Doing a cheeky repost cause I'm tired but I need to talk about how, Pewter bitch that I am, as much as I ride the "get Pewter out of jail, the way he's treated is such bullshit" train, I do think it does a massive disservice to the weight of his character to pretend as though he literally "did nothing wrong" overall, relatively speaking. The power of his love for Renju comes from the realisation of just how far he was willing to go for barely a chance of protecting him (despite the fact Renju is logically a prime suspect in the ongoing murder case). If we try to say that what Pewter did in right path wasn't even that bad, then the whole twist, the gutpunch of jupewter in aitsf, just is stripped of its impact. It also removes the weight of the confrontation with Pewter in the epilogue (one of the best written scenes I believe). The point is that Pewter is suffering and no one cares. We're supposed to be a bit uncomfortable with how his story ends, because it isn't fair, comparatively. It's because of that suffering, that isolation, the way everyone used him, so willing to throw him under the bus, that Pewter was driven to do stupid, morally wrong things in Reso and Iris route. Is Date being incredibly selfish in his admonishing of Pewter here? Of course. Date's selfishness when it comes to the select people he cares about is a constant point of contention. But Pewter has also been selfish. The tragedy of him is yes, he did do some unarguably bad shit, Pewter himself is very clear about admitting that. But also, what options was he left with? This is how he got to this low, low point. He’s been gradually rammed into this, not impossible, but certainly horrible situation, and he’s come to a crossroads. We’ve ended up in this almost absurd situation where two guys acting out of a benevolent love and desire to protect someone else somehow puts them on two opposing sides of a murder case. He had to make a choice and by his own admission he makes the bad choice. He does the clearly wrong, bad, selfish thing, that’s him asserting his own autonomy in what twisted kind of way he can. It’s so interesting. The way aini tried to "fix" this when it doesn't need fixing (Boss being like "I couldn't just let them lock up my precious colleague" is bollocks, like girl, you literally *did* let them do that, you chose Date over Pewter every time, that's the point), when it should've instead let that super compelling moral and practical conflict created by their broken friendship be is....certainly a choice, one that probably came for the sake of ease, but also takes the whole "Pewter did nothing wrong" line too literally to my eye

There's something kinda dodgy, kinda funky, you know something pretty :/ about how aitsf fans are treated when they mention finding Pewter attractive, making nsfw about him, or wanting to imagine him in a sexual context. Like anyone who just directly says "yeah he's hot," "I wish there were more nsfw content of this guy" in any public forum is immediately told how weird they are. "Oooh I can't imagine wanting to fuck *him*", "It's so *weird* to me that someone would find someone like him attractive", "I didn't think anyone was into Pewter". Like okay he's not to your taste... And? Why do you feel the need to challenge people for something so....benign? Just shut up and don't interrupt people having a normal conversation about something you're not interested in. Just leave them alone. Why do they need to know how bizarre and offputting you think they are? You'd think wanting to [redacted] Pewter was more taboo than wanting to [redacted] Saito. I don't even have much of a stake in this because I'm aroace and therefore my opinions are frigid and irrelevant anyway. But if I were attracted to him as a character it'd really start to irk me, being talked about like a UFO, or some sort of very esoteric kink constantly.
Like why is it fine and understandable to want pretty serial killers and morally dubious MILFs (which it is ofc like whatever), and yet so broadly accepted that it's sooo Weird to be sexually attracted to this dude specifically? The very flamboyant, explicitly gay, less anime pretty guy (though still obviously designed to look attractive, just not with the delicate youthful features) more looks-his-own-age, autistic-coded man?
I don't want to be a killjoy with no sense of humour, but just with the sheer ubiquitousness of this take, it feels like there's something that really needs to be examined and criticised a bit harder tbh.

‘He would be unrecognisable amongst the thick darkness, if not for the pallor of skin and fair hair floating away from him like seaweed. Renju is suspended under the water, hidden close to the wall, arms slightly raised from his sides, but unnaturally still, like…’
Finally kicked my ass into gear and finished the Fragment #2-2 painting, Renju’s Somnium (anything to put off writing the next bit...)

And in a few days, I would be there, love. Whatever here that’s left of me is yours, just as it was
From Dean Cornwell (1892-1960), “The Other Side”
Tears down your door with my bare hands, screams “But it was Renju asking. Someone I love” then immediately runs away.

What exactly did Renju!Saito say to Pewter during that phone call anyways? What could he possibly have said that tipped Pewter over the edge, made him believe so strongly that - no matter his moral or ethical reservations - he just couldn’t say no? Did he say “I love you”? Was it the first time Pewter heard the words in Renju’s voice? That 1% of Renju’s consciousness, of his memories, was enough for Saito to put on a convincing enough performance (maybe not all there, but enough). He knew that Renju loved Futa Amanoma. He knew that he trusted that man more than anyone, that he would be the one person Renju could turn to as he was on the run, as he lay dying. Clearly, he knew that Renju loved him. That fact was locked and loaded in the tiniest little fragment of Renju’s memory. But would he know if Pewter had never heard it before, if that feeling, that rudimentary phrase, had never actually passed Renju’s lips? Probably not.
Because something happened there. Something powerful enough to turn Pewter, to convince him to betray everything he believed in his right mind to be good and proper and just. Something that caused him to abandon it all, to simply not care any more, leaving him in a feeble, numb state in which all he can say in his own defence is “I just love him that much.”
Messes me up, my dudes.
