"Why is your house the way it is?"

Landlords.

Landlords are why my house is the way it is.

The previous owner turned this house into a rental for 2-3 families at one point and did everything as cheaply and unsafely as possible for maximum capacity.

This house passed multiple inspections because they hid a multitude of plumbing, electrical and structural issues behind fake walls and a fresh sheen of landlord magnolia beige paint and shiny fixtures that looked fine (if a little dated) until you realized they were held up with the wrong type of screws, zero anchors, and gravity-defying hope.

Every time we take down a wall, we never know what we will find. Sometimes it's another wall with a sealed door that's been welded shut. Other times it is mold or asbestos that they sealed up.

But we always know it's going to be some landlord, cheap build, mind-bending fuckery.

When people get a little too gung-ho about-

ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.

The causes of crime dropping are actually more complex than that, and global data, since different countries got lead out of pipes and gasoline at different times, don't support the idea that it was causal as neatly as the US timeline does, but it's probably in there along with better mental health care, better medical care (so a lot of stuff that used to be murders are now assaults), changing norms around hitting children, the invention of air conditioning, and a bunch of other stuff.

But mostly I'm replying because I'm deeply charmed that Space OSHA is abbreviated SPOSHA, implying that "sp" is its own compound letter.

as someone who got 2 concussions this year and inhaled toxic substances at the workplace i can confidently inform you all that all characters in the star wars prequels are absolved of stupidity. they're all dumb as a box of rocks but its not their fault that no one made them wear helmets in wartime. the introduction of SPOSHA (space OSHA) would reduce incidences of darth vader creation by at least one i just know it
