Xmal Deutschland was a truly underrated post-punk band formed in Hamburg, West Germany in 1980. The original all-female lineup of the band consisted of the dynamic frontwoman Anja Huwe on bass and vocals who then switched to just vocals, Manuela Rickers on guitar, Fiona Sangster on keyboards, Rita Simonsen on bass, and Caro May on drums. After the release of their first single “Schwarze Welt” on the label ZickZack, Rita Simonsen was replaced by Wolfgang Ellerbrock. They were immediately pigeonholed as part of the “Neue Deutsche Welle” (New German Wave) movement along with the likes of Einstürzende Neubauten, DAF and Joachim Witt, to name a few. Albeit they had a unique sound of their own, there were also comparisons made to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Their classic second release and hit single “Incubus Succubus” in 1982 on ZickZack, was a favorite track at goth clubs. A more refined version “Incubus Succubus II” was later recorded and released on 4AD in 1983 and co-produced by Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer (This Mortal Coil). The new version was the more recognizable and preferred version at the clubs and radio stations. They had also replaced Caro May with their new drummer Manuela Zwingmann at this point. The 4AD label signing was a consequence of their tour opening up for the Cocteau Twins which subsequently garnered them more support with fans and recognition in the UK. Another lineup change occurred when their drummer Manuela was replaced by Peter Bellendir which lasted until after the release of their third album Viva in 1987. Most of their songs had been sung in German with some English mixed here and there. Their EP The Sequenz which was a remake of an earlier John Peel session contained some tracks in English and Anja sang in English on a few tracks in following releases, one notable track was Matador produced by Hugh Cornwell from The Stranglers. A few tracks off of the album Viva were in English. Their last album Devils in 1989, again with a new lineup change had all English titles and was an attempt at mainstream pop. Their debut album Fetisch and the follow up Tocsin remain as two of my favorite albums. 🖤⚡️🦇
