mia-castellan‌:
Mia was thankful that the Weasleys had allowed her to stay in their house for the time being. She was once again (kind of) homeless after suddenly leaving her former apartment because the neighbors had started spreading rumors. Technically, the Werewolf could have returned to her parent’s house - it was abandoned but she had never been able to sell it - but with HIM officially back she didn’t deem it safe enough.
As some kind of repaying the Weasleys for their kindness, the white-haired woman did what she could - for them and the Order. One of those things had been making the Burrow Werewolf-proof. It involved a bunch of spells people usually only bothered to learn if they were actually interacting with Werewolves. For example a spell that would detect and sound the alarm if a Werewolf entered the property on full moon.
When Molly asked Mia to bring Draco Malfoy some food she instantly agreed. Not only because she felt being in her debt but also because she wanted to help him. He was young, a fairly new Werewolf and had left behind major parts of his life. Beast and Woman both wanted to protect and help him.
With two plates in her hands - one filled with sandwiches, the other with fruit - knocking proved itself as difficult so the white-haired Witch simply shoved the door open. The blond didn’t sound too happy about the interruption, but then again he wasn’t exactly known as the sunshine type of person. “I brought you food.”, she answered. There was a softness in her voice she rarely allowed to surface.
The Werewolf kept a safe distance from the cauldron in order to avoid ruining the potion. Because while Mia did have an idea what the boy was brewing, she did not know what might happen if it was being messed with - and Mia didn’t want it to accidentally blow up in their faces.

He’d meant it to be a bit more snappish, but he’s a little too tired to let his usual bitterness come across. He had barely slept since the events at the Astronomy Tower, and when he had slept it had been fitful. Now, he’s alone, surrounded by people who might as well be his enemies, considering all that’s happened.
He turns over his hourglass and settles back from the cauldron. The potion needs to simmer for exactly an hour now. Draco sighs, lifting his gaze at last. She most likely didn’t come here just to bring him food. While he’d been careful to keep his secret, well, secret, he knows she’ll be able to tell. And he’s pretty sure that’s the real reason. It’s got to be.
He catches his lip between his teeth. ❝ So, what else do you want? ❞

Draco supports Hermione as Minister for Magic. He probably won’t announce it. Mainly because he doesn’t want to deal with backlash from his parents and he knows their feelings on the matter, but also because he knows his support might not have a very good effect on the opinions of the Wizarding World as a whole. But he might tell her privately, depending on if they’re actually on speaking terms or not.

THE NEED FOR A RELATIONSHIP
Draco needs someone. regardless of how long after the war it is, regardless of who it is, there is no scenario in which he’ll be able to completely pull himself out of his post-war depression alone. He might survive, but there’s no way he’ll be able to reinvent himself and start over on his own. He needs support, as much as he’d like to think he can do everything on his own, he knows he can’t. But more than that, he needs someone who will show him that he can become a new and better person, because he honestly thinks he’s too far gone.
Whether that someone is a very close friend, platonic partner, or romantic partner/spouse, Draco will need that kind of support and incentive. He values himself very little, he needs to become better for someone else. He didn’t become a good person after the war, he became less of a person. His ideals and values were turned on their head, and he doesn’t really know where to turn after that. His self-esteem is cripplingly low, he knows the world sees him as bad, he sees himself as bad, and he doesn’t really think he deserves a second chance. He’s seen how little the world values him, and he’s reflected that onto himself. Alone, he’ll just stagnate. What Draco needs is for someone outside of his family to let him know that he has value to them. That’s the push he’ll need to actually start to live again.

2002 onward
With Professor Slughorn’s retirement and Draco’s own publications and advancements beginning to gain some recognition, he is invited to teach Potions at Hogwarts starting in Autumn of 2002. Though Teaching was never something that Draco had considered doing with his life, but it gets him out of his room, and shows him a hint of promise for the future— that perhaps he won’t always be known as an elusive, suspicious ex-Death Eater, but as someone inspiring. That people might someday look up to him instead of away from him.
In this verse, Draco may or may not also be Head of Slytherin. It’s likely that he is, but not certain.

