'August 2023's box office will still feel the effects of Barbie and Oppenheimer's release, but there are several new movies set for release with hopes of achieving their own financial success. August has never been one of the biggest months of the year for movie theaters, as it marks the end of the summer season. Studios traditionally use the month to let the bigger movies from the summer to continue dominating. It has also become a time of the year when studios are willing to put slightly riskier projects in theaters with the hopes of catching the attention of audiences occasionally and finding success with lacking competition.
The outlook of the August 2023 box office is another example of these strategies at play. A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, the sequel to The Meg, and a potential DC franchise starter in Blue Beetle are among the biggest new releases coming to theaters this month. Each of these movies have IP burdens to deliver major box office results to keep their respective franchises going, while several other new movies will attempt to truly stand on their own against remaining July 2023 box office hits. While not every new movie will be a hit, here are some key predictions for the August 2023 box office
9. Barbie Will Pass $1.3 Billion Worldwide & Become 2023's Highest-Grossing Movie
Before tackling the new releases, all eyes will remain on Barbie's box office to see how high it climbs. After making over $750 million during its first 10 days of release, the movie based on Mattel's iconic toy is an undeniable success. Its current trends put it in elite company with the highest-grossing movies of all time. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's movie will need time to reach those heights, but it could become 2023's highest-grossing movie during August. It needs to double its current total to pass The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $1.35 billion to claim that title, which is doable over the next four weeks.
8. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Box Office Prediction
The first major August 2023 box office release is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The animated reboot boasts a youthful and star-studded voice cast, as well as great animation, which have led to outstanding reviews. 2023 has been a stellar year for animated movies based on major IPs at the box office as demonstrated by The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. There is also a decent history of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies performing well at the box office, which could work in the new movie's favor.
Long range projections for TMNT: Mutant Mayhem's box office call for a 5-day opening weekend of nearly $50 million according to Box Office Pro, with around $27M-$36M coming during the traditional 3-day weekend. Since TMNT: Mutant Mayhem's reviews are so positive and the characters are so popular, the movie earning around $140 million domestically and $350 million worldwide overall seems doable. That would put the movie slightly behind the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie from Michael Bay but a step forward after its sequel stumbled.
7. Meg 2: The Trench Box Office Prediction
Warner Bros. is hoping to have the August 2023 box office surprise with Meg 2: The Trench. The original movie starring Jason Statham was an unexpected success in 2018 as it made $45M in its opening weekend domestically and finished with $530M worldwide. This is why Warner Bros. decided to move forward with a sequel and reportedly increased the budget to roughly $150M. Meg 2 is looking to repeat the unexpected success and keep the franchise alive and finish a trilogy.
There are currently not expectations that Meg 2 will attract audiences quite as well, even as the number of megaladons featured increases. Box Office Pro has a projection of $22M-$27M for the opening weekend. While there is a gap in the schedule for over-the-top action movies, Meg 2's box office is likely to finish with less than $100M domestically, and international audiences could help push the worldwide total over $300M if everything goes right.
6. The Last Voyage of the Demeter Box Office Prediction
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is not expected to take too big of a bite out of the domestic box office. Universal's new horror movie has a recognizable tale behind it in theory thanks to its connection to Dracula, but there is not much of a sign that audiences are aware the movie is coming out. The Last Voyage of the Demeter's box office projections is a mere $5M-$10M for its opening weekend domestically. That puts a rather dark cloud over the movie's financial hopes, making a $20M domestic total even a challenge to hit potentially.
5. Blue Beetle Box Office Prediction
Warner Bros. and DC Studios are in a curious position when it comes to Blue Beetle's box office prospects. On one hand, the movie originally announced as an HBO Max original was given a bigger budget after the fact to become bigger and support a theatrical release date. The arrival of Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes is a big step in representation, and DC Studios chief James Gunn has confirmed Blue Beetle will live on as part of the new DC Universe continuity. However, Blue Beetle is unlikely to be canon to the new universe and the DC brand is still reeling from The Flash's box office bomb.
While Blue Beetle might live on, the odds of Blue Beetle being a box office hit and launching a major franchise are quite low. According to Box Office Pro, the movie might open to less than $20M domestically. That would be a rather disastrous start for a superhero movie nowadays, especially one that reportedly carries an $120M budget. Barring incredible word of mouth and gaining significant traction with general audiences, a very optimistic prediction for Blue Beetle's box office might only be $75M domestically and $200M worldwide.
