM trying to figure out (for fic-writing purposes) is what caused them both to stand back up?

anyway, i'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam at this point but I'll say it again -- the show gives us two scenes of zuko expressing very legitimate worries about facing a father-figure after messing up
The Book 3 opener, with Mai on the boat, where Zuko worries about seeing his father after 3 years and how he's changed/his home has changed
Zuko anxious about facing Iroh again and discusses this with Katara
The conversations go like this:
Mai: Aren't you cold? Zuko: I've got a lot on my mind. It's been so long, over three years since I was home. I wonder what's changed. I wonder how I've changed. Mai: [Yawns.] I just asked if you were cold, I didn't ask for your whole life story. [Zuko frowns at her sarcastic response. Mai giggles and holds his face in her hands.] Stop worrying.
(in interest of fairness, I will include that the transcript i got from atla wiki says this: The two kiss. Mai exits, and Zuko stays there with an expression of relief on his face. We return to the ship where Team Avatar is on -- however, the show just actually shows a close up of his eyes)
and
Cut back to Zuko, who becomes worried and ashamed before walking toward the tent. Cut to Zuko from behind as he approaches the tent before stopping. Close-up of Zuko. Side-view as he sits down. Katara walks up to him. Katara Are you okay? Zuko [Frontal view.] No, I'm not okay. My uncle hates me, I know it. [Katara sits down next to him.] He loved and supported me in every way he could, and I still turned against him. How can I even face him? Katara [Close-up side-view of Zuko.] Zuko, you're sorry for what you did, right? Zuko: More sorry than I've been about anything in my entire life. Katara: Then he'll forgive you. He will.
I just think there's a very clear contrast here of dismissive vs supportive. I get what the writers were trying to do- Mai even smiles a little when she makes her joke-- but it just doesn't land for me because I think Zuko's concerns are valid and ought to be treated seriously here-- who wouldn't be worried after 3 years away???? And And Zuko doesn't even disclose his real worries to Mai (he does to Azula though!-- about seeing his dad without having actually recaptured the Avatar! which I think is interesting)
And he's very upfront with Katara in the later scene, which is a very pivotal one for him-- his courage to make amends and apologize to one of the most important people in his life. And Katara doesn't try to lighten the mood or tell him to stop worrying -- she treats his concerns as valid and walks him through it-- he's sorry, so Iroh will forgive him (it probably helps that she has also forgiven him for what he did in Ba Sing Se, she knows what that means)

Some Katangers be the most insecure canon lovers ever.
Like Yea they were made canuuun mad long ago why are u mad in a different universe if they aren't?
Didn't u get your happy ending? Didn't u get you sequel show with literally ur canons ship kid being one of the leads?!?! Didn't u get a comic series with them being a canon couple? Like hello? Why do you care we still ship Zutara? Is it cuz deep down u know it not only looks better but thematically it's better to? Like I can't understand why they care so much about Zutarians. I was honestly shocked to find this out recently I thought the ship wars died with the end of the show and we can just ship whatever cuz it's over but they out here being sore winners it's so bizarre to me🤣🤣
Even the possibility of Zutara happening in this live action is driving them mad and the show hasn't even come out lol. They acting like Aang in ember Island players. Wild insecure.
Personally I don't hate kattang it's just there meaning nothing to me I do not like Maiko but that's cuz I always didn't like Mai 🤷‍♀️
Anywayz Zutara forever I'm still not jumping for joy to see this show because I've just been burnt by so many live actions but I'd love to see Zutara if only for the renewed zest in fan creations of them. Keep making Zutara fan content I'm loving thisssss.

The ATLA fandom is interesting. There's been uproar about Katara's personality changing in the live-action... Besties, don't you think there's a reason why they did that? Maybe due to a certain influx of people bashing Katara every time she breathed in 2020? She was shamed repeatedly for being angry, outspoken, and confrontational. Not to mention how many of you defended her being a docile healer instead of a fighter in LOK (hell, some of you preferred Katara in LOK over Katara in ATLA, don't think I forgot). Why are we backtracking now?
(Yes the live-action could have done better with her. But they were probably trying to appease the people who whined in 2020, which they shouldn't have since this fandom would find something to rage about no matter what)
Istg, Renaissance fans and their performative activism. Again I say, the ATLA Renaissance sucked

Just wanted to say that when Aang was struck by lightning he was letting go of his attachment to Katara and when Zuko was struck by lightning he was literally saving Katara’s life.
I suppose the argument could be made that by unblocking that last chakra and gaining control over the avatar state, Aang was trying to save Katara from everyone that was attacking them but Aang was in that room too. He was saving himself just as much as he was saving Katara, he didn’t know Azula was going to hit him with lightning. Also, the world needs its avatar.
Zuko, on the other hand, knowingly risked his life solely for Katara. He made the decision to be struck by lightning to save her. He knew that Katara had used up all her spirit water to heal Aang after he was hit by lightning and he still jumped in front of Katara. He knew that he could have died.
Like wtf happened? How does a show fuck up the romance this badly? Everything else played out so beautifully.

