when your friends don't invite you to the matching username party :(
Now that we've seen all of John's friends talk at least a little bit, I wanted to deep dive into their usernames, and see what they might be able to tell us about the characters we don't know yet. For sure I've seen some weird usernames in my time on sites like MSN Messenger, but these seem especially weird, and not like words most kids would use.
There's also a weird pattern - all three of John's friends only use words beginning with T and G in their screen names. We have TT, TG and GG, so if they were doing a bit together we'd expect John to be GT, but instead he's EB - not even close. Could this be a sign that he feels disconnected from the friend group, not fully part of things, doubting that they want him around? Is it possible that the other three are all each other's 'real life' friends while John only talks to them online? Did John not want to be GT, or did nobody ever tell him there was a theme? Was he GT before, but then got mad at his friends one day and change it to spite them? Or is there another GT we have yet to meet?
Discussion of all four known chumhandles under the cut - only ~1k words :)
ectoBiologist - As discussed in my in depth John thoughts, the strict definition of this is 'someone who studies outside/external biology', which could relate to a huge variety of very niche fields - but, knowing John, almost certainly refers to the biology of ectoplasm, slime, and ghosts, a field which doesn't exist in reality but which John might consider himself a pioneer of.
As a sidenote, if John was GT, he might go in a different direction with his username. We know from TT that John regularly wears disguises while talking to her / interacting with his dad / just in daily life, and that he's into comedy and pranks (NOT clowns). Reflecting those, I came up with guisecladTrouper as a chumhandle that would fit the modifierTypeofguy pattern, as well as the letters. If anyone has any other GT ideas for John, I'd love to hear them!
turntechGodhead - TurnTech is a Chinese company founded in 2001 that makes scientific and educational software. This probably isn't the reference, but you never know; this kid could be really into science, happen to own a piece of software from this company, and have liked the word. I also think it could be short for 'turntable technology', which can be a few different hobbies - records/DJing, railroads, or sculpture/ceramics/metalwork. DJing fits his vibe but I think it'd be so cool if he was a train guy. 'Turn' relates to shaping or forming as well as changing direction, so he could be someone who develops his own technology.
This also fits really well with 'godhead', which is the true or essential nature of God in several major world religions. So this could be a suggestion of a guy with delusions of grandeur and a massively inflated ego, or, it could be someone who takes on the role of a god himself - some kind of creator. I really think this kid is going to be into invention, metalworking, and engineering. Built his own computer from scratch type of guy. I bet he owns a soldering iron and uses it for fun.
tentacleTherapist - Lots of living things have tentacles, including snails, squid, jellyfish, coral, moss animals, caecilians, the star-nosed mole, some carnivorous plants, Squidward, and mind flayers. Tentacles are generally associated with sea creatures, horror media, or both. Therapist, meanwhile, is a person who helps to heal someone's physical or psychological problems. The words sound really good when said together, but don't have an obvious link.
One idea is that she's someone who either lives near water or owns weird pets - a tank of snails or jellyfish seems reasonable - perhaps caring for or rehabilitating them from the wild. But the idea of her being into cosmic horror creates a fascinating parallel between her username and John's. John is a biologist; he studies, analyzes and understands academically, while TT is a therapist; she rehabilitates and understands emotionally. John works with ghosts and slime, while TT works with aliens and deep sea horror. It's delightful to me that they might have bonded by nerding out over paranormal lore, an interest probably neither of them shares with many people around them.
gardenGnostic - I keep reading this as a shortening of 'common or garden gnostic' as in 'your average, everyday gnostic' which, out of all the four usernames, might be the wildest one for a 13 year old to be. Much like 'godhead', 'gnostic' carries a very strong religious theme, especially with the capital letter - I know it's the syntax, but the words could be this way round for a reason. I'm definitely going to do some background reading on Gnosticism as we get to know this character to see how well it fits.
The first word could also be referencing the Garden of Eden, the original sin and the tree of knowledge; the combination indicating a character with a drive for spiritual knowledge and self-understanding above all else. In a more literal sense, I'm imagining someone who spends a lot of time outdoors and who would think nothing of a few injuries from the Slimer pogo ride in the yard. This chumhandle is also only a few letters away from 'garden gnome', which makes me think of someone who enjoys the ornamental, decorative, and whimsical.
Just as John and TT's usernames are a pair with similar themes, TG and GG's handles also match up. (Sidenote: does this mean these are the pairs of 'best friends'? Feels weird considering TT is the only one of the three who didn't wish John a happy birthday). Both TG and GG have chumhandles strongly related to religion, creation, and origins, with TG representing the mechanical and technical side of things, and GG representing the natural and environmental side.
So, that's our four chums! The most interesting thing to me is how well these pairs of usernames work together, despite John being outside of the letter pattern. Both these things feel very intentional and not like I'm reaching; they definitely mean Something in the themes, but it's too soon to say what. I'm so impatient to see more of these characters and learn anything concrete about them at all.
If you've made it this far, here's a quick poll!

what is UPgamers i only JUST realized that the Pikmin 3 Secret File cutscenes use a different translation than the versions used in Pikmin 3 Deluxe for Olimar's Assignment
and all that because i wanted to grab a screenshot of Olimar mentioning the IT department in the Twilight River cutscene to be like "imagine working in IT for Hocotate Freight", only to make the discovery that line is remake-exclusive . so for future reference, here's a line-by-line comparison for both versions ig. dialogue below will be formatted like this:
AREA
"Wii U" // "Nintendo Switch"
GARDEN OF HOPE
"This is Olimar, captain of the SS Dolphin." // "This is Olimar, Captain of the S.S. Dolphin."
