Many installers use 1/2-inch diameter PEX tubing, but 3/8-inch works just as well. It’s easier to install the smaller-diameter tubing.

The tubing is installed in a loop fashion under the flooring or in an insulated concrete slab. The lengths of each loop should not exceed 300 total feet and the sweet spot, if you can achieve it, is about 200 feet.

A heating zone may require three, four, or more, loops. The ends of the PEX tubing feeding each loop are connected to manifolds. A secret tip to provide the best efficiency is to put the manifolds as close to each zone as possible. Many installers, unfortunately, put the manifolds down in the boiler room. DEAR ELIZABETH: Radiant floor and wall heating is by no means hype. In fact, it’s not hyped enough. It dates back to over 5,000 years ago as wise Chinese and Korean builders incorporated it into buildings. The Greeks and Romans also employed heated floors and walls.

I’ve been blessed to heat my own home for the past ten years with radiant heat. I have a combination of radiant floor heating in my walk-out basement and the rest of the house is heated with hot water that travels through baseboard radiators. Prior to that, I had stayed warm for fifty-five years like you with forced-air heat. It is luxurious heat, so much so I often lay on the basement floor.

Radiant heat takes advantage of the simple physics principle that heat travels to cold. The average human body just doing light or medium activity gets rid of about 400 BTU/hour. If you put yourself next to a cold surface or stand on a cold tile floor, the cold starts to suck the heat out of you at a faster rate and you feel the sensation of being cold.

This is why radiant heat is so magical because it tends to make floors and walls closer to the same temperature as your body. Eliminating moving air, as you have with forced-air systems, is also a benefit as the circulating air actually promotes evaporation of perspiration which makes you feel colder.

The topic of residential radiant floor heat is extremely complex. What you need to know are the basics so you have a system designed that’s going to spoil you with comfort. Let’s get started.

The first thing that needs to be done is an accurate heat-loss calculation on a room-by-room basis for your new home. There are all sorts of software products that will do this and it’s just a matter of adding measurements and data into a form.

The heat loss calculation allows the installer to design the system so you get the correct amount of heat into each room. I happen to be installing a top-of-the-line radiant heat system in my daughter’s new home frame home so all of this is quite topical right now.

The beauty of a radiant heating system is that you can divide your new home into heating zones with ease. Each zone has its own thermostat and in in-floor temperature sensor. This allows you to keep different zones at different temperatures during the day and night to save energy. My daughter’s home will have seven separate zones.

I’m using PEX plastic tubing that snaps into solid aluminum heat transfer plates that are screwed to the underside of the wood subfloor. The plates are spaced at 8 inches on center for the most part. It’s important to realize you must use a special PEX pipe that limits oxygen diffusion into the closed hydronic liquid part of the heating system.

I’ve had the best luck with the Uponor brand of PEX piping and they make an hePEX(TM) product. There are other PEX tubings that minimize oxygen diffusion into the system, but do your research and make sure you have the correct tubing installed at your home.

Many installers use 1/2-inch diameter PEX tubing, but 3/8-inch works just as well. It’s easier to install the smaller-diameter tubing.

The tubing is installed in a loop fashion under the flooring or in an insulated concrete slab. The lengths of each loop should not exceed 300 total feet and the sweet spot, if you can achieve it, is about 200 feet.

A heating zone may require three, four, or more, loops. The ends of the PEX tubing feeding each loop are connected to manifolds. A secret tip to provide the best efficiency is to put the manifolds as close to each zone as possible. Many installers, unfortunately, put the manifolds down in the boiler room. You can hide these small manifolds behind access panels in closets near the zones.

Be sure to get the state-of-the-art recirculating pumps that use about 5 watts of power. Popular pumps used by many installers gobble up 70 watts of power. These low-wattage pumps are super smart and will save you lots on your electric bill.

Be sure to purchase a modulating combi boiler that only creates enough heat to fill the demand at that moment in time. Old boilers would be either on full blast or off. I have a new modulating boiler here in my home and my propane usage dropped significantly this winter.

Affiliate Marketing in China: Affiliate Networks and Programs

China was one of the first places where I delivered a keynote speech on affiliate marketing in 2011. Two years later, Chinese ended up being the first language into which my affiliate management bestseller was translated. The Chinese version was called “70-Days’ Affiliate Advertising Combat”. Don’t ask why.

