Thunder cracked violently in the night, lightning struck the wet earth alongside the angry pellets of rain and the crackle of burning trees was near silent under the assault. Sybil's dress dragged in the mud, torn by branches and scorched by flames as she raced through her burning forest. She knew this had been coming, she'd felt it in the hollows of the wood and the dirt of her garden, but she was hoping she'd have more time to prepare. It seemed fate had a different plan for her family, the cruel hand it was dealing them now had no sympathy from her tortured heart.
The sight of the home she'd built with her husband being nothing but a pile of charred wood and shattered stone was too much to bear. She sobbed, anger and sorrow clouding her eyes as she screamed at the wretched scene, cursing the demon offspring who'd done this. He was still in her forest, her home. Eliad had led him away as she took their son, hid him in attempts to protect him from the attack they were currently under. Her hands still trembled as she remembered Damien's big Golden eyes staring at her as the willow closed around him, the enchanted bark untouched by the flames and hidden from any demons searching eyes.
She would see her son again, once her and Eliad took care of this intruder, they would fetch him and return to Eliad's kingdom where they would be safe from any further onslaught.
"Sybil."
The rich voice of her husband beckoned her, from across the valley, closer to the mountains. She pushed herself off her knees, away from the burnt remains of their home. She raised her hands, a purple aura bursting to life like the embers around her. In seconds she was by Eliads side, forming a protective barrier in front of the both of them and blocking a burst of green flames. Eliad's large, warm hands were on her in seconds, pushing back her hair and cupping her bruised cheek on his palm. His crimson eyes bled with fury and he pressed his forehead against hers.
"My love." His voice wavered, an apology in between the syllables. She placed her hand over his, pressing a kiss to his bloody lips. The sight of his own bloody and bruised face fueled the flames of her own rage and once she parted from him she locked her violet eyes with his.
"To the end of the universe." She uttered sternly, a recanting of their vows as an obnoxious cackle boomed above them.
"And into the next." He replied, determination blooming his eyes as they both shared a smile. Together they could withstand this, they could make it to the other side. Another kiss, more passionate, a push for the upcoming battle. They were ready.
"Oh how sweet, I'm going to puke." The demon hovering above them grinned, a twisted snake-like smile with razor teeth and a bloody promise in his eyes.
"If you're done love birds could we perhaps get back to me killing you?" The demon didn't wait for an answer, flooding their vision with that green fire. It cracked against the protective barrier and Sybil grunted, raising her arms in attempts to put more strength behind it. He was strong, she was only hoping not stronger than Eliad.
Eliad, as of reading her mind, pressed forward—leaping into the air and over her barrier. His chromatic black wings burst from his back and carried him toward the demon, he summoned his sword and swung it at the red headed beat's throat. The demon dodged and Sybil took the moment to change her barrier to pointed arrows, shooting them at him in quick succession.
He laughed gleefully As he dodged them, even when one lodged into his calf he continued with his laughter. The sound echoed, multiple voices within the cruel sound as he set the arrows in fire and redirected them back to Sybil. Eliad went from him with his sword again and Sybil batted away the arrows with a burst of energy. If she could summon herself wings this would feel more like an even fight, she didn't like Eliad being so close to him on his own.
She created platforms for herself to run up, trying to get as close as she could. She tried a spell, directing explosive bouts of energy towards the demon as Eliad kept him on the defensive. The demon grinned and within a blink of the eye he was behind Eliad, the explosives going off and sending her husband teetering to the side in surprise. She reacted quickly, forming a barrier behind him as the demon attempted to spear him, this wiped the smile off his face for a moment, an annoyed frown present for only a second. He was gone again and Sybil summoned a wheel of blade to surround herself, in case he was targeting her.
Eliad flew higher to see where he'd gone but he didn't reappear. The two breathed in ragged breaths, taking only a second to look at the other. The seconds ticked by and Sybil was on edge, keeping herself still and trying to call upon the sight of her dying forest. She couldn't sense him, couldn't see him. Frustration bit at her tongue and she cursed under her breath.
