after finishing all the current World Gone Wring pod episodes I must conclude…
yeah yeah I want crossover with HFTH
very different vibes, what with Nikignik being heartbroken for millennia and Malik and Jamie just millennials coping with humor at the end of the world. Both shows are dealing with unexplainable catastrophic world changes and both is pretty gay
Now my brain conjuring crossover scenarios, like Nikignik dramatically re-enacting story of were-pekingese or Jamie and Malik conjuring a plan to put their pod-twins in the dreaming boxes

I understand that there have been talks about an Israeli invasion of Rafah and I understand how absolutely catastrophic that would be for what is potentially the most packed area in the world, but I just want to point out that it feels like everyone is anticipating with fear a potential assault on Rafah whereas attacks and airstrikes are already happening and in fact they never even stopped for over 6 months now.
Keep talking about Rafah and keep talking about Gaza. There are absolutely no "safe zones" in Gaza and there never have been.

I really like the "what does your podcast taste like?" but it has me thinking...
Podcast creators: what's the optimal way to listen to your podcast? Out for a walk on a warm morning? Tucked up in bed with a hot chocolate on a rainy day? Maybe on surround-sound speakers with a bowl of fresh buttered popcorn? Halfway up an old tree?
Something else entirely?

méabh de brún as carpenter is my favorite and most precious fictional pod performance ever. i could never choose just one scene for her because she’s exceptionally incredible. no matter how big or small her part is, she manages to give all of herself in, picks every single word apart, masterfully shifting her intonation. her performance is never momentary, fragmentary. it almost feels intertextual to see her fury being carried out with allusions to shame and desperation and sometimes silent vulnerability. whenever she speaks of her present or future, she never let goes of her past.

