Dumb Theory of the Tryna...
Yo I forgot to post this last week lol
Don’t take this remotely seriously, I just thought it was a neat idea and a sort of interesting “what if” scenario. It basically all boils down to, if given little ot no physical or mental limitations by using his mask, could Kingdom!Matoro, in theory, reanimate Mata-nui’s dead corpse? And whether or not there is any sort of implication of this not only being true, but was his being given a Tryna perhaps pre-determined in case Matoro failed to revive Mata-nui in time?
Under the cut for length!
So in regards to Kingdom!Matoro (or Matoro as a Mahri I'm general) he was bestowed with the kanohi Tryna - the mask of necromancy reanimation. An interesting choice by the Ignika (which is the supposed source of his and the other Mahri’s mutation) but it got me thinking... (ie I was VERY bored at work).
Now again, this is not to be taken seriously, but after rereading the Into the Darkness podcast transcript again, something just really bugged me about the whole situation with Teridax and Matoro. So, Teridax’s goal was to blackmail Matoro into reanimating Tuyet, because she had remnants of the Nui-stone embedded in her armor (though apparently in the main universe, it wasn’t Nui-stone fragements), and the reason was...so he could bestow it on a Toa?
That got me to thinking just what this implies. We’re all fully aware of Teridax’s psychopathic ability to plan and prepare a thousand backup plans to his backup plans. We also know he has an invested interest in The Plan to take over the Matoran universe, but it can’t be achieved if Mata-nui dies. So, taking into account his tendency to have backup plans in stacks, could he have, say, predicted Matoro being given the Tryna, and thus, his plans for the Nui-stone were in fact to somehow sway Matoro to his side, give him the Nui-stone, and in the event Mata-nui dies, have Matoro harness the stone and, I don’t know, reanimate the husk? At least enough to allow Teridax to slip into the Core Processor and do what he needed to do, because as it stands, it SOUNDS like for him to even get into the GSR, Mata-nui HAD to die at least briefly.
And to me, it just doesn’t entirely add up. Or maybe I’m not remembering things correctly (it’s been A While since I read the books). Why would he want the Nui-stone to begin with? As far as I can tell, it’s used exclusively to enhance Toa.
He showed an unusual interest in Matoro, and I’m going to guess it’s because, one, Matoro is inherently linked to the Ignika for obvious reasons, and two, he has a mask that may or may not be of use to Teridax in some way if something goes wrong.
So, if given the Nui-stone, could Matoro have proved useful in reanimating Mata-nui? My guess is yes. In Tuyet’s hands, she apparently was able to essentially take over the Toa Empire Universe. If given that enhancement, Matoro probably could reanimate a massive, universe-sized robot with very little strain; at least long enough for Teridax to do whatever he needs to do.
On the flip side of things, there is also the possible reason why Matoro got the Tryna. The Inika/Mahri were mutated by the Ignika, and due to the Ignika’s sentience, I wouldn’t be surprised if it had chosen their masks from the get-go. So why the Tryna for Matoro? Why such an obscure, taboo mask?
Supposedly masks are a sort of nod to a trait of a Matoran/Toa's personality or ability, or perhaps at the least prove utility to their programmed profession. So, supposedly, masks align with one’s destiny. Matoro’s destiny is to die to revive Mata-nui. If we assume over-use of mask powers causes strain, we can assume if he tried to reanimate Mata-nui without a Nui-stone, he would probably die in the procees. But what would be the point? There is no utilitary reason for Matoro to have the Tryna that isn’t just symbolism (which is rife within the MU, but I digress). The other Mahri, on the other hand, all got masks they could utilize to their new enviroment. Jaller got echolocation, Hewkii got gravity powers, Hahli can mimic Rahi, Kongu can summon demons and Rahi and god knows what else, and Nuparu got stealth ninja powers. One could argue there’s A Lot of dead things in the ocean, but there is literally SO many other masks Matoro could have been given that would have been much more useful in The Pit.
So does the Tryna just imply his destiny is to revive someone (ie Mata-nui)? Or was he given the Tryna because, regardless of the Ignika and REGARDLESS of whether or not Matoro dies or if he has a Nui-stone, the Tryna would act as an end all contingency? I can't see it being the former, and while the latter is REALLY pushing it, it makes more sense. This may or may not also be supported by the fact that a contingency mask DOES exist, and that is the Ignika itself. It’s supposed to both be Mata-nui’s defibrillator, but it’s also a reset button.
