Ember just sits there for what feels like ages thinking of what to say. She's terrified. This was what they wanted, the impossible dream they worked so hard to make real, and yet now being faced with it she could hardly feel happy as much as she wanted too. She made no attempt to stop the tears that were freely flowing down her face. Until she met him she had never cried this much. He changed everything for her, he was the one who never gave up on them beating the odds.and now he'd done it again and didn't even know it. Hearing voices outside she turned to the window seeing her family handing out samples to elements passing by. It never stopped amazing her how many different elements have come together in fire town after the flood. It's another miracle we made real
A young fire girl with mom had started crying when her sugar rock melted. She watched Wade rush in, and use a trick he'd learned with his nephews. He drank a bottle of soap bubbles and began blowing them everywhere, eliciting a smile from the girl and her mother, who thanked him. Embers face softened watching the scene momentarily forgetting the thoughts plaguing her. He'd be a wonderful ashfa, as if she ever really doubted
when she finally rejoins them to help work the store she's very quiet and reserved and Wade of course picks up on it. He asks if she's feeling alright only to be waved off. So he waits to see if she'll approach him about it. Eventually in the evening as they're closing up Cinder leaves gives her space to talk to him if needed. He's about to speak up when suddenly Ember doubles over, breaking the jar she'd been trying to put away.
He rushes over in a panic "Em! oh my falls are you ok?" She was riding a wave of sudden nausea. Feeling scared to speak lest she spew lava in the store she shakes her head only to immediately regret it when shes hit with another wave of vertigo. He picks her up as gently as he can to help her sit down by the register. "are you ok love? was it something you ate or?" She manages to choke it down enough to speak "no nothing like that, ill be ok". His frown didnt alleviate "oh..are you upset because we're leaving tommorow? I know the boat makes you a bit seasick; my mom told me even the memory of being sick can make you feel gross" he added chuckling slightly. It wouldnt be a lie to say she'd miss home but she knew he deserved the truth, even if she didnt feel ready to give it.
If there was any thought her mom might be wrong it was quelled with this sickness she was feeling. She mustered as much courage as she could speaking before she could lose her nerve "wade..I need to tell you something" it was barely a hoarse whisper as she fought back any tears that threatened. His face grew even more concerned as he gently cupped her face in his hands. The coolness of his touch is steadying as she leans into its comfort. A few moments pass and she looks him in the eyes. "You know how my mother can well.." she gestures to her nose. "of course how could I forget, she only brags about it all the time" he chuffed. "It helped us too so I owe that woman's super element power a lot". She smiled lightly, continuing "well this morning after I had what i thought was seasickness-" he interjected "wait is that why the bath was covered in obsidian? I thought it was just a fire thing". he mused before realizing "wait Em, you weren't feeling well and didnt say anything? why?". "well to be honest it was embarrassing" they were getting off track " when she saw me earlier she gave me some….news".
he looked absolutely grim and she realized how bad it must have seemed, so she blurted "theyre ok I promise its nothing like that". He visably relaxed but not fully "so what was it then". Her heart was caught in her throat as she sat still as candle. She was barely handling things skirting around the word with her mother.Once she said it out loud that was it, it was real, they were really having a baby. She put a hand over her mouth as the tears she'd tried to hold back trickled out.
She couldnt stand how vulnerably he looked at her, infinitely gentle and patient. She was making him worry with every passing second, she was sure she seemed ridiculous to anyone else. "Ember, please tell me whats wrong. Im sure itll be ok" putting on an air of his normal wobbly grin. Taking his hands in hers she can barely trust her own voice. “Wade.” She says in a breath of disbelief. “I’m pregnant.”
It is a long moment before he can even respond, shes growing more anxious by the second at they just soak in this new reality. He blinks slowly and deliberately, as if hes trying to figure out if this was a dream. His body quivers even more so than usual and his voice is so quiet when he finally speaks up, its a whisper she barely hears. “What? ” She knew how he felt. The past day had felt like a waking dream, after all, she had told him this was impossible. They both knew this was impossible, or at least they had conceded that it was, both secretly and desperately clinging to what they though was just false hope. Ember was really grateful her mother had convinced the new owners to close early. It might not be her shop but being home felt like the right place to have this moment.
"Its true, my mother knew before I did" she looks down unable to meet his eyes. He murmurs a soft oh under his breath before putting a hand over his mouth. It felt so unreal not a single tear had left him, the man who could cry at the drop of a hat “ Really?” Shes trying to get through this, trying not to cry again lest she be rendered unable to speak again. "yes, you're a dad" she confirmed, voice thick with emotion. She suddenly feels a weight against her as he pulls her close, the weight of it all was hitting him at once with just one word. Just the thought was enough to finally break his floodgates as he sobbed against her shoulder. He does not ask how. He does not care how they broke another barrier between their elements, just as he never questioned the miracle that allowed them to touch in the first place. He tries to gather himself, daring not to even let the wave of what ifs enter his mind. He was desperate to revel in the joy of this moment. he knows he loves her, and he loves their child, and that is all that matters in his world.
A pool of water is forming beneath the counter, and Ember cant help but wonder about his capacity to flood the shop with tears alone. She finds it hard to care, though, not as he presses his face into her chest and feeling the impossibly wide smile of her husband. even as he is wracked with sobs his first thought is making sure shes ok, that she feels loved.
A father. He’ll be a father. As he repeats the word in his mind he feels overwhelming emotion swell within his chest and ache sweetly where it lies. It is a terrifying but wonderful ache. Pulling back he looks at her with such tenderness in his eyes she can hardly stand it. "Em..we did it" he blurts out unexpectedly "are you scared" She releases a breath she didnt know she was holding "yes, are you?" "absolutely terrified" he exclaimed, a smile never falling from his face. "How do you do that?" she said exasperatedly, mimicking their talk in one hot air balloon. "its hard not to smile when Im around you or well..I guess you two" he announces without an ounce of shame, an absolute sap he was but she couldnt say it wasnt appropriate today. He suddenly rushes to pick her up and twirls her in his arms, laughter blooming in both of their chests as he whirls her around the room. It reminds her of their reunion in the hearth, so deliberately gentle and filled with an unbridled joy. "Wade stop Im gonna be sick again!" she cried with no real malice. "Oh gosh Im sorry!" he put her down and she motioned to just curl against his chest. Just for a while, they could abandon the questions, the fear, the uncertainty, and just revel in the stirrings of new life between them.
