My Cup Runneth Over - Oct 12/19

Up at 6 this morning to get an early start on the first day in Egypt that I planned myself. After breakfast I headed off early (just after 7:30) and walked about 2.5 km to my first stop at the Mahmoud Khalil Museum on the West Bank of the Nile, so it is actually in Giza. Walking may not have been my best choice, as rush hour smog in Cairo is even worse than I experienced in Beijing, Delhi or Bangkok and I arrived short of breathe despite a leisurely pace. The museum was the home of Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil Pasha and his French wife Emiline Lock from 1915 until their deaths (him in 1953, her in 1960) when it was bequeathed to the state and became a museum (with a brief interlude as the office of Egyptian President Anwaar Sadat). In addition to a valuable collection of French and Chinese ceramics, it also houses a huge collection of late 19th Century art which apparently is dominated by the impressionists (most of whom they knew) including Renoir, Monet, Lautrec, Rodin and Gauguin that were bargains at the time (Renoir for 200£E). Despite this amazing collection, I understand that it is only rarely visited by tourists. Its most well known work, the Poppy Flower by Van Gogh ($50 Million+ US), disappeared in 1977 and was found 10 years later in Kuwait. It was stolen again in 2010, apparently an inside job by officials in the antiquities ministry that I understand are still in jail. I have been unable to find out whether the painting was returned. Anyway, despite the website indicating that the museum was open today from 8 am, I discovered on arrival that it is currently a construction site and closed indefinitely. Once again, as in golf, Norm’s meticulous planning does not always lead to successful execution😬. Still it was not a total failure as I did not see a single westerner for over an hour and felt like I might have escaped my tourist bubble, if only for a moment.

Disappointed, I turned around and headed for Zamalek (4km) an upscale neighbourhood of foreign expats and wealthy Egyptians on Gezira Island. On the way, I reached an area with high hedges and a wrought iron fence that appeared to be a beautiful park. Peaking through holes I could see tennis courts, a track and even an 18 hole golf course (apparently played on only 9 fairways?). I searched for an entrance only to discover that this was the very private 150 acre Gezira Sporting Club built in 1882. Originally restricted to British Officers, it now has about 40,000 Egyptian members, but I am still just the riffraff and was left to peer through the fence with envy. Once I reached the main drag of Zamalek, I spent some time “licking the windows” (as the French say) before stopping at a very nice coffee shop/bakery for a croissant and the best latte I have had since leaving home, including those I had in London. I sat for a while watching life go by and noticed a number of Europeans, none of whom appeared to be tourists. Instead they seemed to be locals (albeit wealthy ones) just going about their daily routine.

As I sat contentedly drinking my latte, I also browsed through my online guidebook only to discover that my planned last stop was scheduled to close in about an hour. I quickly took my life in my hands and hopped into a local cab after bargaining the asking price from 50£E to 30£E for a trip of 5-6km. How we arrived at this price is a complete mystery to me as, once were on our way, I discovered that the driver had no idea where we were going and spoke no English. After a lot of hand waving and a couple of lengthy detours, my GPS finally saved the day. This also gave me time to calculate the conversion rate in my head and discover that I had been in tough negotiation over $1.50. On arrival, I took a note from Lu-Anne’s book and gave the driver the original 50£E ($4) ask, to much smiling and thanks.

The Al-Azhar Mosque is the largest in Cairo and the only place on the highlights list in “Top Ten - Cairo & the Nile” that I had yet to see. It was well worth the effort and was a beautiful and tranquil oasis in the chaos that is Cairo. After spending perhaps an hour, I crossed the street back to the Khan Al-Khalili market that I visited yesterday. I spent some time browsing the stalls and avoiding being trampled by the herds of bus tourists that seem to move in packs. My only purchase about a half a pound of fresh cumin from a shop filled with locals, as I have just run out of the supply we brought home from Marrakech. One more Turkish coffee at Fishwari’s and then a taxi back to the hotel. This time I did not even try to barter down the 50£E asking price (no Cairo taxi has an actual operating meter) as I was sure that any reduction would be far more valuable to the driver than to me. I was however warned repeatedly that, had I hopped in without at least agreeing to a price, I could easily have been charged 100£E or more on arrival at my destination.

