7th April 1767 saw the birth in Torphichen of Henry Bell.
Not a well known name to many but Bell would make his name by building the the paddle steamer PS Comet and, in 1812, using it to run Europe’s first commercially viable passenger steamboat service on the River Clyde.
Bell was educated in the local Parish school at Torphichen his family were well known at the time as millwrights, builders and engineers.
After schooling he spent time learning trades as a stonemason, Millwright and Model ship modeler, he was something of a visionary and a jack of all trades, it was another trade, engineering that he ended up excelling.
He became fascinated by the then experimental technology and potential of steam propelled ships. He corresponded with and may have assisted the American steamship pioneer Robert Fulton who, in 1807, introduced a steamboat service in New York. However, Bell failed to persuade the Admiralty to take any interest in his ideas about steam propulsion. While continuing to experiment and speculate, he and his wife moved in 1807 to Helensburgh where they ran an inn and superintended the public baths.
He must have been bored for as well as doing the two jobs in Helensburgh Henry was still tinkering with his steam engines, and he commissioned a Port Glasgow shipbuilder to build a 30-ton wooden paddle steamer with a 3hp engine. He named her Comet after a spectacular comet that had appeared the previous year. In August 1812, after a trial voyage from Port Glasgow to the Broomielaw and then back down to Greenock, during which the boat made 5 knots against a headwind and dramatically cut the usual journey time, Bell inaugurated a regular passenger service between Glasgow, Greenock and Helensburgh. No longer did ferries need to be so dependent upon wind and tide. This was the first commercial steam passenger service in Europe.
Lengthened and improved, the Comet then ran a service to Oban and Fort William via the Crinan Canal, but in 1820 she was shipwrecked off Oban. A successor Comet sank after a collision with considerable loss of life. Bell’s pioneering venture was soon superseded technically and eclipsed by rivals but he had shown the way.
Bell was not a successful businessman and ended his days in poverty, dependent upon a public subscription on his behalf, supported by Thomas Telford among others, and an annual stipend from the trustees of the Clyde Navigation.
He died in aged 62 and is buried in Rhu Kirkyard at Gare Loch, Argyll and Bute, a grand statue of him marks his tomb, there is also an Obolisk monument to Henry Bell on the Clyde at Helensburgh where there is also a JD Wetherspoon bar.

||Jho was left alone with the unfamiliar Automaton that was going to be in charge of instructing him while she was away.||
||The aura of the home was tense and unforgiving. And it only grew worse as the days slowly ticked by.||
||Jho was, by and large, combative and uncooperative. Not abhorrently so, but enough that a legitimate conflict had been created. He wanted nothing to do with Aberrant. He wanted nothing to do with their strange, almost sacrilegious ways.||
||They were so drastically different that it was near impossible for them to see eye to eye. Or at least that was how the Ancient Builder perceived it.||
||Everything that Aberrant did seemed to be a blatant defiance of the very definition of what an Automaton was…||
||They ate for pleasure. It was a waste of resources that were better off given to the hungry commoners who roamed the world outside.||
||They turned away work that was given to them by people in sheer defiance of their purpose as a construction Automaton.||
||They built useless trinkets, wasting resources that could have been much better utilized in the process.||
||They slept whenever the urge crept into them.||
||Everything about them was blatant defiance of the purpose of an Automaton.||
||Everything about them was wrong. Jho absolutely hated that he was expected to treat Aberrant as some sort of a role model.||
||Either Ayala was unaware of how blatantly defiant Aberrant was, or for some reason, their defiance appealed to her. She was a Princess who lived in defiance of her own birthright, after all. He should not have been surprised that she found the construction Automaton’s behavior appealing.||
||But he did not intend to readily conform to this role. He would be defiant by remaining steadfast in his ways.||
||He was a proud Automaton. He was an Ancient Builder; a powerful entity who diligently served the Nobility, old or new.||
||He would not be reduced to the status of a willing waste of space. Not without a fight. Not a physical fight, mind you, as that would ultimately prove useless in its own right. But verbally and mentally, he was under the impression that he could defeat this… Arrogant Youngster.||
||For three days, he remained defiant of Aberrant’s defiance.||
||When told to sleep, he refused. His time was better served looking for something to do so that he could be kept useful. He would clean.||
