Rereading book 2 and I think the thing that makes the prose in The Sisters Grimm so compelling while also being objectively bad is that MB is very clearly just having fun. Like, these were the guy's first books and you can tell. He's not there to research or dig into the complexities of ancient folk tales, he's just there for a good time. They read like a kid narrating his game of pretend in real time at the top of his lungs. It's endearing.
Unfortunately the things he's having fun with include fatphobia and transphobia and misogyny and ableism and --
