Wayward Sisters - My thoughts
So, being totally honest, Supernatural’s “Wayward Sisters,” Season 13, episode 10, was okay.
I know, I know everyone seems to love it but I really wanted to really think about what I thought of it and I wanted to sleep on it to see how I felt. Immediately after watch the episode I didn’t feel hyped or excited and now that it’s the next morning, I still don’t feel overly excited about it.
I know that many of the SPNFamily loved it and my opinions won’t take that away but I thought that it was a pretty weak episode, as far as Supernatural episodes go.
Below is my breakdown of what I liked and what I didn’t!
The Good:
The opening song and montage - I loved how Wayward opened up. The song choice was strong and made me feel pretty badass (immediately put it on my workout playlist). I loved seeing the ladies in action and their first appearances and best of all, it seemed to encompass what the show is about, or rather, will be about.
Claire’s first scene - I loved how she came in with the werewolves. For a girl who doesn’t like plans, she kinda had a decent one. It’s reckless to take on three werewolves but the gun in the box was pretty dope. Claire was also pretty badass! Considering she’s been hunting on her own for awhile, she seems pretty experienced.
Claire and Alex’s relationship - I loved how they grew into really being sisters. Their relationship has been established so that helps.
Kim Rhodes’ acting
Katherine Ramdeen’s acting got better
Alex as a nurse - What an awesome job and very convenient for a family with hunters and cops.
Sam and Dean eating lizards - Always a pleasure to seeing the boys. Also, Dean going back for the lizards was hilarious.
Alex and Patience's talks - Their dialogues seemed believable and organic.Patience’s doubts and fears were realistic and I felt pairing her with Alex worked out well since she’s not a full hunter but more of a support class (I think of her as the cleric of a D&D group and Patience, the oracle lol) and that may be just the push to help her come into her own as a psychic.
Donna’s first scene - I love Donna and thought she probably had some of the best lines in the show. I loved her relationship with Jody and the girls. Also love how far she has progressed as a hunter. And Donna brought a flamethrower! Dean would have loved to use it.
Darth Dickwad’s fighting skills were ON POINT. Beautifully done.
Claire realizing that she isn’t invincible - a lesson she definitely needed to be learn.
The make up department’s consistent makeup for Claire’s injured face.
The ambient music while Donna and Jody are going to the boat and while they are in the boat.
Donna and Patience - She seems like she will be a great role model for her and I can see them really clicking later.
Donna’s “Hiya Buddy.”
I loved the ladies shooting up the faceless monsters. And Patience's face when she killed a monster for the first time was great. Clark Backo’s face acting is pretty good.
Alex welcoming Patence to the family.
As always, the chemistry between the Jody and the boys is undeniable.
The Bad:
Claire’s first scene - When the hell did she get so badass.
Jody’s line - “the boys haven’t been heard from in a few days.” Kind of cringey and forced in.
Kathryn Newton’s spotty acting
Kaia’s instant connection with Claire - I don’t believe it. This girl was skittish and distrusting, and I understand for a perfectly good reason. However, she clung to Claire almost automatically and I wished to see a better build up to that. I feel like Kaia’s whole plot was rushed, from the moment she came onto the show.
Yadira Guevara-Prip’s acting - she reminds me of Kristen Stewart’s acting in Twilight and that is not a good thing.
The monsters from the bad place - I’m not a fan of mindless, faceless monsters.
Darth Dickwad kicking Sam and Dean’s asses a little too quick but I guess, for the sake of time, it was cut short.
Where the hell did Kaia’s courage come from?? I’m still not believing that. I really wish Kaia was better developed since she seems to be focal to the plot.
I’m not too concerned over the monsters since the ladies seem to take care of them pretty quickly. So it’s not much of a believable threat.
So I get that Kaia’s been to the Bad Place before and maybe knows the way, but how’d they find the boys so quickly? How did Sam and Dean not see the door before? Or did Darth Dickwad bring them closer to it without realizing it?
Why the hell did they take so long to get through the door? It was right there and all they had to do was touch it?
Kaia’s death pretty much cemented the idea that Darth Dickwad was a Kaia doppelganger. And I don’t really think that we were given enough time to really care about her death. It’s like any death in the first five minutes.
Kathryn’s crying was not very believable.
Claire’s scene with Jody - I don’t understand the pain she is trying to portray. She really didn’t know Kaia and for this to be her driving plot? I don’t think it’s good to start with.
The ending dinner scene with the voice over, was kind of cringe-worthy. Also, not too crazy of where this was leading towards, which seems to be Claire being the focal point of the show. I don’t think she’s a strong enough character to be the main.
The cliffhanger - It was predictable. I don’t think that Yadira is a strong enough actress to be a major villain for the Wayward Sisters. And on top of that, as I said before, we didn’t get to really spend enough time with Kaia to care about her death and now they expect us to care that she is going to be the big bad? It doesn’t carry enough umph to really draw in for the rest of the series.
Final thoughts on the Backdoor Pilot for Wayward Sisters:
I want to see more, if only for them to really get the chance to write and present a better story and build relationships ORGANICALLY. The characters are what’s drawing me in, not the fickle plot they gave me as well as the cliffhanger.
Though I want to see more, this was a weak start and though I tried to keep my expectations realistic, this episode did not meet them in the way I would have liked. I loved what I figured I would love, i.e. Jody and Donna, and I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Alex and I absolutely loved the musical choices made in the episode. But I would have liked a stronger story, better acting from Yadira and Kathryn and a better cliffhanger.
So there was a lot to love but a lot I did not like and that brought the episode down a bit.
