Vasco Núñez de Balboa
Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1475-1519) was a Spanish conquistador who famously discovered the Pacific Ocean after crossing the isthmus of Panama in 1513. An utterly ruthless adventurer and colonizer, Balboa was as much a danger to his fellow conquistadors as he was to the indigenous peoples he came across.
Balboa helped establish the town of Darién, the first permanent Spanish settlement on the American mainland. Extracting gold from Panama and instituting slavery and forced labour to work on plantations, Balboa was ultimately outwitted by a Spanish rival who had him tried and executed for treason.
Early Life
Vasco Núñez de Balboa was born in Extramadura in Spain in the small village of Jerez de los Caballeros in the province of Badajoz. His family belonged to the minor nobility. In 1500-1, Balboa joined the expedition of Rodrigo de Bastidas (1460-1526), which hoped to find pearls along the northern coast of South America (present-day Colombia), then a virtually unknown region to the Europeans. The expedition was a success in charting new coastlines but did not find many of the hoped-for pearls. Balboa next settled on Hispaniola (modern Haiti/Dominican Republic), where he owned a plantation, but his business sense was poor, and he was obliged to abandon the island after he racked up huge debts.

The UN IS THE GREAT SATAN..
They are destroying lives around the world. They are funding human trafficking, rape and murder in the jungles here in Darien Gap Panama.
Your AMERICAN tax dollars are paying for this!
And the beautiful indigenous Embera Indians have to deal with the filth as these invaders descend upon their village here in Baja Chiquita. Special thanks to Oscar Ramirez and SENAFRONT for making this trip so successful.

Chapter 203 Trivia
Happy 4th of July from Dr. Xeno*!
(*Indirectly.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fluorite mines still exist in Japan, however they're far inland so the KoS can't make use of their boat routes for transport.
Fluorite is one of the first materials shown to fluoresce (=glow when light/EM radiation hits it), which is what the phenomenon was named after!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the major problems in improving telescope quality is getting rid of chromatic aberration, which can be improved by using lenses with a lower refractive index (such as those made of fluorite rather than glass). This bends the light less, leading to clearer magnification.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rocket design is similar to cruise missiles, in that it uses a jet engine rather than a rocket engine. Cruise missiles will follow an almost direct path to their target, and have the ability to adjust direction at any point. Ballistic missiles cannot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blocky thing shown here could be a stylized vacuum column tape drive, a device for storing data on magnetic tape (the black ribbon in cassettes) to be used in computations.
One of these devices is the IBM 7090, which was used by NASA to control space flights in the 60s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The map shows that the KoS may be aiming to land around Goa in India.
Assuming they don't stop, the journey via the Suez is >10 days, and >23 days via the Cape of Good Hope.
Tumblr media
The Banana Canal seems to be how the villagers remember the name of the Panama Canal, which is odd because bananas only grow in the very south of Japan (if at all) so they're unlikely to have been familiar with them before reaching South America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Suez is a man-made canal that gets drained and cleared every 10 years so the boats can pass through unobstructed. The area has also been mostly desert for thousands of years. Sandstorms would soon fill it in, making it impassable.
Tumblr media
What Ryusui is worried about here is probably similar to the Ever Given back in March, when winds ran it aground, blocking the whole canal. It had to be dug out to be freed, which the KoS can't do here. Turning around or backing up is also impossible if the canal is too narrow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kohaku is the only power/fighter team member here, and she's definitely making sure to represent the hot-heads! Getting revenge on a canal, trying to destroy things…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chelsea's old banners made a comeback, which isn't surprising since fabric is tedious to make. Reuse is the basis of Senku's science after all!
But more importantly, how the H-E-L-L did it survive those 7 years when everyone was petrified?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dam shown looks more like a beaver dam or a deliberate structure than something that naturally got packed like that. The way it follows onto the land is a little odd to me as well… Something could be hiding underneath?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Senku always makes sure to number his rockets.