Several days ago, a client had asked me about the top affiliate networks in China and off I went into my research on the subject. The results of what I was able to find out, I’d like to present to you in this blog post of mine.

Historically, the Chinese government always kept a close eye on the Internet and how its citizens are using it. Interestingly enough, however, the world has been open to shopping with Chinese e-tailers. A couple of facts exemplify this well:

In 2009 Alibaba, one of China’s top e-tailers, conceived and organized what ended up becoming “the biggest commerce day in the world” — the Singles Day. In 2018, in 24 hours the gross value of merchandise sold reached $30.8 billion, with the first $1 billion hit in just 1 minute and 25 seconds. Should you be interested, this interactive dashboard can give you a feel for Alibaba’s international commerce segment. In a case of one particular affiliate network, admitad, in one year alone, nearly $500 million in sales were generated from cross-border CPA (cost-per-acquisition) sales driven by affiliate marketing programs.

The “cross-border” tendency, actually, goes both ways. Just as the world shops with Chinese online stores, so do the residents of China (and especially the quickly-evolving Chinese middle class) happily shop globally. Cross-border online purchases by China’s online shoppers grew from less than $2 billion in 2010 to more than $200 billion in 2017. The 100 times growth is nothing short of amazing.

But what about affiliate marketing in China? What platforms are available (for advertisers and affiliates) there?

Based on what we see today, affiliate marketing opportunities in China can be roughly split into three categories: (i) affiliate networks, (ii) sub-affiliate networks, and (iii) individual affiliate programs. Let’s dive into each of these below.

Traditional Affiliate Networks

An affiliate network is, essentially, a technology provider that facilitates the tracking and reporting in affiliate marketing programs. There are a few affiliate networks to consider in relation to China-based e-commerce businesses.

CHANet

CHANet is an abbreviation which stands for “China Affiliate Network”. Following the success of its sister network in Japan — JANet (short for Japan Affiliate Network) — which was launched in 2002, CHANet claims to work with more than 300,000 affiliate websites and hosts/supports affiliate programs for numerous Chinese (and Western) brands.

If you are looking to enter the Chinese market, this is a platform worth including in your due diligence.

ChineseAN

ChineseAN (which, of course, stands for “Chinese Affiliate Network”) — originally started in Hong Kong but present in Mainland China and Taiwan too — positions itself as “the only global Chinese affiliate network” working with advertisers “from over 15 countries” helping them “scale up in the region.” Priding itself on the flexibility to customize advertiser solutions, this affiliate network supports pretty much every performance-based model out there: CPS, CPL, CPC, CPM and more.

Anyone interested in tapping into the “Greater China” market should consider these guys seriously.

Non-Chinese Affiliate Networks

Based on our research, multiple China-based advertisers run affiliate programs on West-oriented affiliates networks. This goes well in line with the tendency for cross-boarder e-commerce. The desire of Chinese brands to reach non-Chinese audiences is often effectively satisfied by tapping into non-Chinese affiliate networks. Here are just a few examples of notably successful affiliate programs run by Chinese brands on Western affiliate networks (with the respective affiliate networks listed in parenthesis after each):

SheIn (CJ Affiliate, ShareASale, Pepperjam, admitad)

ZAFUL (CJ Affiliate, Rakuten Affiliate Network, ShareASale, admitad, LinkConnector, Webgains, and more!)

LightInTheBox (CJ Affiliate, TradeDoubler, Webgains, admitad)

Wondershare (CJ Affiliate, Rakuten Affiliate Network, ShareASale, LinkConnector, etc)

RoseGal (CJ Affiliate, Rakuten Affiliate Network, TradeDoubler, Pepperjam, Commission Factory, AvantLink, ShareAsale, and more)

Fairy Season (CJ Affiliate, Rakuten Affiliate Network, Commission Factory, Webgains)

There are many more Chinese brands that employ the approach of casting a wide net in non-Chinese affiliate networks – in hopes of reaching their target audience. Sometimes this approach works, sometimes it doesn’t (see point #3 here).

Sub-Affiliate Networks

Sub-affiliate networks leverage the networks of sub-affiliates that work with them. The sub-affiliate network would join a brand’s affiliate program on a traditional affiliate network – to, then, let their army of publishers/websites market the brand, splitting the commission with these publishers.

