About Me
Hello hello! You can call me Scatter when not referring to any of my kins- I’m 22, trans(he/him pronouns), and gay and ace. I’m kinda new to the kin community but consider this a safe space for fictionkin(or all types of otherkin!), fictives, coping link, or whomever may identify with/as fictional characters!
Thinspo, transmeds/truscums, and exclusionists/aphobes please do not interact!
I would love to interact with people from my sources and talk about canons, make friends, and all the like! However, I’m not looking for canonmates(I’ve had a few bad run-ins with people telling me my canons were “wrong” if they didn’t match with theirs, and would rather not go through that again), but I greatly enjoy discussing different canons! Doubles are free to interact!
Disclaimer: I use fictionkin to cope with mental illness, so please try to understand why I do this and don’t interact if you have anti-kin sentiment. I ain’t hurting anyone, and I wouldn’t be here today if I didn’t have fiction to fall back on, so please respect this harmless fun <3

THE WEEKLY REVIEW: This Side of Paradise by Fitzgerald
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RATING: 4/5
{I absolutely recommend the book, especially to writers who are looking to learn complex character development. This is Fitzgerald’s forte. His plots do not always move at the rapid pace of a contemporary novel, but they are driven by careful character formation and decision, which add an intricate delicacy to the storyline. Notice the way the imagery, the dialogue, and even how the protagonist’s resolutions all lend vital contributions to the final realizations made at the end of the book, bringing together the final pieces of establishment that grow Amory from a character full of flaws and disillusioned dreams in to a personage capable of profound sympathy.}
Fitzgerald’s iconic literary prose acquires most of its renown upon the foundation of his prominent success, The Great Gatsby. The vibrant and passionate imagery trickling through the seams of his novels, manifests itself within the poetic voice of an intellectual cynic, with whose tone asserts the barest hint of hopeful sentiment at the expense of its romantic convictions. This same voice resounding upon the prose of Gatsby, as well glows upon the pages of Fitzgerald’s debut, This Side of Paradise, but through a more stripped and vulnerable narrator in whom the author compromised parts of his personage to create. The book was written in the year 1919, conceived after the author’s devastating break-up with debutante Zelda Sayre, who refused to marry him due to his lack of fortune, and sent the young Fitzgerald in to a temporary spell of alcoholism. In a last attempt to win Zelda, he spun together from the seams of an old manuscript This Side of Paradise, and the novel was sold to Charles Scribner and Sons and became an instant success. Fitzgerald and Zelda married within a week of the book’s principle publication.
The novel begins upon the introduction of Amory Blaine, and from there on is divided in to three parts: “Book One: The Romantic Egoist,” “Interlude,” and “Book Two: The Education of a Personage.” These sections of the book follow the formation and complicated development of Amory’s character, who goes from being an inexhaustible romantic full of brilliant aspiration and expectation for himself, to a disillusioned cynic broken by the shards of shattered dreams and a tragic romantic relationship in which he is left devastated. It is essentially a coming of age story, detailing one’s unavoidable loss of innocence and the parallels such effects cast upon a generation. It is a story about learning and coming to understand who you are, and all of the triumphs and falls that come with such a quest. It is about a human’s deepest desire to be known and needed. In essence, the novel is perhaps F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most vulnerable piece of work for it so resonates with the development of his own character.
There are numerous literary techniques implemented in This Side of Paradise, which can create doubt towards its hasty conception, provoking wonder at how the prose, free verse, narrative drama, letters, and poems could ever possibly fit into a cohesive narration. However, upon further introspection, it’s clear that these disparities were deliberate. The poetic prose full of romantic sentimentality characterizes their fictional author, Amory, in a unique dimension the reader would have otherwise lacked. It adds emphasis to the dreamer in him; subtly slipping the reader in to a fantasy that is foreshadowed as both transient and intangible. The narrative drama, appearing as a sort of script, is implemented in the fast-paced scenes immersed in the glistening crowds of the Jazz Age, reflecting a time where the aesthetics did not hold one’s attention through a notice of detailed intricacies, but rather through the artificial materialism glittering above an ephemeral surface of diamonds and fashion. Each style adds a different dimension to the novel’s world.
However, what impressed me most about the novel was the comprehensive changing of Amory’s character. Already known for complex development, Fitzgerald’s portrays Amory as an egotistical dreamer, insecure in his tendency to be vain and unambitious, overwhelmed by the options and possibilities of his generation. “Amory wondered how people could fail to notice that he was a boy marked by glory,” and “it was always the becoming he dreamed of, never the being.” (Loc 220, 224) For writers, it’s important to note Fitzgerald’s brilliant use of imagery exaggerating Amory’s attitude through the use of romantically emphasized descriptions that detail the aspects of the protagonist’s beginnings.
His glimpse of [New York] as vivid whiteness against a deep-blue sky had left a picture of splendor that rivalled the dream cities in the Arabian Nights; but this time he saw it by the electric light, and the romance gleamed from the chariot-race sign…from the women’s eyes…(Loc 377)
The dazzling anticipation of a promising future creates a gossamer film of enchantment through which Amory principally sees the world. The imagery of Amory’s expectation builds the world in which we find at the beginning of the novel. A perfect set-up for a perfect fall.
Many nights he lay there dreaming awake…where ivory women delved in romantic mysteries…while the orchestras played Hungarian waltzes and the air was thick and exotic with intrigue and moonlight and adventure. (Loc 416)
These descriptions, punctuated by the constant repetition of Amory’s “dreaming awake,” illustrate the dreamlike sequences of his youth, and the story flies by with an exhilarated sensation of ethereal elation—“everything was hallowed by the haze of his own youth” (Loc 1174)—only to come to an abrupt halt upon the “Interlude,” during which the war penetrates the story’s conscious even while being ambiguously described and glossed over. This segue in to the Armory’s fateful meeting with Rosalind, and the slow deterioration of his ambitions as his time in Princeton ends, begin a new series of images that bear the weight of a creeping disillusionment. Upon the dissolution of Amory and Rosalind’s relationship, the descriptions of life following grow heavier and heavier with an indistinct burden as Amory begins a slow disassociation from the world.
The night and the scarred trees were like scenery in a play…shadowy and unreal…Amory thought of the past that ever seemed strange and unbelievable. (Loc 2965) …while the rain drizzled on Amory looked futilely back at the stream of his life, all its glitterings and dirty shadows…(Loc 3317) “In a sense this gradual renunciation of beauty was the second step after his disillusion had been made complete…” (Loc 3587) “As an endless dream it went on; the spirit of the past brooding over a new generation…still fed romantically on the mistakes and half-forgotten dreams of dead statesmen and poets. (Loc 3603)
Such images follow the development of his character, where he begins to discover what is was that he has truly always desired.
He found something that he wanted, had always wanted and always would want—not to be admired, as he had feared; not to be loved, as he had made himself believe; but to be necessary to people, to be indispensable… (Loc 3396)
It is within these brilliant revelations of discovery that the reader cannot help but empathize with Amory. Such a desire stands at the essence of a human being, as well to be known and loved. And upon each layer of disillusionment, the characters realize that such a thing stands nearly intangible at the precipice of a difficult and fallen world. However, from the beginning, Amory had to rely mostly on other people for his own characterization. Character such as Rosalind, Clara, and Eleanor, gradually foreshadow the fatal flaws in Amory, and I couldn’t help but relate his unhealthy tendencies. He uses the women and friends “as mirrors of himself, audiences before which he might do that posing absolutely essential to him,” as he struggled to know himself by any other means. (Loc 355) He is a slave to his emotions and moods, and above all his imagination: an inability to participate in the world around him, but rather get lost in the endless possibilities of an infinite yet nearing future.
This Side of Paradise concludes with one of Fitzgerald’s characteristically notable endings; a page upon which Amory cries:
“I know myself…but that is all.” (Loc 3396)

Rhetorical Profile of F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote this in a letter to his daughter, Scottie, “All good writing is swimming under water and holding your breath.” This is something no one on earth finds easy to do, since it is against our natural need of air. Excellency in writing, in the same manner, does not appear easily. It takes countless hours of practice, hard work, and pain to write something worthy. At the same time, good writing is even risky, unsafe and daring. F. Scott Fitzgerald surely knows it very well – writing for him was never only a job to make ends meet, but rather a dangerous and exciting adventure.
Frances Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in 1896, St Paul, Minnesota. Being an ambitious and intelligent young man, he was unsatisfied with spending his life in a Midwest small town. He received education in Princeton University, and dedicated all his time there to writing, which got him placed on academic probation. Determined to become a writer, not much time passed before he eventually dropped out of college. He then joined the US army in 1917, and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Afraid that he would die before having a chance to leave any literary legacy behind, he wrote his first novel the Romantic Egotist before reporting to duty – however the war ended in 1918, before he was ever deployed. During his serving time in Montgomery, Alabama, he met the love of his life – 18-year-old Zelda Sayre – who rejected his proposal due to his unstable job as a writer. Furious and desperate, Scott moved to New York City, wrote and published the novel that started everything – This Side of Paradise. The novel was a huge success. It did not only bring 23-year-old Scott fame and wealth overnight, but also convinced Zelda Sayre to become Zelda Fitzgerald.
This Side of Paradise tells the story of a handsome, intelligent and young Midwesterner – Amory Blaine, who is deeply convinced that he is bound to do something great, leaves his eccentric mother to attend Princeton University, but later drops out and enlists to fight the World War I, which ended before he was deployed. During that time, he had several romances. The most significant one is with Rosalind Connage, who ends up marrying a wealthy man and leaving Amory heartbroken. The plot is simple and commonly found during 1920’s literacy field, so what is so special about This Side of Paradise that it became such a magnificent triumph?
F. Scott Fitzgerald used a lot of his past experiences to write this novel. The characters are fictional, but at the same time, they are blessed with traits and qualities of people around Fitzgerald. For example, Amory’s love affair with the debutante, Rosalind Connage is heavily based on his relationship with his wife, Zelda Sayre – Scott and Zelda fell in love at first sight, so did Amory and Rosalind; Zelda and Rosalind are both from established families and have rebellious personalities; Zelda broke up with Scott for his unstable job as a writer when he was drafting this book, while Rosalind left Amory and married a man with wealth. In fact, Fitzgerald even cited Zelda’s journal as Rosalind’s to portrait the character. It is without any doubt that Zelda is the muse for Fitzgerald’s writings. One other important technique that brings Rosalind to life is the special way of narrative – the scene where Rosalind and Amory first met is narrated in a form of dramatic writing. Different from other chapters of the book, the beginning of The Debutante is written as a play, which gives it a refreshing feeling, and makes the meeting really stand out from the rest of the novel.
Needless to say, the most seen attributes actually come from F. Scott Fitzgerald himself. Amory and Fitzgerald have very similar – almost identical experience of attending Princeton, enlisting, and are never actually deployed. More importantly, they both believe in having a promising future, but ironically end up lost in the generation. It is undeniable that F. Scott Fitzgerald put a lot of himself into Amory, which makes it rather difficult to write genuinely about this character. However, different from other commonly found writers might do – beautify their own motives and actions, F. Scott Fitzgerald writes very honestly. As indicated in the title of Book One, Fitzgerald acknowledges Amory as “a romantic egotist”. He also wrote that “It was always the becoming he dreamed of, never the being. This, too, was quite characteristic of Amory”, which reveals his own personal trait of being egotistical and reluctance for working.
Meanwhile, the building of the character Amory is also heavily influenced by the character in The Picture of Dorian Gray – It is even mentioned in the novel itself. In Paradise, Amory met Kerry in Princeton, who introduced him to Oscar Wilde. “Kerry read ‘Dorian Gray’ and simulated Lord Henry, following Amory about, addressing him as ‘Dorian’ and pretending to encourage in him wicked fancies and attenuated tendencies to ennui.” (Fitzgerald 41). Indeed, Amory and Dorian have a lot in common – they are both good-looking and narcissistic. Dorian ended up killing himself, and Amory lost everyone he was close to and his ego. As mentioned before, Amory is a reflection of Fitzgerald himself. It is taxing, and takes courage for a person to examine oneself so straightforward and shows it to the whole world, just like Fitzgerald commented on good writing, “swimming underwater and holding your breath”.
As many would know, the theme that frequently appeared in Scott Fitzgerald’s works is the death of American dream. Fitzgerald is one of the most representatives of “lost generation” – young men who have lived and suffered from seeing millions of meaningless dead during the World War I, and lost their purposes of living. At the very end of the novel, Fitzgerald wrote this following paragraph.
“Long after midnight the towers and spires of Princeton were visible, with here and there a late-burning light – and suddenly out of the clear darkness the sound of bells. As an endless dream it went on; the spirit of the past brooding over a new generation, the chosen youth from the muddled, unchastened world, still fed romantically on the mistakes and half-forgotten dreams of dead statesmen and poets. Here was a new generation, shouting the old cries, learning the old creeds, through a reverie of long days and nights, destined finally to go out into the dirty grey turmoil to follow love and pride; a new generation dedicated more than the last to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find all God’s dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken…” (Fitzgerald 205).
Instead of portraying the people directly, Fitzgerald first focuses on describing the environment, which creates a lonesome atmosphere. Then the contrast between the “dead”, “old spirit”, “old cries”, “old creeds”, and the “new generation” shows the strong desperation and lack of direction of the generation, just like Fitzgerald himself. He had a strong belief in having a bright and rising future when he was young, however, fame and wealth that came too quickly, a war that diminished the meaning of life lead to his alcoholism and fallen ego at last. Reflecting back to the quote from his letter to Scottie, Scott Fitzgerald was struggling to write good novels, and slowly drowning in reality.
F. Scott Fitzgerald lived and wrote like a moth to flames. His lifestyle was tragic, but the way how he used his past experience and his own self to portray a generation of lost souls, and his innovative methods of writing remain as treasures in world literature legacy.

“ father’s day, huh? “ he mumbled, breath frothing glass, “ so it seems i forgot again . . . “      Scott’s blue eyes looked down to the side, staring holes into the floor. If big black flames were to suddenly appear, no amount of alarm would cause him to move. The entire building -- him and all -- would disintegrate into the high heavens, a cool and calm paradise for the Hell he would bring. How tremendously worth going, but every muscle remained taut in conviction, earnest control of the path he would tread once no fire came to be.      But everything, everything seemed so damn breakable. Everything and everyone, waiting to crash and shatter, like glass plates and metal cars. All of life and love seemed indistinguishable from material possessions, when anything truly of worth had slipped from his grasp already.      “ i don’t think there’s enough alcohol in the world . . . “ Scott’s voice trailed off, as if he wasn’t sure what to say. But, it was poignant enough to understand, if there was anyone around listening.      voluntary amnesia, a welcome salve placed on his burning, lonely heart.