(I spent too long wondering if this was a pun, but the i-shi/stone pun is for 1-4, and "Dr. One" doesn't quite fit how "Dr. Stone" is pronounced…)
Tumblr media
The rocket has two sets of controllers, one used by Senku on the ship and the other by Ryusui about half way to the dam. It's unlikely that this choice is due to range issues, as the cell phones worked 80 km apart and this is only 20 km.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's probably so that Ryusui can pinpoint the landing while Senku takes care of the launch.
The coordination between them is impressive!
Tumblr media
India has likely been chosen as Math City because of its long history of mathematics dating back over 3000 years, before Europe had made similar advances. They invented many important concepts, such as negative numbers, the idea of zero, and decimal points.
The other option for India being Math City is that it has many natural resources useful for making computers and other electronics, however I think we'll have to wait until future chapters to see why they chose it!

harry flynn has taken up permanent residency in my brain so i think about him a lot, here you go. @libertatias - he is a notorious flirt, something that has gotten him both into and out of trouble multiple times in the past. charisma level 100 fr honestly. - he does show up in the Uncharted comics at the beginning of the first issue, found here (you're welcome) but I still headcanon that he and Nate met at a fairly young age. Part of me wants to believe that they met even prior to the Panama prison fiasco. Harry was off on another job and decides to give Nate a ring to see how it went, and well ... - Harry's the one to convince Nate to get back in the game after Sam's death, maybe uses Avery's grave as leverage, but eventually things between Nate and Rafe fall apart and Nate can't stand working with him anymore, and bails - Nate keeps Harry at arms length for a while, far enough away that he won't be in the way, but close enough that he can get hold of him if needs be. - naturally, working in close proximity to a guy as flirty as Harry in life-or-death situations like heists, things definitely got physical at least a few times 😏 - I like to think that Harry snuck off to Nate's motel room in Greece the way Chloe does, probably just to bother him but he definitely missed seeing Nate, wink wink - my personal hc is that Harry knew damn well how dangerous Lazarevic was, and his betrayal to Nate in the museum in Istanbul was a way of cutting Nate out of it. He needed Nate's help to get in there in the first place, but he didn't want Nate getting wrapped up in everything Lazarevic was doing so he figured 3 months in a Turkish prison would be enough time to get ahead and make sure Nate was safe - he's not stupid, either, and knew that Nate would come after him in Borneo, but he'd just hoped that by that point he'd be far enough ahead - as for Harry shooting Nate on the train, it might well have been to do with jealousy, maybe after he found out Nate was getting with Chloe behind his back. He shouldn't have been that surprised, really, but that didn't mean he couldn't be pissed about it. I do like to headcanon tho that a shot to the side was a far better outcome than a shot between the eyes, which is likely what Lazarevic would have given Nate had he caught them on the train instead of Harry. - Harry knows, particularly by the time we get to the scene in the monastery, that he's not getting out of this alive. He knows guys like Lazarevic kill their partners when they're not needed anymore, and he's dreading that outcome, but he's too far gone at that point - he keeps up the hostility around Nate half out of jealousy, and half as a means of trying to protect Nate, and himself if he's being honest. my all time favourite hc is that he miraculously survives the grenade blast. purely because when you see Nate stagger to his feet, you get a brief glance at Harry lying on his back on the ground. I get it, video game gore blah blah blah, this isn't team fortress 2 where you see a guy explode into chunks, but even so. i like to think that somehow just enough sap out of the tree of life made its way to him, keeping him alive long enough to stagger out of the rubble. as much as i like to think he made a life for himself in the village, it's not likely as the village people would have seen him with the men who shot the place up, so it's unlikely they'd help him. maybe they did, who knows

For the coco x encanto. What if Dolores decides to plan on leaving to find her tia and tio in Mexico. She'll be an adult at some point so... she's biding her time till her parents cant force her to stay and finding a way to leave? What would happen after her 18th or 21st that pepa or Felix find her plans? Would they try and stop her or would felix see the damage they're causing. Especially if she's making plans for Camilos escape... if she can take him with her...
Oh man…
Ever since her Abuela and mamá started basically despising her, Dolores wanted to leave.
She started discussing the possibility of running away to Mexico with Mariano, wanting to take Camilo with her as well.
But their plans came to a halt when Antonio was born.