I don’t know, it just feels very off to me, both Matoro’s mask and Teridax’s motivations for the Nui-stone. I can’t recall if it was ever expanded upon if he even had a Toa in mind to give the stone to, and if not, I doubt he would have gone to the trouble of finding it. That’s a HUGE detour to take when he’s on such a tight time crunch now.
Anyways, that’s gonna do it for me, so if anyone has any thoughts, discuss!

i think sumi is a rlly good inversion of akechi actually.
akechi hides his true self by being pleasant and agreeable, and sumi tries to do much the same. for akechi, its because he feels like revealing his true self will hinder his goals, and fears the retribution. for him the adopted personality is a curse he has to endure to get what he wants.
sumire is essentially forced to abandon her true self, but at her own desire. freedom from the burden of being herself is her end goal, working in the complete opposite direction to akechi.
between them is akiren, who strikes a balance between them. he never tries to abandon his true self, its able to come out in the metaverse and at times with morgana and the thieves. at the same time, he uses the same people pleaser tactics as the others whenever he talks to anyone, even the thieves. he seems comfortable with both though, happy to wear different masks in social situations but not wanting to shun his true self.
i think sumire's reaction to maruki revealing the truth is by far her best character moment. she's revealed to have such strong self hatred she'd prefer to just. not exist. and this doesn't go away, evem after rank 10, since if you take maruki's deal kasumi doesn't come back, sumire just becomes kasumi again (this kind of assumes that maruki's happiness thing takes into account the extremness of her self hatred, since it's not like anyone else transforms into someone else in his reality)
much like he takes away sumire's self hatred, maruki's deal removes akechi's external anger, turning him into the facsimile he acted as. maruki can't allow akechi's true anger and bitterness and trauma, so akechi's true self, that he wants to be, becomes that pleasant outward demeanour.
to conclude i guess i think sumire and akechi are good vessels to explore hatred, societal expectations and self acceptance. akechi cannot be himself because of his hatred, and how that conflicts with societies expectations. personal thoughts on societal and interpersonal expectations cause sumire to hate being sumire, and prevent her from accepting herswlf. (wow its the theme of the game. no way. sometimes p5 is coherent).
this is what sets them apart from the other thieves, who have generally accepted who they are and the fact that they will not fit into society in a conventional way. the royal trio forgo being themselves in order to fit more easily into society, letting society's expectations mold them into a shape that fits for their role.
this commentary would probably go deeper if i had more confidence and understanding on japanese societal norms, but from what i understand this seems relevant to japanese culture's collectivist tendencies, with regards to supressing your personality to fit in.

Lee! Yoriichi and Ler! Sumiyoshi and Suyako?? Pliss
Of course! In the manga/anime, Yoriichi showed a great approach to family! (Artist name is in the images) (I also added Sumire-)
Lers: Suyako, Sumiyoshi and Sumire Kamado
Lee: Yoriichi Tsugikuni
"After Yoriichi gave me his precious earrings, I thought I would never see him again... I felt that this gift marked a farewell... Am I wrong...?", Sumiyoshi thought, he was not sure what it had happened to his friend, they constantly talked through letters, but there was nothing more to it than that.
That was their communication until one day...
'Hey Sumiyoshi! Don't you know what I found on the way back home... Or rather... Who!', Suyako announced excitedly, pulling at the haori of her husband, who had his back turned. 'Is it a squirrel? Or is it maybe...'
'Hello... Sumiyoshi...', that voice... Sumiyoshi turned around quickly, shook his head and rubbed his eyes, he couldn't believe it, was he dreaming? 'What's wrong dear...? I thought you'd be happier to see Yoriichi-San... Maybe-?'
Suyako jumped to the side a little when Sumiyoshi rushed to hug her companion, smiling when she saw him hug Yoriichi, it had been a long time since she had seen them together.
After that hug, they invited him to stay, well, more like they forced him a little, his 'it's not necessary' was totally ignored by the couple. 'It's been a while... How have things been...? Anything new to tell?'
'I don't know... Everything has been a bit confusing, there are things that my mind needed to think better... And I apologize for that, for the way you hugged me and how you expressed yourself, it seemed like I worried you...Excuse me for that', Sumiyoshi patted his shoulder, assuring him that everything was fine.
For Sumiyoshi, seeing his friend again was more than enough. Besides, he wasn't the only one who had missed his presence. 'Dad!'
'Huh? Oh, what's wrong Sumire?'
'This is Sumire...? Wow... Did I really isolate myself for so long? The last time I saw her, she was just a baby, she's grown up a little...'
