Emma’s Diary
Early Spring, 192–
Dear Diary,
Little Ken has been growing fast. It seems like yesterday that he was just a baby, but now he’s already walking and dancing around all day long. He particularly likes it when our mother is playing the piano, to which he has starting singing along these days. Granted, to me it sounds like any other baby noises but Mum and Dad love it, so it can’t be too bad.
I wish time wasn’t moving so fast. Although I seem to be the only one that’s bothered by this. Everyone else can’t seem to wait for things to move on from where they are now. I wish I could say the same.

The Vampire Chronicles Facebook Interview **Recap**(5/4/17)
The Television Show
Production
As many know now, they will be working with Paramount Television and Anonymous Content
They want to stay fully engaged with fans in the production process
No set broadcaster, all options open (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) (Chris joked about it being on Facebook)
Next announcement will be when that network is decided
No timeline for production. They have no idea how long it will take. Script-writing is next. Chris is the one who will be script-writing, Anne will review
Chris: “She finished writing season 1 when she wrote the books!”
Pilot is done. Next are more episodes. They are starting the process and having several meetings with Paramount and Anonymous Content
Anne SWEARS the series will be 100% loyal to the books. (They named GoT as an example of doing this though soooooo)
Anne said compromises are inevitable but artistic control comes from good will and respect; you make it work by picking people you admire and trust. They worked with Paramount and Anonymous Content since they all agreed on a common vision and the end result of the series
No idea about locations of sets and whatnot
Don’t know if they will keep with the 80’s period of the books, however Anne wants to do Lestat’s pre-vampire period period-accurate
Neil Jordan may end up helping out on the project
Casting
Still taking suggestions from fans and looking fancasts up on imdb
Anne: “Lestat is always shaking his fists to those who would break him down…Scrappish impish…lovable hero” Chris: “--and he’s hot!! :D He’s gonna be hot. #LestatIsHot”
Chris and Anne might want to cameo in the series (joked about making a game out of it)
Some characters may change where “ethnicity is flexible”
Anne and Chris agree that POC being casted are important and will be considered in casting. The Millennial vamps (older gang) will most likely be largely POC.
Anne says she has taken notice of black fans showing their admiration of Aaliyah playing Akasha.
Anne gave a story about meeting an Akasha cosplayer who mentioned that she and her friends feel left out of high fantasy for being black and how Anne was moved by this.
Anne: “Akasha isn’t written as black or a person of color…she’s middle eastern” Me: ??? (Those aren’t...mutually exclusive???) Anne: “--but she could be a person of color.”
Marius was played by a black man in the musical and Anne thought he did a great job. Marius can be any ethnicity so long as he’s half Roman. She’d prefer to have Marius as blue eyes and blonde haired like Lestat but it’s “not imperative for him”.
Anne: “Louis at least has to be beautiful”
Armand has to look as described as well.
Anne wanted Cher to play Gabrielle.
Anne and Chris to be inclusive, but will always focus more on how fine the actor is. Talent is needed to get the role, not just looks.
Armand will be casted as someone who looks 17, but will be technically older. Not sure about age for Lestat and Louis (Anne is thinking early 30s)
Physical and emotional aging will be put into consideration (she gave Marius as an example as him looking like he’s in his 40s but being mentally older)
Plot and Episodes
They will tell the story chronologically in Lestat’s eyes so wolves-paris-so on. Basically, how knowledge unfolds for Lestat is how it will unfold for audience THIS MAY CHANGE depending on when they talk to producers, however this is not what they want in terms of how the events should happen.
Don’t want to cheat on Lestat’s life and skip out any details of it (go figure)
Stay faithful to the books and to Lestat’s story
Chris warns for us to be mindful of news that doesn’t come from official page
Lestat and Gabbi’s journey to be expanded
Origin stories of Marius and other older vampires will be shown and expanded on (done through the flashback stories Marius gives)
Blood and Gold will be involved but they won’t DO the story (so using that material for possible spin offs)
A lot about the Talamasca and especially David. Jesse too, but mostly David
(Anne: He’s close friends with Lestat in TOTBT Me: Is that what you call it? lmao)
TVL could be 2-3 seasons. IWTV may be one. Depends
Anne and Chris want to know what goes wrong in the translation from book to media in other series so they can avoid it
They’re keeping eroticism the same as in the books.
