Top 5 Desert Sites in Rajasthan
Tumblr media
Rajasthan’s desert expanse encompasses the trio of Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur, collectively known as the desert triangle. These cities intricately entwine to form a desert circle, rendering Rajasthan the ‘most colorful desert in the world,’ steeped in cultural and historical significance.
Correctly, Rajasthan boasts desert sites, yet the misconception lies in the fact that only 2/5 of the state’s area is desert, specifically in the western region, spanning from Pushkar to Jaisalmer, falling under the Thar desert.
Explore Rajasthan with our recommended tour packages:
Rajasthan Desert Safari Tour
Rajasthan Heritage Tour
Rajasthan Wildlife Tour
Thar Desert
Tumblr media
Ranked as the 18th largest desert globally, the Thar Desert spans both India and Pakistan.
Within India’s domain, numerous sand dunes punctuate the landscape, some hosting wild vegetation. However, only about six of these dune areas qualify as authentic desert sites.
By ‘authentic,’ I refer to genuine desert sites in Rajasthan, featuring sand dunes towering between 20 to 50 meters. These locales also facilitate various desert tourism activities like Camel safari, Jeep safari, dune bashing, desert camping, and, in select places, even “Paragliding.”
Moreover, these deserts emerge as prime spots for capturing breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, offering perfect moments for your camera or mobile lens.
In this exploration of Rajasthan’s deserts, I unveil seven authentic desert sand dune sites, each accompanied by a plethora of activities for your enjoyment.
Top 6 Desert Sites in Rajasthan:
Desert in Jaisalmer:
Tumblr media
Jaisalmer, situated in the heart of the Thar desert, stands out as one of the finest cities. Here, expansive desert lands host two prominent desert dunes — Sam Sand Dunes and Khuri Sand Dunes.
Both Sam and Khuri boast sand dunes ranging from 30 to 60 meters, drawing travelers from across India, especially Gujarat.
Jaisalmer is not only renowned for its dunes but also for its captivating attractions, including the Golden Fort (Sonar Quila), Gadisar Lake, Amar Sagar, and the Jaisalmer War Museum.
Explore in detail:
Sam Sand Dunes
Khuri Sand Dunes
Desert in Jodhpur:
Tumblr media
Jodhpur, located 260 km east of Jaisalmer, holds its own as one of the prominent desert regions in the Thar Desert. Despite green vegetation dominating most of Jodhpur district, the Osian desert emerges as a desert marvel.
Osian, just 70 km from Jodhpur, is famous for its temples (Osian Mata Temple & a Jain temple) and the adjoining desert dunes. The Osian sand dunes attract travelers seeking an authentic desert safari experience, including Jeep Safari and Camel safari.
The secluded ambiance of Osian makes it an ideal choice for a tranquil night stay in desert camps, offering a less crowded alternative to Sam Sand Dunes in Jaisalmer.
How to reach Osian:
Public transport: Bus from Jodhpur
Private transport: Hire a taxi
The best time to visit Osian is around 3–4 pm, allowing for a visit to the Osian Mata Temple followed by camel or Jeep Safari.
Khimsar village:
Tumblr media
Situated in central Rajasthan, close to both Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, Nagaur, known for its cattle farms, unveils a hidden gem 45 km south — Khimsar village.
Khimsar boasts the Khimsar Desert Sand Dunes, a small town lying between Jaipur and Jodhpur. Notable attractions include the Khimsar Sand Dune Resort, offering a unique experience with village-themed huts and camel rides in the maintained dune area.
The flat desert area surrounding Khimsar teems with rich wildlife, featuring Desert Fox, Nigai, Blackbucks, Demoiselle Cranes, Partridges, and other species in wildlife sanctuaries.
How to reach Khimsar Sand Dunes:
Taxi from Jodhpur or Jaipur
Train to Nagaur railway station, 45 km north of the dunes.
Khimsar Sand Dunes offer a serene and less tourist-filled experience, making it an alluring destination.
Desert in Bikaner:
Tumblr media
Bikaner, a popular tourist city in the heart of the Thar desert, beckons with its Junagarh Palace, Karni Mata temple (home to over 25,000 rats), and the sprawling desert areas just beyond the city.
Bikaner’s deserts, although not towering, spread across a vast area, gaining fame for camel safaris and camping activities. Additionally, Bikaner hosts the Bikaner Camel Festival in January, a must-attend for enthusiasts.
How to reach Bikaner desert dunes:
Most desert camps and safari tours operate in Raisar area, a 15-minute drive from Bikaner city.
Public transport or Bikaner taxi service for a full-day exploration of Bikaner’s attractions, followed by an evening stay in the desert area.
