GJ and ZZH Updates — July 02-08
<<< previous week || all posts || following week >>>
This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.
This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or additions. :)
[Glossary of names and terms] [Masterlist of my posts about the situation with Zhang Zhehan]
07-02 → A TikTok account called Ocean Zhang posted an extremely cringey video of Zhang Sanjian dancing with one of the ugly dolls they’re obviously having trouble selling. The account was found to have been made on 06-15 at an IP address located in Taiwan. The IP of the video was California. [source] Given how TikTok’s algorithm works, it’s best to completely avoid it.
→ Gong Jun made it to Jay Chou’s concert in Haikou and even got to sing with him! Videos: [1] [2] [Translation of their conversation] #Gong Jun Jay Chou chorus Hair Like Snow# got on Weibo entertainment hotsearch and #GongJun trended on Twitter.  Fan Observations:  -  He was wearing the Wooyoungmi shirt again.  -  Hair Like Snow was mentioned by Zhang Zhehan as one of his favourite Jay Chou songs, which he had sung himself at a school talent show. The album that it’s on, November’s Chopin, released on 2005-11-01.
→ Gong Jun posted a video of himself at the concert. Caption: “I’m! so! ha! ppy!”
Tumblr media
(photo from the fansite Elaine&Pipi)
07-03 → The Legend of AnLe Weibo account posted a video of behind the scenes footage. Caption: “The boat of love makes waves at first sight?! Ren AnLe @Dear Dilireba made a bold move to Han Ye @ Gong Jun Simon, as if he heard someone's heart beating in disorder!” Shortly after, they also posted eight promotional stills of the main cast.
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted three promotional stills of Gong Jun in Legend of AnLe. Caption: “Qingming is like a sweet spring, Ye Ran is like a god, hope to meet with his highness @ Gong Jun Simon soon.”
07-04 → #TheLegendofAnle trended on Twitter.
→ Fresh posted a commercial featuring Gong Jun. (1129 kadian)
07-05 → The Instagram posted song lyrics.
→ Fresh posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun. (1129 kadian)
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted a vlog of him at the Jay Chou concert. Caption: “There is also a chorus without mic, and the enthusiastic audience @ Gong Jun Simon has a full record of the concert!”
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted a douyin of him singing at the concert. Caption: “@ Gong Jun Simon is confident! (We also have a solo cam!)” (17:05 timestamp and 1:29 long video, if you want to make a 51129 kadian out of that)
07-06 → The Instagram posted pictures of Polaroids.
→ #ZhangZhehan trended on Twitter.
→ The teashop was fined 129k RMB for excessive packaging in violation of environmental protection laws, violation of food safety laws, engaging in food production they do not have a license for, and failure to correctly label food quantity on packaging, with Chen Bingjun (Chen Liying’s daughter) fined 11k RMB personally.
07-07 → Gong Jun reposted a post from Xinhua News in remembrance of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Added caption: “Don’t forget the national insult, remember the history, and use the deeds of heroes and martyrs to inspire our generation to act bravely!” His studio did the same, added caption: “Follow the right path and strive for self-improvement. Always remember the spirit of the martyrs, and may peace remain forever!”
→ A photographer, Xie Huailiang, made a Xiao Hong Shu post reminiscing about a photoshoot he did with Gong Jun in 2016, saying that Gong Jun hasn’t been changed by the industry and is still very caring and hardworking. His post mentioned Word of Honor as the point Gong Jun rose to fame. Fan Observation: The photographer also previously did a shoot with Zhang Zhehan, and did not delete his post of this after 813.
07-08 → Another Zhang Sanjian TikTok video with content similar to the previous one.
Additional Reading: → Hidden Strike, the Jackie Chan and John Cena action-comedy that Gong Jun played a small role* in in 2018, is now showing in theatres in the US. It will be releasing on American Netflix on 07-28. *He is reportedly only in about the first 20 minutes. → Offline promotions for Legend of AnLe have begun. It seems it really is finally coming soon. 🤞 → Subs are finally being made for Go Fighting! season 9! At the time of this post the first 3 episodes are subbed. [playlist]

YouTube suggested this to me. It's by CapitalQ
This is my attempt to document all of the musical/lyrical/poetic references and samples in released They Might Be Giants & solo project songs. This project has been a few months in the making, and I hope you enjoy and discover some great music to listen to! Thanks to the research of hundreds of fans on TMBW.net for making this project possible, as well as the great work by projects like the Don’t Let’s Start Podcast. Many of these references will likely never be confirmed by TMBG, but I’ve tried including ones that feel intentional. Non-TMBG clips I’ve included in this video are meant to represent the most well-known version of each song (that the Johns were more likely to have been exposed to), and I’ve noted the original writers of each included song in the end credits. The years I’ve specified for these songs are typically when the song was first released by the relevant performer. Some clips have been further edited for timing/content to highlight relevant parts of songs. Dates for Dial-A-Song tracks are best guesses from TMBW. Covers such as “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” and “New York City” are not included in this video, as they would form another video just as long - which may be coming.