Lestat turning Gabrielle will be a big scene, as they feel this is when the series starts to truly bring the vampire world into view and Lestat really starts becoming a vampire. This scene is significant in asking the audience what they would do in that instance. Lestat turning will also be significant.
Characters and Character Relations
SOMEONE FUCKING MENTIONED LOUSTAT AS THE LOUIS / LESTAT SHIP NAME AND THEY BOTH LOST IT (which one of you was it? Hm?)
There will be a lot about Louis and Lestat’s relationship in the series (and Lestat and Nicki)
Anne says she understands how important queer relationships are and how they have driven the series
*On expanding on other characters* Chris: ...human characters like Jesse or Daniel Mollo- Anne: OR LESTAT WHEN HE’S HUMAN Me: :/
Anne doesn’t feel a need to make new characters.
More info on Théâtre des Vampires and the characters in that part will expanded as well
Chris and Anne openly acknowledge Lestat as bisexual and this will be depicted clearly within the show
On the topic of Armand, what that character means to Anne will shine, so he will gain a more sympathetic role outside of just the IWTV perspective. Both his dark side and his more childish, light-side will be shown
Jim Morrison of The Doors was Anne’s inspiration for Lestat’s singing voice and for the band (I forget but I think this was the song Anne named as being a good example. Though, I’m partial to their sexy song “5 to 1″). She describes Lestat’s voice as somewhere between a “barratone and tenor...Melodic”. (Something about Jon Bon Jovi also a little bit)
Mayfair Witches
Rights of Mayfair Witches not available to them (?) and thus, the crossover books are not a part of the VC TV series and, thus no show for them right now
Maybe Mayfair TV series in future. Anne doesn’t want them to play second fiddle to the vampires
Anne and Chris
They talked about the recent April Fool’s Joke. Anne apologized to Justin Beiber?? Why?? I don’t know (they weren’t behind the joke article)
Chris likes Riverdale (ew)
Chris worked with Anne on Ramses the Damned.
Someone in the VC Discord Server brought up the question of if Chris could/would carry out the VC books after Anne. Based off this interview, I think it’s very likely depending on how well the VC TV series goes. He seemed a little apprehensive about it, but he’s worked with his mother on writing and is familiar enough with her characters to care about them. I think it’s possible
Chris went to the VC balls in New Orleans as a kid
Chris’ A Density of Souls may get a chance to be a film. Chris is in discussion with someone about it (?? that’s what I got from the interview anyways)
*After Anne leaves to get Chris a Coke* Chris *to the camera*: She won’t let me out of the house. She won’t let me leave!! Me: Same
The Facebook Page and Other Information
Anne, yet again, made a little speech about how nerds mean a lot to Hollywood nowadays
“Readers know things about the novels that are valuable”
They have a record of fan comments that Anne reads every so often
They mentioned some of the fights going on in the FB thread
(Chris: There are some people with...strong casting choices. Anne: I got into fights with people lmao)
Anne prefers if you message her over the page rather than through emails
They cannot do much about given resumes and asking about jobs related to production. There will be a time for that later
Anne is in contract for two more VC novels. It sounded like her next novel is also included in the TV series’ contract, but I could have misinterpreted.
