pouet! i come back ... for more on joseph ... hehe ... it's not really said in the comic thus far but i imagine him and five are besties since forever? can you expend on that, like, how/when did they first meet, was it in any way notable? is there an important memory they share or some (child) drama that made them the besties they are now? (or. were. before five got punched of course) or maybe just some thoughts youve had about them as a team & that you just want to & can share :]
oooh yes we are enjoying the joseph questions dearly... and YES they are so bffsies. platonic soulmates in our head. we've been thinking recently, that we think the way they would have become friends was because they're both "duds" (no observable ability to do magic). so we imagine they'd both bond over that as younger primary schoolers and then start sucking on each other's dusty scalps from then on.
tbh we don't think they'd have much room to have any significant memories which makes sense because they sorta have a very idealist conflict free upbringing for the most part, hence adversity is minimal. in terms of them being duds it's less like something they're troubled by and more like something they just have in common.
but when we think about the future (asking the question.. what if five didn't die?) the squabbles are definitely more likely... we feel like they'd both be very prone to jealousy in their own ways. but as a result they'd probably just end up closer because that frustration would mostly be an opportunity to be more transparent with what they want out of each other irregardless of if they can communicate that well.
misc thoughts... joseph would definitely mature faster in the brain. but we feel like in terms of the Central Incident it would be five who would naturally grow to understand the series of events in a more objective manner while joseph would definitely be hung up in the irrational details. for a lot of reasons but two especially... 1) five is essentially forced to move on and confront a totally new environment so it's a lot harder to be hung up on brief injustice, while joseph is forced to remain in the old situation just with his primary support ripped away from him, and 2) five already has to deal with more conflict (probably more beef atp with rosey boy than the guy who killed him) and will only have to confront more conflict from more people, but joseph's only direct target of resentment is the person who killed five. so it's very centralized. which is why we think the two no longer being in contact with one another afterwards is the only way their friendship can actually be preserved, ironically... their conflict in opinion would be incredibly damaging to each other.