Advert Alchemy: The Jingle
Tumblr media
In this series, Squideo is breaking down the eight key ingredients to turn your advertising content into gold! In the last edition of Advert Alchemy, we examined the importance of location when releasing your marketing campaign to the world. This week, we’re looking at the effectiveness of a jingle.
This short, catchy advertising technique is similar to a slogan except it’s set to a tune. Unlike a soundtrack, a jingle is only a few seconds long but they can wriggle into your customers’ memory – ensuring they remember your product for a long time!
The Power of an Earworm
An earworm is a song or melody that keeps repeating in your head. Some of the most commonly reported earworms are songs like It’s a Small World (Disney), Who Let the Dogs Out? (Baha Men), Gangnam Style (Psy), Karma Chameleon (Culture Club) and YMCA (The Village People).
A truly well-crafted jingle has the potential to become one of these insanely catchy earworms. Before we dive into some of the best jingles to grace our screens, let’s explore how to create a jingle.
Keep it simple. In the examples below, no jingle is longer than thirteen words. The shorter it is, the easier it is for your audience to remember! Use repetition, rhyme and keep your language simple.
Choose the right music. Make sure it has the right tempo and speed for the voiceover artist to sing along to. Do your market research as well to discover which music genre your audience will respond to.
Know your product. What is the unique selling point you want your jingle to convey? Do similar products use marketing jingles? How can you set yourself apart from the competition?
Jingle Jamming
Think you’re ready to create a jingle of your own? Before you do, look through Squideo’s top ten picks for the best advertising jingles. Consider what these jingles say about the brand. Which ones would work for your brand?
01. Haribo
Kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of Haribo.
Jingles are perfect for child-targeted advertising. These catchy songs catch their attention, ready to be repeated to their parents nonstop. The German confectionary company Haribo has used this jingle across all of its English-speaking markets for over twenty years, making it instantly recognisable to people of all ages.
Tumblr media
02. McDonald’s
Ba-da-ba-ba-baaa… I’m lovin’ it.
First used in 2003, this jingle was implemented at a time when sales for this enormous American fast-food chain was in trouble. Its stock prices had dropped and they needed to attract more customers – fast! German advertising firm Heye & Partner created this simple jingle which was rolled out internationally. It was only meant to play in McDonald’s adverts for two years… twenty years later, the jingle is still going strong.
Tumblr media
03. Cadbury’s Fudge
A finger of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat.
To a younger generation, Cadbury’s most iconic advert is likely the Gorilla campaign which ran in 2007. Go back a few decades, however, and this jingle for Cadbury’s Fudge bar created one of the most popular advertising campaigns of the 1970s. There is a longer version which was played as a song in some adverts, however this shorter jingle remains more memorable.
Tumblr media
04. Hastings Direct
0800 00 1066.
Jingle’s usually contain one of three key pieces of information – the company name; the product; or how to get in touch. In 2005, Hasting’s Direct impressed their telephone number upon a nation – making 0800 00 1066 almost as well-known as 999. By choosing a familiar date (1066, the year of the Battle of Hastings which is taught to most Britons at school), half the work was done for them. Through repetition and the use of a catchy tune performed by their mascot Harry Hastings, the full phone number was soon memorised. Very clever!
Tumblr media
05. Compare the Market
Compare the meerkat; compare the market. Simples!
First launched in 2009 on British and Australian television, the advertisers behind this campaign were dedicated to its success from the get-go. Creating a Facebook and Twitter account for their mascot Aleksandr the meerkat, and a fictional website for comparethemeerkat.com, the advert series runs to this day. And at the end of each advert comes this memorable jingle.
Tumblr media
06. Calgon
Washing machines live longer with Calgon.