After that, Dolores was reduced to a nanny for her youngest brother, while Pepa, Félix and Camilo help the town. That didn’t mean she didn’t get blamed for everything by Abuela tho…
It was then that Dolores had enough. She had become her youngest brother’s mamá, Félix and Pepa only being parents to him when it suited them while ignoring her.
Dolores wanted to get out of here…
At 17, soon to be 18, she and Mariano finally set their plan into motion.
In the middle of the night, Dolores, having already packed her things, grabbed a 1 year old Antonio out of his crib, and went straight for the front door.
But she was stopped by an 11 year old Camilo…
He begged her not to leave him, crying that he needed her, and that he wanted to go with her and Tonito.
Dolores quickly explained that they’re going to leave Encanto, and that they may lose their gifts, but Camilo didn’t care. He just wanted to stay with his siblings.
So, the three remaining Madrigal grandchildren, including Mariano, left the Encanto, and started their journey to Mexico.
They traveled by cart, crossing the Colombian border to Panama, went through Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras, but got lost when they were in Guatemala…
Antonio was crying, Camilo was exhausted, and Dolores and Mariano didn’t know were to go.
In the end, they found a tiny and secluded village were they could live without being questioned for lack of passports.
And so, the four became a family.
Dolores and Mariano married as soon as the latter turned 18, and raised Camilo and Antonio together. Tonito actually saw Mariano and Lola as his parents as he grew up, while seeing Camilo as his cool older brother.
In the end, the family of four was finally happy, free of toxicity and heavy expectations.
Though Dolores often wondered how her Tía Julieta and her family were doing…

Writing Sample #6 - Temenos
'Twas a gloomy, fog filled night, the teeth chattering ocean breeze rolled across the several hills of the small hamlet bordering ginormous mass of water, its usual crystal clear currents tinged with inky blackness that dared to engulf any soul that trudged into its waves. The thin pine leaves shook as if frightened by an unwelcome guest who had unceremoniously spun onto its shores. Beaches that contained glittering sand with bustling streets built by ambitious people with exhausted brows– toiling daily, counting mere dimes in their coin purses. It was on one portion of said beach was a bizarre little shop erected; home to a strange man elected the "oddity merchant" by his neighbors.          That merchant was named Temenos Saintistel. Standing behind his ornate cherry wood desk, which had originally had been his father's, the merchant stood with an ache throbbing on his abdomen. "Now, I told you to stay off your feet youngin'." An older woman with coarse blonde hair with sparse strands of gray stood with a frustrated expression, hastily procuring several vials of peculiar ingredients of several varieties and placing them before her.
"Sorry to worry you, ma'am." One of his strong, well worked hands was tightly gripped on the side, his face tensed in exasperation of the pain twinging throughout his entire upper half of his body. His onyx colored hair was messy–parted incorrectly in several different directions, victim to his cream panama hat that sat upturned at his fist. Temenos's other hand slid up to rub the back of his head while feeling increasingly awkward despite the waves of agony rolling across his skin.
One of the shutters shook in a distraught manner, causing both occupants to jump in surprise. "Oh my!" The woman, who was named Castii had previously warned the merchant of the building's abysmal structure. As a locally born apothecary, she had gotten quite skilled at understanding a properly built home and was well acquainted with assisting in knowledge of repairs. Shaking her head, she murmured quietly to herself as she sprinkled different amounts of individual ingredients into her mortar, grinding down everything added with the pestle. "Now you use this three times a day and it will calm that rash. And don't you dare go back into those waters when its so dark, have the whole town acting like fools!" The male winced in response to her brutal wording, acknowledging he had royally goofed up an opportunity.
He had appraising a newly arrived glass fixture that was unique in it's creation– jeweled with scripture like markings sprawled upon its conjoined parts, elegant and magical in its appearance. He had noticed a stray chip not previously noticed when browsing in a foreign stall. Pursuing his lip, he had paced the glamorous piece over to the window; and as he raised it he became further irritated by the sudden emergence of the sudden crack. Unraveled with despair, Temenos placed the broken jewelry aside as he noticed an invigorating sight. Tendrils of silvery gray were dancing upon the surface of the bank, a ruby eye lazily glancing upon the surface. In naive excitement, the merchant had burst from his home– calling out in amazement as several nearby townsfolk turned in curious surprise. People ushered towards the shore, several stopping before the water while others bravely pressed further into the water towards the unknown creature.