Duomai

Duomai is well-established Chinese network which seems to operate on a hybrid model: having both direct relationships with advertisers, and often operating on a sub-affiliate model – working as an affiliate promoting merchants that operate their affiliate programs through other affiliate networks (e.g.: Awin, Chinesean, Glopss, and others)

Yiqifa

Yiqifa is a fairly large Beijing-based pay-for-performance network, operating in China’s market since 2004 and cooperating “with 600,000 website owners” to market both Chinese and foreign brands. Just as Duomai above, Yiqifa seems to be open to direct relationships (besides numerous sub-affiliate ones that they have with brands).

Individual Affiliate Programs

There are also a number of Chinese businesses that run their affiliate programs on their own platforms (or solutions like HasOffers and similar), not operating through any of the above-mentioned affiliate networks.

Amazon.cn Associates Program which pays “up to 7% commission” is a classic example

Finally, if you are looking at the Chinese market as a Western advertiser, you may also want to consider:

Influencer marketing platforms — like PARKLU — as a way to tap into this market

and

China-oriented affiliates — like BorderX Lab — to help you build a bridge to your potential customers there

Conclusion

If you are looking to tap into China’s quickly-evolving market, consider the above-mentioned local networks and platforms. If, on the other hand, you are a Chinese business, looking to grow your revenues through exporting, consider building an affiliate program on Western affiliate networks (as exemplified in the “Non-Chinese Affiliate Networks” section above).

Price Watch:

Bitcoin is up 0.82% to about $6,300 following a fall of 12% last week and 15% the week before that following a multi-week price drop. Analysts have cited the strong US Dollar as a reason for the recent drops. One thing more striking about bitcoin’s recent price movement is that the downward movements have been much less dramatic than the rest of the market. This could be, as Tom Lee would say, because “bitcoin is the best house in a tough neighborhood.” Others have continued to blame the SEC’s rejection of the Winklevoss’ second ETF. In any case, so far it’s clear that bitcoin has historically performed best in bear markets, surpassing gold in settlement volume despite its 70% price drop.

Ethereum is down 11% to $287 following a fall of 24% last week and 14% the week before. Aside from arguments that explain the whole market’s downturn (e.g. strong US Dollar, ETF rejection, etc.), analysts believe ethereum, in particular, is falling because ICOs are selling off ether. As Cinnober analyst Eric Wall said on his Twitter, “The problem when you give millions of ETH to ETH competitors is that they can unload the ETH on the spot market and short ETH on the futures market before that, so they’re not only securing the funding but also manipulating the underlying spot market in favor of their shorts”. The analyses follow news that BitMEX shorts of ETHUSD are at an all-time high. As far as movements this week, ether has been all over the place, dropping as low as $249 before rising almost 17% to the crucial $300 level. The rally correlated with the issuance of $120 million worth of Tether tokens, indicating the price increases could be due to new capital entering the market.

The entire cryptocurrency market cap is flat this week despite intermittent price drops by both ripple (XRP) and ethereum. The market briefly fell below $200 billion this week before returning to the $208 billion mark. Some altcoins have been doing well, like VeChain, which had its price spike nearly 50% overnight. Other coins such as Ontology and PundiX recorded similar gains.

Exchanges:

U.K. Exchange Launches Bitcoin Cash Futures– U.K.-based Crypto Facilities launched a product that allows investors to bet on the future price movements of bitcoin cash, as well as hedge risk in their overall cryptocurrency portfolios. The launch marks the appearance of the first regulated, USD-denominated bitcoin cash futures.

Binance + LCX Launch Fiat-to-Crypto Exchange in Liechtenstein – Binance, the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange by volume, has partnered with Liechtenstein Cryptoassets Exchange (LCX) to create and launch a cryptocurrency trading platform that allows users to trade directly against fiat currencies such as the euro. The Malta-based company announced Binance LCX would be at the forefront of their trading operations in the Central European economy.

Coinbase Files Patent for Direct Bitcoin Payments System – Crypto exchange Coinbase recently filed for a patent detailing a new system to enable online users to make bitcoin payments more securely. The patent, published on August 14, will allow users to make payments directly from their bitcoin wallet. Coinbase’s patents have drawn criticism in the past from those who say they are “seeking to create a monopoly on Bitcoin services,” an accusation CEO Brian Armstrong strongly denied in a blog post on Medium. These accusations are resurfacing after a recent report from Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. stated that if traditional firms did not act soon, they risked Coinbase gaining an ‘unassailable’ position.

Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Note Now Available in U.S. Brokerage Accounts – Bloomberg reports that Bitcoin Tracker One, an exchange-traded note (ETN) that has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 2015, can now be traded in U.S. brokerage accounts under ticker symbol CXBTF. Technically, Bitcoin Tracker One will be publicly-quoted as a foreign debt instrument on a U.S.-based over-the-counter (OTC) market, the same type of platform that lists Grayscale Investments’ popular Bitcoin Investment Trust (OTC: GBTC). This product does offer an advantage, in that it’s not likely to have a premium like the Bitcoin Investment Trust does.

Crypto Wallet Browser Toshi Rebrands to ‘Coinbase Wallet’ – Toshi, the open source DApp browser and wallet designed by Coinbase will now be known as Coinbase Wallet. In a Medium post published on Wednesday, the company says the name change is beyond branding, and more of a “larger effort to invest in products” that will shape the future of the decentralized web.

Ethereum Classic Price Surges Ahead of Coinbase Listing – Ethereum Classic was at a two-month high of $18.50 earlier this month, the same level it had reached on July 7 when the Coinbase announcement made further rounds. The listing on Robinhood also had an effect in boosting ETC’s price.

Startups:

Pantera Capital Seeks $175 Million For Third Venture Fund – Pantera Capital, which has pioneered investments in cryptocurrency assets, has set its goal for its third venture fund at $175 million, surpassing the $25 million raised for its second fund and the $13 million from its first one, according to TechCrunch. A new filing for a Pantera venture fund offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission notes the company has already raised $71.4 million in commitments from 90 investors.

Genesis Mining Offers Customers a Discount to Offset Falling Bitcoin Rewards – Genesis Mining, responding to falling bitcoin mining rewards for its customers, is offering a discount to help customers withstand the current downturn, the company announced in a blog. The company’s Radiant bitcoin mining upgrade price per 1 TH/s has been lowered from $285 to $180. Operating time has been changed from open-ended to five years, incurring no termination. In addition, the daily maintenance fee has been cut to $0.14.

Enterprise:

Capital One Files Blockchain Authentication Patent – Capital One has applied for a patent entitled “Blockchain Systems and Methods for User Authentication.” The patent was filed in Virginia, USA, with Johnathan Weimer and Ryan Fox listed as the inventors of the authentication system. The move comes as the latest blockchain use in the banking industry, with Chinese banks already implementing blockchain systems. Barclays, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan have also filed blockchain patents.

Demand Film Launches Cryptocurrency – Australian-based Demand Film has released a new virtual currency to reward users who promote and watch movie trailers. Demand Film is officially releasing the cryptocurrency, known as ‘Screencreds,’ before the company launches in Germany next Tuesday.

39% of Enterprises Believe Blockchain is ‘Overhyped’ – According to the Deloitte 2018 global blockchain survey, almost 39% of the respondents were of the view that blockchain technology was ‘overhyped.’ The study polled over 1,000 blockchain-savvy executives at firms boasting annual revenues of $0.5 billion or more in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France, and China. Nonetheless, respondents did see benefits, with 84% of those polled saying blockchain was more secure.

UPS Files Blockchain Routing Patent – According to documents published by the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) on Thursday, the Georgia-based UPS has applied for a patent that utilizes blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) to route packages throughout an international supply chain that may include multiple carriers. Once a package has been scanned into a packaging facility, the system will automatically select a route based on the service offerings of network-connected shipping providers. As the package travels to its destination, information about the shipment will be recorded in the blockchain ledger, allowing the system to rate whether service providers are meeting the obligations of their respective service offerings.

Bitcoin Investor Sues AT&T for $224 Million after Mobile-Linked Theft – According to CNBC, California resident Michael Terpin has filed a 69-page complaint against AT&T in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, in which he alleges that he lost $24 million worth of cryptocurrency after the cellular service provider negligently allowed a hacker to obtain unauthorized access to his cell phone account. In addition to the $24 million he lost in the two thefts, Terpin is seeking $200 million in punitive damages from AT&T, which is the world’s largest telecommunications provider and the second-largest mobile services provider.

The tubing is installed in a loop fashion under the flooring or in an insulated concrete slab. The lengths of each loop should not exceed 300 total feet and the sweet spot, if you can achieve it, is about 200 feet.

A heating zone may require three, four, or more, loops. The ends of the PEX tubing feeding each loop are connected to manifolds.