Whether or not the statement made by this jingle is true – trust us, there’s been a lot of debate over the years – the memorability certainly created a huge boom for Calgon sales. Despite Which? making a complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency in 2011 over the validity of its marketing claim, the jingle is still used in their adverts thirty years on from its introduction. A true credit to its effectiveness.
Tumblr media
07. Lilt
With a totally tropical taste.
Launched in 1975, the drink soon became associated with its jingle thanks to some memorable advertising campaigns that ran in the 1980s and 90s, including the popular “Lilt Man.” Unfortunately, in February 2023, it was announced by Lilt’s owners, Coca Cola, that the drink would be replaced by ‘Fanta Pineapple and Grapefruit.’ We’ll certainly be sad to see the last of these adverts but glad the tropical taste survives.
Tumblr media
08. Toys ‘R’ Us
I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us kid.
This jingle for Toys ‘R’ Us, which was used in the 1980s and 90s, and was co-written by the crime novelist James Patterson. That’s an interesting piece of trivia for your next quiz night! This memorable line was produced by the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. The idea was to create a simple jingle that children could easily memorise and sing along with when it came on the television. It was later extended into a song.
Tumblr media
09. PC World
Where in the world? PC World.
Considering the brand no longer exists, it’s a testament to the power of a jingle that it is still remembered long after the company it represented. After its merger with Curry’s, ‘Curry’s PC World’ still used the jingle for a time in its new adverts, clearly recognising a useful marketing tool when they saw it. Removing the PC World name in 2021, the only trace left of this former retail chain is a jingle that refuses to leave the head of anyone who ever heard it.
Tumblr media
10. Cadbury’s Smash
For mash get Smash.
As the second Cadbury jingle to enter the list, it really goes to show this company knows what it’s doing! Launched in 1969, Smash is a brand of instant mashed potatoes – although it is no longer owned by Cadbury. Cadbury introduced the iconic Smash Martians in 1974 to promote their product through a catchy jingle. It was so memorable that in 2005 it was voted the UK’s most popular advert. The Martians even received their own fan mail while the advert was aired!

The tour will go on-sale to the public this Friday, February 9th at 10AM local time. Full tour dates listed below. For 20 years The Decemberists have been one of the most original, daring, and thrilling American rock bands. Founded in the year 2000 when singer, songwriter, and guitarist Colin Meloy moved from Montana to Portland, Oregon and met bassist Nate Query, keyboardist Jenny Conlee, and guitarist Chris Funk, The Decemberists’ distinctive brand of hyperliterate folk-rock set them apart from the start with the release of their debut EP 5 Songs in 2001. After making their full-length debut with Castaways and Cutouts in 2002, the band signed with Kill Rock Stars for the release of the acclaimed albums Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) and Picaresque (2005), which was produced by Chris Walla. The 2004 EP The Tain – an 18-minute single-track epic – made the band’s grand creative ambitions clear.   Around this time the band’s permanent line-up fell into place with the arrival of drummer John Moen, and they made the unexpected leap to Capitol Records for their first major label album in 2006. Fans’ concerns of whether the band would alter their trademark sound quickly vanished when they delivered their most ambitious and audacious record to date in The Crane Wife, a song cycle produced by Walla and Tucker Martine (who would become a longtime creative partner) that added elements of ‘70s prog, hard rock and even quasi-disco to their palette. The album was met by wide acclaim from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, SPIN, Stereogum, and was named Best New Music by Pitchfork.   Three years later, The Hazards of Love – a full-length concept album based on Meloy’s idea for a stage musical - was a Top 20 hit. In 2011, they topped themselves yet again with their first #1 album, The King Is Dead, which featured the GRAMMY-nominated song “Down By The Water.” After their 2015 album What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World, which included the #1 AAA radio hit “Make You Better,” The Decemberists changed up… https://chorus.fm/news/the-decemberists-burial-ground/

"Brand New Cairo Blues Part 2" By Pierce Crask from Chicago Acoustic Underground on Vimeo.
Chicago-based singer-songwriter Pierce Crask, accompanied by his guitar and harmonica, and drawing from influences such as Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Greg Brown, and Chris Smither has been entertaining audiences professionally since 1999.
