“You’re dead to him, you know,” Mizora purred. “He looks at you, and all he sees is a monster puppeting around his beloved Aurel’s body.”

‘All those years spent torturing him, and you still don’t know him,’ Aurel said, turning his cold violet gaze onto her. ‘He is not nearly so limited in his view.’

“Oh, but he is, pet,” Mizora sighed. “You’re missing what I’m saying; he doesn’t see you as Aurel.  Yes, you have his memories, and you speak like him, and you might have even tricked yourself into feeling like him…but you’re just a little worm wriggling around in dead brain tissue. You’re not really him. If you weren’t spending your time fighting Zariel’s forces down here, he’d have discarded you long ago. He only keeps you around because you’re useful.”

‘And what do you hope to get out of this?’ Aurel snapped, tentacles flaring as he glared at Mizora. ‘Don’t play coy, Mizora, I know what you’re after here. You failed. Your warlock defied and outsmarted you, Karlach escaped Zariel without punishment, and now both of them are here decimating Zariel’s forces. I would bet she is furious with you right now. You’re desperate, Mizora, and that looks almost worse on you than your usual disgusting smug grin.’

The flicker of annoyance in Mizora’s eyes made Aurel a little bolder, a little more sure. He’d struck a nerve there.  It was comforting to see he hadn’t completely lost his touch, no matter what she said…

‘I’m right, aren’t I?’ he gloated. ‘You have nothing to bargain for. I won’t be giving you my soul just for—’

“Your soul?!”

Mizora laughed, high-pitched and shrill and gleeful.

“Oh, pet,” she grinned, all sharp teeth like a self-satisfied cat. “Even if I wanted that…I’m afraid you’re fresh out. You have no soul.”
