Borderlands 3 Smashes 2K Sales Records
Tumblr media
Within the first five days of sale Borderlands 3 sold over 5 million copies according to the game’s publisher, 2K. Those numbers represent a 50% increase over Borderlands 2′s launch sales, making it the fastest selling 2K game to date.
The numbers seem more impressive when the controversial decision to launch the game on PC through the Epics Game Store exclusively is considered. Many gamers, had voiced their intention to boycott as a result.
In a press release 2K addressed the project’s success:
"Borderlands 3 delivered the highest pre-order sales figures to date for a 2K title, as well as broke pre-order records with the Epic Games Store. Initial sales of Borderlands 3 have exceeded the label’s expectations and, in particular, PC sales of the title through the Epic Games Store have been incredibly strong."
What’s even more remarkable is the fact that over 70% of the games sales were digital.

Rumored Titanfall Battle Royale Hero Shooter Could Drop Tomorrow
Tumblr media
UPDATE: Respawn CEO Vince Zampella confirmed the existence of Apex Legends in the following tweet:
So, if you like Respawn, our games or even me, you should tune in tomorrow. Our stream starts at 8am pt and we’ll tell you everything about Apex Legends. Everything.
ORIGINAL STORY FOLLOWS:
According to some rather reliable sources, an all-new free-to-play Titanfall battle royale/hero shooter called Apex Legends could be announced as early as tomorrow, Monday, February 4th. The initial report came from Youtuber The Quartering, and that report was further corroborated by esports consultant Rod Breslau.
In a series of tweets Breslau said,
“Apex Legends will feature classes/heroes with unique abilities, maximum of 60 players per server, maximum of 3 players per team (trios) to compliment each other. No titans. Just as Titanfall and Titanfall 2, Apex Legends will run on a modified version of Valve's Source engine.
Micro-transactions and lootboxes for cosmetic items and in-game content are said to be in Apex Legends with a very similar approach to that in Overwatch.“
Several rumours surfaced in 2018 claiming that Titanfall 3 would release this year despite Respawn’s Star Wars game being slated for release this year too. That prospect seemed unlikely as studios don’t normally launch different projects against one another within a window when one could hurt the other’s sales. However, if the Titanfall fall game were to be a F2P battle royale shooter that wouldn’t be competing for wallet-share with the Star Wars project, that might not seem so crazy.

Dr. Mario World Coming to Mobile This Summer
Who Wouldn’t Want A Doctor That’s Also A Plumber?
Tumblr media
Earlier today Nintendo announced that it is bringing another of it’s classic franchises to mobile devices with Dr. Mario World. The game is slated for an ‘early summer’ release as the result of a partnership between Nintendo and LINE Corporation.
The game looks as if it will operate within a free to play pricing model with ‘optional in-app purchases’.
Dr. Mario World is the latest in a respectable batch of Nintendo games aimed at the mobile market. The game will exist alongside the likes of Pokemon GO, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes and the recently delayed mobile Mario Kart to name a few.
The original Dr. Mario was released in 1990, and has seen several re-releases over the years. The good doctor (plumber?) has also been a playable character in several editions of Super Smash Brothers.

Hitman Developer Opens New Studio
Tumblr media
IO Interactive announced it has opened a new studio in Malmö, Sweden.
In a post on IOI’s website on Wednesday, IO’s CEO Hakan Abrak said,
“We are super excited and proud to announce IOI Malmö. We will expand IOI to join a buzzing game developer community and bring our own unique IOI culture to this amazing town.“
This news would seem to suggest that the studio’s decision to buy themselves out from Square Enix in 2017 has proven to be prosperous one.
The new Malmö office are already up and running working on Hitman related content. The new studio will also allow for resources to be dedicated to new projects from both IOI studios.
Abrak has described both studios as, “one family.”

Activision and Bungie Split
Bungie Gets Custody of the Kids
Tumblr media
Activison and Bungie have ended their publishing relationship which began in 2010. Bungie will retain the rights to publish Destiny going forward.
According to Blizzard, Destiny 2 will continue to be supported on BattleNet and no disruptions to service or gameplay are anticipated.
Destiny franchise director, Luke Smith, says Destiny is the only project the studio is persuring right now. In the immediate future, it seems as though Bungie’s plans are unchanged. The studio will continue to develop content for Destiny 2′s annual pass. Looking further down the road Smith said,
“Long-term, Bungie is committed to Destiny. We created the universe and we hold its future entirely in our hands. The vast majority of the team is hard at work envisioning future experiences, enemies, and ways to play the Guardian you've been building since 2014. We're going to keep doing that.”
This marks the second time Bungie has opted to split with a high profile publishing partner since they left Microsoft back in 2007.

