but in the dark light of his room, with inej leaning against the edge of his bed, kaz knows that this is not one of the times he can change the world in his favor. their relationship is on a precipice, it can't continue unless he gives more. he can sense it in the air, her boat was set to leave the next day. she's offering him an olive branch, a chance to give her a reason to stay.

for the first time since he'd climbed up from the water and taken a new name, he takes the plunge.