It's Black History Month
(Over here in the US of A) So here are some podcasts to check out.
Absolutely no Adventures - a fantasy (un)adventure story that follows Sig, the owner of Signature Eats bakery, as he aggressively avoids becoming embroiled in any daring quests or chosen one shenanigans even though the universe really seems to want him to do just that. This is a story about cutting Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey off at the knees to chill with friends and staying far, far away from the slightest whiff of adventure. And also baking. This is also a story about baking.
Afflicted - Lovecraft Country meets True Blood in this new series from award-winning producers Tonia Ransom and Jen Zink. In season one, a small East Texas town suffers supernatural disasters caused by a demonic book bound in human flesh…and only hoodoo can save the town from its affliction.
Apollyon - In the early 22nd century, the Apollyon virus wiped out 75% of the world’s population, and now most of the world is governed by the International Conglomerate of Research Scientists. Dr. Theo Ramsey is an ICRS research scientist who may have just discovered an effective vaccine for Apollyon, but the stakes to get the vaccine to the public are higher than she ever imagined.
Between Heartbeats - Tan immersive Urban Fantasy about the hurt, the powerful, and their growth within a broken world. We follow Sundiata, a guilt-ridden time manipulator with a knack for unemployment, and Nadia, a moralistic telepath determined not to lose control, as they balance frayed mental health against an unsympathetic police state. But when a malevolent presence rears is head, their neuroses become the least of their problems. Can our heroes make the most of their abilities before the option is taken from them?
Fan Wars: The Empire Claps Back - Two passionate Star Wars fans on opposite sides of the Last Jedi debate argue via Skype after their favorite forum closes down. If you love Star Wars (or call yourself a proud member of any fandom), you’ll love this romantic comedy told via
Harlem Queen - a Black historical fiction audio drama based on the life and times of Black, woman, "gangster" Madame Stephanie St. Clair during the Harlem Renaissance.
His Royal Fakin' Highness - What if Ophelia helped Hamlet get his throne back? This modern day, romantic comedy re-imagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet asks just that. As they stage an engagement in the wake of the king's death, these childhood frenemies must decide between duty and love.
InCo (This one's mine :D) - A Sci-Fi story about a disgruntled information seller, a mysterious space boy, and an android doing her best.
Janus Descending - a limited series, science fiction/horror audio drama podcast, follows the arrival of two xenoarcheologists on a small world orbiting a binary star. But what starts off as an expedition to survey the planet and the remains of a lost alien civilization, turns into a monstrous game of cat and mouse, as the two scientists are left to face the creatures that killed the planet in the first place.
Lady Lucy - Lady Lucy is an audio drama inspired by Shakespeare's "Dark Lady" Sonnets, 127-154. Between running her brothel, fighting the Church, murdering her friends' abusive husbands, and pretending to be a poet, the last thing Lucy needed back in 1586 was a surprise visit from her former flame... Will Shakespeare.
Liars and Leeches - Tonya Wright felt it all after the tragic murders of her sister and brother-in-law in a random act of gun violence. Struggling to travel outside of her home, she now lives constantly on edge about perceived threats that seem to surround her.
Nightlight - Multi-award winning horror podcast featuring creepy stories with full audio production written by Black writers and performed by Black actors. So scary it’ll make you want to leave your night light on.
Null /Void - a science fiction audio drama about a young woman, Piper Lee, whose life is saved by a mysterious voice named Adelaide. Piper soon uncovers a malicious plot by a monopoly of a tech company and must work with her friends and an unusual ally to help foil their deadly plot.
Out of Ashes - (currently remastering season 1) Follow a group of survivors as they navigate the ruins of modern civilization and battle against demons, ghosts, monsters and the looming threat of extinction from an ancient power.
Small Victories - A recently recovered drug addict tries to start her new lease on life, too bad life has it out for her.  This dramatic comedy follows Marisol through the ups and downs of her life.
The Courtship of Mona Mae - In the 1870s, pioneers Mona Mae Christophe and Zekial Montgomery search the American West for Mona Mae's mother, Clara. Mona must recall a past, long forgotten in order to survive, so that she can find her mother, love and create a way of life for herself.
Vega a Sci-Fi Adventure Podcast - In a fantasy futuristic world, Vega Rex is employed by her government to kill off the world's worst criminals. She's never met a criminal she couldn't catch…until now. Join Vega as she journeys through a world of bumbling apprentices, powerful technogods, and her biggest challenge yet. Hosted by Ivuoma Hall.
Witchever Path - is an anthology series where your decisions effect the story. Our stories are based in America’s NorthEast, featuring characters finding themselves in the thick of the unknown while tackling issues like queer identity, gender, race, and spirituality. Stories often focus on the communities not typically seen in stories taking place in New England, and giving voice to the perspectives of those communities while uniting under some universal themes. And the supernatural happens. A lot.