As if the words were a summoning chant a rush of air ran up Sybil's back, she turned as if in slow motion. Emerald eyes greeted her, nothing but blood lust burning within them. A sharp pain followed and she heard Eliad cry out her name. Not one to waste opportunity she summoned a dagger and drove it into the middle of the overconfident demon's chest. He hissed and disappeared again, taking his spear with him and leaving a gaping hole in her side. She clutched her side with a sharp gasp, blood pouring out between her fingers and adding to the grime on her dress.
Eliad's hand covers hers, emanating a soft red glow as he attempts to heal her. Demon's didn't have healing magic however so it was more of a temporary bandage, to stop the blood until they could really deal with it and assess the damage. She leant back against his chest, doubling the amount of blade Wheels around them and bringing them in closer.
"Did you call for your guard?"
"They're all dead, I fear everyone in my kingdom is…" The pain in Eliad's voice squeezes at her heart and she feels her breath stolen away. How could one demon take down an entire demon kingdom? Was he of royal blood? What kind of lord would allow this type of one man assassination? There were rules, laws—
"That hurt you fucking bitch." That disgusting voice snarled behind them and Eliad whipped around quickly, a noise catching in his throat Sybil had never heard before. She tries to peer over her husband's shoulder but a blinding darkness covers the sky. She feels weightless for a moment, blind and barely able to see Eliad inches away from her. She grabs onto his shoulders, fitting between his wings as he curls them back to shield her. She feels her magic coursing through her veins in attempts to regulate her blood flow but she already felt fainter from the injury. She hadn't exerted much magic for a long time and it was having an effect.
An abnormal sound fills the abyss they were floating in, something akin to a thousand screams and snapping violin strings. It's piercing and painful and both Sybil and Eliad reach to cover their ears. A white hot pain comes with the sound and Sybil feels as through her eyes and ears might burst from it.
In a desperate attempt to escape she opens a portal, it's weak and small and she can't think long enough to see where it leads. All she knows is if she stays here another moment she'll die. She wraps her arms around Eliad and they drop into the portal, the sound stops and their bodies hit the earth roughly. They writhe for a moment on the ground, clinging to each other and gasping for breath. Eliad has blood trickling from his ears and nose and she feels a wetness coming from her eyes and mouth, the familiar metallic taste causing her to wince. She sobs, angry and tired as she curls into her husband.
Why was this happening to them? What had they done to deserve such an attack?
Eliad holds her as he takes in deep breaths, trying to steady the both of them. The silence is blissful but they don't know how long it will last. Eliad helps her to her feet and with shaky arms she tries to summon another portal. But her body protests, agony ripping through her core at the mere attempt to summon her magic. She gasps and falls to her knees, Eliad dropping to her side and catching her.
"Sybil, what's wrong?" He asks, out of breath and his voice scratchy. His hands hover over her wound but she shakes her head. It was something more than that.
"He did something to me, in that void, what did he do?" She sobbed, gasped for air and clutched her arms, leaning into Eliad's chest. She felt off, her body felt empty, like she'd been stranded in a desert for eternity and was only a husk.
Eliad's arms are the only thing keeping her together and he can only press a kiss to her hair and whisper promises that they'll be okay. But they won't be, they're in an unknown world without—
"Damien!" She cries, an ache far worse than anything forming in her chest. She grabs onto Eliad's arm as her upper body slumps forward, becoming parallel with her legs.
"Our baby, he's still there—Eliad—he's alone!" She cries, unable to stop herself as she tries to feel for him. They aren't in her forest, they aren't in their world, he's gone and he's alone and she can only think of the fear in his golden eyes as she left him there.
"We'll get back to him my love, I promise you we'll find a way." Eliad's own voice is clogged with grief and he folds his chest over her, sobbing gently into her hair. She tries to raise her arms, tries to summon a portal again but her body is wracked with pain and Eliad's holds her as her violent screams turn into silent sobs. She had no idea where the demon had gone, if her son was safe. She fell limp against Eliad after hours of writhing, only fully becoming still as the exhaustion forced her into unconsciousness.
Her last coherent thought was a promise.
'I will come back for you my beloved boy, I will c you…'