||When brought outside to sit in the sunlight and do nothing, he instead chose to remain inside and he kept himself occupied by cleaning.||
||When asked to eat, he would instead venture into the kitchen to clean the mess that Aberrant had made by wasting food.||
||Cleaning became his defiance, for whatever reason. Likely because he had no other task that could be so readily and fruitfully embraced. Though the task itself was inevitably made just as pointless as the tasks that Aberrant tried to force upon them.||
||Eventually there was nothing left to clean.||
||Eventually what little purpose Jho had managed to cling to was gone. Literally washed away by his constant and diligent pursuit of virtue.||
||In five days, he had cleaned everything. Top to bottom. The only messes that came were the messes made by Aberrant.||
||And Aberrant took the opportunity to further accent Jho’s uselessness by cleaning up after himself. He denied the elder Automaton the comfort that came from being useful.||
||In doing so, he inevitably established dominance. He won the little fight of endurance that had been pointlessly created.||
||Jho was nothing without a purpose.||
||He was lost if he could not be useful.||
||Whether he liked it or not, he had been thrust into a situation where he had to depend on this sacrilegious, arrogant youngster.||
||By dusk on the fifth day after Ayala had departed, Jho had no option but to submit. Though he did so reluctantly and with what little defiance he had left.||
||Like an old dog that had finally learned to stop fighting the rope tied around their throat, he relented and allowed Aberrant to lead him. But he established all the while that once that rope was gone, so too would be his reluctant obedience.||
||Once more, Jho was called into the kitchen.||
||Once more, Aberrant had prepared an array of food items that were ultimately going to be wasted because they were going to be eaten by an entity that had no need of them.||
||Once more, all of the dirty dishes had already been cleaned to deny Jho the opportunity to defy him.||
||“Eat.” Aberrant simply but firmly commands.||
||The Elder Automaton offers an annoyed huff in response.||
||“Wasteful.” Jho bitterly retorts. He had no desire to be of help wasting these important resources. The food would be better off given to animals than consumed by him. He had no need of it.||
||Aberrant responded with a slight narrow of his gaze, and with a coy tilt of the head. A soft, sort of dominating smile tugged at their face.||
||“Prove it.” He simply replies.||
||This caught Jho by surprise.||
||The youngster reached to pick up a random morsel of food. Something so miniscule that not even a mouse would have been satisfied with it.||
||“Try this. If you have the words to describe it, and they are correct, then I’ll give up. And I won’t eat another scrap of food in your presence.” He commands. In doing so, he gives Jho an offer that they would be foolish to refuse.||
||This was the opportunity to reclaim control and establish that Aberrant’s way of behaving was wrong. He could afford to waste that morsel of food if only for the sake of putting the youngster in their place.||
||Jho opens his mouth to allow Aberrant to deposit the scrap onto their tongue.||
||The taste of the morsel floods his mouth, and his eyes widen.||
||He doesn’t have the words to describe what he’s eaten. While he is aware of the many words that could be used to describe food and its flavors, he does not know the meaning of any of them.||
||And Aberrant clearly knows this. They establish it with the coy grin that spreads across their features.||
||“Bitter? Savory? Sour? Do you even know what I put in your mouth?” Aberrant inquires, speaking to Jho with a sly, almost cocky tone.||
||The elder Automaton can’t even respond. He is genuinely at a loss for words. Completely and utterly incapable of describing what he has in his mouth. Even as he rolls the morsel along his tongue.||
||Another morsel of food is picked up and offered.||
||“One more chance. Try this.” Aberrant commands.||
||Jho doesn’t even hesitate. He swallows what was in his mouth so that he can accept this second scrap of food.||
||His eyes well with bloody tears in response to the unpleasant sensation that spreads across his tongue. Its as though he’s just put fire in his mouth.||
||“It burns!…” He replies, reaching to cover his mouth as he does. As unpleasant as the food is, it is still food. To spit it out would be just as wasteful as the act of eating it.||
||“Spicy.” Aberrant calmly replies.||
||He reaches to collect another morsel. This one takes the form of a pale white paste that is gathered upon the end of their finger.||
||Jho allows them to put this substance into his mouth without even offering a complaint.||
||A new feeling overtakes the burning of his tongue. Something pleasant. Appealing. It relieves him, but whatever taste it is that he’s got in his mouth now, he likes it.||
||If only he could describe it.||
||“Sweet.” Aberrant states, clearly aware of the fact that Jho cannot describe the taste that’s flooded their mouth.|| ||“Sweet. Creamy. Cold.” He adds, using additional words to more directly describe the taste in question.||