In addition to folk, country, and blues, Pierce’s love of rock and roll acts such as Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, and the Grateful Dead led him to form his band, The Falling Martins, with songwriter/bassist Rich Wooten and pianist Paul Tervydis in 2001. To date, the band has released six albums: Falling Martins(2004), The Newest Ghost Town(2005), Nostalgia Train(2006), Live at The Old Rock House(2008), Shining Bright(2009), and Highway 61 Northbound Blues(2012). Critics said: “Pierce Crask hits the lyrical nail on the head”(Playback STL), “This is an extraordinary band producing elegant roots rock tinged with blues and country, with slide guitar and imaginative keys”(Ruta 66 Magazine in Spain) and “Pierce Crask may very well be this town’s Randy Newman”(Riverfront Times).
Pierce released his debut solo album, The Road To Millstadt, in 2007, and the follow-up Black Label in 2008. 2012 saw the release of Live at The Shaved Duck to great fan and audience response.
It was that same great response to his instrumental compositions that lead Pierce to record The Pierce Crask Instrumental EP in 2015. it features Pierce on 6 string, 12 string, nylon string and resonator guitar on 6 original tracks and a cover of The Beatles’ Norwegian Wood.
Pierce’s most recent effort is a self-titled 5 song solo EP co-produced with R.Scott Bryan (Sheryl Crow, Allman-Betts Band), and a new full-length album is in the works for early 2021.
Pierce plays about 300 dates a year, either solo or with the band, in all types of settings, from living rooms to festivals. Search

Hydra - Selftitled (UK Album 1974)
Based in the southern states of America, hard rock band Hydra formed in the early 70s around a line-up of Wayne Bruce (vocals, guitar), Spencer Kirkpatrick (guitar), Orville Davis (bass) and Steve Pace (drums). Signed to the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker Band’s record label, Capricorn Records, they made their debut in 1974 with a self-titled collection that drew heavily on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s southern boogie tradition, but also added elaborate pop hooks and disciplined rhythmic codas. Songs such as ‘Glitter Queen’ won them a fervent fanbase, though the subsequent Land Of Money, a more abrasive collection, was less successful. By the advent of Rock The World Davis had departed to join Rex and the resultant instability stalled the group’s progress.
Hydra is an American Southern rock band founded in the late 1960s by Spencer Kirkpatrick (guitar), Wayne Bruce (vocals and guitar), and Steve Pace (drums). In 1977, it became a three-piece band (with Wayne Bruce now on bass) and the band broke up later that year. It released three albums, Hydra (1974), Land of Money (1975) and Rock The World (1977). In 2005, the band reunited for two shows (with Vickery on bass). A live album, Hydra: Live After All These Years was released.
Pace and Kirkpatrick first played together in 1968 in the band Strange Brew. Wayne Bruce was playing with the band Nickelodian and accepted the offer to join Pace and Kirkpatrick in the short-lived Noah Mayflower. These three remained together in the band Osmosis until 1969 when, after enlisting a succession of bassists, Hydra finally emerged with the inclusion of Trip Burgess in 1970, and later Orville Davis in 1971. Orville remained with Hydra on their first two LP's before leaving the group to join the hard rock outfit Rex and then briefly Starz. Hydra's reputation as a solid live act in the Atlanta, Georgia area began to spread and the band expanded their territory. They began supporting major internationally known acts in concert. They have been referred to[by whom?] as the first heavy southern rock band.
The band signed a recording contract with Capricorn Records in 1973 and released a self-titled album Hydra in 1974. In 1975, Land of Money followed. The producer Dan Turbeville used a horn section (without the band's knowledge) on the first album and musicians like Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers band, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton) (piano and keyboards) and Randall Bramblett, who later founded his own Randall Bramblett Band, on the second.
In 1977, as a three-piece band (with Wayne Bruce now on bass), Hydra released Rock The World. Some reviewers[who?], including Edgar Brimer, their road manager, consider this to be their best record. By the end of 1977, the band broke up and reformed only occasionally thereafter, except for a series of shows in 1997, first with Jimmy Cobb and later with Tommy Vickery on bass, replacing Davis.
Hydra was one of those 70’s Southern rock bands that didn’t quite reach the commercial success they deserved. Hydra released three excellent albums between 1974 and 1977 before becoming frustrated with the growth of their success along with some management issues. They broke up in 1977 and have since only played handful of live shows in few different occasions.
Hydra was started in Atlanta, Georgia around 1968 by Steve Pace (drums) and Spencer Kirkpatrick (guitar) and Wayne Bruce (vocals/guitar) under the name Noah Mayflower. They briefly changed their name to Osmosis before taking the name Hydra in 1971 and added Orville Davis to bass.