"This is the third time that I've set foot on this planet." // "I've been on this planet twice before already." (note: it's strange that they didn't fix this repeated mistake- this would actually be the fourth time, given that Pikmin 2 has two trips. i guess the miscounting is probably also in the japanese version(s), then.)
"Our company, Hocotate Freight, is up to its eyeballs in debt - courtesy of our beloved president." // "Hocotate Freight is drowning in debt. I'm not saying it's our company president's fault...because this is an official log."
"We've come here in search of treasure to help us repay that debt." // "We're here in search of treasure to pay off that debt."
[Louie cutaway]
"Needless to say, the local wildlife isn't exactly rolling out the red carpet for us…" // "But I know from experience that the local wildlife won't make this job easy."
TROPICAL WILDS
"This is Olimar, captain of the SS Dolphin." // "This is Olimar, captain of the S.S. Dolphin."
"This is my third visit to this planet. Hunting for treasure here never gets old!" // "I've been to this planet twice before already. I never tire of hunting for treasure here!"
"While searching this area, we stumbled across a key of some sort." // "I made an interesting find in this area: some sort of key-like object."
"I wonder if it unlocks a treasure chest?" // "I should hold on to it in case I find a treasure chest."
"Or could it be the key to..." // "Unless it's the key to something else?"
[Louie cutaway]
"…We'd better keep our wits about us." // "I'd better keep my eyes open."
"The crabs here are peckish, and we're on the menu." // "I wouldn't want to get between the crabs of this planet and their prey."
TWILIGHT RIVER
"This is Olimar, captain of the SS Dolphin." // "This is Olimar, captain of the S.S. Dolphin."
"This is my third visit to this planet. Hunting for treasure here never gets old!" // "I've been to this planet twice before already. I never tire of hunting for treasure here!"
"My explorations have taken me far and wide." // "I've travelled far and wide across this planet during my several trips here."
"Somewhere along the way, a number of my notes and memos went missing." // "But I'm only noticing now that several of my notes and log entries have gone missing."
"There must be some sort of bug in my file management software." // "It must be a leak with my file-management routines. I think I heard someone in IT talking about that once."
"Once we get back to Hocotate, I'll try to convince the president to invest in an upgrade…" // "Once I'm back on Hocotate, I'll try to convince the president we need an upgrade."
[Louie cutaway]
"Maybe he can upgrade Louie while he's at it." // "Maybe I can get an upgrade to my partner while I'm at it."
DISTANT TUNDRA
"This is Olimar, captain of the SS Dolphin." // "This is Olimar, captain of the S.S. Dolphin."
"This is my third visit to this planet. Hunting for treasure here never gets old!" // "I've been to this planet twice before already. I never tire of hunting for treasure here!"
"Unfortunately, I'm absolutely freezing, even with my spacesuit on." // "Unfortunately, even my advanced suit can't quite keep out the cold."
"It's doing a terrible job of keeping out the cold." // "I'm not surprised Hocotate Freight cut costs when it came to insulation. Brr!"
"It wouldn't surprise me if the president had plucked our spacesuits out of some budget mail-order catalogue." // "It wouldn't surprise me if everyone got the same standard-issue suit, no matter what kind of assignment they were on."
"Hocotate Freight's new venture has been an utter failure, and our earnings have suffered as a result." // "The company's new venture went down in flames, and it's dragged our yearly earnings down with it."
"Now it looks like we're cutting corners even on basic equipment like spacesuits." // "We don't have the money for decent space suits now. This one isn't even custom fitted."
[Louie cutaway]
"Shocking, to say the least." // "Without any insulation, I wouldn't want to put this suit up against any nasty shocks, either."
"I really should've held on to that Anti-Electrifier…" // "I really should've hung on to that Anti-Electrifier..."
FORMIDABLE OAK
"This is Olimar, captain of the SS Dolphin." // "This is Olimar, captain of the S.S. Dolphin."
"This is my third visit to the planet. Hunting for treasure here never gets old!" // "I've been to this planet twice before already. I never tire of hunting for treasure here!"
"While surveying this area, I came across something gold and shiny." // "Our survey has revealed a massive golden object in this region."
"It's got to be worth a fortune!" // "It'll be worth a fortune to the company!"
"My perpetually mute colleague Louie actually spoke up against coming here, for some reason…" // "My taciturn partner, Louie, didn't want to come here for reasons he refused to explain."
"Speaking of which… I haven't seen him around lately." // "Where did he get to, anyway? Well, it doesn't matter."
"Where's he disappeared to?" // "I'll just get this treasure myself and then it's back to Hocotate."

[ID: A blue and white donation prompt banner that reads: "Can You Chip In? Dear Patron: Please don't scroll past this. The Internet Archive is growing rapidly, and we need your help. As an independent nonprofit, we build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. Instead, we're powered by online donations averaging about $17. We'd be deeply grateful if you'd join the one in a thousand users that support us financially.
We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Access to knowledge is more important than ever—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in." There is a box next to the banner with donation options ranging from $1, $17, and $100, with the last option being a custom amount, and two checkboxes below that say "I will generously add $0.67 to cover fees" and "Make this monthly". End ID]
Hey, Archive of Our Own fans!
Are you looking for more ways to help preserve media? Want to make sure reading is accessible to everyone without ads or restrictions?
Then please, please consider donating to the Internet Archive!
Each year, Archive of Our Own far surpasses their donation goal for their fanfiction hosting archive-- let's see if we can't meet or beat that for the original archive, that preserves media that would otherwise be lost, is an open free and accessible online library, and is an absolutely invaluable resource if you are a fan of literally any old media; so many books are completely out of print for scifi series such as Quantum Leap, Star Trek DS9, Babylon 5, etc, and physical copies are sold for hair-raising prices ($100-$500+), and digital copies available to purchase are extremely few and far between.
