Ivar was not blind to the behaviour of the bishop. He knew well enough when a man is ignoring another and in some cases, Ivar hardly cared if it was true. When one’s behaviour isn’t much to the young one’s liking, he will simply call them out on it, pushing them back on the right track - but only once, perhaps. Ivar’s patience was just as fickle as the bones in his legs.
Heahmund’s request made him laugh, after all. It had almost worked, that little trick in order to kill just a few more heathens in the name of his stupid god. “Very well, Bishop Heahmund,” Ivar mused, the amusement still lingering in his eyes as well as on the corners of his mouth. It all faltered once he called out to one of his men in what the priest may call their pagan tongue, demanding for a sword and any Christian prisoner to be brought to them.
Tumblr media
heahmund, despite what ivar might have believed, did not rise to every challenge blindly and stupidly simply to win an argument. he was happy enough to do battle with another northman whom he could kill, but he was not here to play mind games. the moment he saw the prisoner brought forth, he turned his gaze to ivar, disappointment etched into it.
“i will not kill an innocent. you know better than such insipid and childish ruses.” he gave a sigh, and rose to his feet, sheathing his sword as he moved to walk away.

“nothing,” he answered. “i do not run. i fight. i face all adversity with no fear.” he eyed the way she toyed with her fair hair, acutely aware of how close she was to him. he too, shifted just a little closer, leaning in to speak in a lower tone. “i have thought of nothing more than returning home to england since i left her shores...”
his eyes held her gaze. “i will choose of my own free will to remain if you ask it.”
Tumblr media
A small smile moved across her face in a wave, disappearing as quickly as it had appeared. He was attractive, a little too attractive and it was distracting her from their conversation. She had edged herself in closer to him without realising and found herself nervously playing with her hair.
“It is just a little suspicious to me. An enemy so quick to change sides. What are you running from?”

“Trust me, your flock will be safe as much as I can manage it.” She reaches over and gently squeezes his hand in reassurance. The queen would not allow harm to come to those few she called friend, and if she could manage it, maybe she could save of the people that others would call for their death. Elizabeth had experienced enough death through her time, if she could save some from it, she would.
“Let us change the topic now, shall we? Do you enjoy riding, your grace? The sun is shining, let us take advantage of it.” She hoped the man would take the bait to change the topic. She enjoyed their discussions but tired of the dark topics.
Tumblr media
he chose to say nothing more on the subject. she had given him the gift of her grace and her acceptance, and he would be a fool to push the matter. he would not rile her temper after she had promised gentility and to turn a blind eye to what her policy dictated was heresy.
graciously, he clung to the change of topic and nodded. “yes, it is a little joy of mine.” when he realised that it was an open invitation, he felt a smile tug at his dour expression. “truly? i would be honoured to join you, your majesty. to where shall we ride?”

he longed to kiss her, longed to take her in his arms and know her better. it was a sin, a heinous and unforgivable sin, but for all his yearning he tried to fight it. he knew it would be a grave mistake to want her, to entertain thoughts of her in so carnal a nature, he nearly did not care. he could not carry this burden, this tension... but the more he denied it the stronger it seemed to grow.
for a moment, he felt relief. she would choose in favour of an affair, she would allow him to be close, to taste his kiss... but it was robbed of him. instead, she moved from him, and he felt a bitter coldness he had not known before. he had been with women before her and punished himself for it, but somehow this punishment was worse than any purging of sin he had ever done.
he stared across at her, unhearing. instead, he crossed the space between them again and took her into his arms. he barely gave her a moment to think before his lips crushed hers, unwilling to let her go. unwilling to let her live a life so far from him. he needed her and for the moment he allowed his soul to be damned.
Tumblr media
Anne stood from her place at his feet, from her kneeling stance. Did she have the strength to turn away from him? She did not know, truly. Her face was close to his, their lips not too far from one another. It was painful, to believe in his God. How could his God deny one of his most faithful servants the right to be with one who would serve him just as she would serve God? It did not make sense to her.
The heart of hers had grown to care deeply about this man before her. Caring both for him and his soul. Her hand came up to cradle his on her face gently, her eyes wet with the formation of possible tears.  “I will choose.”
Her voice nearly broke as she leaned closer to him, pressing her soft lips to his cheek dangerously close to his mouth. It was chaste but so full of longing. She closed her eyes as she stood there her hand slipping down unto his wrist. Pain filled her and she said a silent prayer for strength.
“I-I choose to save your soul.” She said as she stepped away from the bishop, tears beginning to fall. Her hand was shaking and she felt as if she could not breathe. Her eyes left his and went to the ground, she would not be able to withstand him if she continued to look at him. “You deserve the kingdom of heaven.. I-I cannot take that from you, for I fear you would resent me for it. And I hold you so dear to me I could not bear that you would think ill of my person.”
Perhaps she could be released, let go into one of the English towns. She would find an Englishman and become and English wife. Then- just maybe she could rid herself of this temptation; this burning desire. Her body shook both from sadness and from the cold. Her strenth was dwindling fast.
“Please- I ask your permission, let me leave and travel south- to a village to live as Christian woman.” She was still a prisoner although these days it felt more and more like home than a prison. She pray he let her go. It was torture for her to stay with him, temptation filling her.