After building a reputation as killer live band by supporting various major bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band and ZZ Top, Phil Walden signed them to his Capricorn Record label in 1973. Hydra´s self-titled debut album came out in 1974.
After year of touring and writing new songs  on the road, their sophomore effort, Land Of Money, was released in 1975 and bassist Orville Davis left the band soon after to launch his own career as a country singer.
In 1976 Hydra signed a deal with Polydor Records and Rock the World came out in 1977 featuring three piece band with Wayne Bruce switching from guitar to bass, but by the end of 1977 Hydra broke up only to make a brief come back in 1997 with handful of live shows.
In 2005 Hydra played two more live dates, which were recorded into a live album called Hydra: Live After All These Years. The band haven´t  completely shut out the option of recording new music under Hydra name in the future.

Overview
Grandia is one of the earlier works of Noriyuki Iwadare's career that was developed in 1997 with Game Arts and published by Kings Records. Grandia as a game contained all the traditional elements of an RPG, but it wasn't particularly groundbreaking. As a result, this soundtrack also didn't receive the same type of hype and glamour as other VGM soundtracks. For others who have had a bad hangover experience with the superficial themes of Radiata Stories, don't let that hinder your expectations of this soundtrack. I thought my initial indifference to Radiata Stories was because I didn't understand Iwadare's earlier works. However, after listening to Grandia, I realize how its style and structure was vastly different from Radiata Stories. If you compare Grandia to Radiata Stories, the musical progressions of ideas on the former are wholesome and interwoven so much tighter than the latter. Most of the tracks on the Radiata Stories album never lasted beyond one minute and just about as useful as sound clip advertisements. Iwadare was able to blend several diverse themes on each track and avoided the pitfalls of repetition.
This soundtrack is two discs split in half, one with synthesized tracks and another based off of orchestrated tracks. Disc One is at its best in demonstrating Iwadare's ability to transition from theme to theme on the same track to create a unique piece of music. This disc is contains all of the symphonic themes of the game. The themes on this soundtrack range from its bright sunny fields ('Delightful Adventure') and whimsical characters ('Leena's Theme' and 'Farewell Sue') to more serious or darker tone themes ('Ghost Ship' and 'Approaching Crisis'). He can change the mood of a track in a remarkable way that it isn't disjointed or fragmented. Most of Disc Two relies heavily on electronica and atmosphere to control the tone of the pieces. It is obviously weaker in comparison to Disc One in terms of instrumentation, but there are several pieces that hold its own in terms of being addictive such as 'Stand on Alone' and 'Sea Cat Restaurant'.

The adventure themes come to my mind first, so I'll discuss them first. The disc starts out with 'Theme of Grandia' which reminds me of the grandeur style of 'Legendary Sword' of Radiata Stories, but more mature. The strings move rapidly with the drums in the background initially and then the brass takes over. One of the excellent features about this track is that it changes from section to section subtly without being abrupt. As a result, this track is delivered coherently without sounding repetitious or monotonous. At 1:37, the pace turns for a slower section, but it doesn't distract you away from the main motif. It's as if the paramount feeling of being at the top of the world without anybody stopping you. At 3:15, the electric guitar joins the fray to provide the extra edge and melodic power in the track. Iwadare continues with 'Delightful Adventure' as you'll hear the strings, brass, percussion, and clarinet working together very nicely as an uplifting and jazzy fanfare track. It's sumptuous, addictive, and exhilarating to your ears of what an adventure or overworld theme would sound like for an RPG. The addition of the wood block mallets, woodwinds, and harp crescendo on this track is what gives that extra zany feeling to distinguish it from your normal jazz piece. Then you'll hear the piano at 1:55 inserted for a more pensive section. With all this swirling thick instrumentation, you'd think the track would easily sound too busy, but instead they work together as a pair of shoes side by side. Then Iwadare tries to sweep you off of your feet with the thrilling military track of 'Mullen'. You first hear the steady moving solo cello and later on the entire string section carries the main melody in the first half. The flute is played in sixteenth notes just like a type of march, while the string and underlying brass movement maintains the track's triumphant statement.