As the villagers approached, the aquatic mass slipped away from view– distracted by the thrill of seeing the new animal was terrifying yet amusing nonetheless. Until suddenly, a tentacle struck through the sand, yanking Temenos down towards the sand in a harsh motion. His body thumped against the sand with a sickening thud, yet, thankfully due to his muscle and overall constitution, he managed to come away with mere scratches and bruises. The worst part of the attack managed to be his torso where the tentacle had wrapped, only dropping him from the unexpected attack of his quick dagger– his last effort drawn feverously as he felt the stir of the ocean behind him. The creature must have been weakened by some sort of previous attack, or perhaps it was an infant of its strange species– as a usual attack from this caliber of mythos would usually be nearly invincible to physical attacks.
That sting in his abdomen had been secreted by the tiny appendage, a toxin meant to weaken predators– yet, it was only a guess, unknown to the actual answer he was sought after. Temenos groaned as the pain grew thicker, his head throbbing as he rubbed his eye. "Yes ma'am, I'm terribly sorry Ms. Castii." He apologized to the old widow, unable to meet her sapphire eyes, feeling utterly abashed for his recent behavior.
"You better young man, now, I must go. Get yourself to into bed soon– It is quite an abnormal hour to be awake. At this rate, you'll never wed." She scolded Temenos as if she was his mother– despite their actual closeness in age. Unable to get another word out as the woman had swiftly packed during her entire speech.
The dark haired male heard the soft *click* of his front door, left alone in his home as he sighed. "Man, she could have at least helped me apply it." His pain wavered in his voice as he carefully removed the bandages; washing the wound gentle and thoroughly before moving onto to spread the ointment across his wounds. He hissed in pain as he spread the gel across his flushed skin, cringing as the cool met the pained heat.
It was only then, as he finished applying the salve that he realized how beautifully grim the skies appeared to be, the distant lighthouse glowing as it illuminated the beach. Surprise lit his eyes as he saw the collapsed form of a miraculous being among the sand, placed on a raft of driftwood. In seconds his adrenaline pumped as he rushed through the door while hurriedly shoving himself in a strewn about cloak. As he rushed down the stairs of his front steps, he ran adeptly through the sand, sliding down to the shore as he rushed over to the body– letting out a soft chuckle in response as he fully took in the magnificent individual sound asleep.

Straw Hat Day
Straw Hat Day is observed on May 15 every year to celebrate this timeless wardrobe staple. Both men and women wear it in a variety of styles. From conical to Panama, the straw hat has stood the test of time, serving not only as a protection from the sun but a fashion statement. Today’s the day people celebrate this functional yet stylish hat. So, do you own one? If the answer is no, the day’s for you to finally own one and go about your day in style.
History of Straw Hat Day
The origin of Straw Hat Day is unclear. It started in New Orleans in the late 1910s. The day marks the beginning of summer, with people switching their winter headgears to the spring/summer ones. On the other hand, at the University of Pennsylvania, Straw Hat Day was observed on the second Saturday of May, the day being the principal spring celebration for undergraduates and a ballgame. The day was said to be widely accepted in Philadelphia that no one in the city dared wear a straw hat before the ballgame.
A straw hat, a brimmed hat woven out of straw or straw-like materials, is not only for protection but for style, and even it becomes a symbol. And it has been around since the Middle Ages. In Lesotho, ‘mokorotlo’ — a local name for the straw hat — is worn as part of the traditional Sotho clothing. It’s a national symbol. The ‘mokorotlo’ also appears on their flag and license plates. In the U.S., the Panama hat became popular due to President Theodore Roosevelt wearing it during his visit to the Panama Canal construction site.
Popular straw hats include boaters, lifeguards, fedora, and Panama. A boater or straw boater is a semi-formal warm-weather hat. It’s the type of straw hat worn by people around the time Straw Hat Day began. The boater is made from stiff sennit straw, with a stiff flat brim and striped grosgrain ribbon around its crown. It’s still a part of the school uniform in numerous boys’ schools in the U.K., Australia, and South Africa. Although men are seen wearing the boater, the hat is unisex. So, you can style it with your outfit, ladies.