4. Strays Box Office Prediction
Universal is hoping to have an R-rated hit on its hands with the raunchy animal comedy Strays. The movie features a great collection of actors lending their voices to play dogs, including Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Will Forte, Isla Fisher, and Randall Park. Its red band trailers have leaned heavily into the mischievous and adult adventures that the pets will partake in and the comedic opportunities that will come from them.
There is an optimistic outlook for Strays at the box office. Projections have landed around $18M-$28M for the comedy's opening weekend domestically. While that is far from a huge opening, it could be enough to give the movie a good enough start that it could become profitable with a low enough budget. Since it is a voice-only role for even the biggest stars, Strays' box office surpassing $60M domestically and $150M worldwide could still be enough for it to be a hit.
3. Gran Turismo Box Office Prediction
Sony is hoping that its video game movie success continues with Gran Turismo's release in August 2023. The movie is based on the popular PlayStation video game racing series and the true story of Jann Mardenborough going from gamer to professional racer. It features recognizable faces in prominent roles thanks to David Harbour and Orlando Bloom, while director Neill Blomkamp has seemingly crafted a thrilling racing movie based on early reactions. While Gran Turismo's release plan has changed to the SAG-AFTRA strike, its box office potential still remains.
The best-case scenario for Gran Turismo's box office is that it can get to $200M worldwide and become profitable. This will require the movie to open above early projections and use what will hopefully be good word of mouth from early fan screenings leading up to August 25th to drive up interest. If good reviews follow, Gran Turismo's box office could open to around $25M domestically and help the movie reach $70M domestically. International audiences could help make up the difference and get the movie close to being a hit.
2. Barbie & Oppenheimer Will Remain The Biggest New Releases
While there are several new movies hoping to make a mark on the August 2023 box office, it seems that none of them will be able to truly overtake Barbie and Oppenheimer's box office. The two movies have remained at the center of pop culture discussions over a week after their releases. While TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Blue Beetle, and Gran Turismo have some IP connected to them, they do not appear to have the same recognizability as Barbie and Oppenheimer. That is why when the August 2023 box office concludes, the Barbenheimer duo is likely to be the two highest-grossing movies of the month.
1. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Will Be August 2023's Biggest New Movie At The Box Office
Based on the above August 2023 box office predictions, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be the biggest new release this month. The animated movie might not have the strength to overtake Barbie and outearn it this month, but it is the best chance for a new release to make more than $100M domestically. The great reviews that the family-friendly action movie has received should help encourage families to see it all month long before and after school starts. That will help propel the TMNT reboot to be the August 2023 box office champion among the biggest new releases.'

Koulibaly Al Hilal
Tumblr media
Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly has joined Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal from Premier League side Chelsea, the two clubs announced on Sunday.
"We'll continue to make history together," Al Hilal said on Twitter, alongside a short video featuring Koulibaly.
The four-time Asian Champions League winners said Koulibaly's contract would run until 2026 without giving any financial details. British media reported that the Saudi club would pay around £17 million ($21.61m) for the centre-back.
"I'm here with those who make the glory in the present and the future," the Africa Cup of Nations winner said.
Koulibaly, 32, scored two goals in 32 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea after joining them from Napoli last July.
He is the second player moving to Al Hilal from the Premier League after Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.
The Saudi Pro League has become attractive to Europe-based players since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr in January.
League champions Al Ittihad signed Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema earlier this month, while the club has also confirmed that former Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante is joining them.
Al Hilal are the most decorated club in Saudi Arabia and Asia, having won 66 trophies, and they hold the record for league and Asian Champions titles with 18 and four, respectively.
Boosting their squad is a priority for the Riyadh-based club; they have lost their league and Asian Champions crowns.

Spanish media report that they are also keen to secure the services of Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva.
Kalidou Koulibaly has become the latest Chelsea player to move to Saudi Arabia after the defender completed a transfer to Al-Hilal for an undisclosed fee.
The centre-back, 32, joins Ruben Neves at the Saudi Pro League side following the Wolves midfielder's £47m switch.
Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante has also agreed to sign for Saudi champions Al-Ittihad, while team-mate Edouard Mendy is close to joining Al-Ahli.
Koulibaly signed for Chelsea from Napoli last July on a four-year deal.
He arrived at Stamford Bridge with European and international experience, after helping Napoli win the Italian Cup in 2020 and Senegal claim the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.
But he played just 32 games for the club in all competitions, scoring two goals in 23 Premier League appearances.
"From my first game to my last, it was an honour to wear this badge," Koulibaly said on Twitter.
"Last season wasn't the one we wanted, but I want to thank the fans and everyone at the club for your support."
Chelsea did not disclose how much Al-Hilal have paid for Koulibaly - but reports suggest it could be as much as £20m.