We need to talk about Sending Rocks.
You probably don't understand what that means. That's fine. It's a weird little example I made up, and I'll explain.
I'm the creator of the near-future cyberpunk podcast SINKHOLE. SINKHOLE is weird, short-form, nearly impossible to explain to people, and utterly unmonetizable. It's also got a very healthy listenership for something so esoteric. (I promise season three is coming; life just keeps happening, constantly.)
Because of that, I have a reputation as a weird little indie creator. And if I were to run a crowdfund, I could set up a donation tier that was literally just
"I will go outside, find a rock on the ground, and mail it to you."
and most people would find that funny and charming. I think, at worst, people might find it puzzling, but they'd still opt in out of curiosity.
A lot of you would let me send you rocks.
Now we need to talk about the re: Dracula crowdfund- about the zines. A handful of people got very upset about the perceived lack of quality present in the zines.
That caught me off-guard. To me, a zine should always be kind of janky. You should be able to tell exactly how far down the pile your specific zine was based purely on how committed to hitting the fold lines the person folding it was. Zines are handmade and should feel handmade.
So it seemed like people were complaining about the zines being zines, and I didn't get it.
And then I realized something: it's not about the zines. It's about the fact that they were coming from Tal Minear.
If Tal Minear ran a crowdfund and set up a donation tier that was just
"I will go outside, find a rock on the ground, and mail it to you."
I would give it about a day before someone found a way to turn that specifically into a talking point about how Tal doesn't respect the audio drama community.
Tal Minear cannot send rocks. The zine was never the problem. The way people think about Tal is the problem.
We need to talk about how this community keeps trying to reinvent classism based on nothing but vibes and follower numbers.
I'm going to tell you something you already know but probably don't want to admit: the independent audio drama scene is to the independent film scene what a fish tank in a dentist's office is to the ocean.
The biggest names in this community are just a step up from being nobodies.
If you went outside right now and spoke to the first person you saw on the street, the only non-BBC fiction podcasts you would have any realistic hope of them knowing are Welcome to Night Vale or Archive 81- and the latter only because it got turned into a Netflix show, which means that they might not even realize it was a podcast first. There's also a chance they'll have heard of The Magnus Archives, but it's not a guarantee by any means.
Now, this last one I've mentioned to a few people, and was surprised to get a lot of pushback. There seems to be this thought that no, of course everyone has heard of The Magnus Archives.
No. No, man.
You're doing the Homestuck thing. I hate to hurt you like this, but you're doing that thing people did where they assumed everyone had at least heard of Homestuck.
There are people in your life that have never heard of Homestuck.
The Magnus Archives was a mini-zeitgeist in which the fandom engaged in wild speculating, plentiful shipping, and lots and lots of aligning yourself with a specific Fear.
And it was never as big as Homestuck.
I'm sorry. Jonny Sims is not a household name. That's simply the truth.
He is also in this fish tank with us. As far as I am aware, he has not escaped to begin acting in feature films or begun voicing characters in massive video game franchises. Slay the Princess was pretty cool. It's not exactly fucking Assassin's Creed, though.
He doesn't even have a Wikipedia page.
And notice how my metric for breakout success involved going to other, better-known mediums? That's because a breakout success in this community involves getting a blurb on Buzzfeed or in Cosmo. There is no audio fiction podcasting elite. The idea is hilarious.
Even Markiplier doesn't count, because he's YouTube royalty. He's not famous because of The Edge of Sleep. The same is true of any celebrity. They're visitors. They didn't get their break here.
Tal Minear is not your landlord. They're a slightly bigger fish in the same tank as you that likes to poke around in the muck a bit more than you personally enjoy. And, well, you cannot argue that Tal's position as showrunner of re: Dracula justifies framing them that way.
Because the thing is, I'm not just the creator of SINKHOLE. I'm also the showrunner and head writer of Mayfair Watchers Society as of season two. Showrunning and writing is most of my income these days. Tal and I are very comparable in terms of the material power we wield. This isn't a secret.
And yet, a lot of you would still let me send you rocks.
Now the actually important thing.
We need to talk about how this exact illusion, this fanciful idea that there are real industry goliaths in this fishbowl, has already been used to justify the mistreatment of marginalized people.
When Tonia Ransom brought up the issues she had with how the AnonymousAD tumblr had characterized her crowdfunding campaign, this is the reason why people felt they could dismiss and ignore her. Because yes, she's a black woman speaking out about having been wronged, but she's also a "Big Creator," and therefore it evens out.
It doesn't even out.
A lot of the most successful creators you know in this space still have day jobs. I spent yesterday and today doing inventory at my retail job. I spent hours poring over shitty little badly printed tags and biting back swear words because our owner will not let us close, so there were still customers in the store, actively buying the things we were trying to count.
This Us vs Them shit has got to stop. It's nothing. It's a parody and a sham. If you tried to explain it to your grandmother, she'd give you the exact same reaction as if you had tried to tell her about drama in the Homestuck fandom.
Because it's the same.
And you don't get to use it to justify being shitty to someone who you know perfectly well would deserve your humility and understanding if you weren't pretending they were your boss.
Who can send rocks is not and has never been a reflection of real power or privilege. Deciding someone cannot send rocks is just a convenient excuse to disregard their perspective when it makes you angry or uncomfortable.
At best, it's tilting at windmills. At worst, it is punishing your peers for daring to defend themselves or speak out against injustice while being marginally more successful than you.