Unusually early heat wave in Pacific Northwest tests records (AP) An early heat wave took hold Saturday in parts of the Pacific Northwest, with temperatures nearing or breaking records in some areas and heat advisories in place through Monday. The historically temperate region has grappled with scorching summer temperatures and unprecedented wildfires fueled by climate change in recent years. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory extending from Saturday through Monday for much of the western parts of both Oregon and Washington state. It said the temperatures could raise the risk of heat-related illness, particularly for those who are dehydrated or don’t have effective cooling.
Venezuela Brain Drain Is Enriching Neighbors (Bloomberg) No Latin American country churned out as many college graduates as Venezuela during the petroleum-powered boom that began there in the 1970s. Now, migration experts estimate some 2 million Venezuelans with advanced degrees live outside the country as turmoil at home prompted a brain drain. In Panama alone, the expats have started more than 5,500 businesses and are contributing more than $200 million a year in taxes and fees.
Zelensky, in private, plots bold attacks inside Russia, leak shows (Washington Post) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has won the trust of Western governments by refusing to use the weapons they provide for attacks inside Russia and prioritizing the targeting of Russian forces inside Ukraine’s borders. But behind closed doors, Ukraine’s leader has proposed going in a more audacious direction—occupying Russian villages to gain leverage over Moscow, bombing a pipeline that transfers Russian oil to Hungary, a NATO member, and privately pining for long-range missiles to hit targets inside Russia’s borders, according to classified U.S. intelligence documents detailing his internal communications with top aides and military leaders. The documents, which have not been previously disclosed, are part of a broader leak of U.S. secrets circulated on the Discord messaging platform and obtained by The Washington Post. They reveal a leader with aggressive instincts that sharply contrast with his public-facing image as the calm and stoic statesman weathering Russia’s brutal onslaught. The insights were gleaned through intercepted digital communications, providing a rare look at Zelensky’s deliberations amid Russian missile barrages, infrastructure attacks and war crimes.
Germany Announces Its Biggest Military Aid Package Yet for Ukraine (NYT) Germany on Saturday sent the strongest signal yet of its commitment to backing Ukraine in its battle against Russian occupiers, promising more tanks, armored vehicles and substantial air defense systems in its largest weapons package for Kyiv. The arms package, totaling 2.7 billion euros, or about $2.95 billion, amounted to roughly as much as Germany’s total military aid to Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. The move was part of a budding effort by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine to draw a line under a year of rocky relations over Germany’s hesitancy to provide weapons and solidify a partnership that may prove increasingly critical to maintaining European unity in backing the war.
Turkey appears headed to a runoff presidential race (AP) Turkey’s presidential elections appeared to be heading toward a second-round runoff on Monday, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has ruled his country with a firm grip for 20 years, leading over his chief challenger, but falling short of the votes needed for an outright win. With 99.4% of the domestic votes and 84% of the overseas votes counted, Erdogan had 49.4% of the votes, with his main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, garnering 45%. Erdogan, 69, told supporters in the early hours of Monday that he could still win. He said, however, that he would respect the nation’s decision if the race went to a runoff on May 28.
Syrians in Turkey facing uncertain future whether Erdoğan stays or goes (Guardian) An estimated 4 million Syrians live in Turkey and their relationship to their adopted home deepened over the past decade despite an increasingly hostile climate. When polled, at least 80% of Turks say they want Syrians to return. This sentiment has found an increasing home across the political spectrum in Turkey, amid a rise in openly anti-immigrant xenophobic parties and where a broad coalition trying to unseat the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has attacked him from the right on immigration. The result has been a tug-of-war between Erdoğan’s governing coalition and the nominally social democratic opposition Republican People’s party (CHP) over the fate of Turkey’s Syrian community. Both parties are openly competing to see who can promise to crack down harder on immigration and swiftly restore relations with Assad. When Turkey heads to the polls on Sunday the Syrian community is poised to endure loss no matter who wins. Syrians who return face an uncertain future that may include detention, torture, enforced disappearance and poverty.