Koulibaly's arrival in Saudi Arabia follows a recent trend from European clubs that started with Cristiano Ronaldo's switch from Manchester United to Al-Nassr in January.
Karim Benzema followed from Real Madrid to Al-Ittihad at the end of the season, while Arsenal's Thomas Partey and Manchester City's Bernardo Silva have been heavily linked with a move in recent weeks.
The trend underlines the league's ambition to be one of the top five in the world and follows a decision in June by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns Newcastle United, to take over four leading clubs in the country.
There is uncertainty over whether PIF holds a stake in Chelsea's ultimate owners, the private equity firm Clearlake Capital, although club sources have rejected suggestions of any direct involvement.
Despite this, the club could well see four of its players join the Saudi Pro League by the end of the summer, with Morocco winger Hakim Ziyech also linked with a move.
These departures are part of a wider process going on behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge as new manager Mauricio Pochettino reshapes his squad.
Germany forward Kai Havertz is due to join Arsenal in a £65m deal and Manchester City have had a £30m bid accepted for Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
The Chelsea rebuild has also seen the arrival of France forward Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, while Villarreal's Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson reportedly had a medical in London this weekend before a move.

So, highlights of the decade? Mine are KO, Smash, and Infinity War + Endgame just to name some
Deadpool and Logan reminding the world what R-rated superhero movies could be and that studios shouldn’t be afraid to do them. Also, the latter for creating a fitting end to a 17 year endeavor.
Toonami resurrecting itself from the brink of the abyss.
Alita: Battle Angel surviving purgatory long enough to actually get made into a really special kind of film that should by all means get to continue. Disney and Avatar be damned.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse changing the animation game.
The Greatest Showman being the greatest musical film I've personally ever seen.
John Wick. Shit, Keanu Reeves in general really.
Over The Garden Wall, We Bare Bears and OK KO just for being themselves.
Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated for rewriting the entire formula of a Scooby-Doo series and becoming my favorite incarnation of the series.
Justice League Action for actually trying despite Cartoon Network not appreciating it in the slightest.
Teen Titans GO To The Movies for actually being really good which is a sure fire contender for “Shocker Of The Decade”.
Milf Art Online for existing.
Digimon coming back to finish a story I thought already ended.
Hey Arnold! and Samurai Jack finally getting their proper finales.
The brave men and women that died to save the Sonic The Hedgehog movie. They shall never be forgotten.
On Cinema At The Cinema for taking kayfabe to a whole other level and actually managing to get a movie out of it
Doctor Who. Specifically the 11th Doctor's era for actually getting me into the series.
Getting my first cat in 7 years after going through a whole "I'll never love again!" arc.
J Lo’s sexy ass literally causing a riot in Morocco because they couldn’t handle it.
The rise of “Troy from Community”; Donald Glover/Childish Gambino.
Finding me because I did a really good job of hiding myself until I was 20.
Unravel and Unravel Two for speaking to a deep part of my soul and giving me a gaming experience I never thought I’d have with a genre I was never into to begin with. I don’t fuck with puzzle games but I fucks with Unravel and Unravel Two.
Batman Beyond getting the respect it deserves and coming back with a mov-Oh, wait; never mind. That hasn’t happened yet because people are still sleeping in those DC Animation studios.
Annnnd I shall stop myself right there before I end up going on forever.

Top 10 Movies of this Decade –– A Biased Reflection By Conner Miller
As this hellish decade draws to a close it only felt right to list the ten films that made it a little better. Do not expect to find all critical darlings on this. This is a place for my personal top 10 –– not Joker. Lettuce Pray:
10. Short Term 12 (2013) dir. Destin Daniel Cretton
Chances are you’ve seen Captain Marvel, Atlanta, Booksmart (more to follow), Brooklyn 99 or Bohemian Rhapsody. There’s almost no chance you’ve seen this intimate 2013 SXSW selection. Before Brie Larson was terrifying alt-right women haters and winning Academy Awards she portrayed Grace, a supervisor at a group home for troubled teens. Typically in indies like this one mid tier star is all the budget can afford. Director Destin Daniel Cretton took chances on barely known actors who used this film as a launching pad to stardom. Between Brie and Rami Malek alone there’s Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Actor. Add in LaKeith Stanfield of Atlanta and Someone Great fame, Kaitlyn Dever of Booksmart and Unbelievable and Stephanie Beatriz from Brooklyn 99 and you’ve got enough to make a Knives Out sequel.
