7 Bible Reading Suggestions for 2022
The goal of this article is to offer suggestions for improving your Bible reading in 2022. What a treasure trove of spiritual riches God has placed at our disposal! May the Word be sweeter than honey and more valuable than gold now more than ever. Here are seven suggestions to help you read the Bible more effectively this year. TIP #1: Read the Bible Like Any Other BookMy first suggestion is to embrace what I call "A Better Way to Read the Bible." Simply put, a better way to read the Bible is to read it like any other book, which means we read it from beginning to end. Consider the last time you read a book that you thoroughly enjoyed and gained a lot from. Did you read it all or only a portion of it? Did you only read a few sections, or did you start at the beginning and work your way through? I'm stating the obvious, but isn't it best to read a book in its entirety to truly understand it? TIP #2: Read the Bible Like No Other BookPray is my second suggestion... before, during, and after reading the Bible "Open my eyes, that I may see wonderful things in your law," is one of my favorite Bible reading prayers (Psalm 119:18). The word "law" can mean "instruction" or "teaching," and the Bible, more than any other book, contains God's instruction and teaching. While the Bible should be read like any other book, it should also be read like no other book because there is no other book like it. It is God's only book, and we need His supernatural assistance to understand it. TIP #3: Get the Big PictureWhen reading the Bible, remember what Jen Wilkin says so succinctly, "The Bible is a book about God." I interpret this to mean that the Bible is primarily or primarily about God. It's an autobiography. This was a novel concept for me until a few years ago, and it was a difficult pill to swallow, so I understand how it may surprise some. However, the Bible, like life, is not primarily about us. Sure, we're there, and the Bible says a lot about you and me. But we're not the main attraction. God is. As a result, whenever you read the Bible, ask yourself, "What does this passage teach about God (Father, Son, and Spirit)?" Then ask yourself, "What is my response to this teaching about God?" TIP #4: Write Hustling World to the two questions posed in Tip #3. Keep a Bible Reading Journal. This does not have to be elaborate. Make a note of your ideas in a word processing document or a spiral notebook. When I interact with the material I'm reading, I always learn and retain more. Do more than just read and pray. Read, pray, and write whenever possible. Better yet, pray, read, pray, write, and pray. TIP #5: Make a Commitment to Read the Whole Bible (or at least the New Testament)Yes, I'm returning to Tip #1 - reading the entire book is the best way to understand it. There are numerous resources available to assist you with this. Bible Reading Plans are a good place to start, so look for one that appeals to you online. Then... Take a chance! It is possible through the grace of God and for the glory of God. Here's how I've approached the task of reading the entire Bible. I've been reading through the entire New Testament in a year for several years. This can be accomplished by reading one chapter per day, five days per week. Then, every two or three years, I read both the Old and New Testaments in a single year. This is how I've done it for the past 15 years, and it's served me well. If you're new to the Bible or if reading the entire Book right now seems too daunting, why not start with the New Testament? Eventually, you'll want to read both Testaments; reading and understanding the Old Testament will take your understanding of the New Testament to a whole new level. And when was the last time you only read the last quarter of a book? TIP #6: Get Help Understanding What You ReadRegardless of how you read it, make use of the many wonderful resources available to help you understand the Bible. God has bestowed numerous blessings on the Church. One of those gifts are knowledgeable Bible teachers who have spent years studying the Bible in order to help God's people understand it. The Bible is both a single book and a collection of books. Take the time to consider the big picture of each individual book as you read through the Bible. A good study Bible should include an introduction and an outline for each book, which you should read and use to navigate that book. Another significant aspect of the Bible is the variety of literary genres found in it. Again, use a study Bible to learn about these genres and how they differ. TIP #7: Look to Your Heart for the Answer to This Big QuestionFinally, don't forget about the "Why" question. You've come here because you want to read the Bible. That appears to be a positive development. But why? What is your motivation? That is an extremely important question. It is literally a matter of life and death. I consider this frequently because I am aware that my motivations for reading the Bible have not always been pure. So, how about you? How do you respond to the question, "Why do I want to read the Bible?" A true believer reads the Bible to know and glorify the God of the Word. There is a significant difference between reading to learn about God and reading to know God. May the latter, not the former, be your motivation. Here's to a grace-filled, God-blessed New Year in 2022, and may you get to know God better through His Word. Are you looking for more Bible reading suggestions?
