1899-1902: The Philippine-American War
My contribution for day 5 of @historical-hetalia-week ! After the Treaty of Paris of 1898, the Philippines was sold by Spain to the United States for $20 million dollars. When fighting broke out in February 1899, Filipinos saw it as a continuation of the revolution against Spain, but it was only an insurrection in the eyes of the US. Modern relations between the two nations are relatively friendly and this event has mostly vanished from public memory, leading to it sometimes being referred as The Forgotten War.

-This was inspired by the cover of Heneral Luna, a great film set during this period, and Maaf, a SEA-focused doujijn made by dinosaurusgede. Check them (and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, which is Luna’s sequel) out on Netflix or YT; they pretty cool.
-The US ruled the Philippines from 4 July 1902 - 1946. It was supposed to be 1945 but the Japanese invaded and ruled during WWII so it got a bit postponed. There is a lot of irony in that date. (x)
-The war was over by 1902, but fighting continued in small pockets until 1913. The defeat of the Moros led to the annexation of Mindanao, which the Spanish had never fully captured during their time. (x)