1998 onward
Haunted by the events of the war, Draco leaves to travel around the world, distancing himself from his problems and his past and trying to learn as much about magic as he can. He travels for years from place to place, never staying anywhere too long and moving on before he can stagnate and his problems can catch up with him.

1998-1999
Draco is invited to retake his seventh year and accepts the offer. He returns to school in September of 1998, not certain what to expect and already second-guessing his decision. He hopes that this year will allow him to reset and rebuild his reputation, but knows that this is unlikely. At the very least, perhaps it could give him an idea of how to move forward with his life.

1996-1998
Draco accepted Dumbledore’s offer of amnesty before his death, acting on his dislike of Voldemort’s goals and not wishing to be involved with the Death Eaters anymore. After Dumbledore’s death, he goes into hiding with the Order of the Phoenix, hoping that they’ll be able to keep him safe in Dumbledore’s stead. Though not wanting to fight on the Death Eater’s side, he’s not too keen on fighting for the Order either; because he never knows if that might force him to face his parents on the battlefield.
This AU could lead to multiple scenarios, and is fairly flexible. He could either remain with the Order, join up with the Trio, or even end up on his own somehow. Though it is likely he’ll participate in the Battle of Hogwarts, it’s not certain.

1998 onward (main verse)
The war has ended, and Draco’s life has been broken into pieces that he doesn’t quite know how to put back together. He struggles to overcome significant depression and post-traumatic stress, and to find a new purpose in a changed world. Where things had once been in his favor, now he feels opposition from both sides— caution from the victors and the world overall, who now know for certain of his family’s involvement with the Death Eaters, and disdain from pureblood supremacists, who see his blood as tainted.
Without a place in the world like he’s had before, Draco retreats into himself, rarely going out into public except to pick up supplies. He finds a purpose in magical research, Potioneering, Alchemy, and Spell Creation, and, though it’s difficult, finds a way to scrape together a new life and identity.

1996-1998
This verse covers events during the second Wizarding War. Draco is initiated into the Death Eaters and then, shortly after, he’s bitten. Knowing already that he’s simply meant to be disposable, he pushes that to the back of his mind and forges ahead, though it slowly breaks him over the course of his sixth year. Seventh year, he’s a mess and struggles to hold himself together, thoroughly unhappy with Voldemort’s rule but unable and unwilling to do anything about it out of fear.
Events from the beginning of HBP through the Battle of Hogwarts will take place in this verse. It’s highly likely that threads in this verse could generate a new AU, which I might make an additional verse for.

CHARACTER DISCLAIMER: Draco Malfoy
Threads with Draco will primarily take place after the events of the books. I am also including the ‘Draco-is-a-werewolf’ theory by default in all verses.
I will not often write Draco in a canon timeline before 1996. Sixth year and beyond are fair game, though I would still prefer post-canon. Therefore, my default verse will be post-canon, and my canon verse will get little traffic, if any. This is because Draco's development is a tricky situation, and his character turned out the way he did through the canon development. So, the only canon-timeline threads I will write with Draco are AU or divergent threads.