While it is only 35C today, I will rest through the heat of the day and venture out for dinner around 7 or 8 based on a couple recommendations from yesterday’s guide, Beeko. Tomorrow I am out of the hotel at 6 am for another early flight, this time to London

So showed coworker my new tattoo. He’s got full sleeves and was like “Awesome!” but also said “huh. And surprising. Wouldn’t have expected you to get a trek tattoo.”

And I said, “well it has a lot of meaning for me” and he said cool, will have to tell me sometime when we aren’t holding up the line at lunch.

And it was weird as a statement but then I reflected I don’t always express my geeky interests. He doesn’t know. He knows I was fangirling SWTOR and dresssed as Rey for halloween but didn’t know about how I watched TOS as a wee little Aylaa who of course liked Uhura because she was the girl. Who thought spock and kirk were funny because I could understand the 1960s style production as slapstick comedy and missed the groundbreaking aspects.

He didn’t know I discovered TNG in 5th grade. He didn’t know how much I liked Deanna because her hair was flawless and she sat on the bridge and was kinda and embodied all the caring I did not get from my peers, or Beverly because she was a doctor and awesome or Tasha because she kicked ass. He didn’t know that I liked Wesley because he was me- the too-smart kid who often saw issues with what adults did. but unlike me, Wesley was given agency and respect. He was wish fulfillment and I was at the age he was intended for. It was heartbreaking to grow up and go online and find that “everyone hated Wesley.” I didn’t. He was me.

He doesn’t know that when Voyager came out I could see myself again in Kathyrn Janeway and in Torres and later in Seven. He doesn’t know that I found my voice telling relatives “Yeah so, I’m into star trek. and Scifi. And babylon 5 and the matrix. Can you maybe not give me clothing or guess at what I want? I’d really like a subscription to Star Trek Magazine or trek or star wars books.” And that when I found my voice, I asked for Star Trek.

He doesn’t know that in Trek I found Hope and understanding and celebration of differences. I found a humanity no longer at war with itself - because in 3rd grade we went to war in iraq and kuwait, there was war in the balkans, there were terrifying things all over. A post-scarcity society where money didn’t matter - because money was a finite, hard to acquire resource that allowed you to have a leisurely lifestyle and enabled you to go on vacations or get the things you wanted and a lack of which had turned my father into a 6-days-a-week workaholic because he had a family and employees relying on him. Status was gained by how well you do the thing you love, not by looks or by ownership. Learning was valued. Discovery was valued. Exploration for its own sake was of value. Science was good.

Star Wars gave me the Black and White of Good and Evil. The simplicity of the heroes Journey with robots and lasers as a skin. Babylon 5 gave me a future where we’ve gone to the stars... and met ourselves. Where Humanity is one of many races and when we get to space, we still want mom’s lasagna. it was real but forward thinking. Still hopeful but scrappy. Stargate gave me humanity holding on to the rollercoaster by our fingernails, with pluck, determination and teamwork we survived. I loved these science fiction shows but Got something very different from each and I loved the variety.

But Trek gave me Hope. Even when they went to war, it was about being better than ourselves in an honest and not jaded way. Trek was there first.

He only knows that we worked professionally on a Trek-related product for a few years. It was a job to him and he thought it was okay. I was a fan. I don’t think he understood that.

He doesn’t know what Kathryn Janeway meant to me, a female geek, seeing a woman, a scientist, leading a crew. He doesn’t know that TNG got me through the end of Elementary school and the beginning of middle school when children were cruel. He doesn’t know that Voyager saw me through the transition from middle school to highschool and then into the beginning of college. He doesn’t know that I, and many other freshmen, went hunting for a TV in the dorms those first few weeks of college because Voyager was ending. He doesn’t know we sat together and watched them come home. He doesn’t know about me dragging my entire family to Philly so I could go spend the weekend at a convention and meet most of the cast of Voyager. He doesn’t know it was *my* ship and I chased the perfect season for seven years and while I never found it, I treasure the characters and my fan experiences. He doesn’t know that I am collecting the cast’s autographs on my copy of Endgame II (Beltran is the one I am missing).

He doesn’t know of the friends I have made because Star Trek was a shared love. He doesn’t know I have a group of lifelong people I can always go back to, because we were on a Trek/Wars BBoard RPG. He doesn’t know I have met many other wonderful, fantastic and creative people, most women like me!!! Who Like Scifi!!!!!!! He doesn’t know I started writing long-form fiction beginning with Voyager fanfic. He doesn’t know Trek books got me through when I was too young for “adult novels” but hated the YA offerings of the early 90s. He doesn’t know it was where I found I had a voice. He doesn’t know when children were cruel, Deanna was kind, Torres was tough and Seven was smart. He doesn’t know.

