Context? Techno rescued Dream from imprisonment and Dream was awake for almost none of it! This would be their first real interaction.

he sees c!Dream lash out in frustration and instead of blowing up at him he goes 'hey m8 this is actually not the greatest idea you're being destructive' and c!Dream immediately stops instead of escalating further

Dream's hair had gotten long during his stay in the prison.

He hated it, he couldn't wash it so it was constantly matted on his face, obstructing his view, itching his skin. And it was the thing Quackity would use to yank him around.

He would grab his hair and drag him around the cell, sometimes used it as leverage to punch him in the face. He was never merciful.

When Techno gets trapped with him as well he offers to braid it, Dream accepts the offer almost immediately but at the sensation of hands in his hair he trashes around, hits Techno in the face with his elbow and uses his hesitancy to his advantage.

He's straddling him, hands on his neck pressing hard. Techno doesn't move to get him off of himself, he holds Dreams wrists and looks at him, with something that looks as scary as pity- sympathy? Sadness? Understanding.

Dream slowly stops flexing his hands, he's panting, his heart is hammering in his chest and he just knows his eyes look crazy, wide open and twitching.

They don't talk about it.

Days pass and Techno never offers him to braid his hair ever again. Dream feels like there is something heavy in his chest. He hopes Techno doesn't hate him- well it's too late now anyways... Everyone hates him.

Sometime after the offer is back in the air, but this time it's Dream who makes it. He offers to braid Techno's hair and Techno doesn't even hesitate. He let's his hair down, turns his back to Dream and let's himself relax.

Dream combs his hands in Technos soft hair, how is it so soft? After all this time in this hellhole with him Techno's hair are as soft as Dream has always pictured them to be.

He parts his hair three ways and starts laying them on top of each other, making sure that the strands are tightly braided, but not so tight to pull at Techno's scalp.

Dream is so deeply concentrated he almost misses the soft purr coming from his friends chest, he smiles. He's definetly going to use this to tease him.

When he's done Techno turns back to face him, he looks like he'd almost fallen asleep. He looks at him and Dream knows what's he wants to say.

Wordlessly he turns around, gives his back to him. He's shaking but Techno's hands are so gentle. He doesn't relax, he couldn't do it even before Pandora, never let his guard down, especially when turning his back to people.

He doesn't even realize when Techno is done, and Techno gives him time, so they stay like this for a little longer.

The braid stays for long. When Quackity comes to visit, yanks Dream around, hurts Techno and Dream- the braid stays. Hair fell out of it, it looks a lot lopsided but it stays.

When Techno comes back to break him out, when they fight Sam and Bad, swim through lava just to fight some more, the braid stays.

It swishes around in the wind as they ride all the way back to the Artic Commune, it stays.

When Techno kicks him out, Dream doesn't understand. He leaves without making a big fuss, goes to retrieve the Axe of Peace for him.

And he doesn't understand but he let's it be, wven if it hurts, it stings, feels so much like betrayal- it isn't but it feels like it.

Dream doesn't know what to do. When he looks at himself in the mirror, for the first time in a while he doesn't- he can't- He needs to do something about it.

Mostly he can't stand to look at the stupid braid he didn't have the heart to take out.

He grabs the nearest shears in Punzes Bathroom and cuts the entire braid out.

Never again will he let himself to get attached, he tells himself, just like he always does, but this time it feels a lot more truthful than ever.
