I doubt that an older Thomas Barrow (S4-S6) would have voluntarily told anyone about his sexuality after all that has happened.
But the idea of a young Thomas Barrow, arriving at Downton Abbey, kicked out of his parents house for his sexuality, being in dire need of a friend, would have probably one day told Ms. o‘Brien.
And the idea of a young Thomas putting this very dark and dangerous secret into the hands of a woman he trusted only for her to use it against him and almost getting him kicked out and into prison is so deeply horrible and disgusting to me.
Because a young Thomas Barrow would not have been so careful around people. Because a young Thomas Barrow probably still had trust in others.
Only for him to have this trust shattered into pieces from a person he thought was kind of his friend.
I'm obsessed with that one s3 deleted scene, O'Brien is like "how is the earl" and Thomas is like "well his daughter just died suddenly so I guess he's sad or something idk" and O'Brien is like "wow that sucks, anyway do you think Jimmy is gay, or..?"
ask anyone who knows me and knows the downton abbey lore (so like, my parents) and they'll tell you i am an absolute thomas barrow apologist, it has been something we've disagreed over plenty of times, idk i just love him. he is one conniving son of a bitch but hes still more than that, he got his mf redemption arc and he deserved it. i usually only rewatch the films, and the last few seasons of the show, due to this however, i often forget just how bitchy he was, like how steve harrington is a fan favorite but because of that i forget the extent of his dick behavior in s1 (also i just never watch that season)
the thing i used to hate most that thomas (and tbf obrien) did was continuously try to sack bates, succeeding at one point, and just overall being a complete ass towards him but i completely didnt remember how he led daisy on just to kick william in the gut
FUCK him for that. one of my fav moments is actually when he dances with daisy while william plays piano, because despite how different they all are and the negative feelings between him, obrien and literally everyone else they all laugh and have a good time for a moment and its sweet, but mf knows daisy has this little crush on him and leads her on despite the fact that he just doesnt even like her normally, hes literally gay. disregarding the probability that she will be hurt (i mean not that he cared at the time) just to fuck with william and for what??
one of the reasons i dont completely hate obrien and thomas in the earlier seasons is because i feel like that most of their actions have an explanation besides "just because". mostly they arent being complete jerks just to Be Jerks (not that it makes their actions and behavior any more acceptable, and ofc they say rude things a lot just because but here im talking about their scheming and various ploys) but this, i literally dont see any more reason besides fuck with william and its not just william who faces consequences because of it and when bates shoved him up against the wall to give him a mind to shut the fuck up i was like "yesss tell that bastard"
Old Fashioned - Phyllis Baxter/Cora Crawley/Sarah O'Brien
A/N: Part 2 of Day 4 for @fluffbruary
“New beau? Baxter?”
The question is soft, lightly spoken and Cora glances up at the sound of Phyllis’ sigh. The woman looks deeply embarrassed, timid even and Cora rises to move closer, noting the way Baxter’s eyes shone even as she steps back, away.
“No m’lady.”
A pause then.
“You might… know who they are… however.”
“Oh?”
A pause then.
“Is O’Brien back?”
A telling blush spreads over Baxter’s cheeks and Cora smiles, moving to press a light kiss to Baxter’s hairline, her voice soft.
“Go to her…. Bring her home.”
People would never know that Cora was deeply in love with Baxter, not for years yet, but O’Brien had always clearly had her heart so nobody was much surprised when Cora asked O’Brien back in her life, free from service. Later, much later, Cora’s gentle calm would settle both women’s nerves when Baxter brought O’Brien home, the three alone overnight, free at last to love one another.
Thomas: 'No, I'm not going to help your nephew climb the carrier ladder faster just because he's your nephew. I had to work for all this by myself as well.'
"Kill them with kindness" wrong. Pretend to kill them with kindness. Act like everything is fine between you two and wait. Wait until a new footman is hired and they start very obviously crushing on that footman. Then tell them that the footman obviously has a crush on them as well, while telling the footman that he must not reject any flirting he may receive. Keep this up until the inevitable happens and they make a move on the footman. Oh, and they are both men and this is the post-Edwardian era, keep up. Best case scenario they kiss him, he is not happy about it and someone else witnesses it. Even better if that someone else is you nephew. Now convince your nephew to report the whole sordid affair to the butler. Now they're getting fired, but your mission is not done. Tell the footman everyone will think he is gay unless he blackmails the butler into giving them a bad reference. Now they are getting kicked out, desperate and alone and no one can help them. Ohhh. Doesn't it just warm your cockles?
The feeling I had from last time I watched Downton Abbey was that O'Brien left in the middle of the night for India because she was threatened by Bates "knowing her secret" (he doesn't know but Barrow gave him a keyword to make think he did). But actually there's a year happening between 3.08 and 3.09, so it's probably part of it but certainly not all of it.
If it's not all of it, there's probably a lot of it that's come from the fact, as she did, that she fancied a change and would have loved to go to India. And in a way I'm kinda glad she got to leave to a place she wanted to go to, not just because she was fleeing from her past.
