September NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry [Update]

It's a good thing for everyone! According to the NPD Group, the videogame industry's performance in physical retail was up 27 percent over the course of September. $1.07 Billion, compared to $848 million in the previous year.

Predictably, the most of the increased revenue came from the software segment, which is also known as "where all the Grand Theft Auto 5 money is stored." The new physical sales for console and portable games in September totaled $754.3 million, which is a 52 percent increase over $497.5 million earned during the same time frame the previous year. GTA 5 understandably tops the list of September's top 10 most-sold games, followed by Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2k14.

The hardware sales of the period resulted in $183.2million, 13 percent less than September 2012's figures. The Nintendo 3DS had its fifth month as the top-selling thing in the segment, while Wii U sales increased "more than 200 percent" over August, but Nintendo abstained from providing specific figures on how many Wii U boxes that works out to.

Meanwhile, the PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360's record-breaking streak and was the best-selling console for the period, largely thanks to the available Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle as per NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan.

The Accessories segment, which contains giftcards, digital currency vouchers, Disney Infinity/Skylanders figures and other various items, was mostly unchanged year-over-year, with only an increase of 2 percent in sales to $142.3 million.

Update: Microsoft has chimed in saying that it made 80 million sales to retailers of Xbox 360 worldwide in September, with console sales hitting $401.2 million. Nintendo 3DS Remains No. 1. Minecraft Wii U Responds to Price Reduce

Nintendo begins the crucial holiday selling season with an impressive performance and a strong performance, as Nintendo 3DS finished as the top-selling video game system in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive month. Wii U enjoyed new momentum following the price cut.

On Oct. 15, Nintendo announced that Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, which launched globally on Oct. 12, teamed up to sell more than 4 million units worldwide in the initial two days on the market. A full breakdown of U.S. sales for the games as well as the brand new Nintendo 2DS handheld, which launched on the same day, will be included in next month's NPD report. Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️

It’s been pouring overnight and into this morning. We have a flood watch in effect until 10AM. I bet it extends.

I finally got the opportunity to do a little async/await Swift this week. Using a combination of generics, Decodable, and async/await makes for an extremely powerful network client. It’s pretty shocking how simple it was to combine those three items to form a set of methods that return fully decoded models with so few lines of code and zero blocks/closures/whatever you call them in your favorite language.

I’m sure some folks will laugh and say “We’ve had that for X years in language Y!” I get it. It’s fairly new to Swift and I’m finally getting to work with it properly.

I’ve also been dabbling with SwiftUI and find some of the concepts weird, but as with all moves to new frameworks or languages, I’ll pick it up and it’ll feel natural at some point.

Of course you can still make a crummy app with native tools and a brilliant app with tools like React Native.

When I was a Windows developer I could always tell when an application was written in Classic Visual Basic because of how the windows drew. It was a dead giveaway. That always bothered me. Nothing against Classic Visual Basic, it was a native development tool, and you could be extremely productive with it. Just like modern web tooling being used everywhere.

This is really weird to see from American car companies. Why abandon the sedan? Well it’s because American’s are ridiculous. We want the biggest darned cars we could possibly fit on the road.

For me personally I’d really love to have a $10k or less, limited range, EV. It could be small, that’s fine. It would be for running errands and commuting into town, not that I have a commute any longer but if I did I’d like a super economical EV.

The recent news that the NFL is in negotiations with Netflix (!!!) for the two Christmas Day games this year really made my blood boil. I mean, I shouldn’t be surprised. The league has been slowly chipping away at fans’ goodwill for years. But the fact that Netflix (!!!) is involved makes it extra offensive.

Professional sporting is just as greedy as any other business. They’re there to make money, not just break even, they want to make crap tons of money. This is how they do it. They make deals with the highest bidder. If that means selling the rights to some special games at jacked up rates, it’s what they’re gonna do.

It is often said that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. The relationship between Jobs and Bill Gates, the legendary co-founder of Microsoft, was a constantly fascinating one. Both beginning their careers in the mid-1970s, they were fierce commercial rivals and had contrasting personalities. Jobs in particular was prone to making fierce attacks, both on Microsoft as a company and Gates personally. Yet a friendship, albeit a frequently grudging one, burgeoned over time, rooted in a respect for what the other did.

In truth, the two men approached their work from vastly different positions. While Jobs viewed computers as a means to emancipate individuality, Gates saw them as a tool for doing business and as a driver of commerce. Yet both realized that they could be stronger with the other’s co-operation. In 1982, for instance, Jobs persuaded Microsoft – who had produced the operating system for IBM’s PC – to create a spreadsheet, database and graphics program for the Mac.

However, by the following year the two were at serious odds. As Gates heralded the imminent arrival of Windows, Jobs accused him of ripping off the Mac’s graphical interface. Gates is said to have responded by observing: ‘I think it’s more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.’

Their relationship did not become any easier as Microsoft surged ahead in terms of commercial success. It must also have been particularly galling for Jobs that Apple seemed to need Microsoft and its pivotal software, such as Word and Excel, more than Microsoft needed Apple. The two companies spent years making lawyers rich as they wrangled over patent disputes.

Jobs resorted to some fairly crude personal attacks against Gates, once declaring that he would have been a ‘broader’ guy ‘if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger’, and on another occasion telling a reporter: ‘They [Microsoft] just have no taste. I don’t mean that in a small way. I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don’t think of original ideas and they don’t bring much culture into their products.’

But Gates would have an important role in turning Apple around after Jobs returned to his spiritual home in 1997. With much of the industry of the opinion that the company had had its day, Microsoft bought some $150 million of Apple stock and agreed to keep producing for Macs. Jobs publicly showed his appreciation, saying: ‘I think the world’s a better place for it.’ Yet when a giant image of Gates was beamed into that year’s Macworld Convention, Apple’s avid fans began an impromptu round of booing. A case of biting the hand that feeds – and indicative of the animosity that Jobs especially had stoked between them over the years.

But as time went on, both of them became able to take a broader view of their achievements (which in Gates’ case includes becoming one of the world’s foremost philanthropists – something that may yet prove a more important achievement than any of his work as a software designer). Theirs was, in the final reckoning, a battle with no losers. Each is considered integral to the technological revolution that has swept the world since the 1970s. Each made epic amounts of money. Each made a significant dent in the universe.

In 2007 the two sat on the same stage at the Wall Street Journal’s ‘D: All Things Digital’ conference and were notably gracious about one another. Gates said of Jobs: ‘The way he goes about things is just different, and I think it’s magical.’ And when Jobs was nearing the end of his life, Gates visited him at his home, where they chatted for several hours about their ideas and reminisced about their careers with all their ups and downs.

After Jobs died, Gates said: ‘Steve and I first met nearly thirty years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.’

Their rivalry no doubt drove Jobs and Gates on to new heights – and it was the wider world that felt the benefit.
