The more I look at Slider, the more I think he and Ice go way back. The protective arm slung around Ice, and his "it's Mr. Iceman to you", make him look almost like a proud big brother; and the way Ice accpets Slider's protectiveness, he's so used to it, it's like the protectiveness has been around for a long, long time. It's easy to imagine a much younger Slider and Ice, well, just Ron and Tom then, in their high school or maybe even middle school years, already inseperable, Ron watching Tom's back.
And Goose said Slider wanted to be a pilot too--maybe he and Ice have been sharing this dream since that tender young age, but he gave that dream up after he saw Ice in air and realized how great Ice was, he couldn't be as good as Ice, but he could still have the best fly as Ice's RIO.