Some of the Star Trek books have been digitalized as ebooks by Amazon, but none of the Quantum Leap books exist anywhere online as purchasable ebooks, and the only place you can find them is on ebay (for various price points from reasonable to absolutely hilariously outrageous), but they are not available in any accessible format...
Until the Web Archive digitalized them for their Open Library!
Not all of them are available on the web archive yet-- physical copies are donated to the archive and have to be digitalized there, but many are already available that you would otherwise have to shell out $100 or more to scalpers and resellers on ebay, while the original creators never see a cent of the profit (the books originally sold for $6.99 when they were released)
Not only does the Internet Archive preserve books that are decades out of print, but also documentaries, ancient video games and software, live music, and what most people know: The Wayback Machine! The magical tool that preserves defunct or dead websites (or even just to show original posts or articles before they were edited or deleted) for future reference and preservation !
And the web archive is not just for fandom purposes-- live news broadcasts, radio plays, NASA images, public domain audio books for accessibility, movies, podcasts, traditional art backups, and more!~
Do you have old family videos and photos? You can upload them to the archive!
Do you have a family recipe book from your great grandmother? You can upload it to the archive!
Do you like to craft and make crochet or knitting tutorials or patterns? You can upload them to the archive!
So, if you love to read, and you love media preservation, please consider donating if you are able (This is not only available during a set time, they accept donations year round if you want to wait til payday!) and please reblog to signal boost this!

IN CONVERSATION WITH: HOOKAGE
Tumblr media
In the first edition of our interview series, we have hookage, a music producer/beatmaker born and raised in Francistown and Gaborone. He produces a wide variety of genres. The producer says his exposure to different genres( hip-hop, rap, neo-soul, rnb, deep house, etc.) and cultures nurtured his ability to produce different genres.
He has produced for a variety of artists and musicians locally and internationally, but notably, he’s produced for Kaysotheenigma's “Cherry Bomb,” which won 'Best Female Single' at the YAMAs, as well as three songs off her debut album “Fifth Heaven."
How did you come up with the name Hookage?
So i got the name from the anime series, Naruto but i added a twist to it. In the series, the original word is “hokage” and this is the title given to the leader of the specific village . So i added an extra “o” to honestly avoid copyright infringement issues but the meaning behind the name stands because i view my music and audience as my “village” and it’s my responsibility to take care of them.
How did you get into music production?
It started off as me playing music production games on my tablets as a child around the ages from 9 to 13 because i had always had this deep-rooted interest and passion for music but never really knew how to get into making my own stuff. So in grade 8/form 1, i met someone who taught me how to use Fl Studio and so i started making beats in 2017
We really like your ability to blend different genres into one track, who or what would you say has influenced your style of production?
Honestly, it’s an amalgamation of different producers and artists as i take different things from the individually. For example, i love the way Pharell Williams approaches his beats and certain chord progressions, where with The Alchemist, his ability to chop up samples the way he does or even just finding the samples he does is amazing then artists like Smino or JID, who manipulate their voices to sound a certain way whilst also using their voice as percussive instruments is also insane.
One of our favourite tracks by you is Need U, what's the story behind the track, who's on the vocals?
With that song, the whole thing is honestly a different song that didn’t have any drums on it but just vocals, keys and bass. i can’t even remember the original name of the song but i separated the song into those different layers and added drums of my own. I initially wanted to keep it for myself but i knew i had to at least post it
You've worked with numerous artists across different genres, out of all these collaborations which one would you say is your favourite?
I don’t think i can put a finger on my favorite because we all work together but if i had to choose right now, it would have to be spacerover and lucas chubbs
Which artist would you like to work with that you haven't yet?
There are so many artists i really want to work with atm but for now it would have to be K.alahari without a doubt
Before you performed your set for Backyard Stories, they revealed that you learned how to dj with vinyls from your dad, how was the whole process?
So it’s an interesting story because my dad and his brothers are all former Djs but had their own preferred genres hence why i have the variety of genres between house, hiphop, rnb etc. It was mainly my dad teaching me but the whole process of actually using vinyl was hard but i caught on quickly because i never used digital djing software so i had nothing to reference.
So Botswana was recently introduced to the music collective 'Ascension Pleas' and how it came about but, we'd like to hear from your perspective about how you met the others, your music production process and how being part of the group benefits you as hookage?
So as we explain prior, it really was just coincidence because we didn’t really even have a motive to be at UB apart from rehearsals for Pablo%8’s show that week and we then just decided to work on something. In terms of meeting them, i had already known banzai the longest as we already been working since 2021 but i met Lucas Chubbs and spacerover last year, same with briann bc but that we met at UB was the first time me and BC (briann BC) made music together. For the time being, i usually just give them old beats i didn’t have use for but recently we’ve been working hard with the new beats i’ve been making. I usually make a beat then send it to them to see if they feel it then the decision is made whether to use it or not. Me being apart of the group let’s their audiences become aware of who i am and possibly follow me in my journey and on the other hand, it let’s me share my love for music with like minded people who i can consider my friends and that deep love for music is something you can’t share with anyone
A lot of new generation artists and creative platforms have been emerging in Botswana, which one would you say has stood out the most?
I would firstly say you guys because i’ve seen you guys grow so rapidly but it’s because of your authenticity. Other artists that have really caught my eye are borus, chrysus, emo, mantra, magadi. there are so many more but they’re just a few to name
Favourite producer from Botswana?
it would have to be Simba the Indigo, one of the members of K.alahari
Out of all the songs you produced, which one stands out the most to you?
It would have to be some unreleased, song name titled “Honesty” which will feature on my debut album. It might be my best produced song at the moment
What's next for you, Hookage?
I’ve been quietly working on my debut album which is set to drop next year. This album is what I’ve been working on apart from working with other artists, just slowly piecing it together and it’s going to be a great start for me to establish not only as a music producer but an overall musician.