||Jho feels a stray tear escape his eye to roll down his cheek.||
||“I could describe the taste of anything on this table. I could pull random people in from the street to eat this, and they would describe the taste the same way.” He states, laying his hand upon the table to idly tap the wood with his finger to accentuate every word he utters.|| ||“We do not require food, Jho. But humans do. Ayala does. She needs to eat. She needs to eat multiple times a day, every day, or she will get weak.” He adds, describing the very plight of humanity that Jho had been aware of from the start.||
||The reason that he never wanted to eat was because the humans needed the food, and he did not.||
||But he doesn’t understand why Aberrant has insisted on subjecting him to this emotional turmoil.||
||“Food is important to people.” The youngster states. They pick up more food as they do so; but this time, it it something greater than a morsel. It is a proper bite of food. One which combines multiple items.|| ||“But the taste of that food is just as important, Jho. Humans do not want to eat something that does not taste pleasant to them.” He explains, holding the bite of food out for the other to accept.||
||Jho accepts it.||
||Whatever he has just eaten, it combines multiple flavors. Multiple tastes. And he can describe none of them.||
||“You want to be useful, yes?” Aberrant inquires abruptly.||
||Jho clenches his jaw and he nods. He nods in an almost submissive manner.||
||He wanted to be useful so badly. He wanted to have purpose again.||
||But he still wasn’t able to grasp what wasting food had to do with being useful.||
||“Then you need to understand the importance of food.” Aberrant states.||
||He reaches to tuck his fingers under one of the many plates of food. Then he pushes that plate to the edge of the table closest to Jho.||
||“We do not need to eat… But we need to understand taste, so that we can provide for the people who rely on us.” He explains.||
||Jho tentatively reaches to pick up the plate of offered food. But he doesn’t make a move to eat it.||
||Aberrant sighs.||
||“Eat. Learn what taste is. Trust me. You’ll be able to help Ayala more if you at least know the taste of the food she likes.” He instructs.||
||Jho narrows his eyes faintly as he cocks his head ever so slightly to the side. He gives the youngster a suspicious look. One that coaxes an amused chuckle out of them.||
||The youngster raises a hand to motion to the various plates.||
||“Everything here is something Ayala likes. Everything here is something that she will eat. I can provide for her if she is hungry.” He explains, a note of confidence in his voice as he does. He then leans forward slightly to narrow his eyes at the elder Automaton.|| ||“Can you?” He then asks.||
||Just like that, he gets his point across.||
||He gets his point across because he has established something that strikes a very sore nerve.||
||Aberrant, for as defiant and sacrilegious as he is, is useful. He has the ability to be of immediate use to Ayala in a way that Jho cannot.||
||For as young and arrogant as they are, the can do something that Jho can currently only dream of achieving. They can serve the Princess.||
||They have purpose.||
||Jho tentatively reaches to retrieve one of the spoons that has been laid upon the table.||
||Though his hand trembles faintly all the while, he scoops some of the food from the plate with that spoon.||
||For a moment he stares at the unknown foodstuff. He doesn’t know what it is. He doesn’t know what it will taste like; not that he could even hope to describe that taste once it was on his tongue.||
||He knows nothing about what he is about to put in his mouth. But he eats it anyways.||
||He cannot describe what it is. Even the texture is beyond his means of description, by virtue of the fact that he knows nothing of mouth-feel.||
||But whatever it is, it is not unpleasant. He might even be willing to say that he liked it.||
||If only he knew what it was…||

The surface is populated by discarded androids dropped down by the ROCOCO, an aristocratic society of individuals atop a massive tower in the wasteland. the surface is divided into two major factions: SIMULACRA & SIMULATION.

SIMULACRA are communal and have a culture based around raving and open sex, celebrating their painful lives in opposition to the DISEASE that prevents them from dying naturally and degrades their bodies more and more through each forced rebirth until they become fully possessed. As their bodies are extensively modded and high maintenance, their experiences of sex and intimacy are much more expansive and not constrained to the idea of penetrative sex and the act of procreation as “true” intimacy.
SIMULATION, by contrast, is growing in influence as they promise “reform” and more “sophisticated” models of living that emulate the ROCOCO atop the tower. They denounce the lifestyles of the SIMULACRA as debased, equating them as the reason they are cursed with the DISEASE.