From the very beginning, Draco's life had been planned out for him. He came into the world in a difficult time, at the height of a war which would soon be over, and was raised in an environment where his opinions and ideas were handed to him without any conflicting ideas to evaluate them against. His 'friends' were hand-picked by his parents, who made sure they were all the right sort.
Draco showed sufficient magical ability in his childhood. Though nothing remarkable, there was never a question that he was, indeed, magical. His family relationships were complicated-- his mother doted on him, and his father was often authoritarian and aloof. It was Lucius who tried hardest to influence him, and Draco therefore grew to emulate him wherever possible. Though he adored both of his parents, he often took his mother's love for granted and strove for his father's affections, which, though present, were less readily given.
His childhood was incredibly sheltered, and he was not exposed to any views outside those of his parents' until he was eleven years old-- and by then, it was easy to make a bad impression on most people he met by parroting his parents' bigotry. When Harry Potter rejected his offer of friendship-- the first time such an offer had been rejected-- Draco became incredibly bitter toward him. He felt as though Harry was trying to be better than him. Much of the next five years would then be devoted to attempting to surpass Harry Potter-- or attempting to drag him down.
While Draco's magical ability had been average during childhood, it flourished at school. He quickly became one of the top students-- consistently scoring just under Hermione Granger in most subjects except for Potions, in which he was easily top of the class. He picked up a particular talent for Transfiguration as well. In Second Year, with the Seeker position open on the Slytherin Quidditch Team, Draco tried out and landed it, excelling beyond students who were older than him. He would perform quite well as Seeker, though, ironically, his animosity toward Harry Potter would distract him during matches with Gryffindor. Outside of that, however, he proved to be a fairly talented player.
Regardless of his academic and athletic ability, however, he never quite reached high enough to satisfy his family. Falling below a Muggleborn student in his overall marks was a cause for contempt, as was consistently losing his Quidditch matches against Gryffindor. With each year, the stress upon him increased ever so slightly, and he became slightly less insufferable, slightly more withdrawn.
Fifth year, his academic achievements landed him a prefect's badge-- though at that point, his family had far more important things on their mind, and the celebration was minimal. Draco himself wasn't completely excited about Voldemort's return, and tried simply to not think about it much, using his prefect's duties (and power) as a distraction. He wasn't much of a fan of Dolores Umbridge, and only joined the Inquisitorial Squad as a means to oppose Harry Potter more directly.
Everything changed at the end of Fifth Year. His father was in Azkaban for Death Eater activities and Voldemort had already taken up residence in his family's manor as home base. Lucius' imprisonment came as a severe shock-- and was followed by a series of other such unfortunate events.
Upon returning home, Draco was almost immediately initiated into the Death Eaters and given the Dark Mark, without his or his mother's consent. He started being trained in the Dark Arts by his aunt Bellatrix, newly escaped from Azkaban. The training is grueling-- he was taught not only to cast the Imperius and Cruciatus curses, but also how to endure them, among many others. Training in Occlumency began during this time as well. Not too long after his initiation and the start of his training, however, he was sent on his first mission-- alone, at night, into a forest. His only orders: to await further instruction, and to keep his wand stowed. The mission was a ruse. Instead, Draco found himself viciously attacked by a transformed Fenrir Greyback.
Both Narcissa and he hoped briefly that it was simply a horrible accident, but those hopes were dashed swiftly when it was confirmed that Greyback had attacked on Voldemort's orders. This had been both a warning to the Malfoys, and a punishment for Lucius' failures. Draco's next mission was then revealed once he had recovered-- to kill Dumbledore.
It was clear by now that Draco was meant to die. He was being used as an example, as a punishment for his family. While at first he tried to hide that knowledge as much as he tried to hide his condition, the strain began to show quickly. For the first time in his schooling, his marks fell below average. He started missing classes frequently. He even stopped playing Quidditch or attending to his prefect's duties. Draco pushed away those that had supported him, becoming very isolated and devoted only to his mission. His bullying tendencies utterly disappeared-- instead, he was withdrawn, dark, and desperate. His rivalry with Harry Potter turned to sheer loathing, then faded into the background. The only person he consistently interacted with was Snape-- and that was only out of necessity, as Snape was tutoring him in brewing the Wolfsbane potion each month.
When Draco finally had Dumbledore in a position to kill him, he couldn't cast the curse, he could only go so far as to disarm the Headmaster. Had the Death Eaters not arrived, Draco may have even gone so far as to accept Dumbledore's offer of amnesty.
Despite his failure, Draco returned to the manor alive, and because his actions had led to Dumbledore's death, though he hadn't killed him himself, Voldemort freed Lucius from Azkaban. Though the Malfoys were united again, their lives did not much improve. They were all but prisoners in their own home, under constant scrutiny, and their status among the Death Eaters was lowered to barely above the Snatchers. Long before he returned to school, now a known Death Eater, he had grown thoroughly disenchanted with the Dark Arts and Voldemort. At Hogwarts in 1997, he was outcast by anti-Death Eaters and Death Eater sympathizers alike-- the first because of his status, and the second because of his failure. His marks were always just passing, though he tried once again to focus on his studies.
After the war, his mother's lie saving his entire family from Azkaban, Draco retreated into solitude, falling into a deep depression. He isolated himself into his room at the manor for months, leaving only to eat or to isolate himself in the manor's library for hours on end. Eventually, he managed to pull himself out of it with the support of his family, though never completely. After those first few months, he threw himself into Potions work and magical research, taking an interest in Alchemy and Spell Creation. Though things would get easier over time, Draco had been forever changed-- for the better, though far more difficult.