First Post, and hard lessons.
It's been a long time since I've blogged, I used to have an account with blogger.com (remember that?) back in the early 2000's So trying this out again is interesting, seeing what's different, what's similar.
I wanted to start this blog to record some personal thoughts that I've had over the last few years, so there will be some serious posts, including this one, but I do want to lighten things up inbetween.
I feel like I've written and re-written this a dozen times in my head, but it's time to commit and write something down. for those of you who know me, I want to tell a story and maybe you've heard some bits of it already, for any others who happen along? it's a story of anxiety, depression, burnout, a new path maybe? mostly i write this for my own benefit, to remind myself of where I've been & where I'd like to go, and where i don't want to go back to.
But first, some context. I've been working (full time) in IT for….16 years? I think? (give or take), and I'll be honest - I've had enough, and i want out of IT. I remember a time when computers were "simple" beasts (relatively speaking), the earliest memories of using a computer was my mum's 386 (it was a while ago ok!), she was studying a degree, but we had a number of DOS games installed on it (lots of apogee shareware), over time that computer got upgraded, new CPU, more ram, bigger hard drive, Windows 95! that was new & exciting! I remember somewhere along the way mum teaching me enough dos commands that when we bought a new game I could install it without needing help, she just gave me the discs and sent me on my way.
It was in year 10 in high school that i started scrounging enough parts to start making my own computer (or computers as it would become), my first pc being a 386 and the first thing I did was run games on it & dad had a laugh, it was slow, but it was mine! I worked out how to do all the upgrades myself, and over time ended up moving through windows 3.x, 95, 98. by the time i got to windows 2000 i had a 2nd hand IBM desktop, and I was looking after our home network, i think we'd moved from dial-up to ADSL around that time too.
After high school i got into the local TAFE (college for trade certificates), and got a Cert III in IT
I remember not liking XP when it came out (oh god, what is that default theme?! those colours?!), but I built an amd athlon64 system to run it on, all new parts & it was the fastest thing ever! (well, ok, maybe not ever…but it was mine! and it way faster than anything i had previously) i spent days playing warcraft III on that machine, learning how to compile software, playing with virtual machines, and it around this time i landed a job doing helpdesk at the local university.
Helpdesk work was interesting, but it's pretty soul crushing at times, you learn there are people out there who have no idea how to do the equivalent of "fill the tank with gas & check tire pressure", the uni had debated about having a basic computer literacy course for both staff & students, but it never got off the ground. But i pushed through, worked hard, and got recognized as being a good person to talk to in person or on the phone, often out-performing many peers on the helpdesk. We had people on the helpdesk escalating tickets to me, because i was good at working out the "curly" ones.
at some point I got offered a temporary transfer into server admin for 6 months, they'd seen me do good troubleshooting before sending stuff over to them, and they wanted to give me a chance. That ended up turning into fulltime work, that lasted 10 years. I learned a lot in that time, deploying and managing servers, "hearding cats" to get people to agree when an old application can be turned off or upgraded, working on projects. i'm not going to fill this up with IT acronyms but i did get sent on a lot of microsoft & other vendor training and for a number of mission-critical things became first point of contact. I got to experience oncall (and get paid extra for it), and almost single-handedly dragged the windows server fleet up to modern standards.
But in 2022 i couldn't do it anymore. I'd watched over the past years since microsoft fired it's QA staff in 2014, patches got worse, microsoft's promises of improvement got more frequent, and my team (or me specifically) was often stuck between "deploy patch to fix vulnerability or don't deploy patch since it's broken and will break things we depend on", a position that no IT department should find themselves in, having to choose between security and uptime. I'd worked on projects that were so badly run that I'd experienced depression (and some of the places your mind can take you), and while i never acted on the the thoughts during such times, it was not a place that, mentally, i wanted to return to. I'd seen people in other teams at the uni stonewall projects…for what??? no repercussions, one of them even got a promotion. not to mention that in 2021 our IT director/executive staff decided to overrule state government and tell everyone they had to be back in the office (that went down about as well as you'd expect)
2022 was a bad year, we had multiple bad patches we couldn't install on some of our servers until revisions came out, I had a staff member in another team who refused (again…after 4 years…and raising it with my supervisor) to complete work they'd promised, we had a huuuuge amount of work coming down the pipe, and no extra staff, and at some point in july i just broke down over it all. I could not do it any more. I could not push through. my reserves were empty. I had no more to give. things had gotten too hard, things were too complex, I wasn't running a cute 486 playing an apogee game. I was looking after hundreds of servers and multiple cloud environments. these weren't the basic applications that we knew & hated when i arrived, these things were using complex databases and machine learning, and I was expected to understand it all enough to support it. Sure i was part of a team, but people go on leave, I get the on-call phone, I filled in for my manager on occasion, you have to know enough to be able to diagnose and fix things, and it's so. much. now. Things have moved so fast over the last 10 years, and the reward for being able to tread water, for being able to keep up? not more people to help out, but more work, more new technology to learn, in addition to the old technology. It was suffocating, it wasn't sustainable.
And i was dumb enough to think that changing employers would be sufficient. I moved state, found a new job, it paid more, only to find out that the work was worse. the internal documentation was incomplete and the team didn't want to answer questions. clients running systems that were 20 years old (and not supported)….and were planning an upgrade to a system that was 15 years old….and would still not be supported. And all that anxiety? It came back! with friends!
I found a 2nd job, working in IT / healthcare and it was terrifying. we have laws about how medical data is to be stored & handled and my manager told me "there's no laws about this", turns out he was also a sexist & a bigot too. That was a job that didn't see a need to have compliant IT and guess who's getting blamed when shit hits the fan??….well not me….not anymore. The only reason I was able to stay there as long as I did was that I was working part time for most of it.
