there has to be some kind of middle ground between "academia is built on oppression and gatekeeping and privileges elite white knowledge and therefore cannot be trusted" and "academia is the only true source of knowledge." there has to. there has to be something between "any random person can be trusted as an expert" and "no one can be trusted without a doctoral degree."

#i get that there are legitimate problems with academia but sometimes i think we should trust and value the knowledge of people who have #dedicated years or decades to learning as much as possible about a field #i think this is part of my problem with the trainer i've been complaining about #they are a relative of a person affected by suicidality and have a platform based on that lived experience #and i don't want to invalidate that because I think sometimes lived experience can be more relevant and helpful than academic knowledge #but it depends! #talking about evidence based practices and 'practices that have evidence' as if they are equally valid makes me uncomfortable #and i thought i was just being elitist but now i'm not sure #sure if someone wants to use crystals to treat their suicidality let's try it but please don't act like that's equally valid to therapy #i think that's my overall issue with them. that everything is presented as equally valid. #making suicide memes could help someone cope but that doesn't mean it's a valid suicide prevention strategy. #crystals may placebo-effect someone into feeling better and that's awesome but they should also get professional help.
