From my understanding, the majority of the “cowboys” were European farmers/landowners that were enticed into living in the Americas by promises of land. However, the European government in the Americas did not have enough land to give all of them that land, leading to a period of European “land starvation,” in which many European landowners took matters into their own hands and stole land. There was a large political controversy, in which the representative European governments were torn between needing to punish lawbreakers, and being literally unable to, what with their extremely limited military presence in the settlements. Since these lands lead to further riches for the government, the controversy was settled quickly.

The “Cowboy” mythos, as I understand it, came from the media industries’ depiction of similar situations, where people were living in settlements far from standardized governmental/military support, relying on limited law enforcement, where most people defended the ‘law’ as they determined it themselves, banditry was common (European frontiersmen stole land from eachother as much as they did from the american natives), and american natives were seen as “savages.” I think you may be confusing Spanish colonizers for Mexican cowboys there, kropokitten. 

Fun History Fact: The overwhelming majority of cowboys in the U.S. were Indigenous, Black, and/or Mexican persons. The omnipresent white cowboy is a Hollywood studio concoction meant to uphold the mythology of white masculinity.

Though apparently muggle things don’t work on Hogwarts grounds because there’s too much magic in the air or some shit. And you can’t use a net to catch a ket way the hell up our of reach.
