Het wereldvermaarde kamerkoor The Crossing uit de Verenigde Staten brengt tijdens The Big Sing twee Europese premières. Tijdens het openingsconcert van het festival, op dinsdag 4 juli, zingt het koor in De Schuur in Haarlem de geënsceneerde voorstelling FARMING. Een dag later staat in het Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam Titration van singer-songwriter en multi-instrumentalist Shara Nova op het programma. Het Belgische ensemble Graindelavoix eert in de Grote of St. Bavokerk in Haarlem renaissance-componist Josquin des Prez. The Real Group uit Zweden, misschien wel het populairste a capella-ensemble ter wereld, brengt in PHIL Haarlem een set pop- en jazzbewerkingen van eigen hand. De kaartverkoop voor bovenstaande uitvoeringen start op 10 mei. Eind mei wordt de volledige festivalprogrammering bekendgemaakt. The Big Sing vindt plaats van za 1 t/m zo 9 juli 2023 in Haarlem en Amsterdam. Uit de Verenigde Staten: The Crossing Choir De groots opgezette scenische voorstelling FARMING van componist Ted Hearne is een hartstochtelijke satire waarin The Crossing worstelt met thema’s als de voedselindustrie en het neokolonialisme. Controversiële aspecten van de hightech- en landbouwsector worden belicht. De teksten van William Penn en Jeff Bezos leggen verbanden met het duistere koloniale verleden van Amerika. FARMING is stuwend, explosief en eclectisch. We horen en zien boosheid en verontwaardiging. De voorstelling wordt uitgevoerd door 24 vocalisten, twee elektrische gitaristen, twee toetsenisten en twee percussionisten. Dinsdag 4 juli in De Schuur in Haarlem. Titration Woensdag 5 juli brengt The Crossing in het Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam het onlangs door hen op cd uitgebrachte Titration. Het is de eerste maal dat dit in Amerika alom geprezen a capella-werk van componiste en popmuzikant Shara Nova in Europa wordt uitgevoerd. Centrale vraag in deze zangcyclus: hoe ga je als mens om met een turbulente wereld die dreigt te ontsporen? Titration onderzoekt onder meer emoties als angst, verdriet, walging en woede en draagt ook suggesties aan hoe hiermee om te gaan. Shara Nova is opgeleid als klassiek componist, maar ging na haar studie snel als zangeres de popwereld in. Ze is altijd blijven componeren en schrijft veelal klassieke muziek met rock- en popinvloeden. Titration is haar eerste a capelle-opdracht. Shara Nova en haar projectband My Brightest Diamond zijn grote namen in de wereld van de indiepop. The Crossing werkte samen met onder meer de New York Philharmonic, het Philadelphia Orchestra en de Rolling Stones. Het koor trad op in zalen als het Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall en de Walt Disney Hall. Eerder dit jaar won het koor een derde Grammy Award in de categorie Best Choral Performance. Veel van de ruim 150 in opdracht gemaakte programma’s en werken behandelen sociale, ecologische en politieke kwesties. Onder leiding van chef-dirigent Donald Nally heeft het koor, dat zich vooral toelegt op hedendaagse muziek, de afgelopen jaren in de Verenigde Staten een legendarische status bereikt. Tijdens hun Europese debuut in 2019, in Haarlem en op uitnodiging van dit festival, tekende het koor voor drie uitverkochte voorstellingen. Uit België: Graindelavoix Josquin des Prez, misschien wel de grootste renaissance-componist, stierf in 1521. The Big Sing wilde zijn sterfjaar in 2021 groots vieren met zijn sacrale en wereldse muziek, maar door corona werd dat uitgesteld. Nu, twee jaar na dato, verheugt The Big Sing zich enorm op de komst van het fameuze ensemble Graindelavoix, dat onder leiding van oprichter en dirigent Bjorn Schmelzer debuteert op het festival. Waar anders dan in de kerkelijke grandeur van de Haarlemse Grote of St. Bavo zou hun alom geprezen Josquin, De Ondode rondom de Vlaamse meester plaats kunnen vinden? Het programma omvat melancholische vijf- en zesstemmige chansons van ‘de late Josquin des Prez’. Uit Zweden: The Real Group The Real Group behoort tot de beste en meest populaire a capella-ensembles wereldwijd. De groep toert al meer dan 30 jaar en blijft overal ter wereld een breed en groot publiek boeien. Acht jaar geleden waren zij voor het laatst in Nederland te horen. ‘We are our own genre’, is hun lijfspreuk.Tijdens The Big Sing brengen zij op zaterdag 8 juli eigen bewerkingen van muziek van onder meer John Lennon & Paul McCartney, Toots Thielemans, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Daft Punk en Gregory Porter. Naast hun optreden geven zij ook workshops, een sing-along en staat er een openbare repetitie op het programma. The last words spoken by Jesus were “it is finished.” In the original Hebrew language it was one word, tetelestai, which meant it is paid in full.

Today we celebrate Good Friday because of what Jesus paid on that cross for us. He paid for all our sins by being the perfect sacrifice for us sinners. ☦️

Before Jesus, people had to atone for their sins by sacrificing an unblemished offering to the Lord. Today we don’t have to do that because Jesus lived a life without sin and God sacrificed His only Son just for us.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” ‭‭John‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬
