I was initially getting really mad that people were so quick to judge Arthur's "fat" comment to Lucy as a bad thing when context and language use (to me) made it seem clear that it wasn't meant as an insult.
Having read through the tag more, I'm now mad that for so many people, the way that word has been used towards them is so negative and traumatizing that it must be almost impossible to hear it used in a positive way. That really, really sucks.
I shouldn't emphasise being literarily correct over having empathy for actual people and I'm sorry for wasting my energy getting mad about the wrong thing.

“Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.”
— Vincent Van Gogh

For the first week after his attack he was perpetually violent. Then one night, just as the moon rose, he grew quiet, and kept murmuring to himself: "Now I can wait; now I can wait."
...
To-night he will not speak. [...] After a while I left him. The attendant tells me that he was quiet until just before dawn.
...
Three nights has the same thing happened—violent all day then quiet from moonrise to sunrise.
...
We shall to-night play sane wits against mad ones.

I'm laughing because Seward is mad in this first part of his entry at Renfield for treating him (special!!! Educated!!! Medical man of science!!!!) and the basic bitch attendant (a sparrow compared to the majestic eagle who is Seward!!!!) with the same total lack of respect.
Seward. My man. Renfield isn't "more insane" just now because he won't inflate your ego. Get your shit under control and start freaking out because We Know Who literally just moved in next door.

*is* it ignoring red flags when you don't know what you're looking for?
a big part of the horror of reading this part of Dracula for me is seeing characters dealing with a situation in which they 1. have no context to accurately gauge how serious things are and 2. don't have any realistic means to *get* access to the tools they need to do anything but be ultimately helpless about it
all the characters we've met are competent and capable and resourceful-- but until/unless they get the support they need... what can they do? how are they supposed to deal with this situation? which part is a red flag when everything could be a red flag??
(please tag spoilers if you'd like to talk about future stuff!!!)

Dracula: ah, yes. I will escape this ocean vessel and begin my reign of terror upon the unsuspecting peoples of the English Isles. None shall stop me, and all my long-laid plans shall come at last to their dark and bloody fruition--

... Has anyone checked to confirm that renfield is not multiple kittens in a trenchcoat?
“give me a kitten to feed and feED and FEED!!!” sounds like it is a petition ghost-written by a kitten who has its priorities straight