Yes, I love star wars and babylon 5 and Stargate. And I have met people through those and was impacted by my love of those as well.

But Trek was first.

I’ll always have the friends I’ve made. I’ll always have the time I worked on the Trek property I did. That is something that isn’t going to change. So that is why I got the starfleet symbol, Coworker dude.

Rolls-Royce’s newly appointed and Dubai-based Regional Director César Habib takes up the reins at the illustrious marque during a propitious era. Phantom, Ghost, Wraith and Dawn models are well established leaders in their field, and they’re now joined by Cullinan – the first four-wheel drive car in the marque’s history.

As 2018 draws to a close our Managing Director, Zeina Mokaddam, sat with César and mulled over his first end-of-term report.

Where are the unchanging elements and ethos that define every Rolls-Royce that simply had to be carried forward to the Cullinan?

Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce like never before. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”, he could have had Cullinan in mind.

Rolls-Royce patrons couldn’t find what they really wanted in the SUV market. Cullinan is a response to fulfilling their demand as they do not accept limitations or compromises in their lives.

When you look at Cullinan you instantly realise that you are standing before a high bodied Rolls-Royce. Cullinan shares the DNA of all Rolls-Royce vehicles like the “Magic Carpet Ride”, exterior lines and interior design. Inside, the cabin of Cullinan combines authentic Rolls-Royce luxury with simple, symmetrical functionality to express the car’s inherent strength.

It’s taller than the automobiles that may be considered ‘competitors’. What’s the secret behind the Cullinan’s extraordinary stability on all surfaces?

At Rolls-Royce, we strive for perfection every day. 2018 has definitely seen some remarkable innovations, the most astounding of which being the first Rolls-Royce sports utility vehicle. The Rolls-Royce Collective have also revolutionised the iconic starlight headliner as well as the interior wood veneer with the Wraith Luminary Collection; indeed, the illuminated wood panels as well as the shooting star headliner redefine the ambience that surrounds Rolls- Royce occupants. Nevertheless, each motor car is distinctively Rolls- Royce – from the exterior geometry to the fine materials adorning the interior and the hand-crafted Spirit of Ecstasy, patrons are bound to instantly recognise the level of luxury characteristic to the marque.

In September we published an article by Torsten Müller-Ötvös where he wrote about bespoke. One comment he made was “With so many Rolls-Royce customers demanding unique, one-off motor cars, we did not want to be tied to inherited architecture from our parent company, BMW.” Perhaps you could expand on this thought a little.

The Architecture of Luxury is a very good example here, it is an entirely new, specially engineered aluminium architecture that will inform production of all future Rolls-Royces.

Cullinan is the second Rolls-Royce to benefit from the new architecture. The Architecture of Luxury is an exclusively engineered

technology for Rolls-Royce and stands as a significant statement of intent and confidence in the success of the next great chapter in the marque’s contemporary renaissance.

Unlike mass-luxury manufacturers this has no relation with the marque’s parent company BMW Group and will serve to afford the marque with unprecedented levels of flexibility throughout the second chapter of its renaissance.

Which areas of your motor cars are most often requested to be ‘Bespoke’?

Commissioning a Rolls-Royce motor car transcends the need of mere mobility; the commissioning process is a memorable experience in itself as Rolls-Royce endows patrons with the freedom to express their interests, passions and lifestyles on a blank canvas. In light of virtually unlimited choices, the final creation is an entirely unique Rolls-Royce motor car that guards a special place in one’s heart. Stories are often told throughout the motor car, from specially created embroidery, to paint, which has been embellished with fine materials, such as gold, silver and crushed diamonds.

Some patrons choose to adorn their interiors with exotic leathers and precious gemstones – recent examples include sapphires, emeralds and diamonds! However, Bespoke is not only an aesthetic revolution, it can also be an engineering reconfiguration. The order books for Cullinan are also exceptionally strong and already stretch well into 2019. Phantom is the pinnacle of Rolls-Royce and it is doing well. Ghost Wraith, Dawn and their Black Badge variants are all in a very good shape.
