Something I've been meaning throw out there which that ask reminded me of:
Tarinne is actually poly. Pre-Everything Getting Fucked Up (Third War) she bounced around a few different polycules while trying to find the right place and people. After the Third War, though, all the shit she had to deal with turned intimacy into a really big ask. It was only after meeting Cathala twenty or so years afterward that she finally broke through that wall in her head... mostly.
She and Cathala have gone through so much together and she finds it hard to consider "starting over" with someone new. I plan to explore the start of their relationship in a fic eventually, but it's a really big deal when Tarinne is finally comfortable enough with her to get properly intimate. She'd have to go through all that again to some extent. Throw in all the post-Third War fuckery, and starting a new relationship (or even just sleeping around) feels like way too much to deal with.
After secession when things finally calm down in their lives (at least for a bit), and after she can finally acknowledge those wants and needs again, she's gonna go to Cathala about it.
Cathala on the other hand is monogamous, in the sense she only wants and needs one person. But she's fine with "sharing" if I must put it that way. She doesn't see any issues with it; it's just not for her.
So, while that'll be a moment(tm) in their relationship for sure, they'll talk it out and Tarinne will, sometime in the mid- to far-future, go out again and find a second someone or maybe a few new someones :)