Anne asks about any regrets or things she would change from the books as she goes into the series. More fleshing out but that’s about it
Disappointing the fans is their biggest concern and worry

While the U.S. Women’s Open finished strong, the women’s Major at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey was nonetheless colored by the dubious benefit of being attended by course owner Donald Trump. The positives: South Korea’s Sung Hyun Park won the event two strokes ahead of amateur sensation Hye-Jin Choi, and Trump became the first-ever sitting U.S. president to attend the national women’s open event. The negatives: After multiple protests throughout the weekend, security detail distractions, and a record media pool seemingly more interested in the President’s disregard of women’s rights than the golf, the overall experience likely gave pause to organizers of the 2019 Scottish Open – which the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen is thought to be a shoe-in to host – and the R&A, organizers of the Open Championship, this week at Royal Birkdale and likely at the Trump-owned Turnberry in 2022. The Open Championship, whose 2017 purse will reach a record $10.25 million ($1.845 million for the champion), will likely return to St. Andrews in 2021 for its 150th anniversary. Even though it’s highly unlikely that Trump will still be President in 2022, the negatives of the Trump association far outweigh the positives of keeping to the Open’s storied rotation.
NFL training camps welcome rookies starting this week, and football watchers get their best-guess annual peek into the guts of NFL finances, courtesy of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers, the NFL’s only publicly-held team (thus required to report financials), posted record revenue of $441.4 million, up 8%. That was driven by growth in national TV money. Local revenue also rose 6.1% to $197.4 million, due in part to strong sponsorship and digital revenue growth. According to SportsBusiness Journal, $27.1 million of reported income is from the anticipated relocation fees of the Rams’ and Chargers’ move to L.A., as well as the Raiders, who plan to be in Las Vegas by 2020. The total amount of relocation fees paid by the three teams comes to more than $1.5 billion. The $27.1 million figure is the real-time value of the future fees, which will not begin to be actually paid for three years. Bloomberg News also noted the NFL distributed a record $7.8 billion to its 32 teams in 2016, a jump of almost 10% that "reflects the league’s increasingly rich TV deals." The NFL continues to be sports’ gold standard: as other leagues’ TV deals erode, the NFL’s only get stronger.
For the first time in company history, ticket sales site StubHub has all 30 MLB clubs signed with it. According to SportsBusiness Journal, StubHub most recently reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox for the club to “opt back into the ticket resale marketplace’s league-level partnership with MLBAM.” The Red Sox were not included in the deal before because they elected to opt out and “create Red Sox Replay in partnership with MLBAM.” Now that the team is on board, the two ticket resale offerings will exist simultaneously for the Red Sox. Reaching an agreement took a great deal of compromise on both sides, but StubHub executives are excited about having all MLB teams signed. “We were both willing and eager to do what’s right for the fans, to give them choice, and that’s our focus right now,” said StubHub North America GM Perkins Miller. MLBAM and StubHub are currently in talks regarding an extension of the five-year partnership expiring after this season. In the end, the goal for any sports team/ticket vendor partnership should be to make it as easy as possible for season ticket holders to resell the games they can’t attend.
While the fight is still weeks away, the hype for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Connor McGregor boxing match is gaining momentum. According to the L.A. Times, the first press conference between the two fighters drew 11,000 fan to Staples Center. This was the first press conference of four planned before the August 26th fight in Las Vegas. Mayweather came off as “mellowed” compared to how he used to act when he was younger, trash talking all of his opponents. “We’re going to sell a lot of tickets. He’s interesting. I’m interesting,” said Mayweather. Press conference tickets were being sold for $40 in front of the arena, while they were free online. “It is unprecedented to think you could get that kind of turnout for an event that would normally take place in a room with a couple of hundred (media) people,” noted Showtime Sports Executive VP and GM Stephen Espinoza. “We could have done the same thing in a half dozen more cities.” Apparently, the search for new revenue in sports now extends to charging fans to attend press conferences. If you promote it, they will come.
In what is set to be one of the “biggest projects in the facility’s history,” Richmond’s NASCAR venue is planning to receive a major facelift. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the venue will spend $30 million to “improve the fan experience with a modernized infield.” Specifics include a new viewing area for fans to watch the teams work on their cars in the garages and then another viewing area designated for post-race inspections. The renovation will be completely funded with private money, and incite some excitement that will hopefully start filling the stands back up after over 10 years of declining attendance numbers. The entire renovation process is expected to be finished in time for the track’s Monster Energy NASCAR race in fall 2018. On top of these improvements, the venue’s name will be shortened from “Richmond International Raceway” to just “Richmond Raceway.” From Daytona to Phoenix to Richmond, International Speedway Corp., owner of NASCAR’s premier facilities, has literally been paving the way to racing’s future.
