The dude from Alestorm is consistently slaying me with his self-aware opinions about and analysis of his own music. I once repeated similar opinions back to an Alestorm fan without saying whom I was quoting and was advised to just kill myself already.
So yeah based on [our Spotify statistics our new album is] a "middling" album. Why is it not higher? That's a complicated question.
I wouldn't blame it on too many 'stupid' songs, cos let's face it this band is being carried by the stupid songs. 3-minute moronic pop-metal bangers about drinking and swearing are consistently our most popular songs, and 'serious' epic songs are often forgotten about in terms of popularity.
Perhaps we made some bad stylistic choices. We all thought Tortuga was gonna be huge. Even the record label thought so too (they even re-signed Rumahoy to their label just because Yarrface was in the song and they thought it'd be easy promo). Unfortunately our fans (or at least the ones on the internet - I'll get to that later) didn't appreciate the "cool" aesthetic. Same goes for Treasure Chest Party Quest - if we'd changed a couple of lyrical references and made the video less "cool", it would have done better.
Maybe we made singles of songs that weren't that spectacular. Fannybaws is probably our least popular video, yet it ticks all the right pirate boxes. It's got a ship and a midget and pirate costumes and all the shit people love. Unfortunately the song probably isn't that good. It gets lots of listens on spotify, but that's because when you're about to release an album you have the option to push songs to playlists (when you're a big band), and they pretty much automatically get listened to. But not many people are saving or liking the song. They're just hearing it and moving on. In hindsight we should have done Zombies ate my Pirate Ship instead - it's proven to be pretty popular despite zero promo, especially since it ticks the box of having "attractive girl from the internet" singing on it.
Finally, there's the issue of the ol' coronavirus. We are mostly a live band. Most of our fans in the real world are casual, don't care that much about authentic pirate costumes, and don't care for long expansive songs about historical themes. They just want dumb songs. Which is what this album is full of. Unfortunately we haven't been able to play this album to those fans yet, which has definitely affected its popularity. Instead we are stuck with the "internet fans" - the horrific people of Facebook, reddit, and YouTube comments sections. People who insist that forgotten thrash songs from our first album are our very best, and who judge music based on the costumes being worn. This album was definitely not written for them :P.
Fear not tho, I've written 90% of the next album already, and it's a lot more "serious" sounding, and all y'all internet fans should love it. [x]
