“At nine-years-old I transform into things I have never been before: ‘astronaut suspended in space hummingbird buzzing in place soap bubble escaping my mother’s kitchen sink beam of august light floating through the leaves.’”

I care so deeply about so little.
Things lost: my sex drive, his hair, our first apartment
In English, you say I am afraid. In Spanish, you say I have fear. I like that better.

When we met I was just manic episodes and anxiety attacks about unwashed dishes.
In my dreams you held my wrists, you applied cold washcloths to my temple.
In reality you just blinked and ran your hands through your hair.
In my dreams you hold my wrists and this time it means fucking.
In my dreams I’m not hundreds of miles away.
I’m not smoking cigarettes with men who kiss me teeth first: All bite, no patience,
blaming me for being too fragile when my lip starts bleeding.
In my dreams we got it right the first time and ended up in some Missouri town barefoot and smiling teeth first: All love, no bite.
I left because I knew I could never be that woman. I could never leave behind my bite.

I thought she was sleeping until I heard her call out from across the room, “Will you bring me a glass of water?” I did. Then in her always-sleepy tone and drawl she said, “Do you remember when you were a little boy and you would ask your mama to bring you a glass of water?” Yeah. “You know how half the time you weren’t even thirsty. You just wanted that hand that was attached to that glass that was attached to that person you just wanted to stay there until you fell asleep.” She took the glass of water that I brought her and just sat it down full on the table next to her. Wow, I thought. What am I gonna do with love like this.

You smile at me
You smile at me
It’s a Wednesday
It’s early so we still have our honeymoon hearts
You smile at me
It’s a Wednesday
It’s early so we still have our honeymoon hearts
Get off exit 269
You smile at me
But this time it isn’t you
“it’s over isn’t it?” he says
I don’t respond because we both know the answer
It’s a Sunday
I take the exit but it’s no longer home
You smile at me
I really fucking hope it’s Wednesday
It’s late so there’s no honey left
Exit 269
But you’re smiling so I miss it
But you’re smiling so I hit the guard rail instead
You’re smiling at me
And then you aren’t
You aren’t even crying
You’re just bleeding and I know I’m losing you and I know you’re my fault
It’s no longer Wednesday
You’re smiling at me
And I know you’re my fault
I made you into something you never wanted to be
Then I crashed the car
And you still loved me anyways
You’re smiling at me
I wish you didn’t love me anyways