Tottenham Hotspur has now become the most recent European soccer club trying to expand its Asian footprint after signing a deal with Fox Sports Asia. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the English Premier League side inked a two-year broadcast partnership with the network to broadcast its weekly highlights program, “Spurs TV,” on channels “Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2, Fox Sports 3 and the Fox Sports digital network” in multiple Asian countries. The countries that will receive the highlights are Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laso, Macau, Mongolia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The deal will televise a three-hour block of Spurs-exclusive content, which will be a mixture of competitions across all leagues and tournaments, such as the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and English Football League Cup. This move by Tottenham follows a similar move by Manchester United to start streaming team content across Asia.
Under Armour is in talks with New York Yankees rookie and Home Run Derby winner Aaron Judge to reach a long-term contract extension halfway through the outfielder’s breakout season. According to the Baltimore Sun, Judge was signed with the Baltimore-based sportswear firm back in 2014 when he was still playing in the minors. In addition to locking Judge into a long-term deal, Under Armour plans on re-signing Los Angeles Dodgers 21-year-old Cody Bellinger after his current deal ends next year. The All-Star duo “immediately popped on (Under Armour’s) radar because of the markets” they are competing in – Los Angeles for Bellinger and New York City for Judge. Under Armour has done an excellent job of nabbing budding stars before they break out big, only to re-sign them to a well-deserved mega extension. Examples of this include Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, pro golfer Jordan Spieth, and prima ballerina Misty Copeland.
The San Francisco 49ers owe Santa Clara over $2 million after being audited. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the city-order audit revealed costs owes to the city from the past three years; the team “sharply disputes” these findings. Levi’s Stadium is only a few years old, so the team owes nearly seven figures worth of public safety costs that stemmed from construction. Approximately $894,000 of the construction fund was used during the opening year for public safety-related costs, yet that number was not “included in the budget approved by the city-run Stadium Authority.” On top of that is another $719,000 that the team owes the city to cover “revenue that the city lost by allowing the 49ers to park cars on a city-owned golf course during games and other events.” The most controversial figure is $488,000 worth of expenses for which the city forgot to bill the 49ers at all. You’d think in the heart of Silicon Valley, someone in the city would have an up to date version of QuickBooks or other accounting software. Apparently not.
The International Olympic Committee has begun to ramp up its talks with Los Angeles and Paris after its decision to simultaneously award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two cities. A decision as to which city will host which Games will not be announced until September, but negotiations have started because each city is certain that it will land one of the two Olympics. With Los Angeles guaranteed to host an Olympics, the year the city is awarded will mark the first Summer Games in the United States since 1996. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo both met with IOC President Thomas Bach in Lausanne, Switzerland, to pitch their respective bids. The three parties – L.A., Paris, and the IOC – will have to negotiate which city will host the first Games and which the latter. Garcetti noted that he prefers the 2024 Olympics, but he will accept either.
The Milwaukee Bucks are looking to capitalize on ticket sales with their new facility opening for the 2018-2019 season. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Bucks set a goal of reaching 10,000 full season-ticket sales, with another 16,000 full-season equivalents to complement those. The move to release ticket sales a year and a half in advance of the facility opening for action will hopefully get potential season ticket buyers eager and excited for the state-of-the-art arena. This coming season, the Bucks’ current home, the BMO Harris Bradley Center, is expected to start with about 7,100 full season-tickets, “with full season equivalents of about 9,000.” But with that lofty goal also comes price hikes that have startled some fans. One season-ticket holding group has “two seats in section 209 in the Bradley Center, a lower level corner, at $1,696 each.” The “same seat at the new arena is $2,757, a 63% increase.” The team hopes fans will be willing to pay more for such a nice facility – especially in a market with scant winter consumer competition.