There are a few romantic and sorrowful moments in the disc such as 'Farewell Sue' when you hear the solemn quartet of the piano, flute, violin, and oboe. This calm track is executed extremely well and doesn't stray from its sense of direction. At 1:11, the oboe enters into the fray and 2:18 the violin completes the full reprise of this pensive theme. The sentimental piece of 'The Sandy Beach of Ganbo' is rendered well with the duet of the violin and piano. This track seems to almost be from a movie drama picture and is one of my favorite pieces on this album. At 3:15, the piano goes into a different movement, but seemingly more gloomy than before. There's so much chord variation that it doesn't sound too minimalist even with just two instruments. Later on, a lighter track can be found when you hear 'The Beautiful Woman of Alent'. The female synth choir imbues you with a white pure image while the chiming provided by the electronic keyboard provides the acoustic effect. This piece may have been done almost too careful, because nothing particularly stands out. Although most could argue this theme is quite antique or generic, it suffices for the designated scene. But, perhaps the greatest highlight of this group is 'Leen's Love Theme'. The harp and flute seems to dictate the harmony of song with a very elegant tone that matches 'Farewell Sue'. The duet of the flute and clarinet musical cue reminds me a lot of 'Across the Stars' from Star Wars Episode II, a simple yet stunning piece of music. After the clarinet crescendo, the strings swing the melody in pendulum fashion between exasperation to optimism. This piece is perhaps sentimental, but it mixes it in with the right balance of emotion. At 2:50, you'll hear the piano, string, and chimes paint a brighter environment that is a slight contrast from the beginning of the piece.
The next set of themes are outliers from the previous two categories. The bassoon of 'Ancient Illusionary Castle' initiates the funny, clumsy, and waltz-like tune with the snapping fingers in the background. Again, Iwadare demonstrates how he masters the technique of musical transition, when the track takes a turn for a bolder treatment of brass at 1:05 and then goes into its climax at 1:27. It sounds mischievous and reminds me of Gogo's theme from Final Fantasy VI. Then at 1:40, there's a type of bounciness emphasized with the woodwinds and strings that is reminiscent of his Lunar series. As I said before, each track on Disc One is filled with so many colorful ideas that you'll never feel it's monotonous. 'Ghost Ship' is a sly piece turns into a noble and gut-wrenching climax when the brass plays a small rendition of 'The Edge of the World'. Then it falls back into its background music at 2:13, with the woodwind ostinato. Iwadare effectively balances out the ambience some bright moments to turn this into a contemplative track. 'The Edge of the World' is a heroic and epic theme that is blended it with a facet of mysticism. This track reminds us of the bleak situation, but at the same time, a sense of hope is radiated. At 2:24 you'll hear a decent brass movement along with the snazzy snare drums to bring life into the track. The woodwinds play smoothly from one chord to another in a very coherent section. Iwadare concentrates on his ideas with force and passion from one section to the next on this track. Then you have the harsh and abrupt 'Approaching Crisis' which relies on the drums and trumpet fortissimos. This track doesn't seem to know where it wants to lead the listener and conveys only massive confusion. Not necessarily a bad track, but it fails to the extent of being memorable for the listener.
Moving to Disc Two, I'll begin discussing on the successfully executed electronic tracks that are quite noteworthy and imaginative. Iwadare displays a faint amount of Scottish and ethnic diversity with 'Prelude', featuring highly sharp and loud electronic bagpipes. This is an ominous and atmospheric track, but it's also potent at the same time. There's almost a sinister and dark cerebral tone if you listen to it carefully. I felt this piece seemed unfinished and too short to be completely analyzed. In 'Town of Palm', you'll hear the quirky electronic bagpipes played in the same fashion as 'Prelude' but not as overbearing as the latter. There diversity of percussion instruments is the main highlight of this upbeat tempo piece. The tin cans and a bunch of other unique metal parts clank off of each other as if you're walking into a bustling metal shop warehouse. Some of the musical inspiration from this track would later be evident in the tropical tone of 'Hopping Sun' of Radiata Stories. 'New Parm ~Frontier of Our Hearts~' is essentially a derivation of the 'Town of Palm', but with the electronic accordion. Motivation is the same as 'Town of Palm' but the clarinet, bongos, and cowbell at 2:10 spices up the track by giving it a ragtime (almost polka-like in some sections) groove. 'Kafu Village' serves as your typical background music, but thankfully the trumpets and the zany Jamaican drums ties up the loose ends of this uneven track so it doesn't lose your interest.