Tumblr media
The shocking thing is with the immense talent featured the film’s budget was under a million dollars. Larson’s performance as Grace is layered, empathetic and revelatory. She is one of the few actresses that lets you in without words. You can see the grief and longing to help her kids she mentors in her eyes. The relationship between her and troubled teen Jayden (the magnificent as always Kaitlyn Dever) forms the film’s emotional core. Grace and Jayden lean into each other and find their tribulations aren’t dissimilar. Cretton shows a deft touch in letting the actor’s play to their strengths and allowing the camera to be still and messy allowing the group home to become a character. The film crackles with humanity and everyone involved shines bright.
There’s not an excuse to miss this one. Hop on Amazon Prime and catch it!
9. The Social Network (2010) Dir. by David Fincher
Before their ill-fated runs as Lex Luthor and Spider-Man, Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield headlined this snappy masterpiece about your grandmother’s favorite app to share slightly racist boomer memes. While Facebook has aged like milk, the film has only grown more relevant. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s whiplash paced dialogue is the highlight here. There’s not a day that goes by I don’t try to work my “fuck you flip-flops” into casual conversation.
For a film about such a now mainstream app, there’s more weird shit to shake a stick at. Brenda Song (withholding calling her London Tipton) as a crazy ex who likes to burn trash! Justin Timberlake with a strange haircut as Napster founder Sean Parker! Not one, but two Armie Hammers! Early career Dakota Johnson! All of these welcome turns are grounded by Sorkin’s bubbling script. Even in limited screen-time each character’s dialogue is so unique they feel lived in and real.
Tumblr media
For all of David Fincher’s acclaimed films, I find this one the most accessible. This isn’t Fight Club or Se7en. His most human film by far TSN takes everything great about Fincher and condenses it into one highly enjoyable package. Sometimes his films become meandering and Sorkin’s dialogue helps dial this in. The result is a film that feels dangerously ominous considering its 2010 release date. In some ways it feels the film that defines and bridges the distinctly different presidential administrations this decade brought.
8. A Star is Born (2018) Dir. by Bradley Cooper
On paper this film looked like a dead on arrival disaster. Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut? A fourth remake of a classic movie? David Chapelle in a dramatic role? This movie rose above the memes and truly kicked me in the teeth. There’s so much to love so hey let’s get another look at it!
Blistering hot take, but the cinematography in this film by Matthew Libatique might be the best of the fucking decade. When he shoots scenes with Cooper’s Jackson Maine the camera is frenetic and unsteady. As he begins to let Lady Gaga’s Ally into his life the camera grows steadier and symbolic of their bond. Nearly every wide shot in this film looks like a painting. The concert scenes are slathered in lights that make the viewer feel like they’re on stage with Jackson and Ally.  Exhibit A:
Tumblr media
Elite framing aside the songs in this film are eternal and will always loom on my Spotify waiting to strike. “Shallow” is the ultimate karaoke song and I will always attempt to howl Lady Gaga’s eternal AHHH AHHHHH AHHHH until I am lowered into the ground.
Parks and Recreation fans will be pleased to see Hippie Ron aka Sam Elliott in an utterly dominant supporting role as Jackson’s older brother. I still write angry letters to the Academy asking why he didn’t win Best Supporting Actor. I am very PASSIONATE about this film and it is on HBO. Grab a six pack and prepare to sob.
7. “The Spectacular Now” (2013) Dir. by James Ponsoldt
This originally was going to be Whiplash, but Tyler needed to take the floor on that as a young student living in Manhattan. We do stick with Miles Teller for number seven with one of god tier studio A24′s first hits: The Spectacular Now. Admittedly any film that features Brie Larson and Kaityln Dever already has me interested, but bias aside this truly is a beautiful ride.
Tumblr media
Late film critic Roger Ebert famously gave this film a perfect 4/4 in one of his final reviews. I’ll do Roger one more and give it a 5/4. Between the grainy film stock, the small scale stakes and the authentic characters this film just feels achievable. There’s no beam in the sky or city to save, but the stakes feel just as dire. As the main character Sutter navigates alcoholism, love and trying to understand his parents you feel for him. He’s a proxy for which everyone in high school else felt. There’s a gentle innocence in how sweet the movie is. If it is ever taken off Netflix I will be ready to storm their server room.
6. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018)
You thought you were going to escape without a Marvel film and you were almost right. The various reboots and remakes of Spider-Man this decade all featured high and low points. This animated tale, however, was transcendent. Moving the character into animation and featuring a Spider-Man of color in the lead injected much needed life into the character. I never thought i’d see the day that Spider-Man won an Academy Award, but lo and behold deviating from a cis caucasian Spider-Man brought it home.
