How About Now?
"...by the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."
Thomas smiled and pulled Amanda close. His lips lowered to hers.
"STOP!" Maxwell yelled. He ran up and stuck his hand between their faces. "You can't kiss her!"
Amanda started laughing. "Are we really going to follow that tradition?"
"Yes!" He exclaimed. "Just because you decided to get married in California doesn't mean you can ignore Cordonian tradition."
Olivia placed her hands on her hips. "If that's the case, then Amanda shouldn't have participated in this rehearsal at all."
"You're right!" He narrowed his eyes at the couple. "There are so many superstitions you casually ignored." He motioned to the dress she had on. "You should not have worn your house colors tonight! Don't you remember your Cordonian history? Lady Atwood would not have been kidnapped the night before her wedding if she had worn another color." He continued going through the list. "One of your wedding party should have had a weapon." He glanced at Olivia's smirk and nodded. "Well at least that one was upheld. And then--"
"If I apologize, will you get your hand out of my face?" Thomas pushed Maxwell's hand away.
"Sorry! But no kissing until tomorrow night's ceremony! Got it?" Maxwell demanded.
"Max, we can--" Amanda's eyes widened when her normally good natured friend turned into a drill sergeant.
"No. Go sit over there." He pointed to the bride's section of seating.
She stepped out of Thomas's arms and sat down on one of the chairs in the first row. The rest of the rehearsal was practiced with Hana as the stand in bride and Maxwell attempting to make sure tradition was upheld.
"Where are the rings?" He demanded.
"I have them." Amanda pulled them out of her pocket.
"Are you trying to destroy your marriage before it has even begun?! Give me those." He yanked them out of her hand. "Don't you remember what happened to Gabe and Chloe?"
"They split up during the honeymoon, didn't they?" Rashad asked.
Ryan's eyebrows lifted as Maxwell gave him the wedding rings to hold. "That must have been some wedding night."
"I had forgotten all about that." Liam remarked. "Weren't they the ones that said they would make new traditions that would become what all Cordonians recognized at weddings?"
"See!" Maxwell exclaimed. "We were all there at that wedding!"
Olivia rolled her eyes. "Yeah and we all knew the marriage was barely going to last walking up the aisle. No tradition could have saved those two."
"It couldn't have hurt." He added.
Amanda glanced at Thomas and held her hands up in surrender. "Fine. Forgive me Cordonian wedding spirits of old. I got caught up in the excitement. I will behave appropriately from this moment on." Her eyes swam with mirth. "Happy now?"
"I sensed some sarcasm, but it's a good start." Maxwell sat back down. Nadia patted his leg in comiseration.
After a few last minute changes were made, the group went to join some of the guests for a rehearsal dinner on the beach. Thomas slipped his arm around Amanda as they walked to the large white tent set up. He lowered his head to whisper in her ear only to have Maxwell and Nadia wedge between them.
"None of that until tomorrow night." The two warned.
Amanda laughed at the expression on Thomas's face toward their audacity. "I believe we can be trusted to talk to each other."
Nadia shook her head. "Nope. Too much temptation." She linked her arm with Amanda's and led her to the tent ahead of Thomas and Maxwell.
"This is ridiculous." Thomas muttered. "We are both adults that know better than to rely on silly superstitious nonsense to decide whether or not our marriage will last."
"Why tempt fate?" Maxwell argued. He motioned toward where Amanda was talking with Addison and Matt. "Think about it. It had to be fate that allowed you to meet and become close to Kiara's family. If she and Leo had not fallen in love, there would have been no wedding. No invitation to Cordonian court events for you. No meeting Amanda at Olivia's. I think you've forgotten that she and I had broken up shortly before your arrival. If we had not realized that we were not meant to be, then Amanda meeting you would have been unremarkable. Nothing would have come from your flirting. All these events plus others point to fate having a hand in bringing you two together."
Thomas stared at him in disbelief. "I..." He looked over at Amanda and shook his head. "Surely circumstances would have turned out as they have without all that occurring"
"If you believe that, then you do see that you're meant to be. It’s almost as if it is written in the stars." Maxwell chuckled at his frown. "Cheer up. After the wedding vows are exchanged, you can kiss her all you want."
Thomas walked away from him. Fate had nothing to do with it, he thought. There was no such thing as soulmates. Two people have a chance meeting, are attracted to one another, and discover they have certain things in common. They then either fit well together or they don't. Fate couldn't be possible...it couldn't.
"Would you care to sneak away with me for a walk on the beach?" Amanda whispered in his ear as dinner was coming to an end. Taking her hand, he followed her out.
After days spent surrounded by their friends and immersed in wedding plans, they walked contented silence and enjoyed it being just the two of them. She nudged him with her elbow. "This time tomorrow night, we will have just sealed our vows with a kiss."
He wrapped his arms around her. "I can't wait." He pressed his forehead to hers. She smiled and tilted her face up to his
"Can I kiss you?" She asked. "You know, for practice?"
He smiled and lowered his lips to hers, only for Maxwell's words to come rushing back. He let go of her and stepped away.
"Thomas? What's wrong?" She reached out for him and paused when he stepped further back.
"We...we shouldn't break tradition." He avoided looking directly at her. "I think we should let our next kiss be at our wedding."
"You do?" Surprise flooded her tone.
"I do." He grimaced at his words. Not only was he now participating in superstition, he was also talking like a blasted romcom. A cheesy romance writer could have written this scene of the hero refusing a kiss for fear of losing the heroine made especially for him. Absurd barely described it. And yet...why not wait? Couldn't hurt anything.
Amanda let out a frustrated groan and began walking back to the hotel. Thomas caught up with her.
"You're not angry, are you?" He asked.
"No." She replied. "I'm not angry. I think it's sweet that you are honoring tradition." A wry grin appeared on her lips. "I just really wanted to kiss you."
He looked up at the sky and thought fate was a cruel mistress. First he finds someone he is in love with and she not only loves him too, but she also desired him as he did her. Now this stupid tradition was in the way, keeping him from a romantic moment with her. He was about to pull Amanda back in his arms and thought better of it. Temptation would be too great. "I plan on making it up to you tomorrow night."
"I'm afraid that won't be possible." Amanda teased. "You see, this is my last night being single. I'm getting married tomorrow evening. I had hoped to have one last wild night of sheer passion with you."
That last sentence caused him to stumble over his own feet as they walked into the hotel. "Why are you doing this to me?" He muttered as they waited on the elevator.
She cornered him inside once the doors slid shut. He braced himself as she began to toy with the buttons of his shirt. "Because you, Mr. Hunt, will have a lot to make up for." When the doors opened to the floor their rooms were on, their eyes met as the sexual tension quadrupled between them. She cupped his cheek and slowly ran her thumb over his lips. "I look forward to collecting tomorrow night. Pleasant dreams, my love."
He watched her walk away from him without a backward glance. Thomas groaned when she shut her door, silently cursing Maxwell and his Cordonian traditions to perdition. Seems waiting was going to be painful after all.
