Credence by Penelope Douglas Review
Tumblr media
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trigger warnings: This book contains violence and Dub-Con situations if any of those topics is an issue for you I would not pick this one up.
I read this book in one sitting and I could not recommend it enough for those who like dark romances. For a non spoiler review check out my goodreads or keep reading for lots of spoilers.
Goodreads review
This is the first Penelope Douglas book I’ve ever picked up, and if all of her books are this addicting I’ll be binging her other books very soon. The way she writes the scenery in this book made me want to pack up and move to the mountains of Colorado even though I hate the snow. The characters in this story are so fleshed out and realistic I felt like I was reading about real people. Tiernan is such a flawed person, but her flaws make her seem more human than most heroines I’ve encountered. It was easy for me to put myself in her shoes and that made the beginning half of this story so heart breaking.
The book starts with the death of Tiernan’s parents and we know from the first page they weren’t the best people. Its so sad to read about Tiernan’s relationship with her parents because she’s truly never felt the kind of love that her parents had for each other. This is a big obstacle for her throughout the book when she tries to connect with the boys. The scene where Jake confronts her about how she never asks about their life had me tearing up. The way Jake cares for her and shows her how a family is supposed to act (minus the part where she sleeps with him lol)
I really liked Tiernan and Noah’s relationship throughout the story. I never really saw them as an actual couple just because it was clear that the both of them needed the friendship more than the romantic side of their relationship. I liked how similar her and Noah are and how in the end Tiernan helps Noah pursue his dream of moving out of Colorado.
A lot of the reviews I’ve seen for credence commented on how under developed Kaleb’s character was compared to Jake and Noah. Kaleb only speaks towards the end of the book and is a selective mute throughout the rest of the book. I think going into this book knowing Tiernan ends up with Kaleb made me more aware of the subtle development of their relationship. At times Kaleb is a very problematic love interest especially when he writes the word ‘Sl*t’ on Tiernan’s forehead after she sleeps with Jake. The middle portion of the book made me really hate him, but as we’re told more about his past and why he acts the way he does I could understand why he lashed out at Tiernan the way he did.
Overall this story was so addicting and one of my favorite books of the year. I will be looking into reading Penelope’s Devil’s Night series because I’ve heard good things. If I enjoy that series half as much as I enjoyed Credence I will for sure be adding Penelope Douglas to my list of favorite authors.