Sumire looked at him confused, she had never seen him before, although her parents always told her the story of how he saved them, she didn't know that it was about him.
'Sumire... Meet Yoriichi-San. You remember him, right? Your mother and I always tell you about him! Besides, he used to carry you when you were very little... I remember your little smile when you saw how he approached our house...', the little girl approached, bopping Yoriichi's nose and then grabbing his cheeks with curiosity
'She seems to like you hahaha! Sumire has also missed you a lot, she used to wait for you every day and she would get sad when she saw that you didn't arrive... But we never let her forget about you!'
'Did she really do that...? Forgive me, little girl... I didn't mean to do it', he sighed and sat the youngest on his lap, stroking her head and looking away.
Sumiyoshi frowned and motioned to his daughter, who nodded laughing. 'He-hey! Su-Sumihire!'
'Ooooh, is that a giggle you just heard~? Hmmmm? It is not? Then why do I see a smile on your face~?', he laughed, thus encouraging the little girl to continue.
Sumire's hands began to rise Yoriichi's neck, smiling while he himself tried not to wrinkle his neck to let her continue. 'Ooooh? Aren't you avoiding stopping Sumire? How adorable!'
'I-It's juhust... I do-dohon't wahant to h-hurt her! Sumihiyohoshi! Stahahap heher!'
'Mmmm... Why should I? You obviously like this! Come on Sumire, give your father some space! Here I come Yoriichi~!
Yoriichi didn't even try to get away from him, his only attempt was to raise his hand while asking him not to come closer, but that only encouraged his friend to join his daughter. 'Wahahahaihit! Sumiyoshi plehahasehehe!'
'Mmmm? Please what? Be more specific Yoriichi-San! Do you want us to continue? That you want?! Did you hear that Sumi?! He wants us to continue!', the little girl laughed and nodded, this time she lowered her hands and began to press on his ribs.
Both she and her father laughed as they noticed how Yoriichi moved his arms that were covering his ribs away and tried to keep them away.
His excuse was 'not wanting to hurt them', but they both knew he was just too shy to admit he was having fun. 'What's happening? Have I heard some laughter? Oooooh! Is it tickling time?! What fun!'
'Suhuyahahakoho-Sahahahan! Stohohop thehehehem!! W-wahahaihit!! Nohohot yohohou tohohoho!! Thihis is so unfahahair!!'
The tickling continued, none of the three moved from the spot they had chosen to tickle, Suyako had his neck, Sumiyoshi his hips and Sumire his ribs.
'He's laughing a lot, isn't he? But maybe not enough... What if we try to make him really laugh?!', there was no need to convince them, they both agreed.
Suyako lowered her hands to his thighs, squeezing them gently, but it wasn't the reaction she was looking for; Sumiyoshi tried his knees, all he earned was a squeal.
Apparently they could only get him to laugh up to that volume, his laughter didn't increase!
'Mmmm... His sides! Dad mom! Help!', they both looked at what the little girl was pointing at.
No one had noticed that Yoriichi was covering his sides, at the moment when Sumiyoshi had decided to go for his hips, to avoid having his sides tickled, he decided to choose to cover them. 'Oooh! Good observation! Honey, do we do the honors~?'
'With great pleasure!'
'W-wait... Let's talk about this!'
There was no way, Sumiyoshi and Suyako took Yoriichi's hands away from his tummy, thus giving Sumire the opportunity to make him scream, or at least try to...
'HEHEHEY!! O-OKAHAHAY YOHOHOU GOHOHOT MEHEHE!! YOU CAHAHAN STOHOHOP NOHOHOW!!'
'Stop? Hmmm... Well, we'll stop, with some conditions~', Yoriichi looked confused.
What did he mean by "conditions"?
'The first is that you must admit that you like this!'
'HUH?! BUHUHUT-!! AHAHAHAHA!!! OKAHAHAHAY!! I LIHIKEHEHE EHEHEHEHE THIHIHIS!!'
'Hmmm, what exactly is "this"? Be more specific Yoriichi-San!'
Suyako laughed and playfully pushed her husband, after a while of laughing, they both stopped. 'That is better! You have a very nice laugh, Yoriichi-San!'
Sumiyoshi nodded, walking over to his friend to make sure he was okay.
'And what is the second request...?'
'Smile more often or else...-!'
'You'll tickle me... I get it... I'll try to comply...', Yoriichi stood up, using his fingers to form a smile for them.
Definitely, both Suyako and Sumiyoshi missed that smile...
