Our hearts bring back the light As all the world must do May stars fill up our sight With wishes coming true

We pagans celebrate the return of light, but many pagans historically held a vigil and kept fires lit in order to ensure the light returns.  Many of our ancestors feared that without proper ritual, the sun might not return. And… I have definitely been feeling that way lately.

The light that returns, the healing we pray for… it is not something that arrives without effort. I am working to find the light again in my own life, to find hope and courage.  Perhaps this winter I would do well to recall our ancestors’ solstice, rather than our more modern, scientific one.  There was a worry in our ancestors’ solstice: What if this winter,  the light doesn’t return? What if, this time, the darkness never leaves? What if this winter only gets worse and worse?

I am holding vigil. I am seeking community. I am praying to my gods. I am taking purposeful steps to ensure “shadow yields the throne”. I don’t want this darkness to continue to deepen. My heart must work to bring back the light; I cannot wait passively for my life to turn itself around.