Cyclone Mocha makes landfall in Myanmar (AP) Rescuers early Monday evacuated about 1,000 people trapped by seawater 3.6 meters (12 feet ) deep along western Myanmar’s coast after a powerful cyclone injured hundreds and cut off communications. Damage and six deaths have been reported, but the true impact was not yet clear in one of Asia’s least developed countries. Strong winds injured more than 700 people. Mocha made landfall near Sittwe township with winds blowing up to 209 kilometers (130 miles) per hour, Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said. By midday Monday, it had weakened to a tropical depression, according to the India Meteorological Department. High winds crumpled cell phone towers, but in videos collected by local media before communications were lost, deep water raced through streets and wind blew off roofs.
Thailand’s Opposition Wins (AP) Thailand’s opposition racked up a stunning majority of the 500 seats at stake in the race for the House of Representatives, dealing a major blow to the establishment parties and the former general who has led the Southeast Asian country since seizing power in a 2014 coup. The results of Sunday’s general election are a strong repudiation of the country’s conservatives and reflect the disenchantment in particular of young voters who want to limit the influence of the military in politics and reform the monarchy. But the exact shape of the new government is unclear as post-election coalition talks and behind-the-scene negotiations take center stage.
Iranian nuclear program (WSJ) Alarmed by Iran’s progress in enriching uranium at close to weapons-grade levels, European countries are pressing the Biden administration to revive a diplomatic track with Tehran that they hope would help avoid a possible nuclear crisis. After 18 months of negotiations, talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear accord collapsed in August when Tehran rejected a deal that would have largely restored the original pact’s terms. Iran is now amassing 60% highly enriched uranium and recently produced a small amount of near-weapons grade material, according to the United Nations atomic agency. European officials say time is running out to diplomatically address an Iranian nuclear program that puts Tehran as little as several months away from being able to develop a nuclear weapon, but they are worried that the White House has shelved the issue until after the 2024 election. They acknowledged that any new effort to keep a lid on Iran’s nuclear advances may fail to stop Iran from eventually getting a weapon.
Cease-fire between Israel and militants in Gaza appears to hold (AP) A fragile cease-fire between Israeli forces and militants in the Gaza Strip appeared to be holding after a five-day clash that killed 33 Palestinians and two people in Israel. The latest round of Gaza fighting was sparked Tuesday when Israeli jets killed three top commanders from the Islamic Jihad militant group in response to earlier rocket launches from Gaza. Those killings set off a barrage of militant fire and the conflagration threatened to drag the region into another all-out war until an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire took hold late Saturday. While the calm appeared to bring a sense of relief to Gaza’s 2 million people and hundreds of thousands of Israelis who had been largely confined to bomb shelters in recent days, the agreement did nothing to address the underlying issues that have fueled numerous rounds of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip over the years.
Netflix and Egypt Spar Over an African Cleopatra. (NYT) On this much, at least, everyone can agree: Cleopatra was a formidable queen of ancient Egypt, the last of the Macedonian Greek dynasty founded by Alexander the Great, who went on to even greater posthumous fame as a seductress, immortalized by Shakespeare and Hollywood. Beyond that, many of the details are fuzzy—which is how one of the world’s dominant streaming services ended up in an imbroglio with modern-day Egypt recently, called out by online commenters and even the Egyptian government for casting a Black actress to play Cleopatra in the Netflix docudrama series “African Queens.” Egyptians say the influential streaming service is dragging an ancient queen into a modern, and decidedly Western, debate—about Black representation in Hollywood—in which she has no real place. A popular television host accused Netflix of trying to “take over our Egyptian culture.” An Egyptian lawyer filed a complaint demanding that the streaming service be shut down in the country.