I spoke to a number of people in IT over the last 2 years and the common theme is that they're all burned out, they've all been screwed by the pace of change or inability to enact required changes. And maybe that pace has been dictated by management not because anyone needed new things, but simply due to those things being new and shiny, or due to complacency. Maybe in other cases it was driven by consumer demand / consumption, maybe as a society we're destroying good IT staff for our own amusement so we can have the goods & services we want when we want them, on our schedule….I don't think I'm qualified to answer that.
But for all that IT has burned me, there are things about it I miss. I miss those times when computing was simpler, when it was easier to understand, when it was just a hobby. I miss being able to comprehend how things worked, rather than feeling like I was part of some cargo cult. I miss when IT was just a hobby and didn't have to understand laws for businesses around it and ensure compliance. I miss when IT was fun.
whoever said that making your hobby a job would make you happy and "you'd never work a day in your life" was lying. whoever said "just push through" never experienced anxiety / depression / burnout (or at least not in the way I did)
If i had piece of advice? If I can leave a message for myself to look back on? Know your limits, you're only human, don't try and push yourself beyond them & hit the wall. Know where that wall is & that it's ok to tap out if need to & you have the means. It's a lesson I had to learn over the last 2 years.
So what does the future hold? I want to go back to IT as a hobby, I can't see myself doing this as a career anymore. and in 2024 I'm going to study for a Library & Information Services Certificate, it'll be a change of pace / direction & should be a good career change.
If you made it this far, thankyou for reading, it's a serious first post i know. But it's been roiling around my head for a while. I should have some more light hearted things to post later

pitfalls of ai & fictional characters
aka, "we tried a character ai app so you don't have to".
We got hit with COVID for the first time, and we were pretty out of it. Sleeping 12+ hours a day some days, migraines, no energy, hard to hold a logical conversation, couldn't access our desktop and so it was hard for us to type longer conversations. So we'd mess around with phone apps.
One ad we got during a hole.io type game was about "talk to your favorite fictional characters" etc etc. We were curious. So we downloaded the app.
We're a large system that is mostly fictives, some of us who miss people we knew of from "back home". So we figured, okay, we'll see if there are some characters on here of people our fictives knew. There were. We wanted to poke at it a bit just to see how it felt, because we'd never actually interacted with ai stuff before. We decided to give ourselves about an hour to mess with it.
Y'all, don't do this to yourselves.
PROS: Sure, it resulted in a few funny moments. Some of the bots seemed "well written", and "developed" enough to fake a genuine conversation, often to amusing ends when-- for example-- our canonically villain fictives interacted with bots of the source's protagonist.
CONS: Everything else.
The fact of the matter is, ai isn't safe, or ethical. Like that's the sad truth of how it is right now. Could it be done more safely? More ethically? Sure. But it's not. You don't know who is developing the software/apps/etc, how they're training the ai (hint: it's usually via theft), or what they're doing with your data.
Beyond that, even if the bot were somehow created ethically and the app or site was safe, it's often a very hollow experience. You are not talking to a real person, regardless of how realistic it feels. The ai only "remembers" so much. You can't form an in-depth conversation, and any replies you get are just trained bits of code.
And that's just... not a good feeling, in the end.
We can see where the appeal would be for fictionkin or fictives who miss people, but in the end, please please please just talk to fellow fictionkin or fictives. Connect with actual people. Learn to let go of people you knew once. Because for all the amusing moments a bot can provide, which isn't actually all that many, in the end it's a shell. A non-sentient approximation, based (at best) around the idea of a person.
It's soulless. And we realized for ourselves, in the end, two things:
We started feeling addicted to it, almost. We could "talk" to anyone! We could say anything! We could yell, scream, cry, fawn, annoy, and get the immediate gratification of some sort of response that maybe looked and sounded like someone, without the ramifications of actually hurting a real person OR without the possibility of real rejection, but like... that's pointless. There's also no real joy in it. You're talking to nothing. There's no real risk, but there's no real reward, except for the reward your brain convinces you it's getting-- and if you have an addictive personality or attachment issues, that's a scary thing. We're very glad we deleted the app same-day.
It made us feel worse. Seeing what is, more or less, a paper doll of someone we remembered made us miss that person more. Like, of course, you'll never be able to FORCE a real person to respond to you how you "want them to"-- and you shouldn't want to-- but ai conversations are ultimately nothing more than screaming at a non-sentient program and getting a generic, blank-eyed reply that's been "trained" into it. No opportunity to truly connect, learn, grow, heal, get closure, or whatever it is that you're wanting from an actual person. And when that clicks in your brain-- when you log out and log in and the ai has completely forgotten you, when the ai spits out nonsense or circular replies because it can't remember what you were talking about two minutes ago, when you realize that the replies are just based on someone's interpretation of the canon character AT BEST-- it ends up hurting more than it did before.
Real-life people are capricious. Real-life connection can be scary. Sure, ai is emotional and physically "safe" because a bot cannot really lie to you, cheat you, or harm you in a physical way. But besides the ethical concerns and potential data issues, they also can't give you actual friendship, love, conflict resolution, or anything else that you'd get from another flesh and blood person.
So...
In conclusion? Forge meaningful relationships within your community. It's worth the effort, and avoids the several pitfalls of ai-- both the ones commonly discussed, and the ones you might not even think about until you're sitting there feeling empty at the end of the day.