Tumblr media
Between the film’s electric soundtrack, unique frame rate and snappy animation it truly is the closest thing to living in a comic book. Miles’ first swing sequence is by far one of the greatest scenes in cinema – animated or non-animated. The voice acting is superb and without a doubt this film will be heavily played when I have kids over Frozen. Another one right there on Netflix waiting for you to check out!
5. “Waves” (2019) Dir. by Trey Edward Shults
One of three 2019 selections on this list (it has been a hell of a year for cinema) Waves is by far the hardest film to find on this list. Despite an extremely limited release last month I was able to catch it in cinemas. I haven’t experienced a film that better captures the dynamic of a family. The vibrant colors of South Florida evoke shades of Moonlight as the viewer is introduced to son Tyler masterfully played by newcomer Kelvin Harrison Jr. We see him navigate his senior year of high school amidst the pressures of a girlfriend, competitive athletics and the constant weight of his overbearing, but layered father (a brilliant Sterling K. Brown of This is Us fame).
Tumblr media
To say much about the plot is to spoil the film, but it is powerful to say the least. The film’s soundtrack is simply a miracle. The brilliant hues of neon and ocean pastels burn images in you mind as Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi, Tyler, The Creator and numerous other beloved artists weave in and out. This film literally has more than five Frank Ocean songs in it. If that isn’t convincing enough you’re on the wrong blog.
4. “Uncut Gems” (2019) Dir. by Josh and Benny Sadfie
Infinitely rewatch-able, this film is the closest simulation to living inside a pressure cooker. Adam Sandler plays the neurotic Howard Ratner with the conviction of man of his hair on fire. Even in the scenes he isn’t present his gravitas is felt in every frame. There’s really something here for everyone. Howard owes people money from his diamond store in Manhattan. As he ramps up his debt with a series of increasingly risky bets the viewer follows him night and day. Each time he seemingly as a way out the stakes only increase.
Tumblr media
The frantic and gritty way the film is shot paired with its masterfully tense score have the film dialed up to 120 the entire runtime. It is the film equivalent of “Why are you so sweaty? I was watching Cops.” in Stepbrothers. This one just went wide release on Christmas so get out there before it leaves theaters.
3. “La La Land” (2016) Dir. by Damien Chazelle
Don’t let the infamous Best Picture swap with Moonlight fool you about the quality of this film. In his follow up to Whiplash, Chazelle takes command from the opening musical number on the overpasses of the 405 in LA. This love story of ambition between aspiring musician Seb and actress Mia has heart that few films have. It isn’t about boy meets girl. Similar to A Star is Born it is about finding the person you need to reach your dreams.
Tumblr media
There’s few films with this level of direction. Each camera movement, lighting choice and story beat is tactile and purposeful. Emma Stone delivers a career defining performance and the Academy thankfully awarded her Best Actress. Every song on the soundtrack is an absolute banger and there’s really no excuse for not watching this one. A true gem even on my twelfth rewatch and four papers/presentations I gave on it in film school.
2. “Booksmart” (2019) Dir. by Olivia Wilde
These final two movies on the list exist on their own personal Mount Olympus. Olivia Wilde, in her directorial debut no less, creates an honest coming of age movie that’s actually a love story. Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaityln Dever) are honor roll students on their final day of high school. When they realize the kids who partied and didn’t study religiously also got into Ivy League schools they set out to correct that over one crazy night.
Tumblr media
You really won’t find a sweeter or more hopeful film. Dever and Feldstein bring electricity to their roles and won’t fail to make you laugh and cry. In a news cycle filled with hate and fear, films like this are needed. A film that’s sexually, politically and morally progressive without getting on a soapbox is nearly impossible and that’s exactly what Wilde achieved with this instant classic. I literally only have a Hulu subscription to rewatch this endlessly. I also own two different shirts of Amy and Molly. Enjoy.
1. “Lady Bird” (2017) Dir. by Greta Gerwig
If you’re still reading this far you likely know me and know what’s number one. Gerwig’s Lady Bird is nothing short of perfection. A riveting and relatable story of titular Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson’s journey navigating her senior year of high school in Sacramento at surface, but really about parents and children.  Between Sam Levy’s grainy cinematography that makes the film feel like a memory, Jon Brion’s understated score and Saoirse Ronan’s dynamo performance as Lady Bird there’s so much to love. You’re this far. You don’t need to read anymore. Take a breath, pat yourself on the back and let’s hope the next decade is even better. Also Lady Bird is on Amazon Prime. Don’t forget that.

(P.S Larry McPherson is the best movie dad of all time –– fight me.)
