I thought I was a minority
I thought I needed a crowd to survive
Who was I to stand alone?
How could I stand without the crowd?
I needed them and leaned
Only to find myself staggering into an abyss
They weren't enough to hold me up
They couldn't even hold themselves up
Then I noticed
I was still upright - even in the abyss
Something... Someone was holding me up
The same thing holding the crowd up
A Constant.
God.
So I leaned in
And I was no longer alone
I'm grateful to the One who holds me up
Who is constant enough to lean on fearlessly.

Despite the bad times
The wrong choices
The betrayals and the pain
Somehow there are these moments...
Filled with laughter and joy
Sometimes right in the middle of pain
Other times I remember
How my life was preserved and enhanced
But by luck... chance... favor
Someone rescues me, another warns
Something keeps me from going over the ledge
And I continue to move forward
At this time I acknowledge
That it took less than this for others
Their lives ended and all their dreams died
Yet, despite some bad choices - I'm okay
I'm a product of Grace, Favor, Dumb luck?
Clearly, I have a reason to be thankful

I'll be thankful tomorrow
When things are better
When my dreams have come true
I can wait to be properly thankful
I just have to work and try harder
I just have to wait till it's big enough
I'll save my joy for tomorrow
I'll conserve my energy till then
No point celebrating the small things today
Today...

I look back and I realize

Complaints are intuitive
When something is wrong
Bitter feelings suffocate you
Pain lodges firmly in your throat
You may find it hard to breathe
And the words you speak are filled with poison
They may hurt others or be offensive to God
But their poison touches you first
In celebrating what is wrong
You lose sight of what is right
You lose sight of what is possible
Thankfulness is conscious effort
When things are wrong
Speaking words of thankfulness seems unjust
Especially if it may absolve others
Or if it suggests God still deserves your thanks
It feels to you like you are paying for pain
As though you are admitting you deserve it
But it is thankfulness that heals you
By celebrating of what is right
You shrink the power of what is wrong
You gain vision for possibilites

Complaints vs. Thankfulness Pt. 2 - Intro

Back in September 2018 I started a series titled Complaints vs. Thankfulness. I only did three posts on it and I couldn't complete the series which I had wanted to make 7 posts long because of the seven songs that had inspired the series back then.
At the time, I had been struggling with being formally unemployed for about 3 years. I wasn't starving or living on the streets but being constantly at home was getting to me. One day, whilst I was complaining - albeit internally, a song came on and it was about thankfulness. It took that one song to help me realize that if I kept on complaining, I would remain miserable and so I decided to choose thankfulness and unwittingly - hope came along for the ride.
Interestingly, it was just a week after those three posts that my long wait came to an abrupt end. My thankfulness somehow took me where my complaints never did. However, I was unable to finish the posts as planned. It has now been 3 years since I started that series and I intend to finish it - for now - and inspiration has coincidentally struck right around thanksgiving!
The posts I will be sharing in the next few days were written to achieve 1 aim - to reflect and shift your perception on the past year.
This year was a challenging one for me and it probably was for you too but but if we reflect back on it, as I have, we may realize that there are MORE REASONS TO BE THANKFUL than to complain.
I will be posting at 7:30am everyday from Monday 21st November 2021 to Thursday 26th November 2021. The posts on Wednesday and Thursday will be twice a day with the second post of the day at 4pm to the commemorate thanksgiving celebrations- Watch Out for them!