“and you clearly do not believe you can find a life here?” he had allowed her to be spared, to give her a second chance at life, and she was so willing to squander it? “you have closed your mind to all joy you may find?”
Tumblr media
“I have no means to search. I am captive. Am I not a prisoner of this pointless war?” She asked shaking her head, “You have made it quite clear that I accept your way of living or I have no real living at all.”

He was curious what the man of God, would answer him. He liked to challenge people. He showed more emotion than he had when he was younger, but he knew that the Northmen were not ones to underestimate either. They were strong warriors. They’d fought for the people of Wessex before, well for Mercia, on behalf of Wessex.  He was not about to underestimate what they could to.
“I think it is smart to make sure that people train, especially in combat. Their settlement was destroyed. It would be foolish for us to think that the day will not come when Ragnar Lothbrok would return.”  He was shocked, it hadn’t happened yet.
Tumblr media
he listened and sat back, growing more comfortable as the situation became more casual and less strange. he was still entirely aware that he was sitting here with his god-ordained sovereign, but he was less unsettled.
“i understand. discipline can go a very long way in the ranks. if they are tried and tested, they will not break and run in fear of the northmen as some have.” he furrowed his brows. “do you believe he will return, then? and in the nearer future?” it had been so long...

“Excuse you ?”     Both blonde brows rose high at his words, && only a tight mouth by way of expression.     “Do you know all the stories, Bishop ?”      She leaned towards him, eyes slightly narrowed at the man. He was a fool for his own God obviously.     “We did not invade your lands randomly. Decades ago, arrangement was made your King, Ecbert. We had settled that he would share his lands for our people, but he betrayed it. You can only blame your King for that, not us. && do not start how we are the vile creatures here, when it is clear that we cannot trust you. You are the ones full of sins.”
“I do not care much about Ivar.”     Her smirk was back, Ivar may be destined to end her old days, but she wouldn’t surrender that easily.     “I know he hates me from the deepest of his soul, because I took away the only person who ever loved him.”      Now she was just curious of what he told the man.      “&& now, what do you expect from me ? Us ? He would have never let you go, free. You can be certain of that.”      She asked walking back from him, && gesturing around the camp.      “I am having a difficult time trusting English people after that.”      She confessed with a sigh.      “Unless you can convince me that you are not totally useless, then i do not see any other choice than killing you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he listened to her tale of woe, but he did not take heed of it. why should he? she was godless, and most of the northmen he had met were liars and deceivers. it was of no matter to him as it was. one settlement did not wash out the crimes her people had committed against the gentle folk of his country first and foremost, nor did it excuse their barbarism that had occurred since. he had not forgotten the monstrous actions they had taken against the helpless. he did not deign to answer something so vapid and chose to ignore it entirely.
“then you are a fool not to care. he presents a great danger to you. when he was my enemy i cared a great deal.” he studied her, as if attempting to size her up as a leader compared to what he had seen of ivar and his army. “why should i put my fate in your hands? i see no reason to argue my case before you. you are neither my queen nor do you believe in my god.” he gave her a puzzled look. “why did you trouble yourself with me after all?”

She didn’t understand all of what he tried to say, but the gist of it. She knew a few languages, but she wasn’t sure she understood the point of having a Christian prisoner.
“I’m a Sami Princess, from farther North. Where are you from?”  She did not know any Christians, and knew that they were not from these areas. She imagined he was from somewhere out West or something like that. He didn’t seem overly pathetic, like she’d heard all Christians were, but she was still confused.
Tumblr media
he understood absolutely nothing but ‘north’. he nodded regardless, figuring that north was far enough that the differences mattered... like it was in his own land. beyond york, the people of his own kingdom were... strange.
although he did not understand her question, he coincidentally answered it as he took his turn in explaining where he was from. he laid his hand against his chest. “from england. saxon.”