‘Mommunes’: Mothers Are Living Single Together (NYT) First, Kristin Batykefer lost her marketing job when there was a management change. Then her marriage fell apart, and she suddenly found herself with no income and nowhere to go. To help her get back on her feet last year, two family friends invited Ms. Batykefer and her now 4-year-old daughter to stay in their four-bedroom home. Then Ms. Batykefer’s best friend, Tessa Gilder, also went through a divorce and came to stay in the house, bringing along her two children, now ages 5 and 1. Almost overnight, they had organically formed a commune for single mothers: a “mommune.” All over the world, women are joining forces under one roof, sharing the load of child care and household bills through the age-old power of sisterhood. Living in a mommune, said Kristin, has made it easy to find an extra pair of hands to help. Ms. Batykefer wrote on an TikTok post that has been viewed more than 1 million times, “Shoulda moved into a mommune a long time ago.”
For Today’s Anxious Teens, Outdoor Adventures Can Be a Cure (WSJ) According to a report released in February by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teenagers in the U.S. are in the midst of a staggering mental health crisis. A survey conducted in fall 2021 found that 30% of teen girls have seriously considered suicide, a jump of 60% in the past decade. Boys are struggling, too. More than 40% of high school students reported feeling so despondent or helpless that they could not go about their normal activities for at least two weeks during the previous year. What can we as parents do? For our family, the answer has always been nature. We hoped that by making nature our family’s norm, they would absorb, as though by osmosis, its many lessons and gifts. Research points to the mental, physical and emotional benefits of time spent in nature. In an April 2021 review of more than 40 experimental studies, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that exposure to outdoor environments reduces the stress-hormone cortisol, lowers blood pressure, boosts immunity and executive function, and provides relief from chronic anxiety and depression. According to a 2007 study in Japan, participants in three-day “forest bathing” trips—a kind of eco-therapy involving immersion in nature—showed improved immune function that lasted for a full month after the outing. Even short, daily doses of nature can help. A 2019 study showed that U.S. university students who spent 15 minutes or more being active outside reported a higher quality of life and less perceived stress.

Betrayal. Lies. Uncertainty.
A life full of secrets untold and enemies hiding in plain sight.
Is there anyone she can trust? Can she even trust herself...?
Basics:
Name: Akriel Lukas
Age: 26
Gender: F
Height: 5′8″
Orientation: Pansexual
Faith: Agnostic
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Background:
All those who call Kartakass home aspire to fame and riches, and Akriel is no exception. Born in the small fishing village of Medria, she inherited her love of music from her infamous father and her drive for success from her overbearing mother. No one worked harder than Akriel, who practiced tirelessly even after being admitted to Harmonic Hall’s prestigious school of music. Though not one for following rules or listening to the wisdom of others, Akriel was practically guaranteed to graduate at the top of her class - before a terrible betrayal took everything away from her. That day, Akriel learned the truth: the only way to reach the top was to tear down those who stood above her.
With her new strategy, Akriel rose to be one of the most renowned bards in all of Kartakass. But though she has the riches and fame she always wanted, she knows they come with a target painted on her back. She knows everyone wants to expose her secrets and take her place at the top.
Akriel knows the secret she has now is even bigger than the one that brought her down before - and she will do anything to keep it safe.
Characteristics:
Akriel is always full of charm and charisma, skilled at deceiving others while simultaneously persuading them to divulge their own secrets. Years of practice have given her fingers a dexterity none can match, elevating her performances to the next level. Confident and sociable, Akriel is the life of the party wherever she goes. But underneath her congeniality is someone constantly wary of those around her. Trust is not something she can afford to give others if she wants to survive.
Personality Trait: I do things my way, even if it goes against what others say.
Personality Trait: I can make a friend out of anyone, and often use this to my advantage.
Ideal: Aspiration. I want to be remembered as the most famous bard in history.
Bond: I must become the most famous to earn my family’s love.
Flaw: Everyone is out to get me - the only one I can trust is myself.
Appearance:
Akriel could never be called religious, but she does sometimes wonder whether to curse or thank the gods for making her the spitting image of her father. Her deepset eyes are the same hazel color, though the smile always on her lips never quite reaches them. Her hands are the same shade of espresso, covered in calluses and tiny scars. Her coily hair is usually styled in an afro, partly covered by a large panama hat. Akriel’s style is both bold and unoriginal, copying the signature white and green outfit of her father. The only difference is her many accessories, which she adds to try to make it her own.
Tumblr media
Specific content warnings for Akriel’s route include: abusive relationship (past), emotional abuse, and verbal abuse.