I always hated when professors required we use Unity in college. Like I get that the head of the game design department was an Unreal fanboy and had been ever since the Unreal Tournament 3 Editor was released to the public (seriously, he'd tell us all the time he started the 3D game design courses teaching Unreal Tournament 3 Editor and the Spore creature editor before they started using UDK). And other professors really wanted us to have experience in other gamedev tools, but at the time I'd used GameMaker Studio and UDK/UE4 and I just hated Unity. They'd always have these tools that were missing features, the school updated the software once per semester so we'd get stuck with buggy editions, and engine versions would drop/change functionality so drastically that sometimes tutorials from like 6 months prior would be unusable with the newest version. Don't get me wrong, I get the appeal. Compared to Unreal it's incredibly lightweight, and the shaders aren't baked into the source code so making games for lower build targets is significantly easier. But first you still had to make and publish a game, and I've never quite understood how anyone got that far.
Since graduating, just about everything the Unity corporation has done has been validation for not learning the ins and outs of making a game using the software. I've watched them make partnerships with the military, acquire businesses notorious for distributing spyware, and alter the licensing model on the engine to the point that a tool published by Epic Games is somehow the better deal both financially and ethically. Do you have any idea how hard it is to go lower than Tim Fucking Sweeney? And now they're hoping to charge 20 cents per installation, which they intend to use the Unity Runtime software to track?

Repeating Benefit Framework is a finished, bit by bit video instructional class to help your clan at last figure out the code on what can appear to be hard to find:
Repeating pay!
Track with as Scratch tells the best way to involve our remarkable technique for landing new repeating clients as expected. This is really the fantasy of each and every consultant, organization proprietor, and side-hawker. Since, not at all like the conventional repeating promoting administrations, for example, Website optimization, pay-per-click advertisements, virtual entertainment the board, etc....
Repeating Benefit Framework requires no exceptional abilities. It requires no past information. Also, the main programming required is incorporated. It's a get and-go repeating administration, alongside a total framework for selling and satisfying it. To put it plainly, it's your crowd's quickest way to their first or next repeating client.
That is on the grounds that we sorted out the astonishing mystery to...
"Utilizing A Typical Help
IN AN Extraordinary Manner"
Before we fostered our framework, Repeating Income was known for 3 primary attributes:
1. Dependable, Unsurprising Revenue Source
2. Excessively Muddled to Make due
3. High Likelihood Of Early Undoings
...furthermore, trust us when we say, the trouble in overseeing even a little gathering of Repeating Income Clients, was a significant cerebral pain!
THE Mysterious OF Customary Repeating Income
(Everything They're NOT Saying to You About Repeating Income!)
Indeed, having Repeating Income Clients sounds perfect, however its constantly had a Significant drawback...
Things like observing the work process, keeping in contact with the client, extinguishing fires, going about as a contact among outsourcers and the clients staff, showing up at precise invoicing and considerably more.
Truth be told, it's so requesting and covered with minefields that numerous organizations will just pass on these sorts of game plans... Despite the fact that they perceive the monetary open door!
How would we be aware, how are we so certain?
Since we've had to deal with it ordinarily (as is commonly said, it's not our most memorable rodeo).
We've landed our thought process would be eminent clients with repeating arrangements and...
HAD Everything Self-destruct
IN A Little while!
We just didn't have the foggiest idea or value how much tension we'd be under to deliver prompt outcomes, since the client would be paying consistently...
Tune in, don't be tricked by the 'imagine masters" who carry on like keeping up with repeating income clients is simple or programmed or a cakewalk — it isn't.
What's more, that is the reason the beginners do that dimwitted math that expects a common client stays 12 or two years or three years... or then again considerably longer!
But in the customary plan they Won't ever do. Of course, everything sounds great, however we will not affront your insight that way.
In our long and frequently difficult experience, we've viewed as the best (and perhaps the main method for having) repeating clients STICK for extensive stretches of time, a large number of months and many years...
IS BY Embracing OUR SHARKS Repeating Benefit Framework!
Our Commitment: When you know how to apply this mystery, your business won't ever go back.
THIS PUTS Repeating Income Inside THE Arrive at OF Anybody!
Indeed — THIS STOPS THE Crazy Thrill ride Pay IN Only WEEKS...
Furthermore, Gives YOU THE Unshakable, Consistent Month to month BASE YOU'VE For practically forever Cared about.
We'll uncover in a second the way in which we work just a single time, yet get compensated again and again.
However, BE Ready...
WHAT WE'RE DOING Isn't
WHAT YOU'D Anticipate
We get these common installments WITHOUT the normal deals pressure process. We never force the 'repeating installment' choice on possibilities or attempt to slip it into our arrangements.
Furthermore, we NEVER secure ourselves to long stretches of difficult work, steady client examination, and the insane, unusual rivalry, on the web and disconnected... all in order to keep the repetitive installments coming in...
At the point when you see everything spread out for you, interestingly, you will probably inquire,

How to Choose an Automated Testing Tool for Your Website
If you need to perform software testing for your website, you should consider using an automated testing tool. These tools can perform automated testing and identify errors in every phase of the process, including testing for regression. Manual testing requires extensive human effort and time and may result in unidentified bugs. Moreover, the same test cases are typically repeated, which can result in testers becoming disinterested and reducing the overall efficiency of testing. An automated testing tool can save you time and money by performing software testing on your behalf.
There are many types of automated testing tools available in the market, each with its own features and pricing. It is important to choose the right one for your project and to understand its capabilities before settling on one. Here are some things to keep in mind before choosing a testing tool. A good automated tool should have support, an updated policy, and a free trial. You should also know your testing workflow so that you can optimize its results. Listed below are some factors to consider when selecting an automated testing tool.
Reporting options: Each automated testing tool provides different reports. Many tools create screenshots of errors and stack traces, as well as information about test times. However, only a few can produce video records, allowing you to see how your system behaves during the test. However, video reports consume more resources and may lead to fewer tests. Also, this feature may not be necessary if your website uses APIs. However, if you want to test a specific functionality, video reports may be a great option.