Bioware Teases new Dragon Age At The Game Awards
The Dread Wolf Rises
Tumblr media
This article contains spoilers for Dragon Age Inquisition
An all new Dragon Age was teased during Thursday Night’s 2018 Game Awards. It would appear that the new project will indeed pick up where DA: Inquisition left off.
The trailer dipicts a large painting with a large wolf on one side and an elf on the other with a statue filled with red lyrium in the middle. The painting is very likely a reference to Solas who was revealed to be an elven god known as the Dread Wolf in the epilogue of DA: Inquisition.

The State of Microsoft Heading Into 2019
Tumblr media
During Microsoft’s annual shareholders meeting this past week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about the company’s ambitious approach to gaming.
“…in gaming, we’re pursuing an expansive opportunity from the way the games are created and distributed to how they’re played and viewed. And we’re investing aggressively in the content, community and cloud services across every endpoint to expand the usage and deepen engagement with gamers, including the 57 million monthly Xbox Live users. Finally, we added seven new gaming studios to bolster the first party content for fast growing gaming services like Xbox Game Pass subscription service as well as Mixer.”
Microsoft’s gaming revenue exceeded $10 billion in 2018, and the company believes that Game Pass and Project xCloud will allow them to extend their reach beyond the two billion people who currently play games today. They see Game Pass as a means to extend market share by the same means Netflix and Spotify have.
According to industry analyst Mat Piscatella, the Xbox One X is performing very strongly.
“Xbox One sales show the highest growth of the three major hardware platforms in the U.S. this year, and the Xbox One X in particular has been performing phenomenally... year-over-year growth like this at this point in the cycle has never been seen before, driven by launch of the Xbox One X and new content delivery efforts. It's a mid-generation turnaround the market's never seen before. This qualifies as phenomenal, even if not market leading.”
As this week ended Microsoft finished ahead of Apple becoming the worlds most valuable publicly traded company in the US, a feat that Microsoft hasn’t achieved since 2003.
All things considered 2019 is shaping up to be a strong year for Microsoft, even if gamers might not reap the rewards of the company’s aggressive studio acquisitions for another year or two.

Netflix Cancels Daredevil
Tumblr media
Justice truly is blind.
In what can only be described as a ‘baffeling decision’, Netflix has pulled the plug Daredevil after 3 seasons. Daredevil is perhaps the most critically acclaimed colaboration between Marvel and Netlfix. Netflix’s satement follows:
“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
Daredevil now joins both Luke Cage and Iron Fist as cancelled Marvel projects on Netflix. Only Jessica Jones and The Punisher remain untouched at present.
The blame for these cancelations has been placed at Disney’s feet by many. With the imminent launch of Disney’s streaming service Disney+, these cancelations would indicated they they intend to be the only platform that offers original Marvel TV content.
There has been no word if the cancelled Marvel/Netflix shows will be able to live on at Disney’s new service.

New Dragon Age Announcement Imminent
Tumblr media
In a blog post today, Bioware’s General Manager Casey Hudson suggested that we should brace ourselves for information regarding the next Dragon Age.
Hudson wrote,
“If you’ve been following these blogs, or myself and Mark Darrah on Twitter, you know we’re also working on some secret Dragon Age stuff.  Dragon Age is an incredibly important franchise in our studio, and we’re excited to continue its legacy.  Look for more on this in the coming month (though I won’t tell you where to look…).”
While it’s assumed, it remains to be seen if the project in mention is a sequel to 2014′ s Dragon Age: Inquisition. Some may be forgetting that back in 2016 Dragon Age Executive Producer Mark Darrah asked the community if they’d be interested in a Dragon Age Tactics-style game.
In what is likely not a conincidence, Dragon Age II has recently been announced as one of December’s Games With Gold.

