The reason I'm so vulgar in regards to Aang's crush on Katara is that his crush on her is very superficial. He thinks she's pretty and nice, but he makes no effort to get to know or understand her. He doesn't accept the parts of her that he doesn't like.
We get the male gaze from him a couple of times at Katara. He clearly finds her attractive. Katara is confirmed to be considered attractive in universe. She gives him emotional support. And then...that's it.
Aang doesn't care to find out what happened to Katara's mom, one of if not the most single important event in her life. He always gets surprised when she gets mad at something. He hates the food and culture that she loves so much. He doesn't respect her boundaries and kisses her twice without her consent. He keeps trying to talk for her when she's angry. And he expects her to do the work for their "relationship." After he kisses her, he's upset that SHE didn't talk to HIM about their "relationship."
Just because he kissed her without her consent once, he thinks they're exclusive. He's a literal child who doesn't have the maturity to handle a romantic relationship.
Aang wants the beautiful image of Katara. He wants that pretty face, those big blue eyes, that body, those long legs, those hips, the chest, and the hair that is just so manageable.
He has no interest in the complex, strong, hurt, angry, and caring person that Katara actually is.
I'm calling it like I see it. Aang doesn't actually like Katara; he's just really horny for her. There's a difference.

The entire premise of the show is that these kids and teenagers give up everything to help this one kid who is more interested in getting into his friend's pants than in saving the world: THE ONE THING HE'S SUPPOSED TO DO.
How is Aang a terrible friend? Genuine question. I know he’s a mess in regards to katara and his family, but I never heard anything about him and his friends
There isn't much to hear about him and his friends, is there? He's friendly and likable and that gets him surrounded by friends who themselves are selfless and brave. That makes him look pretty good by association, but the deep, character shaping moments he's a part of are to his benefit. He has all these great friends to turn when he needs them, but who turns to him when they need comfort? The strongest showing I can think of that he had as a friend was sneaking to teach Katara waterbending when she was refused. That lasted right up until he was confronted by Pakku. Then Katara stood up to Pakku and called him on his stupidity, and Aang instead of standing ten toes down for his friend told Pakku she didn't mean it. Like consummate people pleaser he is. Katara fought that battle alone.
Let's not forget the way he literally blew up at his friends in the desert when Appa was kidnapped. Don't get me wrong, his being upset was completely understandable, but a good friend would apologize for that. Toph especially didn't deserve that for him, and she never gets an apology.
Aang is a terrible friend for the same reason he's a terrible partner and father. He's selfish. He receives way more than he gives. Yeah, he's cheerful and fun to be around, but that doesn't make him a good friend. Toph is a better friend, and she hardly gets any of her own story on screen.

You know what Bryke thought was important to the story that they had to include it in almost every episode? Aang being horny for Katara. That was important enough to be shown on screen.
How is this the greatest cartoon ever made again?
What do you think of Zuko and Aang's friendship?
It exists? I don't know...I feel like that one scene after Zuko rescued Aang and Aang asked if they could've been friends in another life is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Don't get me wrong, that was a cute moment, and I like the call back when Zuko joins the Gaang, but aside from that...there isn't much substance there. I've said it before, but I don't think Aang was a particularly good friend to anyone. He got way more support than he ever gave, and I don't understand this idea that Aang was somehow Zuko's best friend. I know the bar is low, but dang...

I mean, their friendship started with their crystal cave scene in Ba Sing Se and it did mean something to them. They connected. Yes, we know he turned on them too, but The Southern Raiders proved Zuko's sincerity to her and restarted their friendship.
As for Zuko and Aang, Zuko does care about Aang. The problem with firebenders is that they get so dead set on their goals that they get tunnel vision. That's why Zuko wasn't really listening to Toph when she was spilling her guts to him in The Phoenix King. Same with Aang. He does care, but he also knows that he's there to do a job: train the avatar in firebending. He's not there to have beach parties.
Could Aang have been more active on his side of the friendship? Yes, but we all know that was never Aang's priority. Aang's crush on Katara is one of the most important things to him second only to Appa. It's one of the reasons I don't like Aang.

After Zuko joins the gang, they hang out together once. After The Firebending Masters, Zuko was in sifu mode. And that's it. Even in The Ember Island Players and The Phoenix King, Zuko trains Aang and then just sorta walks off.
And yeah, I get it. Bryke wanted Zuko in the gang as little as possible because they hated how popular zutara was. Whatever.
BUT, if you're gonna push Aang as some kinda "friend to all" you actually have to show him being a friend to all.
If ANYONE was Zuko's "best friend" in the gang, it would be Katara. And that's not zutara glasses talking. After The Southern Raiders, the two were basically joined at the hip for The Ember Island Players and the entire finale.

can someone explain to me how muses and shit work? because usually i submit an ask and then they'll be all like "don't tell my muses what to do" and then i'll be like i submitted a prompt. Do I just tell the chick what to do and not the guy? or just the guy and not the chick? or does it have to be super vague? i'm so confused.

and we all know what Aang really wanted from Katara because as soon as he got Tenzin it was like, "See you later other two kids."
That's why I always say that Aang's true goal was to bang Katara. No reason to sugarcoat it. He thought she was pretty. Never bothered to learn or understand her. And kept having kids until he got the one he wanted.
But don't kill Ozai, because then the Fire Nation would really have wiped out your culture.
Help. I wanted to write a broken, misguided, almost-but-not-quiet-villain Aang, but my hand slipped and I am turning the Kataang relationship in my fic into an absolute fucking nightmare T_T I just didn't want the characters to be so black-and-white, you know, but the longer I write, the more this turns into a story about emotional abuse. Now I'm trying to kind of do both angles.
It doesn't have to be a choice. The thing about most abusers is that they aren't outright villains. A lot of them are very charming, fun, and smart. A lot of them are pillars of the community, and even genuinely believe in their causes. But they are also selfish, possessive and think that their partners are an extension of themselves. Maybe Aang doesn't think he thinks that of Katara. Maybe he thinks the way he treats her is normal until it's pointed out. Maybe he tries to course correct, but then backtracks because he thinks he's losing her because she did her makeup or hair in a new way that gets her compliments from other men.
If you're writing from Katara's POV, maybe she still sees the sweet, fun loving boy she met a long time ago. Maybe she blames herself for being too quick to jump to anger for him lashing out and tries to fix herself. Maybe she thinks if she does everything he needs -keep his schedule, cook his meals, take on all the domestic and childcare labor- he can focus on being the best Avatar/whatever his career is in this fic. The thing about abuse is there's a lot of rationalizing going on on both ends. After all, no one goes into a relationship thinking their s/o is going to turn out to be a monster. And a lot of times, they don't even see how bad it was until well after they leave. If you're worried you're making this relationship too one note, ask yourself why Katara hasn't left yet. Or why it's taken this long for her to decide to leave.

And how would he know any different? His people don't believe in relationship like that. They were freaking monks who lived in temples separated by sex and didn't have "traditional" family units. He would be just making shit up. His relationship with Katara would go against his people's teachings, but that's okay? But going against his people's teachings to save the world is not okay? So he just gets to pick and choose what part of his people's teachings he has to follow?
God I hate kataang