Desert in Pushkar:
Tumblr media
Revered as one of the holiest cities for Hindus and a major tourist destination in Rajasthan, Pushkar is encircled by desert sands. While the sand dunes here may not rival the grandeur of Sam Sand Dunes in Jaisalmer, they offer an exceptional opportunity to explore rural villages in Rajasthan.
Activities in the Pushkar desert:
Camel rides
Camel cart exploration of Thar Desert villages
How to reach Pushkar desert dunes:
Nearest train station: Ajmer Junction (around 15 km away)
For those seeking a desert experience near Jaipur, Pushkar desert is an ideal option, just 140 km away.

Staycation Near 'City of Temples' | Ginger Katra
Jammu and Kashmir's winter capital is perched on a hill overlooking the northern plains on the Shivalik Range. The city of Jammu, which is also the state's winter capital and is referred to as the "city of temples," is whence the district of Jammu gets its name.
Jammu is located on a hillock along the Tawi River and is bordered by the districts of Rajauri and POK (Bhimber) in the northwest, Kathua district in the east and southeast, Pakistan (Sialkot) in the west, and Udhampur district in the north and northeast. Temples' glistening spires used to be scattered across the city's skyline. Due to their concealment behind tall structures, these spikes are no longer visible. The city is home to various Muslim, Sikh, and Christian shrines. The base camp for Vaishno Devi's sacred shrine is Jammu. It serves as the state's rail hub as well.
The temperature fluctuates from frigid in the winter, with lows as low as 0.9 degrees Celsius, to heat waves in the summer, with highs as high as 46 degrees Celsius.
Culture & Heritage
The second century AD is when Jammu's first structures were constructed. The Buddhist Stupa at Ambaran near Akhnoor, the ninth to tenth-century AD temples at Krimchi and Babor, and the old forts, palaces, and temples constructed in the middle periods are examples of these. Jammu's significant historical and heritage monuments include:
Amar Mahal Palace
The architectural wonder along the National Highway leading to Srinagar is the Amar Mahal Palace. A stunning palace made of red sandstone sits among Jammu's most gorgeous vistas and was constructed like a French chateau on a hill overlooking the Tawi River. The palace, which was once Raja Amar Singh's residence, has been transformed into a museum and is now cared for by the Hari-Tara Charitable Trust. The 120 kg pure gold throne that the Maharaja once sat on is on display in the museum. The museum features a painting gallery and a library with over 25,000 books on various subjects and disciplines.
Bahu Fort
Raja Bahu Lochan is thought to have constructed the historic Bahu Fort in Jammu roughly 3,000 years ago. The Dogra kings renovated it in the 19th century. The Hindu goddess Kali, the ruling deity of Jammu, has a temple within the fort's boundaries. The fort is a sacred location. The "Bawey Wali Mata temple" is how locals refer to the structure. The terraced Bagh-e-Bahu Garden, built in the manner of Mughal gardens, is located directly beneath the fort and offers panoramic views of the city of Jammu as well as an underground fish aquarium.
Mansar Lake
Visit this stunning lake for a panoramic tour worthy of fantasy. It is surrounded by hills covered with forest. On the banks of the river are the remains of a modest historic palace with vibrant frescoes. One of the most well-known adventure tourism locations in India is Mansar lake, which is close to the city of Jammu. Mansar is another name for Mansarovar. Mansar Lake is a very picturesque lake that is surrounded by hills covered in forest and has a length of more than a mile and a width of half a mile. It is regarded as a particularly sacred location that shares the holiness and tradition of Mansa Sarovar and has been recognised since legendary times. On the shores of the lake stands a temple dedicated to the serpent God Sheshnag.

Every area of this country exudes a sense of potential. There are many undiscovered gems to be found in this mixing pot of political ideologies, ethnicities, and civilizations. Whether it's the stunning Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone National Parks, or its immense splendour. Sleepy and picturesque small towns coexist with an exciting big metropolis like Los Angeles, New York, and Las Vegas. Every type of environment is just waiting to be discovered, from the stunning beaches in Hawaii to the untamed wilderness of Wyoming to the icy slopes in Aspen. Given the size and diversity of North America, the optimal time to travel depends heavily on your destination. Mid-May to Mid-September is the ideal time to visit Alaska, while February through April is when the Northern Lights typically dance across Canada's Yukon Territory. Be cautious because Florida and other Southern areas experience hurricane weather from June to November. Travellers are urged to avoid the summer in the US since temperatures can soar, especially for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. March, April, and May are perfect for visiting places like Yellowstone (particularly for the bear season).