ABOUT US:
When choosing an automated testing tool, consider how specific your tasks are. While some automated tools are better than others, you should never blindly adopt the same method as another team. Think about your needs, your human resources, and your future scalability. For example, an experienced development team may use Selenium or Appium to automate repetitive tasks, while a manual testing team might use Katalon Studio, a low-code framework that can perform repetitive testing without the need for a programmer.
A great automated testing tool will help remove repetitive and expansive manual testing. In addition to saving you time and effort, many tools have community forums where developers can share experiences and ask questions. If you're unsure of which one to buy, we'd recommend trying a free trial version. Avail of our 14-day trial period to see if it's right for your project. You'll be amazed at how quickly and easily you'll see the results of your efforts.
A good automation testing tool can simplify all of these tasks, including test case management, analytics, and collaboration between testers and developers. You should also be able to share test cases between teams and across releases and sprints. In addition, a good automated testing tool should be easy to use and integrate with existing tools. Once installed, you can get started using the automation tool and see how it helps your team. If you're not sure about whether or not it's right for your team, check out these tips for choosing the best one for your needs.

I'm a software engineer! At least that's what my diploma says, I don't really feel like one! 😂 I was required to to attend most workshops so I kinda lied before but in my defense, I completely forgot about them! Lectures were the worst! I tried going to most of my classes for one semester and I was so burned out! My friends and I decided that each of us would go to one class and then we'd exchange notes!
Omg yes! I like your idea more! They get to spend more time together bonding over their little 'project' and in order to make it work without Bakugou noticing, they'd need quite a few stepping stones! Do you think they'd succeed without you or Bakugou realising what they're doing?
-👀
Holy shit that’s cool - I’d love to have the mind for something like that! Part of me does think you never feel like what you’re qualified for tho 🤣 I certainly don’t by any means. That’s a good work around though, sharing the lectures between you!
Bakugo does. 100%, but he hides it - bc there’s two people actively coming up with excuses for him to see you? Why would he get in the way of that. You, on the other hand, I feel like aren’t around them enough as a group to really click to it?

an interesting thing I learned today was that global warming might result in a negative leap second sometime in the future
Tumblr media
(admittedly the earth's rotation is affected by lots of complicated factors so it might not be that clear-cut, but anyway)
so you may be thinking 'but leap seconds are like a single second? so short! who's going to notice?'
well tbf the impact from these leap seconds is going to be most strongly felt by high precision things like GPS or NTP servers whatever (and the poor devs who have to maintain the software lol) but leap seconds have historically caused unexpected problems in financial markets and all sorts of websites and servers as well, so...
in any case, I find all this really fascinating and pls bear with me while I nerd out a bit about this :P
so normally speaking, the Earth's rotation should be gradually slowing, because the pull of tides from the Moon and so on (though there are other influences too, like fluid flow in the outer core, the movement of Earth's crust, etc. so it's all very complicated)
until recently, the length of a day has been about on average 1-2 milliseconds longer than 24 hours (note that there are seasonal variations though).
1-2 milliseconds may not seem like much, but it adds up over time!
in fact, it's the job of the IERS to monitor the difference between UTC (universal coordinated time) and earth's rotation angle (UT1), and decide when to insert a leap second to prevent them from drifting too far apart
the current version of UTC (as defined by the ITU) requires the difference between UTC and UT1 to be no greater than 0.9 seconds. The IERS typically inserts a leap second when the difference grows to 0.6 seconds.
HERE'S A GRAPH
Tumblr media
see, the difference between UTC and Earth's actual rotation angle keeps drifting. UT1 keeps falling behind UTC, so those vertical lines are every time the IERS inserted a leap second, to bring UTC and UT1 back closer together
since UTC is ticking faster than UT1 bc of Earth's rotation slowing, we typically need to insert positive leap seconds for when UTC gets too far ahead
positive leap seconds take the form of an extra time second 23:59:60, which happens at the same instant UTC everywhere around the world
historically, we've needed to insert a leap second every 1-2 years or so
it's not very regular tho, bc the Earth's rotation can vary in unpredictable ways. Even earthquakes and the filling of the three gorges dam had a detectable effect on the Earth's rotation.
but what's this? if you look back up at the graph above, you may notice that the graph seems to flatten out near the end there. Why's this happening?
here's ANOTHER GRAPH (with tiny text sorry)
Tumblr media
the squiggly green line here shows the deviation in length of day relative to a SI day (i.e. 86400 SI seconds). Look for the ±0 ms baseline on the left vertical axis.
in the 1970s Earth's rotation was in the range of 1-2 ms longer than an SI day
but recently the length of a day has been shortening, and in 2020, there were a large number of days where the length of a day was actually slightly less than 86400 SI seconds! (mostly by less than a millisecond, but still)
2020 had 28 of the shortest days on record since 1960, and days in 2021 are predicted to be even shorter (note that the difference is on the order of milliseconds... but stillllll)
this is actually why we haven't seen any leap seconds recently. The previous one was in 2016. In fact this is the first time since 2003 when we will have had a 256 week period without leap seconds
and this in fact might cause some GPS systems to bug out hehe. In the widely used gpsd package, there was a recently reported bug "GPSD time will jump back 1024 weeks at after week=2180 (23-October-2021)". This bug happened bc the code author wrongly assumed that leap seconds would be more frequent :3
and if the Earth continues to speed up like this, the IERS may need to insert a negative leap second at some point in the future, to bring UT1 and UTC back closer together
this would take the form of the UTC clock going from 23:59:57 to 23:59:58 and then skipping directly to 00:00:00.
in the history of UTC there has never been a negative leap second, so needless to say software ppl aren't too excited at the prospect of this happening :3
Tumblr media
so what's causing the earth's spinning to unexpectedly speed up?