TYPES OF MAGIC
While all of Wizardkind possess similar magical abilities, there are three different types of ability. These abilities are often passed down genetically, though individuals may have different types than either of their parents. However, it’s common that a child of two parents with the same type will inherit that type.
The reason for the different types is not fully known in the Wizarding World, but it has roots in the differing ancestry of the earliest wizards (as discussed in my multiverse headcanon). The instructive type comes from Atani ancestry, while the instinctive and constructive types come from elven ancestry. This is part of the reason that instinctive and constructive magic types are much more rare than instructive, as there were far fewer early wizards with elven ancestry.
Each type of magic has its strengths and weaknesses, its advantages and its disadvantages. While no skills (unless they are inborn skills such as being a metamorphmagus or seer) are by default impossible to learn for any type, the different types will have advantages in certain areas and disadvantages in others, though a skilled wizard can overcome their disadvantages.
TYPE ONE: INSTRUCTIVE
The most common type of magic user is an instructive magic user. These wizards excel at using magic with certainty. As long as an instructive magic user uses the correct wand movement and incantation, their spell will most likely go off without a hitch, provided the wand itself doesn’t reject it.
Key Concept: Accuracy
Strengths: Charmwork, Transfiguration, Apparition
Weaknesses: Wandless and Nonverbal magic
Advantages: Accurate casting will almost without fail give the desired result. Relatively unaffected by emotion. Least affected by intent.
Disadvantages: Even slight mistakes in wand movement or incantation can cause spells to fail, though not always.
TYPE TWO: INTUITIVE
Intent is key for an intuitive magic user. Their strengths lie in swift reflexes and an innate connection to magic. Intuitive wizards show the greatest amount of accidental magic as children (and it often continues into adulthood), and are able to control it as well. Intuitive magic users probably use magic the most of all wizards, unconsciously in everyday life. They are most likely to become successful wandless and nonverbal magic users, as most do not even need to learn those abilities; they already have them. However, subjects in which slight variations in intent can cause spells to go awry often prove tricky for intuitive wizards.
Key Concept: Intent
Strengths: Duelling, Wandless and Nonverbal magic, Flying
Weaknesses: Transfiguration, Apparition
Advantages: Natural aptitude for reactive magic. Best at improvising, especially on short notice. Able to bend magic to their will on a whim.
Disadvantages: Most easily affected by their emotions. While intent can make the range of their abilities almost unlimited, distraction can be disastrous. Emotions can occasionally trigger an uncontrolled magical response.
TYPE THREE: CONSTRUCTIVE
The great innovators and spell-creators of wizarding history, ancient and modern, tended to be constructive magic-users. While there are plenty of similarities between these wizards and intuitive ones, constructive wizards are far less spontaneous. Instead of having an innate knowledge of how to use magic, constructive wizards know how to bend it. To use magic effectively, these wizards must combine intent and accuracy equally and control their magic. They are almost a blend between the other two types– while intuitive wizards excel at spontaneity, it’s not always easy to replicate their results. Constructive wizards can create new uses for magic that they can then replicate, either to improve a spell or create an entirely new one.
Key Concept: Control
Strengths: Potions, Transfiguration, Spell Creation
Weaknesses: Duelling, Flying
Advantages: Greatest control of their magic. Very balanced. They aren’t particularly compromised by emotion, but they don’t rely on extreme accuracy either.
Disadvantages: Weakest in terms of spontaneity. Must have a proper balance of accuracy and intent to cast correctly.