Honestly, same
I can’t help but be consumed with rage every single time I think about how they handled Katara’s character post ATLA finale…. The comics, TLOK, the live action… like that’s not my girl !! Bring her back!

It is so crazy that Kataang fans go on about how Zuko had the greatest redemption arc ever until someone brings up that they wanted him to get with Katara. Then they just ignore his redemption and character growth in order to say it would be toxic because of what Zuko was like in Season 1 when they were on different sides of the main conflict. I even saw someone really try to say that Zuko and Katara’s interactions after Katara forgave him were still toxic without providing proof aside from basically saying trust me bro. Another person tried to say their relationship would be bad because of how bad his relationship with Mai was bad, but Maiko was still better because they supposedly cared about each other. So Zuko has the greatest redemption arc ever even if he got with Katara or you just don’t find his redemption arc that genuine, you can’t say his redemption arc is great unless he gets with Katara because it isn’t all that genuine of an argument.

I think the funniest thing to accuse Zutara fans is that we are all projecting into Katara bc we want to date "bad boy" Zuko.
Setting aside for a minute the gross implication that all zutara shippers are into men,
calling zuko "bad boy"??? That's hilarious. He's an awkward boy! He practices his making friends speeches on frogs and impersonates his uncle and has a diary with drawings ( in live action version). He's the most awkward boy who ever lived.

For your post finals art request, how about something from your Zutara scars au? Maybe Zuko gently kissing the scars on Katara's hands, with Katara looking absolutely flustered.
Thanks for your consideration and time.
I love soft scar kisses so much, I hope you don’t mind that I added a touch of angst to this
I saw something recently that was like what if Zuko thinks he’s the one that burned Katara’s hands, and I really like the idea so I wanted to incorporate it into this au. So here’s a little comic about Zuko apologizing for burning Katara’s hands (which he did not) insipired by your request :>>

is anyone going to tell the kat@angers that it's not feminist activism to argue Katara's arc in LOK is fine on the grounds that "some women want to be homemakers and that's okay!!"
Like you're not helping real women that way. In fact, most antis for the cannon ship ARE women. Many are homemakers themselves.
Katara is not a real woman. She is a fictional woman written by men.
Can the sensibilities and wishes of a girl change by the time she is a adult? Yes!
But as this is a textual character who, as per the text, rejects the societal structure of her fictional world (which mirrors our own) that women are and can only ever be docile homemakers (i.e. I don't want to heal, I want to fight; I will never turn my back on people who need me; let's start a prison riot; let's engage in vigilante ecoterrorism; let's pitch an absolute fit because the boys are not pulling their fair weight in the homemaking; let's confront my mother's killer at the absolute rejection and condemnation of the male figures whom I am to respect; etc) it is perfectly reasonable to argue that this end was not a natural course for her character.
Fictional characters are not real people. This means that they do not change their mind off screen. That is not an acceptable argument. That is called a "plot hole", which is a nonsensical change made at the convenience and contrivance of the writer(s), who in this case are men exhibited to not care for women or girls all that much. It is within THEIR character to write this way.
Regardless of who, if anyone, Katara ended up with, Katara tolerating disrespect, neglect, abuse of her children, giving up all of her former aspirations to live in the shadow of men, and dying as a mere footnote in history (and being alright with it!!) is not surprising given the absolute vitriol Bryke has shown toward female fans of their "creation". It was supposed to be a "boy" show. It was always supposed to be a "boy" show. The creators of Supernatural and Game of Thrones did the same thing. ATLA just did it first.
Arguing "not all women" is not activism in the face of what is really happening in this discourse. Sending death threats to real, actual women with feelings in defense of a fake pretend woman's fake pretend autonomy is performative activism, and worse, hypocritical.
Not all women agree with you. Not all women feel represented and find the outcome of Katara's story satisfactory. If y'all care about feminism and respecting women's choices so much, lay off the real life women you're so fond of harassing. Our views and opinions, while opposing your own, don't affect you.

you don’t have to be a Zutara shipper to dislike Ka/taang
Most of my irl friends are not shippers and the word “Zutara” does not exist in their vocabulary, but they think Ka/taang is weird. Because a prepubescent boy with a teenage girl is weird. He’s a child. She’s a teenager. Anyone who stops and thinks about what they were like at twelve vs fourteen knows those were some long years.
I started getting the ick for Ka/taang in The Headband and it reached its apex in Nightmares and Daydreams. I didn’t even start liking Zutara until The Southern Raiders. I liked Katara with Haru but the creators sank that ship with a strategically placed moustache
I am a ZK shipper so things like parallels and symbolism and Katara’s development as an adult matter to me. But even without all that, I didn’t like Ka/taang. Because before my analytical brain jumped in, my lizard brain said “ick.”

oh you'd think that video was made by some 10 year olds for 2008 youtube but no, it was made by the creators of the show. using, without permission, fanart that was sent to you just to mock said artists and other shippers (by then, teenagers and children i assume) is so nasty.
now i know why kataang shippers are very nasty on here and twitter too, under every zutara post... these two encourage them with this kind of behavior.