there's been some research that suggests changes in the density and circulation of ocean temperature rises might result in a net transfer of mass to higher latitudes. but the predicted time deviation doesn't fully explain the changes we currently see
there's also the idea that ice melt results in water running downhill, resulting in a redistribution of mass closer to its axis of rotation
but at the same time, a redistribution of ocean mass to the equatorial latitudes would result in mass going farther away from Earth's axis of rotation
or maybe it's just Earth's crust and magma and stuff doing weird things again, who knows!
the Earth's rotational axis isn't static either; it can shift, and that might also change the effective rotational inertia
it's probably a complicated combination of a whole bunch of factors
but anyway, why do we even have leap seconds?
well the main motivation for leap seconds was when we switched from solar time to atomic time around the 1950s-ish. So before our clocks became accurate enough to tell the difference, we just said "yo, a second is 1/86400 of the time it takes for the sun to go all the around the sky, by definition" and that's good enough! the length of a day can vary by a few milliseconds from year to year but we wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.
but gradually timekeeping precision requirements grew so eventually in 1967 a second was defined to be "9,192,631,770 periods of the something something something caesium atom" which was way more precise and good for atomic clocks but bad for keeping the clocks in sync with the sun
so the concern was without leap seconds our atomic-clock-based timescale would drift relative the sun and then eventually we'd have solar noon when our clocks said midnight and vice versa
I mean, sure, that probably wouldn't happen for thousands for years, but procrastination is bad, ok?
but still admittedly leap seconds are somewhat controversial and there's plenty of Discourse™ about this, esp. in academic circles and stuff, so if any of you into that kind of thing here's one possible starting point :3
anyway some ppl have made some code to make predictions based on IERS bulletin A, so based on the latest Earth rotation measurements as of 29 July 2021, and whole bunch of (and I quote) "very large, probably unjustified assumptions"...
Tumblr media
expect a negative leap second in the ballpark of June 2029 :3

Small surprises
Steven visited us yesterday and wanted to visit a local winery. Maps showed two in the local area so we thought we'd call to see if they were open. First number was disconnected. The second number was answered with a "Hello". When Sandy asked if she had reached the Potomac Highlands Winery she was told that she had. She asked if they were open and was told "we could be". We'd never had that type of response before but decided to give it a shot. Sandy told the man on the phone we'd be there in an hour or so.
We got into our cars and made our way to Fried Meat Ridge Road. When we spotted vines on the right side of the road we knew we were getting close. A small sign at the top of a driveway told us we were there. We turned into the driveway and were met by Charlie. I'm not sure how old Charlie is since it never seemed like a good time to ask but he shuffled as he led us to his basement.
We entered the basement through a short, dim and narrow passageway. One wall was covered with medals the winery had earned over the years. The other by hats of various styles and materials. Wine boxes were stacked in a seemingly haphazard fashion around the basement. Charlie called upstairs for his wife to bring the Seyval Blanc down when she came. After a short wait Becky made her careful way down some relatively steep stairs.
We tasted five white and four red wines. With the exception of a surprisingly good Chardonnay and a well done Chambourcin the wines weren't remarkable. What was remarkable is everything else that happened.
We learned, in addition to the innovative ways they continue to make wine, that the vines had been planted in 1979. They moved into their house in 1981. Charlie retired from his job as a music professor in 1994 and Becky retired soon after. They have a son who retired from the Navy after twenty years in the Navy band, he currently lives in Annapolis. Becky had knee surgery on one leg and had recently shattered the femur in her other leg. She liked that her physical therapist really pushed her when she needed it.
We had made our purchases and were making our way out when Charlie asked if we'd like to see his cars. When Becky said "they're his babies" how could we refuse? Charlie opened a door to reveal two immaculate MG cars, a red one from the 70's and a white one from the 50's. Becky told me and Steven how they packed the white one for their honeymoon while Sandy took a couple of pictures of a delighted Charlie.
Charlie then asked if we wanted to see his Porsche. Unable to say no to his delight we followed him uphill to a garage. There we saw, sitting next to a Subaru Forester, a covered Porsche 944 from the 80's. It was an immaculate car with a six speed manual transmission. Charlie told us that he still drives it and loves to go fast. "I may move slowly but still like to drive fast" he told us.
Charlie then said the he "could play the trumpet for you". We followed him to another outbuilding that doubles as a music studio and wine processing operation. We were shown all of the instruments he can play and the scores he's worked (and is working) on. We discussed the relative merits of different composing software and how he and his son collaborate over a long distance. Charlie then played a snippet of Amazing Grace for us
He then asked if we'd like to see the vines. We said "of course!" and followed him outside to see his vines. He told us about taking leaves off so the grapes get exposed to the right amount of sun as well as how and why suckers get removed. He told us that he used to get 12,000 pounds of grapes from his four acres under cultivation and that he now gets 6,000 pounds due to the age of the vines.
As we made our way to our cars Charlie also showed us his tractors, explained how they work and told us that he still does all the tractor work.
As we got into our cars Charlie shook our hands and wished us well. He specifically wished Steven good luck in his job.
Though I've written this like information only flowed one way that wasn't the case. Charlie and Becky showed a genuine interest in the stories we had and seemed like they really cherished the visit. Charlie wishing Steven good luck really drove that home for me
So we didn't just taste some wine and visit a vineyard. We got invited into a couple's long-time home as guests. We got to see how people continue to do the things they love with grace as it gets more difficult. We got to see how important human interaction really is. As a bonus we got to buy some wine.
If you ever find yourself on Fried Meat Ridge Road stop to visit the Potomac Highlands Winery (make sure you call first). It's hard to decide who'll cherish the visit more, you or Charlie and Becky.