Everyone likes pizza, but not everyone in Detroit likes a 243-foot “Little Caesar” eating pizza on the roof of the new downtown arena. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Red Wings’ and Pistons’ new arena, Little Caesars Arena, is in the process of getting its full roof painting, which will result in the “largest Little Caesar in the world.” Photographs of the painting were initially posted on Twitter to draw some excitement about the facility coming to fruition, but fans echoed their displeasure “with the rooftop pizza ad and noted how earlier design concept renderings for the arena,” which were released back in 2014, are preferred. Olympia Development had originally released images of a glistening arena with a red-colored, night-lit roof featuring the Red Wings logo. At the time of that photo release, the Detroit-based pizza chain had not yet signed on as the naming rights partner of the facility. Perhaps this is a case of too much promotional sauce overwhelming the dough?
The English Premier League truly is in a league above the rest. According to the Guardian, Deloitte’s annual review of international soccer finances has found the EPL earned “€2B more collectively than those in Europe's second-richest league, the Bundesliga, in 2015-2016.” On top of earning collectively more than teams in any other league, total earning for EPL clubs are expected to continue to grow going forward thanks to lucrative TV deals. This past season marked the first year in the league’s new TV contract, which is set to run from 2016-2019. The size and scope of the league's domestic and international TV rights sales, $3.2 billion per season, $9.6 billion in total over three years, “is approximately double that of the Bundesliga’s own improved deals, which are expected to pay around $1.6 billion annually to the clubs in Germany's top two divisions.” While this past season’s financials have not yet been published by Deloitte, ancillary data indicate they continue to soar.
In its first few years of existence, the College Football Playoff has been considered a massive success, causing cities to fight for the right to host the semifinals and championship game. According to the Baton Rouge Advocate, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock confirmed that his organization will host future sites for the playoff in early 2018 while also noting that the field of four teams will not be expanded. This coming year will be the fourth year under the current format; Hancock “reminded everyone there is a 12-year contract in place for a four-team playoff.” In terms of future sites, Hancock stressed the importance of diversifying the geographic location of playoff sites. Hancock, speaking at SEC media days in Hoover, Alabama, noted that the first six CFP title games “will have been played in six different states.” While trying to avoid lobbying for a particular region or city, Hancock said “bringing the game to other parts of the country is a priority.” In this instance, spreading the wealth is key – even if it means locating the CFP Championship Game in a regional highly unlikely to host a championship contender.
In their first season with MLS, Atlanta United FC is leading the league in attendance. According to the AP, Atlanta United averaged 46,482 fans through eight homes games through mid-July. That marker is just under 4,000 better than the second-ranking club, the Seattle Sounders, who sit at 42,628. These two clubs are in a category above the rest of MLS, with the third-place club, Toronto FC, averaging 26,765 fans per game. Atlanta United has played its inaugural season’s home games at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium while Mercedes-Benz Stadium is still being built. President Darren Eales has already said that the team has discussed opening Mercedes-Benz Stadium up to its 75,000 capacity for “select games if the demand is there.” The number of seats that will be available next year at Mercedes-Benz Stadium has not yet been confirmed, but the upper deck will initially not be open for seating. Sound strategy: start smaller, then expand. In MLS and elsewhereOne of the largest owners and operators of private golf and country clubs in the U.S. has been sold to a private equity firm for $1.1 billion. Apollo Global announced that they have acquired Dallas-based ClubCorp and their 200+ golf courses, which include gems like Mission Hills and Firestone Country Club, ending its search for an investor amid slowing membership growth and losses. The deal comes three months after ClubCorp announced the retirement of CEO Eric Affeldt and said it had decided not to pursue a “strategic transaction,” after efforts to explore a sale did not result in any offer for the entire company. However, the Dallas-based company had kept its strategic review committee in place, and had yet to announce Affeldt’s successor. It has struggled to turn a profit, as its strategy of boosting its golf club memberships through promotions, refurbishments, and acquisitions has proved costly. The sale to Apollo is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2017. From media properties to hard goods and property concerns, consolidation is the byword of golf in this era, as indeed, it is in almost all sports.
