Social Media & Political Polarity
Has the increased use of social media to interact with political and social movements lead to an increase in political polarity and extremism?  The recent popularity of hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter, #MAGA, #MeToo and #Resist is another sign of how strong a role social media played in recent political and social actions. Has “trolling” become a tool which is used to excite, anger or encourage online interaction?  Is the “safe place” behind our keyboards affecting how far we go in our expression of our personal views on politics and social issues and can it lead us into “trolling?” Is it ethical to use forms of censorship as a way to limit abusive communications on social media?  What can we do to encourage civility in political and social conversations on social media?  Is there a way for us to find a common ground on which to have these civil conversations? Is it possible for us to “back pedal” from where we have come?

Here’s an interesting article which analyzes the increased engagement of political conversations on social media channels and whether it furthers polarization and reinforces a lot of the stereotypes that we have about people whose political views we don't share.