The electronic keyboard, pan flute, and alto saxophone of 'Stand and Rise' are utilized quite well to pump the flowing energy to the listener. But if there's something that just broils me is when nonsensical verbiage that doesn't provide musical support is inserted to a track. The man howling in the back reminds me of the terrible shout from 'Ceremony of Gods' in the Final Fantasy IX soundtrack. But the pristine construction of the track makes this forgivable. Sadly, if Iwadare had formulated more pieces like 'Stand and Rise' on this disc, he wouldn't have had to create wasted tracks such as 'Daito Town' and 'Jilpadon'. Next is 'Sea Cat Restaurant', which is a cute synth theme that relies heavily on the harpsichord and keyboard. This bizarre piece stutters later on into a corny rhyme that makes the environment even more amusing. Nonetheless, it was an eccentric track that jumped right out at me with an unorthodox manipulation of the synthesizers and xylophones. At 1:14, Iwadare tries to fancy the piece by vamping up the speed of the synthesizers. As much as Disc Two is supposedly the synthesizer half of Grandia, there are a couple of tracks which I felt should have been left in Disc One. 'Duel with Godwin' is perhaps a misplaced track should have been left on the orchestrated disc because of its authentic instrumentation. It's a mellow western music flick that combines the Huaca (multiple chambered pan-cultural vessel flute) and banjo. Later the majestic trumpet plays a solo section that will bring some nostalgic memories of Uematsu's Shadow's theme in Final Fantasy VI, but much bolder and assertive touch. Almost makes you envision that there's a showdown between two gunslingers out in the open at high noon. Then you have 'Snow Town Raynu' which immediately caught my attention when I marveled the steady cello riff and glockenspiel. The combination of the French horns refines the dreamy state of this European dancing track. It's one of the catchier tracks on Disc Two when you consider how much ambient music is present on this disc.
However, after you get past these themes, everything else on this disc seems to go South from here. 'Sart Ruins' seems to be more of a filler piece, as it starts out with techno beats while the timid flute plays aimlessly in the desolate setting. I felt the instrumentation was inappropriate, because the harmonica would probably have provided a better accompaniment to the techno beats. The same tin noise from 'Town of Palm' is reused in this piece but its magic is no longer there. There are a couple of mandatory but nuisance themes in the soundtrack such as 'Daito Town' which reminds me of the hideous 'Magical World' and 'Town of Deception' in Radiata Stories. The Indian tribe drums, percussion, and gongs can bore even the most patient listeners to sleep. This type of theme has just been beaten to death like no other types in game music. 'Prayers of Ganbo' follows in the same ambient trend with tribal outcries and that chilling marimba that gets into your skin. When I heard the aggressive the tribe sounds, it was almost like a war cry rather than a prayer. The erratic chords can grate your nerves after a while, but thankfully it's short. The sharp pitched electronica and techno beats in 'Twin Tower' drones out into an uninspiring six-minute electronic cacophony like a cartoon theme. Equally lacking in development is 'Jilpadon', it hangs on to the repetitive electronic accordion and synthesizers in a failed attempt to blend the chord structure of 'Town of Palm' into 'Daito Town'. Lastly, 'Domu Ruins' is a sporadic electronica driven piece that tries to fuse the harpsichord with a techno background.
Summary
It was hard for me to almost give any criticism on Disc One because every track seems to complement each other so well. Each track on the first disc metaphorically speaking brings splendid musical ideas without being over complex or confusing. Disc One left me speechless because each track contained so much depth and no filler material. But, as I was listening to Disc Two, I could examine several weaknesses of Iwadare's experimentation with his synthesizers. Even though there were some pieces that demonstrated moments of brilliance such as 'Stand and Rise' and 'Town of Palm', they still appear quite mediocre in comparison to the solid tracks of Disc One. There are a couple of stinkers such as 'Daito Town' and 'Doma Ruins' in which Iwadare abuses his electronica chords like whipping a horse to death. It's such a shame that these two pieces ruined the album's overall quality, which would otherwise have made this album nearly flawless. These tracks foreshadow his later experimental problems with Radiata Stories because of the lack of movement and ideas. However, unlike Radiata Stories, Iwadare never tries to recycle any material in Grandia, only constructing them on top of one another. The redeeming factor of this soundtrack is truly Disc One where Iwadare's orchestration shines at its best. For example even an ambient track like 'Ghost Ship' can sound like filler for the first minute, but quickly transitions into a splendid woodwind cue.
Overall, this is one of the more appreciable and important albums of Iwadare for me because it contains all the crucial elements for a game music album. If you're interested in listening to game music that falls in the category of symphonic and orchestral, you should give this classic soundtrack a try. Iwadare should guide himself back to his origins because this is where he's able to fully excel and innovate.
