For project two Second year industrial design students at Victoria University were given the brief to reinterpret a design classic in their own way. For this project Aaryn Buist has chosen to reinterpret the Classic design of the Dreadnaught acoustic guitar.
The guitar shape was developed by the American guitar manufacturer C.F. Martin & co in 1916. The body design, due to lack of sales was retired until the design was revised in 1931 and has since then become the most common body shape for acoustic guitars. The shape is larger than most acoustic guitars and because of that it allows for a much louder and bolder sound accompanied with its exceptional tone that is often sought after amongst live shows for musicians.
The smooth organic curves in the guitars body shape allows for the musician to easily settle the instrument on their leg which ultimately makes it easier to play.
Using Fusion 360 and taking inspiration from the shape of the original form, Aaryn gave the final model a whole new purpose. The final model takes a more organic approach for the entirety of it, with each section inside the model following the bodies overall form. It changes the purpose of the object completely, going from an instrument to a more abstract piece of art that pays homage to the original design.
The colour palette for the form took a more natural approach going along with the original colour of the mahogany wood. Leaving the background for the images dark was intended as it allowed the colours of the form, as well as shadows within to stand out. I sketched each shape within the form separately as to make sure they not only followed the outer form but also remained ever so slightly different from eachother to keep the organic feel of the overall model. The 6 sections within the shell of the model that follow the shape of the body were intended to put an emphasis on the vibrations that echo within the body of a guitar, thus representing the way the sounds of an acoustic guitar are formed
Ultimately the design remains to be seen as an art piece that can not only represent the most popular and influential guitar designs to date, but also as a nice piece of homeware that can make a house feel more like a home.

i want to look into the longevity of the artefact as i think products that last a long time are good, and if possible
guitars would be interesting for me to research as i play guitar and there are many different shape designs of guitars as well as many different ways to make them, eg materials
burls art on youtube could be interesting to look at as he designs guitars out of random objects and posts them on youtube, could be a good example of how they could be made from sustainable resources or to show how you could reuse things that may not usually be sustainable to make art that ends up having a new use from what was originally intended. eg, using a shovel to make a guitar, paper, pencils old pieces of wood.
the account Signal on youtube made a Stratocaster out of cardboard mainly to see if it was possible which is a fun idea in itself but also showed the idea that you can make anything into a guitar which also adds to the idea that art like that is sustainable.
Modustrial maker on youtube made a guitar using epoxy resin and lego pieces which was a fun way to recycle a whole lot of plastic into something with a completely new use.

From my list of artefacts I narrowed down my ideas to these two,
A Les Paul Gibson electric guitar designed by Gibson president Ted McCarty, John Huis and their team, as well as some input from and endorsement by guitarist Les Paul, 1952.
A Fender Stratocaster designed by Leo Fender, Bill Carson, George Fullerton, and Freddie Tavares. 1952-1954.
I’ve chosen these because I like guitars and think that both are classic designs when it comes to guitars.