“I am trying to save you and your flock, your grace. But I ask that you help me. My advisors would sniff out the Catholics the same way my sister’s did the Protestants. Please. I ask that you keep them secret, hide in a smaller place. Bring no attention to yourselves. Show yourself in the Church of England, and save yourselves from the fire.”
If the queen had it her way really, she would let all worship how they would. She tired of the argument of which religion was right. It tired her and caused nothing thing pain, and death. “As your friend, let me help you. You have been kind to me, and I would return the same to you.”
Tumblr media
he lowered his gaze for the moment, unsure what to say. he knew that it was so small favour that she would turn a blind eye so long as he kept his church silent, but it was dangerous nonetheless. if the wrong protestants took notice of their worship, they could put them all to death and she couldn’t intervene without suffering the political consequences.
he raised his head and met her gaze with some reluctance. “you honour me, your majesty. nothing would give me a greater joy.” to even be called a friend to her highness was no small gift.

he gave a singular nod to show that he agreed with her ruling, that she had his absolute attention and his approval as a man of god. as she made it clear that she had some use for him, he raised his head again, listening to her command, his gaze following her across the room to the letter in her hand. he stared at it for a moment, before taking it in hand and tucking it in between his armour and his tunic, hidden from sight.
“i will deliver it immediately, your majesty.” he offered a sweeping bow. “there is nothing i would love more than to fight in your honour, at your side... though i am reluctant to leave your side in the interim. there are mutterings of lutheran heathens who plot against you... to do you harm. i would never be able to live with myself if they achieve their evil means.”

“One the people of England see the one true religion returned and the graces of Rome return… they will understand the late king had been wrong.” She wished no ill will towards her father, but there had been a war at her front door and she needed to end it. “There is something you can do for me.” She explained as she reached into a nearby drawer for a letter she had written the night before. “I need you to take this letter, guard it with all you have, to the Duke of Suffolk.” Holding the letter out to him, she offered him a small smile. “I will be in need of his assistance… I will take to the battlefield myself to speak to the men holding the borders. I will need both yourself and the Duke by my side.”

This man was easily seduced by the Viking ways, or so it seemed. She found herself conflicted and unsure what to say next. She was not convinced that he was honest, it was possible he was captured on purpose, here to cause conflict. Or, he could entirely want to be here, want to protect her. She would need to discuss some things with Ivar, ensure that he questioned him further.
“Why are you so quick to answer? You do not know me.” She could not help but blush a little at his obvious want to be around her. His words made her feel safe already but it also made her feel wanted and this was not something she had felt in quite some time…

he glanced at her discarded cup and then looked up at her. “i do not fear telling you that you intrigue me. not just because of your beauty.” but because she was cruel as well, and he.... well he was drawn to that. “i do not know you... but i want to.”
“besides, protecting you is far better fare than any other task that might be given to me. does it frighten you that i answered so quickly?”

his hands are stronger than his words.               DESPITE THE LANGUAGE BARRIER. she understands his words, and conveys a small nod ——– yes yes she’s mute. thats the story they are going to go with. he keeps talking, and she allows a small smile on her face as she keeps nodding, one of the words sounds harsher than the rest ( she has a small inkling he’s talking about HER PEOPLE ) she swallows back for a moment, looking back at the church she walked out of. she hopes that ivar is okay, and that her old master is okay too —– the man had never treated her cruely, and it was HORRIBLE to think that they hadn’t made it in the struggle.
her new partner looks quickly and STEPS FASTER than her, despite how deep his boots sink into the mud, his force of power allows him to move quickly, and she has to almost trot to keep up. once things look nicer around them he slows down and asks her another question, she’s not too sure WHAT TO DO. so instead, she motions to a few cuts that he has, she has healing experience. she can help ( aiding the enemy would get her hands cut off ).

“only minor injuries. you are one of the luckier ones. there are women in far worse shape.” he let out a small breath of relief as he led her away towards his tent. “come. you are safest here. no heathen will harm you now.”
as they entered the tent he let her go. “are you hungry? thirsty?” he motioned towards the table set for him laden with bread, cheese and fruit, as well as wine.

Bjorn took a lot of things seriously, too seriously, sometimes. “I give you my word as the oldest son of Ragnar and everything my father built, that I will do what I say. You help us fight, no matter the outcome, I will take you back to England. I am not much for taking Christian slaves anyway, so what use would I have for one?”  He had only bonded with one Christian slave and he did not imagine he ever would, again. He nodded. “It starts at the new full moon.”
Tumblr media
he seemed to accept that, giving a single nod. “then my sword is yours. i will fight on your side in this battle. when the fighting is done, perhaps more can be done between your people and my own when you return me home. perhaps the fighting does not need to continue between mine and yours. perhaps.. some accord can be reached.”

the look he gave her for daring to touch his person was icy, as if warning her to never dare such a thing again. “then why did you broach a subject you did not wish to speak of?” she had been the one to bring it up, and now she challenged him for being polite? he knew better than to waste his time, and considered walking away briefly as he turned to look at the way ivar had gone.
Manon frowned. No matter how relatable they were she would not reveal the secrets of her Matron. Though he mouth quivered, wanting to drown him in her world and her past. Never had she told anyone about Blackbeaks nor did anyone remember them. When she first came down for her mission not one could think of the name that went along with her branded symbol, they did not know the story of her family’s banishment.
“I cannot say.” She said, distantly. “We have only met and you want me to spill such dark secrets?” The woman tsked, touching a finger tip to his nose. “You silly Godly man.”
