       I’ve been thinking. I guess that alone is part of why I’m writing this instead of calling. Some things are easier to say when you don’t have to say them out loud, you know? There’s something a little less scary about it when you don’t have to be there for the reaction. So there’s an apology for all the times I made fun of you spending hours on letters back in the day, sort of. I think I get it now. But that’s not what I was gonna say. I know, I’m still managing to stall. 

       What I actually wanted to say was, I’m kind of worried about you? Even if you put on a brave face or whatever, I can still see you’re not doing that well, and it’s… frustrating. I don’t know what to do to help, even though you were there for me whenever I was sad, and even if I can’t fix what’s hurting you, I want to make it a little easier if I can. I owe you that much. 

       I know I’ve said not to call me if you’re just gonna be a bother, but I take it back, okay? You can call me anytime, even if it’s just to talk about something stupid. Or something important that just feels stupid. Actually, call me especially if it’s something like that. I’ll come over with dinner and we can, I don’t know, watch a movie or something? Just… don’t keep it in, or I’m just gonna worry even more. 

       I don’t say this a lot, but I do care about you, okay? So call me when you get this. If you don’t, I’m gonna come over and pull you out of bed by your hair if I have to.

       There are multiple kinds of formal events, in Lovino’s experience, and this type doesn’t rank very high on his list. The diplomats, ambassadors, and politicians accompanying them continue to succumb to the most boring topics of conversation, of which he himself has long grown tired of after the preceding few days - and at an evening event where one is encouraged to relax, eat, socialise, and dance, Lovino intends to do exactly that. And judging by Roderich’s expression at being asked to join in, he’s not alone in his restlessness. 

       “ Hmm. You haven’t seen me dance much for quite some time, right? ” Taking the offered hand and resting his other on Roderich’s shoulder blade, Lovino steers the two of them to a good space, slightly away from the non-dancing guests.  “ Well, I’ll admit I’m better at tango than the waltz these days, but I’m not sure this is the right venue, so… we’ll just have to make do. ” 

       A small, almost confident smile curls on his lips; Roderich may have more prime courtly experience than him with these things, but he has diligently kept his own dance skills up over time. In an almost intuitive, fluid motion, he nudges Roderich along with him at an appropriate point in the melody, tuning out the quiet chatter as his steps turn quick and precise, rapidly pulling him along for a Viennese waltz.

HE   IS   PULLED   FROM   CONVERSATION   by   surprise ,   brows   raising   at   the   confident   request .   a   smile   plays   on   his   lips   as   he   sets   down   his   wine .   WHO   IS   HE   TO   REFUSE ?   besides ,   the   night   has   been   awfully   boring   &   tiring   anyway ,   &   while   roderich   can   keep   up   pretenses   well   enough   around   his   diplomats ,   it   is   still   taking   a   toll   on   him —   all   this  discussion   of   funds   that   he   knows  are   not   what   they   used   to   be . 

❛      well ,    why   ever   not ?   let   us   see   whether   my   darling   husband   had   kept   his  promise   &   kept   you   up   to   date   on   all   the   courtly   dances .      ❜    he   places   an   easy   hand   on   lovino ’ s   shoulder ;   one   in   his   palm .   their   heights   make   this   a   little   awkward ,   but   it   will   have   to   do .

Roderich steps up closer, eyes thoughtfully sweeping Lovino up and down. He tilts his chin up with a finger. "A good choice of colour- it doesn't wash you out."

      The touch is delicate, but not quite gentle, and though Lovino should really be used to this by now, there’s still a part of him that briefly freezes up at the contact. He inhales quietly through his nose, as though any superfluous noise might be frowned upon, before he shakes off the old habit and raises his eyebrows, though his head remains perfectly still; upholding that precarious balance between obedience and attitude that he has become so familiar with.

       “ Bet you thought I didn’t listen when you went on about what I ought to wear. ” 

       Maybe, just a little bit, he did want to impress Roderich; while he certainly knows how to dress himself right these days without anyone’s help, the deep eggplant purple is a bolder choice of shirt than usual - and a colour that Roderich himself suggested, though quite some time ago - alongside a slim black tie with matching pants. Whether he wants validation or simply his attention, though, is up in the air.

       The act of being perceived and judged is one Lovino has a mixed relationship with, but he knows this particular type of observation well enough that he can’t quite complain. An appreciative glance, too bold to go unnoticed, is more than enough to light his nerves and trickle along his spine, and feeling somewhat self-conscious, he subtly straightens his back, leaning his weight on one hip. When Gabriel’s gaze eventually ceases to wander, Lovino holds it with his own for a long moment, before he props up a cocky smile.