No audio fiction podcast has it all;
Produced by and starring POC
Has Aroace/non sam Ace/non sam aro MCs
Has trans MCs(trans man trans woman, nonbinary/gendeequeer idc)
Has little to no romance and focus on platonic or hostile non-romantic relationships
It's sci-fi or fantasy, with horror elements(especially body & cosmic horror)
Not too long (like i can't deal with 100+ 2hr+ episodes lol)
This post is brought to you by my love for the The Silt Verses. Which is damn near perfect for me, such a shame the lack of POC(there's to my knowledge only one MC voiced by a POC yet the fandom overwhelming interprets his character as white while HC a character voiced by a white woman as black :/)

Hello.
Ok, so the latest idea I've had for my blog is to create a page collecting together other resources where folks talk about fiction podcasts!
So if you have a blog or a newsletter where you review fiction podcasts, if you're someone who posts an audio drama/fiction Sunday post/thread on the socials (it doesn't have to be every week!), or if there's some other way that you regularly give audio fiction recommendations, let me know in the tags or send me an ask!

Give Me Away
Premise: A space ship landed with a computer that 10,000 souls trapped inside, with no way out and in alot of pain. An initiative was started to extract said souls and bond them to volunteers. It’s a big responsibility and the org down in Nevada doesn’t accept just anyone. Follows a out-of-his-funk dad Graham.
Gayness: bouncing ball, it appears when you least expect it
System meter: through the ceiling and vaulting into space with a cake on top
Non-binary meter: something shot past, could be it??
.
On a personal note, it’s hard to find positive representation of Dissasociative Identity Disorder. I’ve had my best experiences with watching stuff usually through unintended metaphor like Steven Universe. On occasional, literal like Moon Knight [2022 miniseries] and Set this House In Order by Max Ruff
Oddly enough, I’ve never found a literal (or in this case unintended metaphor) in podcast form. While I did watch it early in my discovery of my system so it was a bit triggering, now that I know myself its waaaaay more fun.
For those who are just now meeting their system, maybe hold off on this? If not, totes check it out!
It can be intense at times, I’m not gonna lie but seeing how Graham interacts with his new headmate, struggling to talk to people while having a parallel conversation in his head, needing to share his headmates words without judgement, etc is just so heartwarming.
I’m desperate for anything remotely representation and this made me feel less alone, I guess. *shrugs*

Posting my second prompt for the Desperado Bang!!! I chose flowers and it ended up being a few sketch pages!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: four pages of sketches of desperado characters. Elio is a man with curly hair and flannel in the first sketch, with a flower crown and a worried expression. In the next sketch, his chest is bare, and he looks off to the side with a slight smile. In the third, he stands in front of a tombstone, a sad expression on his face, with flowers resting on top of the stone. Lastly, he is wearing a jacket and a tank top with a rose on it. Text reads, from an offscreen person, "is that my tank top?", and Elio is responding "maybe." With a slight smile.
Shinji is in the next sketch, with shaved hair and wings behind him, shedding flowers and petals. In the first sketch, he is wearing a hoodie that reads " I fucked a warlock and all I got was this hoodie". He is saying " all right, very funny". Text underneath reads "it was incredibly comfortable though." In the next, he looks mildly pissed off or tired, and is wearing a brightly floral Hawaiian shirt. In thr third sketch, he is slightly hunched and is smiling, ever so slightly uncomfortably, with a flower crown on his head. Lastly, he is in a sketch wearing a jacket with several thought bubbles reading "shit, what flowers are romantic? But not too romantic, idk, argh this is so hard, what would he even like anyway?" Below these bubbles is an arrow pointing to a small sketch of flowers and text reading "he got tulips" in parentheses.
Next is Talia, who is a fat woman with loose natural hair. In the first sketch, she is smiling and wearing a loose dress, and has a flower crown in her hair. In the next sketch, she holds a flowerpot and has her hair tied back from her face with a bandanna, headband, or scarf. She looks content and calm. In the third sketch, her hair is around her face in profile, and she is still showing off a flower crown. In the last sketch, she is absent. This is of a hospital room with a sign reading "Patient: T. Louis" by the door. The room shows a hospital bed, and a table with a card and a flowerpot on it.
Lastly is a sketch page of Samar. Samar is a woman with a braid, and in the first sketch she is shown to have the same tank top with a rose on from earlier. Her braid coils around her shoulders, and she has a small smile on her face that seems almost mischievous. In the second sketch, she has a detailed profile, with flowers and a flower crown in her braid. This is drawn in less of a simple style but is not truly realistic. The last sketch is of Samar gently smiling and handing Elio a bouquet of flowers. While Samar looks calm, Elio is blushing and seems surprised, although pleasantly so. End image ID]