My Top Five E3 Announcements
With another E3 come and gone, I wanted to take a quick look back at some of the most awesome things E3 showed us this year.
1)      Smash Bros Ultimate
Continuing with their recent tradition of going with a much more subdued E3 Presence, Nintendo again opted for a pre-recorded E3 presentation. While it’s not as exciting as a full blown E3 presser hype-fest, that didn’t stop Nintendo from dropping jaws in a major way. Not only was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate confirmed for launch this holiday season, but the aforementioned Smash game contains every single character from every single smash game to date. EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. In case you were wondering, that over 60 characters. That’s the kind of mic drop announcement that E3 was built on.
2)      Rage 2
Even though Walmart Canada totally spoiled this surprise ahead of E3, that didn’t stop Rage 2 from impressing me. The demo opened up with a quick vehicle combat sequence that showed the ranger’s buggy blasting bandit vehicles with rockets and other fiery ballistics that resulted in spectacular vibrant explosions. The gunplay looked as tight as Destiny’s while the overall combat still seemed fluid. The Ranger seemed to have a directional dash a la Halo 5 and slides as well. A gravity power was showed that sucked enemies inward and then blasted them away. That power was combined with one of Rage’s signature wingsticks, that was hurled at a floating enemy to deadly effect. Other powers include a ground pound, a kind of tackle called shatter that sends enemies floating through the air and a kind of rage mode that makes your weapons deadlier. Looks to be another solid shooter from Bethesda!
3)      Anthem
One of E3 2017 most anticipated games, Anthem returned to EA’s stage this year to give us a look at actual gameplay! The presentation revealed that players will have the option of 4 combat suits called javelins, any of which can be used when the mood strikes. Bioware stressed very much that you are the pilot, not the suit, as such you’ll be free to use whichever you like based on your needs. The Ranger, The Colossus, The Interceptor and The Storm will be the Javelins you’ll be able to choose from. In this demo we mostly saw The Ranger, which seems to be the balanced, jack of all trades suit, and the Colossus which is the heavy, slower tank, with massive fire power. Much to my delight, the combat seems to feature tons and tons of floating damage numbers, different gear, unique powers and even combo attacks. This has ‘shoot N loot RPG’ written all over it! Anthem very much appears to be the Iron Man game we’ve always wanted, where flying through the sky and blasting baddies with barrages of artillery are common place. Whether or not Anthem can effectively address the content issues that plague Destiny remains to be seen, but I’m personally optimistic about Bioware being the right company to figure it out.
4)      Spider-Man
Much like their 2017 E3 conference, Sony prominently featured Insomniac’s Spider-Man again this year. Rather than swinging around the streets of New York, this years demo had the Wall Crawler slinging himself through the corridors of the raft in pursuit of Electro. One of the most notable features of Spider-Man is how impressively agile and fluid every movement seemed to be. That goes not only for map traversal but combat as well. In traversal Spidey can sling himself forward from just about any ledge, run on walls and swing and bounce on just about anything else in between. The combat seems a lot like the very successful Batman Arkham combat system in terms of striking and counters, but whereas Batman is swift and tank-like, Spider-Man is bouncy and acrobatic. The demo showed enemies being launched into the air where there were helpless to defend from an airborne beat-down, pieces of debris and shields being torn away and used as projectile weapons with webbing, and a ton of cool web attacks, too. If the rest of the game can live up to the demos we’ve seen at E3, it’s possible Insomniac has created the Spider-Man experience I’ve been waiting for since the 90’s Spider-man cartoon hooked me as a child.
5)      The Xbox of Tomorrow
This year, Xbox had what is probably it’s greatest E3 showing ever. With about 50 games on stage there was a lot to love about this year’s presser, but the greatest thing Phil Spencer and the rest of the Xbox team showed wasn’t a game. It was a clear vision of the Xbox of Tomorrow. Spencer announced 5 all-new first party studios bringing the total number from 6 to 11. They’ve nearly doubled their in-house game development stable. Also announced was Faststart, a new service that lets players download and start playing games twice as fast. Finally, in a rather vague but no less impressive description, Phil Spencer announced plans for a streaming service that would allow for console quality gaming on any device. For a more in-depth look at this highlight, you can check out my feature on the Xbox of Tomorrow, here.
E3 2018 shone particularly bright for an E3 that didn’t feature any new hardware, which makes trying to pick 5 events from hundreds a particularly daunting task. I went with my gut and picked the top E3 highlights that captured my imagination. How does my list stack up against yours? Let me know in the comments!

E3 Coverage: Ubisoft Outlines End Game Road Map for The Division 2
Raids Coming to The Division2
Tumblr media
At Ubisoft’s E3 press conference, Julian Gerighty, creative director of The Division 2, outlined several end-game components for the upcoming cover-based shoot-n-loot.
Once players finish the campaign, they will be able to choose one of three specializations that are complete with class specific weapons and skills.
Gerighty also confirmed that raids are coming to the Division for the first time. Raids will allow for 8 players to team up against, what he calls, “the ultimate end-game challenge.”
To the surprise and delight of many, Ubisoft’s year one plans for The Division 2 include three major DLCs, all of which are free. That’s right. Free. Each DLC will contain new story elements, new areas to explore and new activities.