Underated Audio-Dramas
Asking for it
A queer contemporary take of the Goldilocks tale: about love, music and breaking the cycle of abuse. Goldie escapes a chaotic childhood only to go from a partner who starves her of love to a partner who nearly drowns her in it, before learning to be just right on her own.
My two-cents: This audio-drama I believe is a most listen for any queer person, but especially for us sapphics that want and/or have been in a relationship. I think not much is said about how women are able to harm you, I remember that AN in "Nothing Burns as Bright as You" as how as a bisexual woman the author was taught to be wary of men, but never of woman and in her experience woman often hurt her the most. I remember being in a school conference talking about domestic abuse but never did it once touch on same-gender couples.
All of this is to say that as a society we often neglect to take a real look at how abuse in queer relationships look like, how they look especially in sapphic and lesbian relationships. So I am entirely greatfull "Asking For It Does".
I am lucky enough to have never been in any situation that Goldie finds herself in and still I feel that I know her story not in short thanks to the amazing writer.
Also the MUSIC, the music in this podcast is amazing, and it is from a real band, that also exists within the podcast. How awesome is that!
Fanwars: The Empire Claps Back
Two passionate Star Wars fans on opposite sides of the Last Jedi debate argue via Skype after their favorite forum closes down. If you love Star Wars (or call yourself a proud member of any fandom), you’ll love this romantic comedy told via conversations.
My two cents: The trials and tribulations of being a POC in fandom, more importantly in starwars fandom and realizing that, "oh damm right, poc can spill the same dung as yt fans". And amazing if straight rom-com. I'll recommend it to anyone who wants to spend an afternoon laughing. It also futures the ever growing in popularity pair of a black woman with an asian man, whom is just slightly of an asshole.
Average Folks
Join your friendly neighborhood Prophetess Terra, and the dysfunctional Chieftain's family as they navigate life, love and creatures of an unusual sort.
My two-cents: I've binge-listened to the 1st season of this podcast. It has surprisingly great worldbuilding even though the story develops in a relatively small town. Terra is a great protagonist to follow around bu the characters that really stand out for me are the kids of the Chief and their own aspirations/conflicts about the place their family has on society. It is a bit politician/rich/monarch apologist though.
Deep Blue Stars
Dr. Indigo Hale treads upon a mysterious island, inhabited by nothing more than crabs and cranes, where they must find a way to make it past impostor syndrome, the strange and wonderful loneliness, and the secret nature of their life's work: the Star Shell.
My two-cents: This podcast came at the precise moment of my life so I always hold it dear to my heart. I was discovering my gender in my own terms, and as always struggling with my never ending loneliness, so Dr. Indigo Hale's rambles were a soothing salve. I'll never forget that excerpt about how they felt no-human growing up, 'cause yeah, maybe is the queernes, or the neuro-divergency but it hit spot on. If you like stories of people getting stranded on a desert-island and then creating a relationship with a non-human thing/animal to survive, you'll really love this.
